The roll-out of technologies like 5G and the need for multi-terabit bandwidth in backbone networks requires networking companies to make significant investments to keep up with growing service demands. For lower capital expenditure and faster time-to-market, companies can resort to anything-as-a-service providers to lease virtual resources. Nevertheless, existing virtualization technologies are still lagging behind next-generation networks' requirements. This paper breaks the terabit barrier by introducing a hybrid FPGA-ASIC architecture to virtualize programmable forwarding planes. In contrast to existing solutions, our architecture involves an ASIC that multiplexes network flows between programmable virtual switches running in an FPGA capable of full and partial reconfiguration, enabling virtual switch hot-swapping. Our evaluation shows the feasibility of a switch virtualization architecture capable of achieving a combined throughput of 3.2 Tbps by having up to 26 virtual switch instances in parallel with low resource occupation overhead., Comment: ISVLSI

Pentadiamond is a recently proposed new carbon allotrope consisting of a network of pentagonal rings where both sp$^2$ and sp$^3$ hybridization are present. In this work we investigated the mechanical and electronic properties, as well as, the thermal stability of pentadiamond using DFT and fully atomistic reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We also investigated its properties beyond the elastic regime for three different deformation modes: compression, tensile and shear. The behavior of pentadiamond under compressive deformation showed strong fluctuations in the atomic positions which are responsible for the strain softening at strains beyond the linear regime, which characterizes the plastic flow. As we increase temperature, as expected, Young's modulus values decrease, but this variation (up to 300 K) is smaller than 10\% (from 347.5 to 313.6 GPa), but the fracture strain is very sensitive, varying from $\sim$44\% at 1K to $\sim$5\% at 300K.

We present a new data-driven method to provide probabilistic stability guarantees for black-box switched linear systems. By sampling a finite number of observations of trajectories, we construct approximate Lyapunov functions and deduce the stability of the underlying system with a user-defined confidence. The number of observations required to attain this confidence level on the guarantee is explicitly characterized. Our contribution is twofold: first, we propose a novel approach for common quadratic Lyapunov functions, relying on sensitivity analysis of a quasi-convex optimization program. By doing so, we improve a recently proposed bound. Then, we show that our new approach allows for extension of the method to Sum of Squares Lyapunov functions, providing further improvement for the technique. This paper tackles state feedback control of switched linear systems under arbitrary switching. We propose a data-driven control framework that allows to compute a stabilizing state feedback using only a finite set of observations of trajectories with quadratic and sum of squares (SOS) Lyapunov functions. We do not require any knowledge on the dynamics or the switching signal, and as a consequence, we aim at solving \emph{uniform} stabilization problems in which the feedback is stabilizing for all possible switching sequences. In order to generalize the solution obtained from trajectories to the actual system, probabilistic guarantees on the obtained quadratic or SOS Lyapunov function are derived in the spirit of scenario optimization. For the quadratic Lyapunov technique, the generalization relies on a geometric analysis argument, while, for the SOS Lyapunov technique, we follow a sensitivity analysis argument. In order to deal with high-dimensional systems, we also develop parallelized schemes for both techniques. We show that, with some modifications, the data-driven quadratic Lyapunov technique can be extended to LQR control design. A thorough investigation of local structure, influencing macroscopic properties of the solid is of potential interest. We investigated the local structure of GaN nanowires (NWs) with different native defect concentration synthesized by the chemical vapor deposition technique. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis and semi-empirical and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to address the effect of dopant incorporation along with other defects on the co-ordination number and bond length values. The decrease of the bond length values along preferential crystal axes in the local tetrahedral structure of GaN emphasizes the preferred lattice site for oxygen doping. The preferential bond length contraction is corroborated by the simulations. We have also studied the impact on the local atomic configuration of GaN NWs with Al incorporation. AlxGa1-xN NWs are synthesized via novel ion beam techniques of ion beam mixing and post-irradiation diffusion process. The change in the local tetrahedral structure of GaN with Al incorporation is investigated by EXAFS analysis. The analysis provides a clear understanding of choosing a suitable process for ternary III-nitride random alloy formation. The local structure study with the EXAFS analysis is corroborated with the observed macroscopic properties studied using Raman spectroscopy., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures

