This research makes use of Research and Development method in which a teaching model is developed to teaching grammar in the form of multiple-choice questions. It is Cohort-based Grammar Teaching Model that is developed. In the development of this teaching model, fifty students took part in. The research was conducted at Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Manajemen Sukma Medan on jalan Sakti Lubis no. 80. To figure out what teaching model which the students need, questionaire was disseminated. In analyzing the available data from the instrument, questionaire inspired by Guttman Scale was made with numerous modifications in statements and questions.The analysis reveals that the participants require an intersting and fun grammar teaching model; easy to understand and more efective; quick problem-solving, time-saving and target-oriented. Due to this reason, eventually, Cohort-based Grammar Teaching Model is not mediocrewhere it is capable of alternating grammar problem for multiple-choice question in structure part of the TOEFL in a relative instant high result way.Keywords: Research and Development, Teaching Grammar, Multiple-choice question, Cohort

The objectives of this study were to classify the types of translation techniques used in translating the captions of Ani Yudhoyono’s Instagram, to describe how the techniques are used in translating the captions of AniYudhoyono’sInstagram, and to find out the reason of using the technique in translating the captions of AniYudhoyono’s Instagram. The data were 226 captions (words and sentences) collected weekly written by Ani Yudhoyono in her Instagram account in. This research applied Qualitative Research design. The data were collected through reading and analyzing the source language and her translation in the target language. Another five was not exist. It was happen because there were some captions that were not able translated by applying those techniques in order to keep the sense of language itself.The most dominant technique used was Literal technique consisting of 54 data. In another word, it has 23.89% of the frequency, Compensation with 25 data (11.06%), Modulation with 19 data (8.40%), Transposition with 18 data (7.96%), Borrowing with 16 data (7.07%), Calque with 16 data (7.07%), Adaptation with 15 data (6.63%), Description with 14 data (6.19%), Reduction with 14 data (6.19%), Linguistic compression with 12 data (5.30%), Amplification with 11 data (4.86%), Particularization with 5 data (2.21%), and Generalization with 4 data (1.76%). While in the double techniques, the translator used Borrowing+Transposition with 1 data (0.44%), Calque+Amplification with 1 data (0.44%) and the last is Transposition+Calque with 1 data (0.44%).In this study, the translator doesn’t only apply single technique in a sentence (caption), but she also applied double technique in five of the data.Keywords: Translation Technique, Instagram, Molina and Albir, Caption, Bilingual

The research deals with the occurrence of shift in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia . The objectives of the study were: (1) to find out the types of shifts in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia , (2) to describe how the shifts occur in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia , (3) to analyze the reasons why translation shifts occur Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia . The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were clauses which translated from Gayonese into Indonesian. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model. This research was found that there were five types of translation shift. The type of structure shift was the dominant type. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) The category shifts in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia are 1) structure shift, 2) class shift, 3) unit shift, 4) reduplication word shift, and 5) double types of shift. (2) There were some ways of translation shift used in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia , namely grammatical change occurred, change in different word class and change in ranks. (3) There were four reasons of using translation shifts are (1) Different language systems, (2) Grammatical structures of SL do not exist in TL, (3) Literal translation is grammatically possible but may not accord with natural usage in the TL (naturalness between SL and TL) and (4) replacing virtual gap by grammatical structure. The objective of this study was to find out whether using Famous People Model in writing descriptive can improve students’ achievement in writing descritive text. It was conducted by using experimental research. The population of consisted of 4 classes. Two classes were taken as the sample by using random sampling technique. The class X-1 was as experimental group and X-2 was as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using Famous People Model, otherwise control group was taught by using conventional technique. The instrument for collecting data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result shows that Famous People Model has a significant effect on students achievement in writing descriptive text. The result shows that the t-observed is higher than t-table (3.102 > 2.024 (α-0.05)) with the degree of freedom (n) = 20. Therefore,Famous People Model significantly affects on the students’ ability in writing descriptive text.

