The purpose of the current article is to encourage discussion among stakeholders about the viability and benefits of predoctoral prescriptive authority (RxP) training. The existing APA model curriculum for RxP training requires that such training is postdoctoral. However, predoctoral models are potentially viable and offer several distinct advantages: reducing the time and financial costs of training, attracting more applicants with a biopsychosocial orientation, and, as more individuals complete this training, enlarging the constituency for state prescriptive authority initiatives. Several possible predoctoral model curricula including the incorporation of a postdoctoral master's degree in clinical psychopharmacology are described within existing APA PhD program requirements, with suggested accommodations for PsyD programs. This article presents information on the study related to personality disorders. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a diagnostic entity still in a stage of formulation. While there appears to be some feeling that the BPD is a nosological entity, the ability, until relatively recently, to identify diagnostic criteria reliably has been fraught with inconsistencies. Researchers in their review found multiple problems in methodology and difficulties with the acquisition of samples. Researchers found multiple sets of descriptive criteria for the diagnosis. Their concern was that despite expanding literature in the borderline area, little consensus was found on diagnostic criteria.

We developed a polymerase chain reaction DNA amplification system using two distinct consensus oligonucleotide primer sets for the improved detection and typing of a broad spectrum of human genital papillomavirus (HPV) sequences, including those of novel viruses. The system incorporates one primer set designed to amplify a highly conserved L1 domain and a second primer set designed to amplify a domain within the E6 gene. We used this system to analyze 48 fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections (41 specimens from 33 cervical carcinomas, four normal cervical tissues, and several control tissues) for the presence of HPV DNA. HPV sequences were detected in all carcinoma samples and none of the control samples. Hybridization analyses showed that the results obtained with the two amplification schemes concurred completely. This approach allowed rapid confirmation of typing results and may improve the likelihood of detecting a wide variety of HPV sequences, including those of novel HPVs. Rumination is repeated regurgitation without nausea or associated gastrointestinal illness with concomitant weight loss and malnutrition. This paper describes a ruminating infant who was becoming severely malnourished. Hyperalimentation was used to provide necessary nutrition, and a paradigm of aversive behavior modification was instituted. This form of therapy was successful after less than four weeks, with no harmful side effects and no recurrence of the disorder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a prospective double-blind study, 27 patients with alcoholic hepatitis were randomized for 6-methylprednisolone (12 patients) or placebo treatment (15 patients). The mortality was 50% among steroid treated patients and 47% in the control group (P > .05). The role of liver biopsy feasibility at selection is emphasized since the mortality in this group was 10% as opposed to 71% when the procedure was contraindicated (P < .01). Complications in the steroid-treated subjects were similar quantitatively and qualitatively to those observed in the control series. Examination of published reports of mortality in earlier controlled trials suggests a modest trend in favor of corticosteroid therapy for an encephalopathic subgroup of patients but additional data are required for verification. In order to assess the effectiveness of group leaders in a correction setting, a sample of counseling groups lead by psychologists, social workers, and correctional counselors was drawn. The results indicated that groups lead by psychologists had better adjustment in their work settings than those groups lead by other leaders. Similarly, motivation was higher in the psychologist-lead groups. The significant differences between group leaders was attributed to the differential role the group leader has within the correctional setting, particularly the relative input the group leader has in the inmate's final recommendation for parole. Thus, the inmate's perception of the group leader as a threat to his freedom negates the effectiveness of the group counseling process. Total urinary hydroxyproline was found to be elevated in patients with the diagnoses of acute alcoholic hepatitis and acute viral hepatitis. Normal levels were observed in other hepatic disorders and in acute alcoholism. In alcoholic hepatitis the hydroxyproline excretion could be correlated with total serum bilirubin concentration; no reduction of excretion was observed after prolonged hospitalization although other parameters of parenchymal damage were improved. Although raised hydroxyproline levels were found in acute hepatic injury, a quantitative relationship to histologic signs of fibrogenesis could not be confirmed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
