Abstract

Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering measurements of water confined in mesoporous silica have been carried out. The experiment has been performed at room temperature on dry and on hydrated samples in order to investigate the interaction between the protons and the silanol groups of the confining surface. With this aim we could control the hydration of the pores in such a way as to adsorb 3.0 water molecules per nm2, corresponding to a 1 to 1 ratio with the silanol groups of the surface. DINS measurements directly measure the mean kinetic energy and the momentum distribution of the protons. A detailed analysis of the hydrated sample has been performed in order to separate the contributions of the protons in the system, allowing us to determine the arrangement of water molecules on the silanol groups. We find that the hydrogen bond of the water proton with the oxygen of the silanol group is much stronger than the hydrogen bonds of bulk water. © the Owner Societies. 2011.

Abstract

29th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 3126-3132, Comprehensive knowledge about the influence of the additive composition on the degradation behavior of the most important photovoltaic (PV) module encapsulant, ethylene vinyl actetate (EVA), is crucial for enhancing its durability. To analyze this influence, EVA foils with different additive compositions were exposed to UV irradiation (135 W/m2) at 60 °C with a UV-A lamp, and characterized by spectroscopic methods (UV-vis, Raman spectroscopy) and DSC measurements. The reference foil with minimal additives showed significant changes in consistency during UV exposure. Those changes were explained by chain scissions, changes in conformation and crystallinity. In particular, degradation induced changes in the intensity of the symmetric compared to the asymmetric CH2 stretching vibrations, detected by Raman spectroscopy, indicate modifications in the conformational and crystalline setup. Therefore, their intensity ratio offers a nondestructive method to follow EVA degradation in PV modules. A major influence of additives on the development of fluorescent and chromophoric species was found. A quenching effect of oxygen on the development of fluorescent species was observed.

Abstract

We have investigated the morphologies of Langmuir layers of charged, polymeric hard-core/interlayer/soft-shell nanoparticles spread at the air-water interface. Depending on various mutual interactions, which are correlated to the areal densities of the deposited nanoparticles, we observed ordered patterns of nondense and closed-packed arrangements of core/interlayer/shell (CIS) nanoparticle ordering. At low areal densities, we found an almost regular distribution of the charged CIS nanoparticles on the water surface, which resulted from long-range repulsive electrostatic interactions between them. At higher areal densities, domains of more closely packed and ordered nanoparticles were formed, coexisting with regions of randomly and sparsely distributed nanoparticles. We relate these domains to the interplay of electrostatic repulsion and capillary attraction caused by the dipolar character of like-charged particles at the interface, allowing for a characteristic separation distance between nanoparticles of about 3-4 times the nanoparticle diameter. At relatively high areal densities, attractive van der Waals forces were finally capable of making nanoparticles to come in contact with each other, leading to densely packed patches of hexagonally ordered nanoparticles coexisting with regions of rather well-ordered nanoparticles separated by about 1 μm and regions of randomly and sparsely distributed nanoparticles. Intriguingly, upon re-expansion of the area available per nanoparticle, these densely packed patches disappeared, indicating that steric repulsion due to the presence of soft shells as well as long-range electrostatic repulsive forces were strong enough to assure reversibility of the morphological behavior. Abstract

International audience; Autophobic dewetting of a thin polystyrene (PS) layer on a cross-linked PS film has been studied with optical microscopy and neutron reflection. For two different cross-linking densities, the increase in contact angle and the fast decrease of both dewetting velocity and slippage length as a function of dewetting time indicate that the dewetting dynamics is controlled by the penetration of free linear polymer chains into the cross-linked film and the concomitant stretching of the network mesh: the loss of entropy of the network favors dewetting, while partial chain interdiffusion between the layers increases friction and eventually stabilizes the top film. In a second series of experiment, we modified the entropy of the network by swelling it with linear chains from a reservoir of identical polymers prior to depositing the top PS film. Once equilibrated, a stable interface without considerable interdiffusion between network and top film was achieved. Without such interdiffusion, a constant contact angle and a constant slippage length were observed.