The study deals with the developing interactive media for senior high school students. The objective of this study is to find out how to develop interactive media for better speaking skill of senior high school students. The research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this research was 2016/2017 students of the eleventh grade of Class XI IPA4 in SMAN 1 Batang Kuis. The number of the students was 30 students. The data of this study was collected by using need analysis questionnaire and experts’ judgment. Need analysis questionnaire was calculated by using percentage to get the information of students’ need before developing interactive media. Experts’ judgment was calculated by using likert data, mean and criteria interval of expert judgment to know the validity of interactive media which has been developed. After the data analyzed, it was found that the experts’ judgment result was 4.80 which had a very good criteria interval. This study aimed at investigating types of politeness strategies used by an English teacher in the classroom, and to describe the reasons politeness strategies realized by English teacher in the classroom. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative research. The source of the data was an English teacher of class VIII in MTs Swasta Al-Jihad Medan. The researcher used random sampling technique. The instruments of this study were interview and video recording. The data were analyzed using data descriptive. The findings of the result were that: (1) There were three of politeness strategies, namely: Bald on Record (38.1%), Positive Politeness (33.33%), and Negative Politeness (28.57%) and Off Record (0%). (2) Bald on Record was realized because it made close relationship between teacher and students, Positive Politeness was realized because to give respect to the students during teaching learning process, Negative Politeness was realized to maintain closer friend among them, and Off Record never realized by English teacher during teaching learning process. The objective of this study is to find out what the English listening materials are appropriate for students in tourism major. Indonesia has many spots for tourism then it makes government to improve the students’ ability in tourism major. Since the students need to communicate with other people especially tourist then it needs to improve listening skill. Because basically listening is a skill of English that consists of receiving, constructing, and responding to verbal or nonverbal massage. In fact, the finding of materials that provided for the Grade X students of Tourism major at SMK Negeri 7 Medan that listening materials provided in the textbook are not related to the students’ major. Then it is needed to develop the English listening materials for the tenth grade of tourism major. The research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) method. The subject of this research was 2016/2017 students of the tenth grade of tourism major in SMK Negeri 7 Medan. The number of the students was 26 students. The data of this study were collected by using need analysis questionnaire, and interview. It was found that 61.90% of the respondents assumed that existing listening materials are not related to their major, and 93.75% expected major-related English listening materials. The experts’ validation shows that the developed listening materials are appropriate and recommended to be used. At the end of this study, teachers are expected to be able to see the students’ needs and can prepare even develop the materials in order to meet students’ needs and job. This qualitative study was aimed at investigating the kinds of question which were raised by an English teacher with respect to cognitive level in the classroom. The data were obtained by an audio-recording and the transcription of the teacher’s questions in meeting of English subject. The English teacher and his forty students were involved as the participant in the classroom interaction. The kinds of question were identified by using Revised Bloom Taxonomy’s Theory proposed by Forehand (2005). The findings of this research show that the English teacher had applied his questions with respect to the five out of six from cognitive levels; they are Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, and Evaluating. As the result of analysis, the percentage of kinds of questions with respect to understanding level is 32%(8 questions). Then, the analyzing level is 28%(7 questions), the remembering level is 16% (4 questions), the applying level is 12%(3 questions), and the evaluating level is 12% (3 questions).Furthermore, the understanding level is the most raised by the English teacher which means that the level explicitly explains that the questions used by the