We studied the multiband properties of two ultraluminous X-ray sources (2CXO J225728.9−410211 = X-1 and 2CXO J225724.7−410343 = X-2) and their surroundings, in the spiral galaxy NGC 7424. Both sources have approached X-ray luminosities L X ∼ 1040 erg s−1 at some epochs. Thanks to a more accurate astrometric solution (based on Australia Telescope Compact Array and Gaia data), we identified the point-like optical counterpart of X-1, which looks like an isolated B8 supergiant (M ≈ 9 M ⊙, age ≈30 Myr). Instead, X-2 is in a star-forming region (size of about 100 pc × 150 pc), near young clusters and ionized gas. Very large telescope long-slit spectra show a spatially extended region of He  ii λ4686 emission around the X-ray position, displaced by about 50 pc from the brightest star cluster, which corresponds to the peak of lower ionization line emission. We interpret the He  ii λ4686 emission as a signature of X-ray photoionization from the ULX, while the other optical lines are consistent with UV ionization in an ordinary He ii region. The luminosity of this He++ nebula puts it in the same class as other classical photoionized ULX nebulae such as those around Holmberg II X-1 and NGC 5408 X-1. We locate a strong (5.5 GHz luminosity |$\nu \, L_{\nu } \approx 10^{35}$|  erg s−1), steep-spectrum, unresolved radio source at the peak of the low-ionization lines, and discuss alternative physical scenarios for the radio emission. Radio galaxies in clusters of galaxies are a prominent reservoir of magnetic fields and of non-thermal particles, which become mixed with the intracluster medium. We review the observational and theoretical knowledge of the role of these crucial ingredients for the formation of diffuse radio emission in clusters (radio halos, relics, mini halos) and outline the open questions in this field. The recurrent activity of radio AGN, with phases of activity alternating with periods of quiescence, has been known since the early studies of these objects. The full relevance of this cycle is emphasised by the requirement, from the AGN feedback scenario, of a recurrent impact of the energy released by the SMBH during the lifetime of the host galaxy: only in this way can AGN feedback influence galaxy evolution. Radio AGN in different evolutionary phases can be identified by their properties, like morphology and spectral indices. Dying/remnant and restarted sources have been the most elusive to select and characterise, but they are crucial to quantify the full life cycle. Thanks to the availability of new, large radio surveys (particularly at low frequencies), it is finally possible to make a more complete census of these rare sources and start building larger samples. This paper gives an overview of the recent work conducted using a variety of radio telescopes and surveys, highlighting some of the new results characterising the properties of dying/remnant and restarted radio sources and what has been learned about the life cycle of radio AGN. The comparison with the predictions from numerical simulations is also discussed. This review explores the field of X-shaped radio galaxies (XRGs), a distinctive subset of winged radio sources that are identified by two pairs of jetted lobes which aligned by a significant angle, resulting in an inversion-symmetric structure. These lobes, encompassing active (primary) and passive (secondary) phases, exhibit a diverse range of properties across the multiple frequency bands, posing challenges in discerning their formation mechanism. The proposed mechanisms can broadly be categorized into those related either to a triaxial ambient medium, into which the jet propagates, or to a complex, central AGN mechanism, where the jet is generated. The observed characteristics of XRGs as discovered in the most substantial sample to date, challenge the idea that there is universal process at work that produces the individual sources of XRGs. Instead, the observational and numerical results rather imply the absence of an universal model and infer that distinct mechanisms may be at play for the specific sources. By scrutinizing salient and confounding properties, this review intends to propose the potential direction for future research to constrain and constrict individual models applicable to XRGs. We present deep total intensity and polarization observations of the Coma cluster at 1.4 and 6.6 GHz performed with the Sardinia Radio Telescope. By combining the single-dish 1.4 GHz data with archival Very Large Array observations, we obtain new images of the central radio halo and of the peripheral radio relic where we properly recover the brightness from the large-scale structures. At 6.6 GHz, we detect both the relic and the central part of the halo in