Abstract

The convenient myth of Wilhelm Reich is that he “lost his mind” in the early 1950s, if not before, and that the last seven years of his life and work — the orgone and radiation experiments, the cloudbuster, and flying saucer intrigues — present an embarrassment. Even the counterculture that embraced Reich, not least William S. Burroughs, Norman Mailer, and filmmaker Dušan Makavejev, tended to distort his theory. The psychosis attached to Reich by his detractors was the culmination of decades of scapegoating by psychoanalysts, Nazis, communists, and conservatives. But Reich’s environmental and Cold War preoccupations and his slow-burning fascination with UFO phenomena were not signs of a madness incipient since his break with Sigmund Freud. They anticipated and reflected much in the American psyche. Defining the presence of a “cinematic self” in the misunderstood analyst once considered an heir to Freud, Wilhelm Reich versus the Flying Saucers rejects orthodox portrayals of Reich’s final years as merely pathological. Combining original analysis and evidence from the Wilhelm Reich Archive, James Reich uncovers the fatal moments in the psychologist’s uncanny identification with the “spaceman,” and the myth of a scientist lost to his own grandiosity and paranoia. Taking seriously the influence of The Day the Earth Stood Still, Bad Day at Black Rock, and other pop cultural narratives on Reich, this “psychoanalytic detective story” concerns existential traps, conscious and unconscious collaborations and betrayals by disciples, and unidentified flying object-relations. Reich’s is an atomic-age passion narrative. Vitally, Reich’s story could be ours. The author is not related to his subject.

Here we present the international Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) Characterizing Health Associated Risks and Your Baseline Disease In SARS-COV-2 (CHARYBDIS) framework for standardisation and analysis of COVID-19 RWD.Patients and Methods: We conducted a descriptive retrospective database study using a federated network of data partners in the United States, Europe (the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, Germany, France and Italy) and Asia (South Korea and China). The study protocol and analytical package were released on 11th June 2020 and are iteratively updated via GitHub. We identified three non-mutually exclusive cohorts of 4,537,153 individuals with a clinical COVID-19 diagnosis or positive test, 886,193 hospitalized with COVID-19, and 113,627 hospitalized with COVID-19 requiring intensive services.Results: We aggregated over 22,000 unique characteristics describing patients with COVID-19. All comorbidities, symptoms, medications, and outcomes are described by cohort in aggregate counts and are readily available online. Globally, we observed similarities in the USA and Europe: more women diagnosed than men but more men hospitalized than women, most diagnosed cases between 25 and 60 years of age versus most hospitalized cases between 60 and 80 years of age. South Korea differed with more women than men hospitalized. Common comorbidities included type 2 diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease and heart disease. Common presenting symptoms were dyspnea, cough and fever. Symptom data availability was more common in hospitalized cohorts than diagnosed.Conclusion: We constructed a global, multi-centre view to describe trends in COVID-19 progression, management and evolution over time. By characterising baseline variability in patients and geography, our work provides critical context that may otherwise be misconstrued as data quality issues. There is a lack of randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of various treatment options for GPP. TNFα inhibitors have proven to be effective and are increasingly used in this indication. In the current paper, we present two patients with GPP treated with infliximab (Ifx) and a literature review appraising currently available data on the use of Ifx in GPP. Case 1 was a 73-year-old woman with GPP who exhibited lack of treatment response or primary intolerance to standard therapeutic options (high-dose acitretin, methotrexate, cyclosporine A, and methylprednisolone). However, Ifx therapy combined with low-dose acitretin resulted in rapid and sustained resolution of skin lesions. Case 2 was a 60-year-old man with GPP and numerous comorbidities who was initially treated with Ifx in combination with methotrexate, with good treatment response for 9 months. Following an infection-induced flare of GPP at week 38, methotrexate was discontinued in favor of low-dose acitretin and Ifx continued. This regimen again resulted in rapid resolution of pustules. We present these cases to highlight the advantage of long-term Ifx therapy with low-dose acitretin in GPP.Keywords: infliximab, anti-TNFα, generalized pustular psoriasis, acitretin

Abstract

The differential branching fraction and angular coefficients of \ensuremath{\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b \rightarrow pK^-\mu^+\mu^-}\xspace decays are measured in bins of the dimuon mass squared and dihadron mass. The analysis is performed using a data set corresponding to 9$\aunit{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the $\mbox{LHCb}$ detector between 2011 and 2018. The data are consistent with receiving contributions from a mixture of $\it{\Lambda}$ resonances with different spin-parity quantum numbers. Abstract