teacher are still categorized to the basic skill. In relation to that, it is concluded that the level indicated that all the teacher’s questions transcribed with respect to the five of cognitive levels do not fulfill as category in organizing the questions well in classroom interaction. And the level would only aim to elicit factual answers, recognize information from interpreting the meaning and check student’s comprehension. This qualitative study is aimed to find the Realization of Experiential Fuction of National Anthem of Indonesia. It was conducted by applying documentary study. The data analysis for this research was the text of National Anthem of Indonesia. The data were collected by applying a documentary technique. The document was read and analyzed to find out the Experiential Function. The data were analyzed by some procedures: data condensation, data display and drawing conclusion. Every elements of experintial function in the song or National Anthem represents the purpose of the song because the experiential function functions to represent the experience. The researcher also found there are so many ellipsis word in the song. Where that element can be found or detected from the context. Ellipsis means what is something left of linguistic elements. The aims of this study were to find out the types of translation procedures in the translation of Quick Reference of Compaq Notebook PC from English into Indonesian, and to describe the ways of proceduer translated in contextual situation from English into Indonesian. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were word,phrase,clouse and sentence that were translated from English into Indonesian on a book of “Quick Reference of Compaq Notebook PC as the source of data. Besides that, the data was analyzed by using translation procedure based on (Newmark,1988) which used to answer the questions number one and two to find the types and ways of translation procedure were used in Quick Reference of Compaq Notebook PC.The results of this study were found that there were eleven types of translation procedure used in translation of Quick Reference of Compaq Notebook PC namely transference, naturalization, culture equivalent, functional equivalent, synonymy, through translation, shift or transposition, modulation, recognised equivalent,componential analysis and reduction and expansion.The context of Translation procedure used in Quick Reference of Compaq Notebook PC were context situation based Halliday (1987) which used to answer the question number three.It consists of field,tenor and mode. The Objectives of this paper are to describe the types of language styles used by male and female teachers in teaching English in the classroom, the realization of those language styles and the reason of the using of them. The study was conducted by using qualitative descriptive research designs.The subjects were four English teachers of SMP Negeri 2 Pancurbatu, namely two male and two female teachers. Based on the data analysis showed that the dominant language styles used by male and female teachers’ utterances in teaching English in the classroom is formal style. Female teachers use formal style more than male teachers do (58,8% : 18,2%). It is found that there is another style, which is called as mix style used by female teacher (8.8%).The language styles of the male and female teachers were different in their realization. The realization of those language styles occured by the way of communication of each teacher. The ways of male teachers in communicating are giving advice, information, conflict, status, and order, while the female teachers communicating are understanding, feeling, support, proposal and order which should be categorized for male. Order also became the dominant realization of way of communication for female teachers. For male teachers, the highly way of communicating is order which is 13 utterances or equal with 38.2% and for female teachers is order with 10 utterances or 29.4%. Based on the research problem, it showed that there are four language style used by male and female teachers, they were slang, colloquial, informal and formal, and the mix style only for female teacher. Independency couldn’t be found for male’s way of communication whereas for female teachers, compromise and intimacy couldn’t be found. There were two factors as the reasons for male and female English teachers to used the languqge styles, namely internal and external factors. The various language styles used by male and female teachers in order to teach the students to be able to comprehend English as their foreign language,through many kinds of way of communication, eventhough there are many internal and external factors disturbed the teaching learning process in the classroom