In this paper, we present a geometric approach for computing the controlled invariant set of a continuous-time control system. While the problem is well studied for in the ellipsoidal case, this family is quite conservative for constrained or switched linear systems. We reformulate the invariance of a set as an inequality for its support function that is valid for any convex set. This produces novel algebraic conditions for the invariance of sets with polynomial or piecewise quadratic support function. We study quasi-convex optimization problems, where only a subset of the constraints can be sampled, and yet one would like a probabilistic guarantee on the obtained solution with respect to the initial (unknown) optimization problem. Even though our results are partly applicable to general quasi-convex problems, in this work we introduce and study a particular subclass, which we call "quasi-linear problems". We provide optimality conditions for these problems. Thriving on this, we extend the approach of chance-constrained convex optimization to quasi-linear optimization problems. Finally, we show that this approach is useful for the stability analysis of black-box switched linear systems, from a finite set of sampled trajectories. It allows us to compute probabilistic upper bounds on the JSR of a large class of switched linear systems.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans (PCDD/Fs) are a group of organic chemicals containing three-ring structures that can be substituted with one to eight chlorine atoms, leading to 75 dioxin and 135 furan congeners. As endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), they can alter physiological processes causing a number of disorders. In this study, quantitative structure–toxicity relationship (QSTR) studies were used to determine the correlations between the PCDD/Fs’ molecular structures and various toxicity endpoints. Strong QSTR models, with the coefficients of determination (r2) values greater than 0.95 and ANOVA p-values less than 0.0001 were established between molecular descriptors and the endpoints of bioconcentration, fathead minnow LC50, and Daphnia magna LC50. The ability of PCDD/Fs to bind to several nuclear receptors was investigated via molecular docking studies. The results show comparable, and in some instances better, binding affinities of PCDD/Fs toward the receptors relative to their natural agonistic and antagonistic ligands, signifying possible interference with the receptors’ natural biological activities. These studies were accompanied by the molecular dynamics simulations of the top-binding PCDD/Fs to show changes in the receptor–ligand complexes during binding and provide insights into these compounds’ ability to interfere with transcription and thereby modify gene expression. This introspection of PCDD/Fs at the molecular level provides a deeper understanding of these compounds’ toxicity and opens avenues for future studies.

In universities, perceived unfairness is associated with negative outcomes, such as dissatisfaction, lower engagement, higher drop-out and stress, and poorer mental health. It is, however, still unclear which aspects constitute perceived unfairness in students. Therefore, this qualitative study explored students’ perceptions of unfairness with twenty semi-structured interviews. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed following Mayring’s qualitative content analysis. A set of main codes and subcodes was developed and refined. The identified sources of unfairness can be summarized as organizational aspects, such as the registration and administration processes, the treatment of students, including the behavioural patterns of lecturers and university staff, and the individual situation of students. This study identified different sources of perceived unfairness in the university setting, potentially related to less engagement, higher drop-out rates, and worse mental health of the students. To keep students engaged and healthy, it seems beneficial to address the sources of unfairness.

- Abstract
Over the modern satellite era, substantial climatic changes have been observed in the Antarctic, including atmospheric and oceanic warming, ice sheet thinning and a general Antarctic-wide expansion of sea ice, followed by a more recent rapid loss. Although these changes, featuring strong zonal asymmetry, are partially influenced by increasing greenhouse gas emissions and stratospheric ozone depletion, tropical–polar teleconnections are believed to have a role through Rossby wave dynamics. In this Review, we synthesize understanding of tropical teleconnections to the Southern Hemisphere extratropics arising from the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, focusing on the mechanisms and long-term climatic impacts. These teleconnections have contributed to observed Antarctic and Southern Ocean changes, including regional rapid surface warming, pre-2015 sea ice expansion and its sudden reduction thereafter, changes in ocean heat content and accelerated thinning of most of the Antarctic ice sheet. However, due to limited observations and inherent model biases, uncertainties remain in understanding and assessing the importance of these teleconnections versus those arising from greenhouse gases, ozone recovery and internal variability. Sustained pan-Antarctic efforts towards long-term observations, and more realistic dynamics and parameterizations in high-resolution climate models, offer opportunities to reduce these uncertainties.