Vibrational Raman scattering -- a process where light exchanges energy with a molecular vibration through inelastic scattering -- is most fundamentally described in a quantum framework where both light and vibration are quantized. When the Raman scatterer is embedded inside a plasmonic nanocavity, as in some sufficiently controlled implementations of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), the coupled system realizes an optomechanical cavity, where coherent and parametrically amplified light-vibration interaction becomes a resource for vibrational state engineering and nanoscale nonlinear optics. The purpose of this Perspective is to clarify the connection between the languages and parameters used in the fields of molecular cavity optomechanics (McOM) vs. its conventional, `macroscopic' counterpart, and to summarize the main results achieved so far in McOM and the most pressing experimental and theoretical challenges. We aim to make the theoretical framework of molecular cavity optomechanics practically usable for the SERS and nanoplasmonics community at large. While quality factors ($Q$'s) and mode volumes ($V$'s) essentially describe the performance of a nanocavity in enhancing light-matter interaction, we point to the light-cavity coupling efficiencies ($\eta$'s) and optomechanical cooperativities ($\mathcal{C}$'s) as the key parameters for molecular optomechanics. As an illustration of the significance of these quantities, we investigate the feasibility of observing optomechanically induced transparency with a molecular vibration -- a measurement that would allow for a direct estimate of the optomechanical cooperativity., Comment: Includes an Appendix

Abstract

We consider the generative problem of sampling from an unknown distribution for which only a sufficiently large number of training samples are available. In this paper, we build on previous work combining Schr\"odinger bridges and Langevin dynamics. A key bottleneck of this approach is the exponential dependence of the required training samples on the dimension, $d$, of the ambient state space. We propose a localization strategy which exploits conditional independence of conditional expectation values. Localization thus replaces a single high-dimensional Schr\"odinger bridge problem by $d$ low-dimensional Schr\"odinger bridge problems over the available training samples. As for the original approach, the localized sampler is stable and geometric ergodic. The sampler also naturally extends to conditional sampling and to Bayesian inference. We demonstrate the performance of our proposed scheme through experiments on a Gaussian problem with increasing dimensions and on a stochastic subgrid-scale parametrization conditional sampling problem.

Abstract

The ${{\Xi}_{b}^{0(-)}\to{\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}(\to D^{+(0)}{\Lambda}){\pi}^{-}}$ decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of ${\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}$ baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, recorded by the~$\text{LHCb}$ experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the ${\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}$ baryons is determined to be $3/2^{+}$ with a significance of more than $6.5\sigma$ ($3.5\sigma$) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the ${{\Xi}_{b}^{0(-)}\to{\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}{\pi}^{-}}$ transitions are measured to be $-0.92\pm0.10\pm0.05$ ($-0.92\pm0.16\pm0.22$), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Abstract

Measurements are presented of the cross-section for the central exclusive production of $J/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\psi(2S)\to\mu^+\mu^-$ processes in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 $ TeV with 2016-2018 data. They are performed by requiring both muons to be in the LHCb acceptance (with pseudorapidity $2<\eta_{\mu^\pm} < 4.5$) and mesons in the rapidity range $2.0 < y < 4.5$. Abstract

A time-dependent, flavour-tagged measurement of $CP$ violation is performed with ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ and ${B^{0}_{s}}\rightarrow{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}$ decays, using data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. In ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ decays the $CP$-violation parameters are measured to be \begin{align} S_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = -0.552 \pm 0.100\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}, \nonumber \newline C_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = \phantom{-}0.128 \pm0.103\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} In $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}$ decays the $CP$-violating parameter formulation in terms of $\phi_{s}$ and $|\lambda|$ results in \begin{align} \phi_{s} & = -0.086 \pm 0.106 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.028\,\text{(syst)} \,\text{rad}, \nonumber \newline |\lambda_{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}| & = \phantom{-}1.145 \pm 0.126\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.031\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} These results represent the most precise single measurement of the $CP$-violation parameters in their respective channels. Abstract

A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b\to\it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-(h=\pi, K)$, followed by $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{\Lambda} h^+$ with $\it{\Lambda}\to \it{p} \pi^-$ or $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{p}\it{K}^0_\mathrm{S}$ decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 $\mathrm{Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity ($C\!P$) asymmetries are measured, with no significant $C\!P$ violation observed. For the first time, the $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b \to \it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-$ decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters $\alpha, \beta$ and $\gamma$ are obtained for $\it{\Lambda}_c^+$ decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon $\it{\Lambda}$ decay is provided. Abstract