This study addresses analysis of Speech Function in Onang – onang. The main objectives of this study are to investigate the kinds and the realization of Speech Function in Onang – onang and the reason for their realization. This study is based on descriptive qualitative approch. The data are collected by applying documentary technique. The result of this study reveals that there are three kinds of Speech Function that mostly appear in Onang – onang, which are Statement, command and offer. It also reveales that the process of realization of Speech Function in Onang – onang in Mood is realized both congruent and metaphorically. The reasons for realization of Speech Function in Onang- onang are power initiation, Politeness need and also there are different language systems and grammatical structures between North Padang Lawas language and English clause structure.

The research dealt with speech functions. The objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate the types of speech functions made by male and female lecturers in the classroom interactions (2) to describe how the speech functions realized in mood (3) to elaborate the reason why the speech functions realized in mood as the way they are. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) the types of speech functions that have been found in male and female lecturers in the classroom are statement, question, command, offer, and minor. Which is the statement is more often used by male lecturer in the classroom interactions, then it is followed by question, command, offer and minor. While, the question is more often used by female lecturer in the classroom interactions, then it is followed by statement, command, offer and minor. (2) For the realization of speech functions of male and female lecturers, there are two ways that have been found in realization of speech functions of male and female lecturers in mood, namely, typical clause mood (congruent), and non-typical clause mood (incongruent or metaphor). In typical clause mood, there are four ways that have been found, namely statement that realized in declarative mood, then, command that realized in imperative mood, after that question that realized in interrogative mood and minor that realized in minor. Besides that, in non-typical clause mood, for male lecturer it just found three ways in realization of speech function in mood, namely statement is realized by interrogative, then command is realized by declarative and offer is realized by declarative. While for female lecturer it found four ways in realization of speech function in mood, namely question is realized by declarative, then statement is realized by interrogative, command is realized by declarative and offer is realized by declarative. (3) For the reason in realization of speech function of male and female lecturers in the classroom interactions, in this study, the researcher found because of situational context that is tenor. It occurs because the priority of the lecturers’ role giving information to the students in formal situation. The power is unequal power. The intensity of contact is relatively frequent contact. The affective involvement is still low. And the lecturers have become accustomed with a talkative method. Therefore in this study of speech functions of male and female lecturers in the classroom interactions, they have different ways into applying the language especially when doing interaction with their students. Which is they have their own ways in doing interaction with the student, even though they have different ways but their aim juts making the student comprehend and can know what the lecturer said is.

Buah salak merupakan buah komoditi khas Indonesia, buah ini terdiri dari beberapa varietas, salah satu varietas buah salak adalah salak sidimpuan (Salacca sumatrana). Salak jenis ini memiliki keunikan yaitu dari bentuk, aroma dan rasa. Salah satu upaya yang dapat dilakukan saat produksi berlebih adalah melakukan diversifikasi olahan pangan, yaitu penepungan. Penepungan dilakukan perlakuan perendamam serta ketebalan irisan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk menguji karakteristik tepung salak. Proses penelitian ini meliputi pengupasan kulit, pemisahan daging buah dengan biji, pengirisan dengan ketebalan (2 mm, 4 mm, dan 6 mm) dan perendaman dengan natrium metabisulfit konsentrasi 1.5 gr selama 10 menit, perendaman dengan air serta kontrol (tanpa perendaman). Buah salak memiliki kadar air sebesar 78%. Pengeringan buah salak menggunakan oven (suhu 55°C). Tepung salak yang memiliki kadar air tertinggi 11.945% pada perlakuan kontrol (tanpa perendaman) ketebalan irisan 6 mm. Tepung salak yang memiliki kadar vitamin C tertinggi 0.0585% pada perlakuan kontrol (tanpa perendaman) ketebalan irisan 2 mm. Tepung salak yang memiliki persentase kehalusan tepung tertinggi 27.745% pada perlakuan kontrol (tanpa perendaman) ketebalan irisan 2 mm. Tepung salak yang memiliki Bulk density tertinggi 0.701 gr/ml pada perlakuan perendaman natrium metabisulfit ketebalan irisan 4 mm. Tepung salak yang memiliki hue tertinggi 57.9° pada perlakuan perendaman natrium metabisulfit ketebalan irisan 2 mm.

The aim of this research was to find out the ability of the first year students in speaking by using storytelling at MAS. Al-Jam’iyatul Wasliyah. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was 20 students of XC class in the first grade at MAS. Al-Jam’iyatul Wasliyah. In selecting the sample the writer used random sampling technique. The total number of the sample was 12 students. The data was collected by using oral test. The researcher only measured the ability of students’ speaking in storytelling by considering five components of speaking: (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension). And their speaking had been recorded by using phone recorder. From the result of analyzing the data, the researcher found that the students’ speaking ability by using storytelling was moderate. It proved by the fact that 4 students (33.33%) classified as high ability, 4 students (33.33%) classified as moderate ability, and 4 students (33.33%) classified as low ability. Based on the data, the students’ score were bigger in the high and moderate level than in the low ability level. Based on the research finding, the English teacher is suggested to consider the five components in scoring speaking ability (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension). The students are suggested to do more practice in pronunciation and fluency, because they dominantly speak incorrect pronunciation and have pauses in the sentences. Students are also suggested to enrich their vocabulary by using storytelling.