Alter ist der größte Risikofaktor für Pflegebedürftigkeit. Daher führte der Anstieg der Lebenserwartung in den meisten europäischen Staaten im Laufe der vergangenen Jahrzehnte zu einem Anstieg der Zahl derPflegebedürftigen. Zukünftig wird sich dieser noch verstärken, da die geburtenstarken Jahrgänge der 50er und 60er Jahre in die hohen Altersklassen kommen. Die Frage nach Pflegegebern, Pflegearrangements undder Lebensqualität von Pflege­be­dürf­tigen und Pflegenden erfährt folglich in Politik und Gesellschaft eine immer stärkere Aufmerksamkeit.Studien zeigen, dass in der Europäischen Union die Pflege durch Angehörige oder ambulante Pflege­dienste im eigenen Haushalt stärker verbreitet sind als die institutionelle Pflege – wenn auch im Ländervergleichdas Ausmaß variiert.In der vorliegenden Studie wird untersucht, welche sozioökonomischenDeterminanten die informelle und formelle Pflege zu Hause bestimmen.Datengrundlage der Analyse ist der Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), der in zwei Wellen (2004 und 2006/07)in 12 (13) europäischen Staaten durchgeführt wurde. Die Determinanten der formellen und informellen Pflege werden im Querschnitt unterAnwendung verschie­dener Regressionsmodelle in elf Ländern der Europäischen Union untersucht, um Charakteristika der Pflegearrangementsaufzudecken. Dabei stehen drei Aspekte im Fokus: (1) die sozialen Kontakte und (2) die Lebens­qualität von Pflegebedürftigen und Pflegenden,sowie (3) die Erwerbstätigkeit von Frauen als wichtiger Einflussfaktor aufdas informelle Pflegepotential. In einer Längsschnittanalyse werden zusätzlich zeitliche Trends in den Über­gängen zwischen den Pflegearrangements untersucht. Abstract

cited By 24; International audience; The syntheses of PODA-b-PMA and PODA-grad-PMA copolymers using NMP are reported for the first time. The gradient copolymerization of ODA and MA was performed in a semi-batch system with a continuous addition of MA during ODA polymerization. The results showed that the semi-batch NMP proceeded in a living fashion, producing well-defined copolymers with narrow polydispersities and controlled molecular weights. The potentially semicrystal-line copolymers were characterized by techniques such as 1H NMR, SEC and DSC. Their surface crystallization has also been studied by AFM. © 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.

Abstract

Using Tapping Mode atomic force microscopy, we studied crystallization of polymers in confined cylindrical geometries of micro-phase separated asymmetric diblock copolymers, deposited in thin films onto solid substrates. We observed that in most cases crystallization occurs separately and independently in each cylinder of the mesophase pattern. We followed the kinetics of the crystallization process with time and found an influence of the lateral size of the cylindrical morphology on the rate of crystallization. The present data are compared to previous results on spherical mesophase patterns. The growth rate within one single cylinder was found to be not necessarily constant. Depending on the amount of crystallized material and the molecular weight, structural relaxations of the crystals can have very strong influence on the amorphous matrix and can even lead to the destruction of the mesophase pattern, allowing for break-out crystallization. As a consequence of break-out crystallization, crystallization kinetics changed considerably since the crystal growth was not limited anymore to the confinement imposed by the cylinders. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

This paper gives an overview of the use of poly(ferrocenylsilane)s in the surface patterningof silicon substrates. Due to the presence of iron and silicon in their main chain, poly(ferrocenylsilane)sshow a very high resistance to reactive ion etching, allowing one to transfer polymer patternsdirectly onto the substrate. Methods for introducing etch-resistant polymer patterns on substratesurfaces include soft lithography approaches such as microcontact printing, directed dewetting, andcapillary force lithography. Next to top-down methods, self-assembly strategies are discussed. Phaseseparation in thin films of asymmetric organic–organometallic block copolymers leads to theformation of nanoperiodic organometallic patterns. The use of such thin films as nanolithographictemplates is demonstrated. Surface patterning can also be realized using electrostatic self-assemblyof organometallic polyions. Layer-by-layer deposition of poly(ferrocenylsilane) polyanions and polycationson chemically patterned substrates allows one to guide the growth of multilayer thin films and toproduce patterned organometallic coatings.