A search for violation of the charge-parity $C\!P$ symmetry in the $D^+\rightarrow K^-K^+\pi^+$ decay is presented, with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$, collected at a center-of-mass energy of $13$ TeV with the LHCb detector. A novel model-independent technique is used to compare the $D^+$ and $D^-$ phase-space distributions, with instrumental asymmetries subtracted using the $D^+_{s}\rightarrow K^-K^+\pi^+$ decay as a control channel. The $p$-value for the hypothesis of $C\!P$ conservation is $8.1\%$. The $C\!P$ asymmetry observables $A_{C\!P|S}^{\phi\pi^+} = (0.95 \pm 0.43_{stat} \pm 0.26_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ and $A_{C\!P|S}^{\overline{K}^{*0}K^+} = (-0.26 \pm 0.56_{ stat} \pm 0.18_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ are also measured. Abstract

This paper deals with time-fractional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations, which are characterized by the coexistence of stochastic noise and a fractional power of the Laplacian. We establish sufficient conditions for the existence and approximate controllability of a unique mild solution to time-fractional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. Using a fixed point technique, we first demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of a mild solution to the equation under consideration. We then establish approximate controllability results by using the concepts of fractional calculus, semigroup theory, functional analysis and stochastic analysis.

Abstract

The rare electromagnetic $J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-\mu^+\mu^-$ decay is observed with a significance greatly exceeding the discovery threshold, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during 2016-2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\text{fb}^{-1}$. The rate of this decay is measured relative to that of the $J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-$ mode. Using the QED model for the four-muon decay in the efficiency estimation, its branching fraction is determined to be \begin{equation*} {\mathcal{B}}(J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-\mu^+\mu^-) = (1.13\pm0.10\pm0.05\pm0.01)\times 10^{-6}, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the $J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-$ decay., Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://lbfence.cern.ch/alcm/public/analysis/full-details/3453 (LHCb public pages)

143. Collective states of {\alpha}-sexithiophene chains inside boron nitride nanotubes

Abstract

Nanotubes align molecules into one dimensional chains creating collective states through the coupling of the molecular transition dipole moments. These collective excitations have strong fluorescence, narrow bandwidth, and shifted emission/absorption energies. We study the optical properties of {\alpha}-sexithiophene chains in boron nitride nanotubes by combining fluorescence with far- and near-field absorption spectroscopy. The inner nanotube diameter determines the number of encapsulated molecular chains. A single chain of {\alpha}-sexithiophene molecules has an optical absorption and emission spectrum that is red-shifted by almost 300 meV compared to the monomer emission, which is much larger than expected from dipole-dipole coupling. The collective state splits into excitation and emission channels with a Stokes shift of 200 meV for chains with two or more files. Our study emphasises the formation of a delocalized collective state through Coulomb coupling of the transition moments that shows a remarkable tuneability in transition energy.

144. Feshbach resonances in cold collisions as a benchmark for state of the art ab initio theory

Abstract

Quantum resonances in collisions and reactions are a sensitive probe of the intermolecular forces. They may dominate the final quantum state distribution, as recently observed for Feshbach resonances in a cold collision experiment (Science 380, 77 (2023)). This raises the question whether the sensitivity of such measurements is sufficient to assess the quality of theoretical models for the interaction. We here compare measured collision cross sections to those obtained with exact quantum coupled-channels scattering calculations for three different ab initio potential energy surfaces. We find that the ability to test the correct prediction of energy redistribution over molecular degrees of freedom is within reach, requiring only a modest improvement in energy resolution of current experiments. Such improvement will enable the separation of individual resonances and allow for an unambiguous experimental test of different theory approaches.

145. Double tips for in-plane polarized near-field microscopy and spectroscopy

Abstract

Near-field optical microscopy and spectroscopy provide high-resolution imaging below the diffraction limit, crucial in physics, chemistry, and biology for studying molecules, nanoparticles, and viruses. These techniques use a sharp metallic tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM) to enhance incoming and scattered light by excited near-fields at the tip apex leading to high sensitivity and a spatial resolution of a few nanometers. However, this restricts the near-field orientation to out-of-plane polarization, limiting optical polarization choices. We introduce double tips that offer in-plane polarization for enhanced imaging and spectroscopy. These double tips provide superior enhancement over single tips, although with a slightly lower spatial resolution (~30nm). They enable advanced studies of nanotubes, graphene defects, and transition metal dichalcogenides, benefiting from polarization control. The double tips allow varied polarization in tip-enhanced Raman scattering and selective excitation of transverse-electric and -magnetic polaritons, expanding the range of nanoscale samples that can be studied.