This study aimed at analyzing the cognitive dimension based on Revised BloomTaxonomy in reading questions in Look Ahead an English Course for Senior HighSchool Level 1, 2, & 3. This study used quantitative research design. The sampleswere 141 reading questions which taken by using random sampling technique byusing Statistical Program for Social Science (SPSS) version 20.0. in Look Aheadan English Course for Senior High School Level 1, 2, & 3. The data were analyzedby using Table analysis of cognitive dimension of Revised Bloom Taxonomy. Theanalysis showed that the most dominant cognitive dimension of Revised BloomTaxonomy in remembering dimension (57.45%). The second dominant cognitivedimension is understanding dimension (26.24%). The third dominant cognitivedimension is evaluating dimension (10.64%). The fourth dominant cognitivedimension is creating dimension (3.55%). The fifth dominant cognitive dimension isanalyzing dimension (2.13%). There was no cognitive dimension of applyingdimension that applied in reading question of the textbooks.

This study deals with The Effect of Mind Mapping Technique on Students’ Achievement in Writing Narrative Text at SMAN 4 Medan. The objective of this study was to find out if there was a significant effect of mind mapping technique on students’ achievement in writing narrative text. It was conducted by using experimental research. The population of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Medan which consists of six parallel classes. Two classes were taken as the sample of the research, XI-1 IPA and XI-5 IPA. The class XI-1 IPA was an experimental group and class XI-5 IPA was a control group. The experimental group was taught by Mind Mapping Technique, otherwise the control group was taught by using lecturing technique or without used Mind Mapping Technique. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. It was found that t-observed (5.63) higher than t-table (2.00). It means that there was a significant effect on students’ achievement in writing narrative text at SMAN 4 Medan by using mind mapping technique.

This study deals with Javanese language shift in Balee Village, North Aceh. It aims to find out the factors of Javanese language shift into Acehnese language in Balee Village, North Aceh, the pattern of Javanese language shift and the reasons of Javanese language shift in Balee Village, North Aceh. The data were obtained from the family of Javanese living in Balee Village, North Aceh. The study employs qualitative research design with a single case study to get the understanding on this study. The subjects of this study were 10 families. The subjects were divided into two groups, namely parents and children. The findings showed that the shift of Javanese into Acehnese Language in Balee village, North Aceh was influenced by bilingualism, migration, economy, society, demography, institution, and attitudes. The Javanese language shift to Acehnese language occurred in the pattern of relationship between parents and children and among children. The shifts of Javanese to the Acehnese are mostly caused by social conflict. Keywords: language shift, Javanese, social conflict

This qualitative research deals with a study on the lexical loss, which is aimed at (1) investigating the level of agricultural lexical loss, (2) describing the patterns of agricultural lexical loss, (3) explaining the reasons of agricultural lexical loss in Cakap Karo . This research has drawn the following conclusions. Firstly, the level of agricultural lexical loss of Cakap Karo among hard plants, plants for food, herbs plant and kinds of flower categories were occured in fourth level (not know and not use) which had different percentages. The highest level of agricultural lexical loss in Cakap Karo occurred in kinds of flower category and the lowest level occurred in plants for food category. Secondly, the agricultural lexical loss was proportionally patterned into potential and total lexical loss. There were 103 (one hundred and three) potential agricultural lexical loss and 146 (one hundred forty six) total agricultural lexical loss. This research deals with the effect of using video on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. The population of this research was the students of VIII SMP of SMP Negeri 4 Stabat in Academic Year 2016 / 2017. This research was conducted with two randomized groups namely experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using video and the control group was taught without using video. The researcher collected the data by giving essay test in the written test form. In order to know the reliability of the test, the researcher used inter-rater formula. The result of the reliability was 0.73. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the mean scores of the students in the experimental group was significantly higher than the mean scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant α= 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58 with tobserved value 8.871 > ttable value 2.000. Therefore, null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The finding indicated that video significantly affected the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.