Background and objectiveTo analyze the association between different domains and intensities of physical activity (PA) in adults.Methods269 participants were randomly selected in a community-dwelling representative sampling process. The habitual PA practice was assessed in different domains (occupational, sports practice, and leisure time/commuting) using Baecke's questionnaire and in different intensities (light, moderate, vigorous, and very vigorous) by accelerometry. Linear regression models analyzed the association between variables.ResultsModerate and moderate-to-vigorous PA was positively associated with the three PA domain scores. Vigorous PA was associated with sports practice and leisure time/commuting PA. Only sports practice was associated with very vigorous-intensity PA (β = 1.32; 95% CI = 0.29; 2.35). Different associations were observed in stratified analyses according to sex and age groups. Men and younger participants showed an association of domain scores with higher intensity PA than their counterparts.ConclusionThe findings suggest that higher intensities of PA were observed primarily in leisure time/commuting PA and sports practice, and this association varied according to sex and age.

When running on a curve, the lower limbs interact with the ground to redirect the trajectory of the centre of mass of the body (CoM). The goal of this paper is to understand how the trajectory of the CoM and the work done to maintain its movements relative to the surroundings (Wcom) are modified as a function of running speed and radius of curvature. Eleven participants ran at different speeds on a straight line and on circular curves with a 6 m and 18 m curvature. The trajectory of the CoM and Wcom were calculated using force-platforms measuring the ground reaction forces and infrared cameras recording the movements of the pelvis. To follow a circular path, runners overcompensate the rotation of their trajectory during contact phases. The deviation from the circular path increases when the radius of curvature decreases and speed increases. Interestingly, an asymmetry between the inner and outer lower limbs emerges as speed increases. The method to evaluate Wcom on a straight-line was adapted using a referential that rotates at heel strike and remains fixed during the whole step cycle. In an 18 m radius curve and at low speeds on a 6 m radius, Wcom changes little compared to a straight-line run. Whereas at 6 m s-1 on a 6 m radius, Wcom increases by ~25%, due to an augmentation in the work to move the CoM laterally. Understanding these adaptations provides valuable insight for sports sciences, aiding in optimizing training and performance in sports with multidirectional movements.

Background: Time spent on screen devices affects sleep quality and duration leading to several health impairments in youth. Although physical activity (PA) benefits sleep patterns and decreases screen time in adolescents, it is unclear whether the relationship between sleep quality/duration and screen time could be influenced by PA levels. Objective: To analyze the association between sleep quality and duration with screen time in Brazilian adolescents according PA levels. Methods: The sample included 1010 adolescents aged 13.2 ± 2.4 years (n = 556 females − 55 % of the sample). Sleep quality and sleep duration, and PA were assessed by Mini Sleep and Baecke questionnaires, respectively. Participants in the highest quartile were classified as physically active. Screen time was analyzed by the self-reported number of hours spent on different screen devices (i.e., television, computer, videogame, and cellphone/tablet). Participants in the highest tertile were classified as having high screen time. Sex, age, and body mass index were considered covariates in binary logistic regression models. Results: Poor sleep quality was observed in 52.3 % of the sample, whereas 46.6 % reported sleeping less than eight hours/day. High screen time was associated with poor sleep quality (OR = 1.45; 95 %CI = 1.01–2.12) and insufficient sleep duration (OR = 1.52; 95 %CI = 1.01–2.03) in adolescents insufficiently active. There were no associations between screen time and sleep parameters in active adolescents. Conclusion: High screen time was associated with poor sleep quality and insufficient sleep duration only in insufficiently active adolescents. These results suggest that high PA levels may contribute to improving sleep patterns in pediatric population.

