Abstract Introduction The first-line treatment for acromegaly is transsphenoidal surgery. In approximately 50% of patients, however, a cure is not possible with surgery and alternatives are needed. Somatostatin analog therapy is the recommended first-line treatment in patients with such cases. Here we provide the first report of a high-dose lanreotide primary therapy in patients with acromegaly. Case presentation Six patients who were not suitable for surgery were given 60 mg of lanreotide (Autogel®) every four weeks. All patients were German nationals and Caucasian. When the response of our patients was unsatisfactory, the dose was increased sequentially to 90 mg every four weeks, 120 mg every four weeks, 120 mg every three weeks and 180 mg every three weeks. Treatment duration was 12 to 24 months. In all cases, the lanreotide dose was 120 mg every 4 weeks or higher. In five of our patients, growth hormone (GH) levels were successfully reduced (in three patients GH Tumor shrinkage or degeneration was observed in the five responding patients. No drug-related adverse events were noted. Conclusions These results suggest that lanreotide at high doses of 120 mg every four weeks or more is an effective first-line therapy for patients with acromegaly that surgery alone cannot treat.

The use of tracker dogs is the main method of finding hidden bodies, and in their search the dogs use typical scent patterns. “Electronic noses” can also be used to find and compare such patterns. Highly sensitive scent detectors have been successfully applied, e.g. in the examination of foodstuffs, in environmental tests and in material research. This study examined whether electronic sensors can be used to find bodies under outdoor conditions. The carcasses of two coneys were buried in soil at different depths. Over a period of 4 weeks, regular measurements were taken from the buried carcasses and from the control material. In addition, a “fingerprint” of the scent patterns was taken, and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analyses were performed. Adoption of human-robot collaboration is hindered by barriers in collaborative task design. A new approach for solving these problems is to empower operators in the design of their tasks. However, how this approach may affect user welfare or performance in industrial scenarios has not yet been studied. Therefore, in this research, the results of an experiment designed to identify the influences of the operator's self-designed task on physical ergonomics and task performance are presented. At first, a collaborative framework able to accept operator task definition via parts' locations and monitor the operator's posture is presented. Second, the framework is used to tailor a collaborative experience favoring decision autonomy using the SHOP4CF architecture. Finally, the framework is used to investigate how this personalization influences collaboration through a user study with untrained personnel on physical ergonomics. The results from this study are twofold. On one hand, a high degree of decision autonomy was felt by the operators when they were allowed to allocate the parts. On the other hand, high decision autonomy was not found to vary task efficiency nor the MSD risk level. Therefore, this study emphasizes that allowing operators to choose the position of the parts may help task acceptance and does not vary operators' physical ergonomics or task efficiency. Unfortunately, the test was limited to 16 participants and the measured risk level was medium.
