A semiconductor-based terahertz-detector strategy, exploiting a bound-to-bound-to-continuum architecture, is presented and investigated. In particular, a ladder of equidistant energy levels is employed, whose step is tuned to the desired detection frequency and allows for sequential multi-photon absorption. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that the proposed multi-subband scheme could represent a promising alternative to conventional quantum-well infrared photodetectors in the terahertz spectral region., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Applied Physics

We report on the catalog of Gamma--Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected with the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. It includes 1082 GRBs with 40--700 keV fluences in the range from $1.3\times 10^{-7}$ to $4.5\times 10^{-4}$ erg cm$^{-2}$, and with 40--700 keV peak fluxes from $3.7\times 10^{-8}$ to $7.0\times 10^{-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. Raman scattering measurements are used to follow the modification of the vibrational density of states in a reactive epoxy{amine mixture during isothermal polymerization. Combining with Brillouin light and inelastic x-ray scattering measurements, we analyze the variations of the boson peak and of the Debye level while the system passes from the uid to a glassy phase upon increasing the number of covalent bonds among the constituent molecules. We find that the shift and the intensity decrease of the boson peak are fully explained by the modification of the elastic medium throughout the reaction. Surprisingly, bond-induced modifications of the structure do not affect the relative excess of states over the Debye level.

During our Swift/XRT program to obtain X-ray positions at arcsecond level for a sample of Galactic X-ray binaries, we discovered that SAX J0840.7+2248 is not a binary, but rather BeppoSAX/WFC+GRBM X-ray Rich GRB 980429. Using a sample of 14 BeppoSAX and 74 Swift GRBs with measured redshift we tested the correlation between the intrinsic peak energy of the time-integrated spectrum, E_p,i, the isotropic-equivalent peak luminosity, L_p,iso, and the duration of the most intense parts of the GRB computed as T_0.45 ("Firmani correlation"). For 41 out of 88 GRBs we could estimate all of the three required properties. Apart from 980425, which appears to be a definite outlier and notoriously peculiar in many respects, we used 40 GRBs to fit the correlation with the maximum likelihood method discussed by D'Agostini, suitable to account for the extrinsic scatter in addition to the intrinsic uncertainties affecting every single GRB. We confirm the correlation. However, unlike the results by Firmani et al., we found that the correlation does have a logarithmic scatter comparable with that of the E_p,i-E_iso ("Amati") correlation. We also find that the slope of the product L_p,iso T_0.45 is equal to ~0.5, which is consistent with the hypothesis that the E_p,i-L_p,iso-T_0.45 correlation is equivalent to the E_p,i-E_iso correlation (slope ~0.5). We conclude that, based on presently available data, there is no clear evidence that the E_p,i-L_p,iso-T_0.45 correlation is different (both in terms of slope and dispersion) from the E_p,i-E_iso correlation., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, revised version submitted to MNRAS

We present a systematic theory of Coulomb-induced correlation effects in the nonlinear optical processes within the strong-coupling regime. In this paper we shall set a dynamics controlled truncation scheme \cite{Axt Stahl} microscopic treatment of nonlinear parametric processes in SMCs including the electromagnetic field quantization. It represents the starting point for the microscopic approach to quantum optics experiments in the strong coupling regime without any assumption on the quantum statistics of electronic excitations (excitons) involved. We exploit a previous technique, used in the semiclassical context, which, once applied to four-wave mixing in quantum wells, allowed to understand a wide range of observed phenomena \cite{Sham PRL95}. We end up with dynamical equations for exciton and photon operators which extend the usual semiclassical description of Coulomb interaction effects, in terms of a mean-field term plus a genuine non-instantaneous four-particle correlation, to quantum optical effects., Comment: preprint version, no figures an entire section added