In this work, a 2D numerical model for the prediction of ingot growth during the vacuum arc remelting process is presented. Simulation results are compared with experimental measurements and calculations of other authors. Different flow regimes and their transitions are observed in the molten metal pool, and the obtained characteristic process values are correlated with the analytically derived measure for the dominant flow type. Abstract

A computational model for the combined processes of quiescent and flow-induced crystallization of polymers is presented. This modelling should provide the necessary input data, in terms of the structure distribution in a product, for the prediction of mechanical properties and shape- and dimensional-stability. Rather then the shear rate as the driving force, a viscoelastic approach is proposed, where the viscoelastic stress (or the equivalent recoverable strain) with the highest relaxation time, a measure for the molecular orientation and stretch of the high end tail molecules, is the driving force for flow induced crystallization. Thus, the focus is on the polymer that experiences the flow, rather then on the flow itself. Results are presented for shear flow, extensional flow and for injection moulding conditions of an isotactic Polypropylene (iPP).

Abstract

In this chapter we have addressed issues concerning crystallization of flexible polymers from melt. We have described several examples where crystallization proceeds via a transient phase before a thermodynamically stable phase intervenes. With several examples it has been shown that transient state of a phase strongly depends on the crystal size. A phase that is thermodynamically stable during the initial stages of crystallization becomes metastable with crystal growth. Taking linear polyethylene as an example, it is shown that crystal size can be controlled during polymerization, thus the phase behavior. These findings have implications in polymer processing like sintering of intractable ultra high molecular weight polyethylene.

Abstract

Based on more than 2000 cardiac EBT studies using the above mentioned protocol it is possible like in an “One-Stop-Shop” to assess the extent of coronary atherosclerosis as Coronary Calcium Score (first part of the definition of coronary heart disease) to evaluate the degree, location and number of stenotic lesions in the proximal 5–6cm of the coronary arteries , to determine the severity of coronary heart disease by measuring the global and regional myocardial blood flow ( second part of the definition of coronary heart disease ) and to measure the functional left ventricular parameters giving the information if they are still in normal range or changed either as a sequel of the coronary heart disease or as a compensatory mechanism to keep myocardial blood flow as adequate as possible with respect to the balance of oxygen supply and demand.

Abstract

We present an experimental study supported by molecular simulations of the influence of the shape of alkyl side groups on the interactions and self-organization of supramolecular assemblies, built from bis-ureasubstituted toluene molecules deposited on Au(111) surfaces. In particular, we demonstrate the crucial importance of the presence of branched alkyl groups (i.e., ethylhexyl) that allow two adjacent supramolecular polymers to arrange closer to each other, leading to the formation of molecular "zippers". Thus, steric constraints at the level of individual molecules can generate improved Ordering between neighboring supramolecular polymers interacting with a planar substrate.

Abstract

The crystalline structures in thin films of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) diblock copolymers were studied in dependence on the degree of supercooling. Atomic force microscopy showed that the crystalline domains (lamellae) consist of grains, which are macroscopic at low and intermediate degrees of supercooling, but of submicrometer size for strong supercooling. Using grazing-incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering, we could determine the grain orientation distribution function which shows that the chain stems are perpendicular to the lamellae at low supercooling, but tilted at intermediate and strong supercooling. These results suggest that, at intermediate and strong supercooling, the crystalline PEO lamellae do not grow homogeneously, but by the formation of small crystallites at the growth front.
