Abstract

Trade facilitation achieved through harmonization of private law governing international trade is well recognized. The CISG, albeit being a hall mark of a successful harmonization attracted a limited interest from the Portuguese speaking (Lusophone) countries except Brazil. In the light of China’s trading interest with the Lusophone Countries, the question of relevance of the CISG to promote Sino-Lusophone trade gains significance. To address the above question, this paper seeks to examine the scope and limitations of the CISG application to China and Brazil and adopts a case law method to examine the jurisprudence resulting from judicial interpretations and arbitration awards. The paper examines the reception of the CISG in both countries, before enquiring the significance of the CISG in facilitating their bilateral trade. The paper briefly refers to the implications arising from the lack of formal extension of the CISG by China to Macau SAR, which has been designated as a jurisdiction to facilitate trade between China and Lusophone Countries. In conclusion, the paper underscores the importance of the CISG based on the findings of its scope of application in China and Brazil and calls for the need to study the phenomenon further in the light of the experience of post Brazilian accession to the CISG.&nbsp

Abstract

Objective—To characterize the in vitro response of equine cecal longitudinal smooth muscle (CLSM) to endothelin (ET)-1 and assess the role of ETA and ETB receptors in those ET-1–induced responses. Animals—36 horses without gastrointestinal tract disease. Procedure—To determine cumulative concentrationresponse relationships, CLSM strips were suspended in tissue baths containing graded concentrations of ET-1 (10–9 to 10–6M) with or without BQ-123 (ETA receptor antagonist); with or without IRL-1038 (ETB receptor antagonist); or with both antagonists at concentrations of 10–9, 10–7, and 10–5M. To determine the percentage change in baseline tension of CLSM, the areas under the curve during the 3-minute periods before and after addition of each dose were compared . Also, the effects of ET-1 and a combination of selective ETA and ETB receptor antagonists on electrically evoked contractions were studied. Results—ET-1 caused sustained increases in CLSM tension in a concentration-dependent manner. Contractile responses to ET-1 were not significantly inhibited by either BQ-123 or IRL-1038 alone at any concentration; however, responses were significantly inhibited by exposure to the antagonists together at a concentration of 10–5M. Electrical field stimulation did not change the spontaneous contractile activity of CLSM and did not significantly alter the tissue response to ET-1, BQ-123, or IRL-1038. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Results indicated that ET-1 has a contractile effect on equine CLSM that is mediated via ETA and ETB receptors. In vitro spontaneous contractions of equine CLSM apparently originate in the smooth muscle and not the enteric nervous system. (Am J Vet Res 2005;66:1202–1208)

Abstract

The paper develops a new topology for a three phase multilevel inverter with a view to reduce the number of switches in the path of the current. It encompasses a mechanism to reach the desired target voltage and in turn enable the three phase induction motor to operate at the specified speed. The formulation incorporates the theory of an appropriate pulse width modulation strategy to ensure the elimination of higher frequency components of the output voltage. The use of relatively smaller number of carriers in the process of generating the switching pulses serves to enhance the output voltage spectrum. The intriguing merits of the phase disposition over the other modulation schemes enable to arrive at a nearly sinusoidal voltage. The performance obtained from the prototype substantiate the MATLAB based simulation results and establish the ability of the series parallel switched multilevel inverter topology to offer an improved performance for the induction motor. Abstract

International audience; BACKGROUND: A fixed-dose regimen of rivaroxaban, an oral factor Xa inhibitor, has been shown to be as effective as standard anticoagulant therapy for the treatment of deep-vein thrombosis, without the need for laboratory monitoring. This approach may also simplify the treatment of pulmonary embolism. METHODS: In a randomized, open-label, event-driven, noninferiority trial involving 4832 patients who had acute symptomatic pulmonary embolism with or without deep-vein thrombosis, we compared rivaroxaban (15 mg twice daily for 3 weeks, followed by 20 mg once daily) with standard therapy with enoxaparin followed by an adjusted-dose vitamin K antagonist for 3, 6, or 12 months. The primary efficacy outcome was symptomatic recurrent venous thromboembolism. The principal safety outcome was major or clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding. RESULTS: Rivaroxaban was noninferior to standard therapy (noninferiority margin, 2.0; P=0.003) for the primary efficacy outcome, with 50 events in the rivaroxaban group (2.1%) versus 44 events in the standard-therapy group (1.8%) (hazard ratio, 1.12; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.75 to 1.68). The principal safety outcome occurred in 10.3% of patients in the rivaroxaban group and 11.4% of those in the standard-therapy group (hazard ratio, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.76 to 1.07; P=0.23). Major bleeding was observed in 26 patients (1.1%) in the rivaroxaban group and 52 patients (2.2%) in the standard-therapy group (hazard ratio, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.31 to 0.79; P=0.003). Rates of other adverse events were similar in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: A fixed-dose regimen of rivaroxaban alone was noninferior to standard therapy for the initial and long-term treatment of pulmonary embolism and had a potentially improved benefit-risk profile.
