Abstract

This study compares the performance of the membrane bioreactor (MBR) inoculated with commercial baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) (MBRy) versus one inoculated with bacterial sludge (MBRb) for treatment of landfill leachate. The MBRb and MBRy were operated with a hydraulic retention time of 48 h, solids retention time of 60 d, and specific air demand based on membrane area of 0.6 m3 h−1 m−2. The MBRy was more efficient in removing chemical oxygen demand (COD) (68 ± 12%), color (79 ± 8%), ammoniacal nitrogen (58 ± 18%), and phosphorus (62 ± 19%) compared to MBRb, which showed removal efficiencies of 44 ± 18%, 46 ± 20%, 45 ± 17%, and 29 ± 15% for COD, color, ammoniacal nitrogen, and phosphorus. Furthermore, the MBRy had lower production of soluble microbial products, which are the main cause of membrane fouling, and so a lower membrane fouling potential. The average hydraulic permeability of the MBRy (32.23 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) was about four times higher than that of the MBRb (8.34 L m−2 h−1 bar−1). Thus using commercial baker’s yeasts as a MBR inoculum can enhance pollutants’ removal and membrane performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Este estudo analisa a viabilidade de um projeto de manutenção da APP de Cataguarino considerando não apenas fatores ambientais e econômicos, como também sociais. Para conter a degradação dessa APP Cataguarino, propõe-se o reflorestamento com a espécie exótica Eucalyptus spp., que apresenta expressivo nível de melhoramento genético, em produtividade e em qualidade. Concomitantemente, propõe-se o cercamento de um fragmento de APP de Cataguarino, de modo que o reflorestamento com espécies nativas ocorra de forma natural. Os resultados encontrados demonstram que, do ponto de vista do investidor privado, esse empreendimento não é lucrativo. Contudo, considerando as externalidades positivas geradas pela proteção ambiental na avaliação do projeto, sob a ótica social, percebeu-se que esse é viável, com uma TIR da ordem de 27% ao ano. Assim, políticas públicas que incentivem a preservação da mata da região considerada deverão trazer alta rentabilidade social.

108. Characteristics of women with breast cancer seen at reference services in the North of Minas Gerais

Abstract

To describe the main characteristics, including stage of disease and local treatment of patients admitted to two reference services for the treatment of breast cancer in the North of Minas Gerais.We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study. We evaluated medical records of 288 female patients with breast cancer admitted between January 2006 and December 2009, referred from a public hospital and a private clinic. Variables were analyzed using the chi-square test and multinomial logistic regression.68.1% of patients were referred from the public hospital. There was a predominance of patients over 50 years old (54.5%), married (59%) and with children (87.8%). The mean age of the population studied was 63 years old. Time between suspected cancer and confirmation of diagnosis was over six months in 42.7% of patients. Cancer diagnosis was late (stage III and IV) in 47.6% of patients. Family history of breast cancer was present in 20.1%, 20.8% of them had performed self-breast examination, and 41% had been submitted to a mammogram.There was a higher prevalence of stage III/IV patients from the public service when compared to the private sector. We found that the major factors associated with the late diagnosis of breast cancer were the delay between suspected and confirmed diagnosis, the absence of family history of breast cancer and not having a mammogram.

Abstract

Noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are characterized by a loss of dental structure at the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) caused by stress, biocorrosion, and attrition. Variations in occlusal loading can promote different stress and strain patterns on the CEJ. Restoration of NCCLs is part of lesion management; however, there is still no conclusive restorative protocol for NCCLs. This study aimed to evaluate the stress and strain distribution of maxillary premolars with NCCLs according to three factors: 1) restorative technique; 2) direction of occlusal loading; and 3) mechanical fatigue. Three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) and strain gauge testing were used to assess stress and strain, respectively. 3D-FEA orthotropic, linear, and elastic models were generated: sound tooth (SO); unrestored NCCL; or NCCL restored with glass ionomer; flowable composite resin; nanofilled composite resin (CR); lithium disilicate ceramic; and nanofilled composite resin core associated with a lithium disilicate laminate (CL). A 150-N compressive static load was applied in two conditions: axially in both cusps (Al); and at a 458 angle to the long axis of the tooth applied to the palatine cusp (Ol). For the experimental tests, specimens were treated as described previously, and one strain gauge was attached to the buccal surface of each tooth to record tooth strains before and after cyclic loading (200,000 cycles, 50 N). FEA showed that the association of NCCL and Ol resulted in higher stress values. CR and CL restorations showed the closest biomechanical behavior to SO for both loading types. Loaded Al or Ol specimens showed higher strain values after mechanical fatigue. Lower stress and strain were observed with Al when compared with Ol. The restoration of NCCLs with composite resin only or associated with ceramic laminates seems to be the best approach because the results for those groups were similar in biomechanical behaviors to sound teeth. Abstract

Background: Epidemiological studies have indicated a higher incidence of breast and gastric cancer in patients with nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL ± P) and their relatives, which can be based on similar genetic triggers segregated within family with NSCL ± P. Methods: This multicenter study evaluated the association of 9 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in AXIN2 and CDH1, representing genes consistently altered in breast and gastric tumors, with NSCL ± P in 223 trios (father, mother and patient with NSCL ± P) by transmission disequilibrium test (TDT). Results: Our results showed that the minor A allele of rs7210356 (p = 0.01) and the T-G-G-A-G haplotype formed by rs7591, rs7210356, rs4791171, rs11079571 and rs3923087 SNPs (p = 0.03) in AXIN2 were significantly undertransmitted to patients with NSCL ± P. In CDH1 gene, the C-G-A-A and A-G-A-G haplotypes composed by rs16260, rs9929218, rs7186053 and rs4783573 polymorphisms were respectively over-transmitted (p = 0.01) and under-transmitted (p = 0.008) from parents to the children with NSCL ± P. Conclusions: The results suggest that polymorphic variants in AXIN2 and CDH1 may be associated with NSCL ± P susceptibility, and reinforce the putative link between cancer and oral clefts. Abstract

Background: Information on fracture biomechanics has implications in materials research and clinical practice. The aim of this study was to analyse the influence of non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) size, restorative status and direction of occlusal loading on the biomechanical behaviour of mandibular premolars, using finite element analysis (FEA), strain gauge tests and fracture resistance tests.Methods: Ten buccal cusps were loaded on the outer and inner slopes to calculate the strain generated cervically. Data were collected for healthy teeth at baseline and progressively at three lesion depths (0.5 mm, 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm), followed by restoration with resin composite. The magnitude and distribution of von Mises stress and maximum principal stress were simulated at all stages using FEA, and fracture strength was also determined (n = 7 per group).Results: There were significant effects of the lesion size and loading directions on stress, strain and fracture resistance (p < 0.05). Fracture resistance values decreased with increase in lesion size, but returned to baseline with restorations.Conclusions: Combined assessment of computer-based and experimental techniques provide an holistic approach to characterize the biomechanical behaviour of teeth with both unrestored and restored NCCLs. Abstract

Apresenta-se o caso clínico de uma mulher de 56 anos, raça branca, com úlcera duodenal e esofagite com 3 anos de evolução apesar de terapêutica mantida com bloqueadores dos receptores H2. O valor da gastrina sérica basal estava ligeiramenteacima dos limites superiores do normal. O teste de estimulação de secretina foi sugestivo de gastrinoma. Com tomografia axial computorizada e arteriografia selectiva não se localizou o tumor. Na laparotomia exploradora encontrou-se um nódulo pilórico que se demonstrou corresponder ao gastrinoma. Dezoito meses após a cirurgia a doente encontrou-se assintomática e os exames de controle são negativos.
