Abstract

A phase transition for bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional anisotropic optical lattice is considered. If the tunnelling rates in two directions are different, the system can undergo a transition between a two-dimensional superfluid and a one-dimensional Mott insulating array of strongly coupled tubes. The connection to other lattice models is exploited in order to better understand the phase transition. Critical properties are obtained using quantum Monte Carlo calculations. These critical properties are related to correlation properties of the bosons and a criterion for commensurate filling is established. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

144. Collagen XVIII modulation is altered during progression of oral dysplasia and carcinoma.

Abstract

Background: Collagen XVIII is a ubiquitous basement membrane (BM) component and a precursor of endostatin. Methods: Using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, we studied the expression and localization of collagen XVIII in different stages of normal oral wound healing, epithelial dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Results: In mild epithelial dysplasias collagen XVIII appeared as a continuous signal in the BM, whereas in severe epithelial dysplasias and in the invasive areas of oral SCCs collagen XVIII was absent. In situ hybridization showed that collagen XVIII mRNA expression did not decrease in severe dysplasia or oral carcinoma samples when compared with the mild dysplasias. Conclusions: The results indicate that the absence of collagen XVIII protein in severe oral dysplasias is related to the processing of the protein rather than to changes in mRNA expression. Abstract

The effects of carbocyclic thromboxane A2 (cTXA2; 10−6 mol L−1) on membrane potential and cytosolic Ca2+ concentration were measured with the whole-cell patch-clamp or the fura-2 method, respectively, at rat myenteric ganglia. cTXA2 caused a hyperpolarization of myenteric neurones from −19.3 ± 2.5 to −29.3 ± 2.3 mV. In addition, the eicosanoid potentiated the carbachol-induced depolarization from 4.2 ± 1.0 mV under control conditions to 11.1 ± 1.1 mV in the presence of the cTXA2 ( n = 9). The hyperpolarization was abolished by internal application of CsCl (140 mmol L−1), a non-selective blocker of K+ channels, or EGTA (11 mmol L−1in the pipette solution), a chelator of intracellular Ca2+. A similar inhibition was observed in the presence of charybdotoxin (10−7 mol L−1). Fura-2 imaging experiments revealed a cTXA2-evoked increase in the intracellular Ca2+ concentration as indicated by a rise in the fura-2 ratio signal. This response was mediated by a release of Ca2+ from intracellular stores as sarcoplasmic-endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase blockade with cyclopiazonic acid (5 × 10−5 mol L−1) completely abolished the response to cTXA2. A similar inhibition was observed after blockade of phospholipase C with U-73122 (10−5 mol L−1). These results suggest an activation of Ca2+-activated K+ channels by cTXA2 after stimulation of phospholipase C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The effect of the steroid hormone progesterone on transepithelial sodium transport was measured in confluent monolayers of the A6-cell line from Xenopus kidney. Apical permeabilization with Amphotericin B enabled us to measure the Na+/K+-pump current, and current-fluctuation analysis was used to analyze changes in apical channel density and gating characteristics. Basolateral progesterone (22.2 µM) had a rapid inhibitory effect on the Na+/K+-pump current, and a corresponding decrease in Na+ channel density. The effect occurred within some minutes and took about 50 min to reach a new steady state, in which 45% of the macroscopic current (Isc) was inhibited. Progesterone also inhibits the hypo-osmotic stimulation of Na+ channels which occurs in untreated monolayers. Compared with the known effects of adrenal steroids, our results show a rapid inhibitory action of a steroid hormone on Na+ absorption. The time profile of the progesterone effect suggests, at least in the first minutes, a non-genomic action of progesterone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate pelvic masses by B-mode and Doppler ultrasonography for identification of ovarian malignancies. STUDY DESIGN: A previously described scoring system for pelvic masses was applied in 310 women, and the lesions were classified into four groups according to the ultrasonographic structure. Pulsatility index values of vessels within the tumor and the contralateral ovary and of both uterine arteries were determined. RESULTS: A total of 259 masses were benign and 51 were malignant. The scoring system and classification into morphologic groups revealed similar sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. Intratumoral and opposite ovarian blood flow and ipsilateral and contralateral uterine blood flow did not differ in benign and malignant masses except in cases of benign lesions in postmenopausal women. In malignant lesions a lower pulsatility index (0.94 ± 0.4) was measured than in benign lesions (1.06 ± 0.4, p < 0.05), although a remarkable overlap was found.