In this paper, we propose an approach for computing invariant sets of discrete-time nonlinear systems by lifting the nonlinear dynamics into a higher dimensional linear model. In particular, we focus on the \emph{maximal admissible invariant set} contained in some given constraint set. For special types of nonlinear systems, which can be exactly immersed into higher dimensional linear systems with state transformations, invariant sets of the original nonlinear system can be characterized using the higher dimensional linear representation. For general nonlinear systems without the immersibility property, \emph{approximate immersions} are defined in a local region within some tolerance and linear approximations are computed by leveraging the fixed-point iteration technique for invariant sets. In particular, this paper focuses on polyhedral invariant sets. We propose a data-driven method based on the one step forward reachable set. For formal verification of the proposed method, we introduce the concepts of $\lambda$-contractive sets and almost-invariant sets for switched linear systems. The convexity-preserving property of switched linear systems allows us to conduct contraction analysis on the computed set and derive a probabilistic contraction property. In the spirit of non-convex scenario optimization, we also establish a chance-constrained guarantee on set invariance. In this paper, we study the problem of stabilizing switched linear systems when only limited information about the state and the mode of the system is available, which occurs in many applications involving networked switched systems (such as cyber-physical systems, IoT, etc.). First, we show that switched linear systems with arbitrary switching, i.e., with no constraint on the switching signal, are in general not stabilizable with a finite data rate. Then, drawing on this result, we restrict our attention to systems satisfying a fairly mild slow-switching assumption, in the sense that the switching signal has an average dwell time bounded away from zero. We show that under this assumption, switched linear systems that are stabilizable in the classical sense remain stabilizable with a finite data rate. A practical coder-controller that stabilizes the system is presented and its applicability is demonstrated on numerical examples.

In this paper, we analyse the impact of delayed event detection on the stability of a 2-mode planar hybrid automata. We consider hybrid automata with a unique equilibrium point for all the modes, and we find the maximum delay that preserves stability of that equilibrium point. We also show for the class of hybrid automata treated that the instability of the equilibrium point for the equivalent hybrid automaton with delay in the transitions is equivalent to the existence of a closed orbit in the hybrid state space, a result that is inspired by the Joint Spectral Radius theorem. This leads to an algorithm for computing the maximum stable delay exactly. 137. A DFT Investigation of the Electronic and Optical Properties of Pentadiamond

Recently, a new carbon 3D carbon allotrope named pentadiamond was proposed. Pentadiamond is composed of carbon atoms in mixed sp$^2$ and sp$^3$-like hybridization. In this work, we have carried out a detailed investigation of the electronic and optical properties of pentadiamond structure using first-principles (DFT) methods. Our results show that pentadiamond has an indirect bandgap semiconductor of $2.50$ eV with GGA-PBE and $3.31$ eV with HSE06. Its static dielectric constant is $4.70$ and the static refractive index is $2.16$. Pentadiamond presents low reflectivity, almost 40$\%$, for all-optical spectrum, making it a good structure to be used as a UV collector. Also, pentadiamond exhibits optical activity in the UV range where other carbon allotropes, such as diamond and 8-tetra(2,2) tubulane show no activity.

Recently, it was experimentally shown that the performance and thermal stability of the perovskite MAPbI$_3$ were improved upon the adsorption of a molecular layer of caffeine. In this work, we used a hybrid methodology that combines Uncoupled Monte Carlo (UMC) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations to carry out a detailed and comprehensive study of the adsorption mechanism of a caffeine molecule on the surface of MAPbI$_3$. Our results showed that the adsorption distance and energy of a caffeine molecule on the MAPbI$_3$ surface are 2.0 \r{A} and -0.3 eV, respectively. The caffeine/MAPbI$_3$ complex presents a direct bandgap of 2.38 eV with two flat intragap bands distanced 1.15 and 2.18 eV from the top of valence bands. Although the energy band levels are not significantly shifted by the presence of caffeine, the interaction MAPbI$_3$/perovskite is enough to affect the bands' dispersion, particularly the conduction bands., Comment: 12 pages and 6 figures