Recently the possibility of generating nonclassical polariton states by means of parametric scattering has been demonstrated. Excitonic polaritons propagate in a complex interacting environment and contain real electronic excitations subject to scattering events and noise affecting quantum coherence and entanglement. Here we present a general theoretical framework for the realistic investigation of polariton quantum correlations in the presence of coherent and incoherent interaction processes. The proposed theoretical approach is based on the {\em nonequilibrium quantum Langevin approach for open systems} applied to interacting-electron complexes described within the dynamics controlled truncation scheme. It provides an easy recipe to calculate multi-time correlation functions which are key-quantities in quantum optics. From a sample of 32 GRBs with known redshift (Guidorzi et al. 2005) and then a sample of 551 BATSE GRBs with derived pseudo-redshift (Guidorzi 2005), the time variability/peak luminosity correlation (V vs. L) found by Reichart et al. (2001) was tested. For both samples the correlation is still found but less relevant due to a much higher spread of the data. Assuming a straight line in the logL-logV plane (logL = m logV + b), as done by Reichart et al., the slope was found lower than that derived by Reichart et al.: m = 1.3_{-0.4}^{+0.8} (Guidorzi et al. 2005), m = 0.85 +- 0.02 (Guidorzi 2005), to be compared with m = 3.3^{+1.1}_{-0.9} (Reichart et al. 2001). Reichart & Nysewander (2005) attribute the different slope to the fact we do not take into account in the fit the variance of the sample, and demonstrate that, using the method by Reichart (2001), the data set of Guidorzi et al. (2005) in logL-logV plane is still well described with slope m = 3.4^{+0.9}_{-0.6}. Here we compare the results of two methods accounting for the variance of the sample, that implemented by Reichart (2001) and that by D'Agostini (2005). We demonstrate that the method by Reichart (2001) provides an inconsistent estimate of the slope when the sample variance is comparable with the interval of values covered by the variability. We also show that, using the D'Agostini method, the slope is consistent with that derived by us earlier and inconsistent with that derived by Reichart & Nysewander (2005). Finally we discuss the implications on the interpretations and show that our results are in agreement with the peak energy/variability correlation found by Lloyd-Ronning & Ramirez-Ruiz (2002) and the peak energy/peak luminosity correlation (Yonetoku et al. 2004; Ghirlanda et al. 2005) [abridged]., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present modeling and simulation of prototypical multi bound state quantum well infrared photodetectors and show that such a detection design may overcome the problems arising when the operation frequency is pushed down into the far infrared spectral region. In particular, after a simplified analysis on a parabolic-potential design, we propose a fully three-dimensional model based on a finite difference solution of the Boltzmann transport equation for realistic potential profiles. We report new inelastic Raman and neutron scattering spectra for glasses with different degrees of fragility; the data are compared for each sample to obtain the Raman coupling function $C(\omega)$. The study indicates a general linear behaviour of the $C(\omega)$ near the Boson peak maximum, and evidence a correlation between vibrational and relaxational properties, already observed in recent publications.

We report test results of the correlation between time variability and peak luminosity of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), using a larger sample (32) of GRBs with known redshift than that available to Reichart et al. (2001), and using as variability measure that introduced by these authors. The results are puzzling. Assuming an isotropic-equivalent peak luminosity, as done by Reichart et al. (2001), a correlation is still found, but it is less relevant, and inconsistent with a power law as previously reported. Assuming as peak luminosity that corrected for GRB beaming for a subset of 16 GRBs with known beaming angle, the correlation becomes little less significant., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, MNRAS, accepted

We investigate the influence of environmental noise on polarization entangled light generated by parametric emission in a cavity. By adopting a recently developed separability criterion, we show that: i) self-stimulation may suppress the detrimental influence of noise on entanglement; ii) when self-stimulation becomes effective, a classical model of parametric emission incorporating noise provides the same results of quantum theory for the expectation values involved in the separability criterion. Moreover we show that, in the macroscopic limit, it is impossible to observe violations of local realism with measurements of $n$-particle correlations, whatever n but finite. These results provide an interesting example of the emergence of macroscopic local realism in the presence of strong entanglement even in the absence of decoherence., Comment: 1 figure

We propose a general theoretical scheme for the investigation of light emitted from nano- and micrometric structures of arbitrary shape and composition. More specifically, the proposed fully three-dimensional approach allows to derive the light-intensity distributions around the emitting structures and their modifications in the presence of nearby scattering objects. Our analysis allows to better identify the non-trivial relationship between near-field images and fluorescent objects.

