Through the adoption of a dramaturgical perspective, this chapter positions coaching as being somewhat akin to a theatrical social performance. From this standpoint, coaching work entails much more than the routine application of pre-packaged knowledge and methods. It also requires coaches to carefully consider (and reflect upon) their interactions with others, inclusive of how they manage and display various emotions within the coaching environment ((Cassidy, T., Jones, R., & Potrac, P., Understanding sports coaching: The social, cultural and pedagogical foundations of coaching practice. Routledge, London, 2016); (Nelson, L., Potrac, P., Gilbourne, D., Allanson, A., Gale, L., & Marshall, P., Sociology of Sport Journal 19:19-40, 2014)). In terms of its structure, the chapter begins by introducing the notion of dramaturgy. This background material is followed by an overview of the classic dramaturgical writings of Erving Goffman and Arlie Russell Hochschild. Here, we highlight some essential features of their respective theorising that can stimulate critical reflection upon the dramaturgical aspects of coaching ((Cassidy, T., Jones, R., & Potrac, P., Understanding sports coaching: The social, cultural and pedagogical foundations of coaching practice. Routledge, London, 2016)). After the theoretical backdrop is presented, the focus then shifts to reviewing the (limited) available literature addressing how coaches engage in various acts of impression and emotion management to achieve their goals. In concluding the chapter, the main arguments are summarised and a number of ‘key points’ that coaches (and coach educators) may wish to critically reflect upon are presented.

Abstract : The aim of this study was the analysis of the conceptions and principles of leadership practice of high performance football coaches in Brazilian football. In this sense it was necessary to identify coaches? conceptions of leadership, to ascertain the principles of leadership practice and to determine the criteria of effectiveness in the practice of leadership. The study was focused in the work of five Brazilian male 1st Division soccer coaches who have won state and international titles and accumulate national and international professional experience. The semi- structured interviews had a minimum duration of 28 minutes and a maximum of 124 minutes each. The total was 313 minutes. The full transcript of the interviews was altogether118 pages and its content was validated by the interviewees. The procedures of thematic analysis (BRAUN & CLARK, 2006) and interpretive validity (SHENTON, 2004) were used in the analysis and interpretation of the data. The main skills includes competencies (leadership, communication, emotional balance, adaptive capacity and reflexive capacity), principles/values (honesty, coherence, discipline, humility and loyalty) and professional knowledge usually considered important by coaches in the definition of leadership philosophy. Principles of leadership practice include the leadership strategies adopted (team management, co-responsibility and assertive communication), the practice of values through oral, behavioral and environmental communication, as well as the practice of specific and general knowledge. The main parameter of the improvement of the work was sport?s result. The conclusion was that the coaches manifested the mastery of procedural knowledge about their leadership philosophy in characteristics of a tripartite model of leadership - philosophy, practice and disconnected criteria and non-linear logic. Not only it affects leadership but also defines coaches' decision-making, usually performed instinctively and based on tacit knowledge, thus reproducing actions unconsciously. The study concluded that the adoption of thisthree-phase leadership model is recommended. By this the coaches can systematize their leadership philosophies and practices, before establishing possible leadership criteria. In addition, professional learning must be centered on deliberate thinking, contemplating process and outcome. It also has to be based on the complexity of the relationship between the context, the leader and the team members. Thus, leadership will be more dynamic and adjusted to the conceptual and practical cycle, allowing the coach a reflexive, conscious and evolutionary action, enhancing its efficiency and effectiveness. The continuity of studies is necessary to to follow for a prolonged period in loco practices, in order to compare what they say they do with what they actually do, as well as to identify the impacts of different models of leadership on soccer teams.

This study aims to understand and identify the perceptions and opinions of football coaches, when merging sports and academic training for their players. These, ongoing concurrently, present difficulties that we consider significant to investigate. We pursued to understand how does the relation between clubs, in teaching young athletes, and the schools they attend. This study accompanied eight football coaches, all male, training Junior A and Junior B teams, competing for national championships. The methodology implemented for this research was qualitative. Through semi-structured interviews, data was collected, being later examined through content analysis, using the NVivo program. From these interviews, three domains aroused. The first domain is associated with unification between sports and academic training, the second to the funding and the third to the training conditions for young athletes. The results showed that in clubs, that have protocols with schools, coaches say they have a wider and better range of conditions, concerning schedules and timetables therefore ensuring better results. We were also able to observe, the coaches’ concern about their players’ studies, trying to conciliate as good as possible, guaranteeing good school achievements, ensuring a successful future, although the difficulty of reconciling the studies with the sport is evident, due to school schedules, being the protocols a benefit to the students/athletes. The institutions tangled in the lives of players, club, school and even family, were thought to be indeed an advantage to the players’ sporting and academic careers.