Free-standing monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) is a pure carbon structure composed of randomly distributed atom rings with different sizes, which was recently synthesized. In this work, we carried out ab initio and tight-binding calculations to investigate the optoelectronic properties of MAC and its derived nanotube and nanoscroll configurations. Our results show MAC, tube, and scrolls exhibit similar electronic behavior. All structures absorb from infrared to ultraviolet, with maximum absorption peaks the visible-ultra violet ($\sim 3.2$ eV). The maximum and minimum reflectivity values are in the range 0.3-0.5 (infrared) and 0.1-0.0 (ultraviolet), making these materials good candidates to ultraviolet filters.

Particle filtering is a powerful tool for target tracking. When the budget for observations is restricted, it is necessary to reduce the measurements to a limited amount of samples carefully selected. A discrete stochastic nonlinear dynamical system is studied over a finite time horizon. The problem of selecting the optimal measurement times for particle filtering is formalized as a combinatorial optimization problem. We propose an approximated solution based on the nesting of a genetic algorithm, a Monte Carlo algorithm and a particle filter. Firstly, an example demonstrates that the genetic algorithm outperforms a random trial optimization. Then, the interest of non-regular measurements versus measurements performed at regular time intervals is illustrated and the efficiency of our proposed solution is quantified: better filtering performances are obtained in 87.5% of the cases and on average, the relative improvement is 27.7%., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figues, conference paper

We propose a new 2D semiconductor material (TTA-2D) based on the molecular structure of Thiophene-Tetrathia-Annulene (TTA). The TTA-2D structural, electronic, and optical properties were investigated using \textit{ab initio} methods. Our results show that TTA-2D is a small indirect bandgap semiconductor ($0.6$ eV). A semiconductor-metal transition can be induced by applying a uniaxial strain. Our results also show that TTA-2D is thermally stable up to $T=1000$ K. TTA-2D absorbs in a large spectral range, from infrared to ultraviolet regions. Values of refractive index and reflectivity show that TTA-2D reflects only $10\%$ of the incident light in the visible region. Since graphene was synthesized the interest for building new 2D and 3D structures based on the carbon allotropes has been growing every day. One of these 3D structures is know as carbon schwarzites. Schwarzites consist of carbon nanostructures possessing the shape of Triply-Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS), which is characterized by a negative Gaussian curvature introduced by the presence of carbon rings with more than six atoms. Some examples of schwarzite families include: primitive (P), gyroid (G) and diamond (D). Previous studies considering different element species of schwarzites have investigated the mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. In this work, we investigated the stability of germanium (Ge) schwarzites using density functional theory with GGA exchange-correlation functional. We chose one structure of each family (P8bal), (G688) and (D688). It was observed that regions usually flat in carbon schwarzites acquires buckled configurations as previously observed on silicene and germanene monolayers. The investigated structures presented a semiconducting bandgap ranging from $0.13$ to $0.27$ eV. We also performed calculations of optical properties within the linear regime, where it was shown that Ge schwarzites structures absorb light from infrared to ultra-violet frequencies. Recently (C.-T. Toh et al., Nature 577, 199 (2020)), the first synthesis of free-standing monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) was achieved. MAC is a pure carbon structure composed of five, six, seven and eight atom rings randomly distributed. MAC proved to be surprisingly stable and highly fracture resistant. Its electronic properties are similar to boron nitride. In this work, we have investigated the mechanical properties and thermal stability of MAC models using fully-atomistic reactive molecular dynamics simulations. For comparison purposes, the results are contrasted against pristine graphene (PG) models of similar dimensions. Our results show that MAC and PG exhibit distinct mechanical behavior and fracture dynamics patterns. While PG after a critical strain threshold goes directly from elastic to brittle regimes, MAC shows different elastic stages between these two regimes. Remarkably, MAC is thermally stable up to 3600 K, which is close to the PG melting point. We show that H\"older continuity of the gradient is not only a sufficient condition, but also a necessary condition for the existence of a global upper bound on the error of the first-order Taylor approximation. We also relate this global upper bound to the H\"older constant of the gradient. This relation is expressed as an interval, depending on the H\"older constant, in which the error of the first-order Taylor approximation is guaranteed to be. We show that, for the Lipschitz continuous case, the interval cannot be reduced. An application to the norms of quadratic forms is proposed, which allows us to derive a novel characterization of Euclidean norms.