This paper is the result of first phase of the research about the development of students’ mathematical understanding and representation ability through Joyful Problem-based Learning (JPBL) at Public Junior High School in North Sumatera, Indonesia. The population is all of the students of public junior high school (PJHS) in North Sumatera. Samples choose based on stratified random sampling. The samples are the students of PJHS 27 Medan, PJHS 1 Percut Sei Tuan, PJHS 1 Tebing Tinggi, and PJHS 2 Pematangsiantar. The techniques used for collecting data is observation, interview, and essay test. The research findings: (1) Based on interview and observation found that conventional approach still use in all of the class of PJHS; The students engagement in learning activity is very low as well as students self-regulated learning; Most of the students do not attain minimal mastery achievement, (2) Based on essay test found that achievement of the students in mathematical understanding and representation test is categories low.Keywords: mathematical understanding, mathematical representation, joyful problem-based learning DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.7.1.2816.43-56

This study was focused on the investigation of the effect of using Science Fictionmovie on students’ achievement in writing recount text. This study discovered theeffect of using English movie on students’ achievement in writing recount text. Itwas conducted by using experimental research design. The population of thisresearch was grade X students of SMA Negeri 1 Stabat divided into two groups,namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught byusing English movie, while the control group was taught by using lecturingmethod (without movie). The instruments used to collect the data was writingrecount text. After the data were analyzed, it was found that the value of tobservedwas 4. 367 with the degree of freedom (df)= 68 at the level ofsignificance 0,05. It means that t-observed was higher than t-table (4. 367>1.994). The result of this study showed that teaching recount text by using Englishmovie was higher than that by using lecturing method (without using Englishmovie). It implies that English movie is appropriate to be applied for writingrecount text.

This study was aimed at finding out the effect of concept circle strategy on the students' vocabulary achievement in reading descriptive text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this study was the students of SMP Panca Budi Medan, Academic Year 2015/2016. This study was conducted with two randomized groups namely experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using Concept Circle Strategy while the control group was taught by using Frayer Model Strategy. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the mean scores of the students in the experimental group was significantly higher than the mean scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant α= 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 50 with t-observed value 3.13> t-table value 2.009. Therefore, null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The findings indicated that using Concept Circle Strategysignificantly affected the students’ vocabulary achievement in reading descriptive text.

This study aims at discovering the effect of using videos on students achievement in writing procedure text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was grade XI students of SMA Swasta Sinar Harapan Lubuk Pakam with 70 Students as samples who were divided into two groups, namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using Videos, while the control group was taught by using without Videos. The instrument used to collect the data was by asking the students to write a procedure text. After analyzing the data, it was found that the value of t-observed was 4,79 with the degree of freedom (df)=68 at the level of significance 0,05. It means that t-observed was higher than t-table (4,79 > 2,00). The result of this study showed that teaching by using Videos was higher than that by using without Videos. It implies that video is appropriate to be applied for writing procedure text.

This study aims at investigating the effect of using SWELL Method on Students’ Achievement in Writing Procedure Text. This study was conducted by experimental research. The population of this study was the students of the third grade of SMP NEGERI 2 SELESAI. The total number of the population was one hundred twenty in 4 classes. There were sixty students chosen as the sample using randomly by lottery technique. The sample was divided into two groups, namely experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using SWELL Method and control group was taught by using Demonstration Method. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis shows that t-observed value is higher than t-table (2.26>2.00) at level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom 58. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Based on the findings of this study, it was found that there is a significant effect of SWELL Method on students’ achievement in writing procedure text.