Abstract

The decays of the $\chi_{b1}(1P)$, $\chi_{b2}(1P)$, $\chi_{b1}(2P)$ and $\chi_{b2}(2P)$~mesons into the~$\Upsilon(1S)\mu^+\mu^-$ final state are observed with a high significance using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb$^{-1}$. The newly observed decays together with the $\Upsilon(2S)\rightarrow \Upsilon(1S)\pi^+\pi^-$ and $\Upsilon(3S)\rightarrow \Upsilon(2S)\pi^+\pi^-$ decay modes are used for precision measurements of the mass and mass splittings for the hidden-beauty states., Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2024-025.html

147. EMTeC: A Corpus of Eye Movements on Machine-Generated Texts

Abstract

The Eye Movements on Machine-Generated Texts Corpus (EMTeC) is a naturalistic eye-movements-while-reading corpus of 107 native English speakers reading machine-generated texts. The texts are generated by three large language models using five different decoding strategies, and they fall into six different text type categories. EMTeC entails the eye movement data at all stages of pre-processing, i.e., the raw coordinate data sampled at 2000 Hz, the fixation sequences, and the reading measures. It further provides both the original and a corrected version of the fixation sequences, accounting for vertical calibration drift. Moreover, the corpus includes the language models' internals that underlie the generation of the stimulus texts: the transition scores, the attention scores, and the hidden states. The stimuli are annotated for a range of linguistic features both at text and at word level. We anticipate EMTeC to be utilized for a variety of use cases such as, but not restricted to, the investigation of reading behavior on machine-generated text and the impact of different decoding strategies; reading behavior on different text types; the development of new pre-processing, data filtering, and drift correction algorithms; the cognitive interpretability and enhancement of language models; and the assessment of the predictive power of surprisal and entropy for human reading times. Abstract

We present a full-size engineering model of GALI - The GAmma-ray burst Localizing Instrument, composed of 362 CsI(Tl) small cubic scintillators, distributed within a small volume of $\sim2$l, and read out by silicon photo-multipliers. GALI can provide directional information about GRBs with high angular accuracy from angle-dependent mutual obstruction between its scintillators. Here, we demonstrate GALI's laboratory experiments with an $^{241}$Am source, which achieved directional reconstruction of $<$3$^\circ$ accuracy, in agreement with our Monte-Carlo simulations. GALI has a wide field view of the unobstructed sky. With its current cubic configuration, GALI's effective area varies between 97 cm$^2$ (face on) and 138 cm$^2$ (from the corners at 45$^\circ$), which is verified in the current experiment.

Abstract

Digital Simulations (DS) provide safe environments where users interact with an agent through conversational prompts, providing engaging learning experiences that can be used to train teacher candidates in realistic classroom scenarios. These simulations usually include open-ended questions, allowing teacher candidates to express their thoughts but complicating an automatic response analysis. To address this issue, we have evaluated Large Language Models (LLMs) to identify characteristics (user behaviors) in the responses of DS for teacher education. We evaluated the performance of DeBERTaV3 and Llama 3, combined with zero-shot, few-shot, and fine-tuning. Our experiments discovered a significant variation in the LLMs' performance depending on the characteristic to identify. Additionally, we noted that DeBERTaV3 significantly reduced its performance when it had to identify new characteristics. In contrast, Llama 3 performed better than DeBERTaV3 in detecting new characteristics and showing more stable performance. Therefore, in DS where teacher educators need to introduce new characteristics because they change depending on the simulation or the educational objectives, it is more recommended to use Llama 3. These results can guide other researchers in introducing LLMs to provide the highly demanded automatic evaluations in DS.

150. Flusion: Integrating multiple data sources for accurate influenza predictions

Abstract

Over the last ten years, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has organized an annual influenza forecasting challenge with the motivation that accurate probabilistic forecasts could improve situational awareness and yield more effective public health actions. Starting with the 2021/22 influenza season, the forecasting targets for this challenge have been based on hospital admissions reported in the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) surveillance system. Reporting of influenza hospital admissions through NHSN began within the last few years, and as such only a limited amount of historical data are available for this signal. To produce forecasts in the presence of limited data for the target surveillance system, we augmented these data with two signals that have a longer historical record: 1) ILI+, which estimates the proportion of outpatient doctor visits where the patient has influenza; and 2) rates of laboratory-confirmed influenza hospitalizations at a selected set of healthcare facilities. Our model, Flusion, is an ensemble that combines gradient boosting quantile regression models with a Bayesian autoregressive model. The gradient boosting models were trained on all three data signals, while the autoregressive model was trained on only the target signal; all models were trained jointly on data for multiple locations. Flusion was the top-performing model in the CDC's influenza prediction challenge for the 2023/24 season. In this article we investigate the factors contributing to Flusion's success, and we find that its strong performance was primarily driven by the use of a gradient boosting model that was trained jointly on data from multiple surveillance signals and locations. These results indicate the value of sharing information across locations and surveillance signals, especially when doing so adds to the pool of available training data.