Study region: The Congo River basin (CRB), the world's second-largest river system, is subject to extreme hydrological events that strongly impact its ecosystems and population. Study focus: Here we present an improved 40-year (1981–2020) hydrological reanalysis of daily CRB discharge and analyze the spatiotemporal dynamics of recent major CRB floods and droughts, and their teleconnection with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the dominant driver of tropical precipitation. We employ a large-scale hydrologic-hydrodynamic model (MGB) with lake storage dynamics representation and a data assimilation (DA) technique using in-situ and remote sensing observations. New Hydrological Insights: The MGB model demonstrates satisfactory performance, with Kling-Gupta efficiency metric of 0.84 and 0.71 for calibration and validation, respectively. Incorporating lake representation substantially enhances simulations, increasing the Pearson correlation coefficient from 0.3 to 0.63. Additionally, DA yields a ∼13% reduction in discharge errors via cross-validation. We find that the 1997–1998 flood impacting the south and central CRB is statistically linked to a major El Niño event during that period. However, no such association is found for the 2019–2020 flood. Severe droughts in 1983–1984 and 2011–2012, affecting northern and southern CRB respectively, exhibit strong correlation with preceding El Niño and La Niña events, with a ∼10–12 months lag. This study advances understanding of the intricate interplay between spatiotemporal hydrological variability in CRB and large-scale climate phenomena like ENSO.

Extreme precipitation has been threatening many sectors of human society and is likely to intensify with global warming. In the present study, we have analysed the impact of future climate change on daily mean rainfall and heavy rainfall on seasonal and annual scales in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by using ten long-term runs of high-resolution regional climate models. We initially assessed the performance of each run and the multi-model ensemble mean in simulating the daily mean rainfall (PRE), the maximum one-day rainfall (Rx1day), the simple rainfall intensity index (SDII), the count of days when rainfall is greater than or equal to 20 mm (RR20mm), the total rainfall when the daily rainfall exceeds the 95th percentile of the wet-day rainfall (R95p) and the maximum number of consecutive days with more than or equal to 1 mm (CWD). Next, we examined the future changes of these indices, focusing on the multi-model ensemble mean and spread under the high emission scenario RCP8.5. The time frames considered are the mid and end of the twenty-first century (2035–2065 and 2070–2100, respectively). The results indicate that the performance of REMO2015-MPI-ESM was close to the multi-model ensemble mean in representing the mean rainfall and most heavy rainfall indices, while CanRCM4-CamESM2 was identified as the worst performing model. The key finding of this study is that the multi-model ensemble mean project no significant change regarding the daily mean rainfall throughout the year and across all seasons by the middle of the 21st century, except of the western region of the country where a decrease is projected. Simultaneously, Rx1day, SDII, RR20mm, and R95p are projected to decrease almost everywhere during all seasons. Moreover, a consistent decrease in the number of wet days is projected. Focusing on the end of the century, the multi-model ensemble mean project an overall decrease in daily mean rainfall, especially in the western region of the DRC, with a more pronounced effect during MAM. The increase in Rx1day, SDII, RR20mm, and R95p, along with a decrease in CWD, is amplified in this period. These findings are useful for predicting the potential threats of precipitation-related diseases and natural hazards, as well as for designing climate-resilient infrastructure and socioeconomic activities in the DRC.

These non-convex constraints include semialgebraic sets and other smooth constraints with Lipschitz gradient. With these quadratic relaxations, a sufficient condition for set invariance is derived and it can be formulated as a set of linear matrix inequalities. Based on the sufficient condition, a new algorithm is presented with finite-time convergence to the actual maximal invariant set under mild assumptions. This algorithm can be also extended to switched linear systems and some special nonlinear systems.