We present a numerical simulation study of the density-dependence (rho = 2.2 - 4.0 g/cm^3) of the high-energy collective dynamics in vitreous silica at mesoscopic wavevectors (Q = 1 - 18 nm^-1). The density-dependence of the longitudinal and transverse current spectra provides evidence that the excess modes observed in the density of states of this and many other glasses, i.e. the Boson Peak, arises from the high-Q limit of the quasi-transverse acoustic branch. This conclusion emerges from the comparison of the numerical results with the experimentally observed energy-shift and intensity variation of the Boson Peak with increasing density., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Soft constraints extend classical constraints to represent multiple consistency levels, and thus provide a way to express preferences, fuzziness, and uncertainty. While there are many soft constraint solving formalisms, even distributed ones, by now there seems to be no concurrent programming framework where soft constraints can be handled. In this paper we show how the classical concurrent constraint (cc) programming framework can work with soft constraints, and we also propose an extension of cc languages which can use soft constraints to prune and direct the search for a solution. We believe that this new programming paradigm, called soft cc (scc), can be also very useful in many web-related scenarios. Strategies and concepts for the design of THz emitters based on the quantum cascade scheme are analyzed and modeled in terms of a fully three-dimensional Monte Carlo approach; this allows for a proper inclusion of both carrier-carrier and carrier-phonon scattering mechanisms. Starting from the simulation of previously published far-infrared emitters, where no population inversion is achieved, two innovative designs are proposed. The first one follows the well-established chirped-superlattice scheme whereas the second one employs a double-quantum well superlattice to allow energy relaxation through optical phonon emission. We present a solid-state implementation of ultrafast conditional quantum gates. Our proposal for a quantum-computing device is based on the spin degrees of freedom of electrons confined in semiconductor quantum dots, thus benefiting from relatively long decoherence times. More specifically, combining Pauli blocking effects with properly tailored ultrafast laser pulses, we are able to obtain sub-picosecond spin-dependent switching of the Coulomb interaction, which is the essence of our conditional phase-gate proposal. A novel approach for the control of exciton-exciton Coulomb coupling in semiconductor macroatoms/molecules is proposed. We show that by applying properly tailored external fields, we can induce ---or significantly reinforce--- excitonic dipoles, which in turn allows to control and magnify intra- as well as inter-dot few-exciton effects. Such dipole-dipole interaction mechanism will be accounted for within a simple analytical model, which is found to be in good agreement with fully three-dimensional calculations. The proposed approach may play an important role for the design and realization of fully-optical quantum gates as well as ultrafast optical switches.

In the context of a semiconductor based implementation of a quantum computer the idea of a quantum storage bit is presented and a possible implementation using a double quantum dot structure is considered. We present a theoretical approach to calculate the {\it local} absorption spectrum of excitons confined in a semiconductor nanostructure. Using the density-matrix formalism, we derive a microscopic expression for the non-local susceptibility, both in the linear and non-linear regimes, which includes a three-dimensional description of electronic quantum states and their Coulomb interaction. The knowledge of the non-local susceptibility allows us to calculate a properly defined local absorbed power, that depends on the electro-magnetic field distribution. We report on explicit calculations of the local linear response of excitons confined in single and coupled T-shaped quantum wires with realistic geometry and composition. We show that significant interference effects in the interacting electron-hole wavefunction induce new features in the space-resolved optical spectra, particularly in coupled nanostructures. When the spatial extension of the electromagnetic field is comparable to the exciton Bohr radius, Coulomb effects on the local spectra must be taken into account for a correct assignment of the observed features., Comment: To appear in Phys. New Raman and incoherent neutron scattering data at various temperatures and molecular dynamic simulations in amorphous silica, are compared to obtain the Raman coupling coefficient $C(\omega)$ and, in particular, its low frequency limit. This study indicates that in the $\omega \to 0$ limit $C(\omega)$ extrapolates to a non vanishing value, giving important indications on the characteristics of the vibrational modes in disordered materials; in particular our results indicate that even in the limit of very long wavelength the local disorder implies non-regular local atomic displacements., Comment: Revtex, 4 ps figures

New temperature dependent inelastic x-ray (IXS) and Raman (RS) scattering data are compared to each other and with existing inelastic neutron scattering data in vitreous silica (v-SiO_2), in the 300 - 1775 K region. The IXS data show collective propagating excitations up to Q=3.5 nm^-1. The temperature behaviour of the excitations at Q=1.6 nm^-1 matches that of the boson peak found in INS and RS. This supports the acoustic origin of the excess of vibrational states giving rise to the boson peak in this glass., Comment: 10 pages and 4 figures

We study coupled semiconductor quantum dots theoretically through a generalized Hubbard approach, where intra- and inter-dot Coulomb Correlation, as well as tunneling effects are described on the basis of realistic electron wavefunctions. We find that the ground-state configuration of vertically-coupled double dots undergoes non-trivial quantum transitions as a function of the inter-dot distance d; at intermediate values of d we predict a new phase that should be observable in the addition spectra and in the magnetization changes., Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages, 4 ps figures, to appear in Solid State Communications

We present a theoretical analysis of the effect of dielectric confinement on the Coulomb interaction in dielectrically modulated quantum structures.
