Abstract

Organizational scholars have shown that economic legitimacy is demonstrated by the proliferation of particular organizations and particular products. Thus, I draw on this literature to assess the widespread acceptance of soap operas as economically legitimate, e.g. viable media products. I do so by drawing upon institutional ecology to assess the emergence and proliferation of soap operas in U.S. radio and television broadcasting from 1930 to 2010. This paper shows that density most robustly affects foundings when the legal environment is taken into account. It offers a new look at how legitimacy evolves over time in a particular field.