total intensity and polarization. These are the highest frequency images available to date for these radio sources in this galaxy cluster. In the halo, we find a localized spot of polarized signal, with fractional polarization of about 45 per cent. The polarized emission possibly extends along the north-east side of the diffuse emission. The relic is highly polarized, up to 55 per cent, as usually found for these sources. We confirm the halo spectrum is curved, in agreement with previous single-dish results. The spectral index is α = 1.48 ± 0.07 at a reference frequency of 1 GHz and varies from α ≃ 1.1, at 0.1 GHz, up to α ≃ 1.8, at 10 GHz. We compare the Coma radio halo surface brightness profile at 1.4 GHz (central brightness and e-folding radius) with the same properties of the other haloes, and we find that it has one of the lowest emissivities observed so far. Reanalysing the relic's spectrum in the light of the new data, we obtain a refined radio Mach number of M = 2.9 ± 0.1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Double lobe radio sources associated with active galactic nuclei represent one of the longest studied groups in radio astronomy. A particular subgroup of double radio sources comprises the compact symmetric objects (CSOs). CSOs are distinguished by their prominent double structure and subkpc total size. It has been argued that the vast majority of high-luminosity CSOs (CSO 2s) represent a distinct class of active galactic nuclei with its own morphological structure and lifecycle. In this work, we present theoretical considerations regarding CSO 2s. We develop a semi-analytic evolutionary model, inspired by the results of large-scale numerical simulations of relativistic jets, that reproduces the features of the radio source population. We show that CSO 2s may be generated by finite energy injections and propose stellar tidal disruption events as a possible cause. We find that tidal disruption events of giant branch stars with masses ≳1 M⊙ can fuel these sources and discuss possible approaches to confirming this hypothesis. We predict that if the tidal disruption scenario holds, CSO 2s with sizes less than 400 pc should outnumber larger sources by more than a factor of 10. Our results motivate future numerical studies to determine whether the scenarios we consider for fuelling and source evolution can explain the observed radio morphologies. Multiwavelength observational campaigns directed at these sources will also provide critical insight into the origins of these objects, their environments, and their lifespans. We report on a radiopolarimetric observation of the Saturn–Jupiter Great Conjunction of 2020 using the MeerKAT L -band system, initially carried out for science verification purposes, which yielded a serendipitous discovery of a pulsar. The radiation belts of Jupiter are very bright and time variable: coupled with the sensitivity of MeerKAT, this necessitated development of dynamic imaging techniques, reported on in this work. We present a deep radio 'movie' revealing Jupiter's rotating magnetosphere, a radio detection of Callisto, and numerous background radio galaxies. We also detect a bright radio transient in close vicinity to Saturn, lasting approximately 45 min. Follow-up deep imaging observations confirmed this as a faint compact variable radio source, and yielded detections of pulsed emission by the commensal MeerTRAP search engine, establishing the object's nature as a radio emitting neutron star, designated PSR J2009−2026. A further observation combining deep imaging with the PTUSE pulsar backend measured detailed dynamic spectra for the object. While qualitatively consistent with scintillation, the magnitude of the magnification events and the characteristic time–scales are odd. We are tentatively designating this object a pulsar with anomalous refraction recurring on odd time-scales (PARROT). As part of this investigation, we present a pipeline for detection of variable sources in imaging data, with dynamic spectra and light curves as the products, and compare dynamic spectra obtained from visibility data with those yielded by PTUSE. The WAT (wide-angle-tail) radio galaxies ESO 137-006 and 3C338 show radio filaments including some extending between the two radio tails. If, in analogy to the Parker solar wind model, jets carry a powerful relativistic electric current, the continuity equation shows that slow return current responding to a temporal variation in jet power would inevitably lead to a localized short-lived charging-up, i.e. a temporary patch of electric field. Progenitors of the observed radio filaments are the relic jets left by repeated episodes of nuclear activity and pushed sideways by the ram pressure, though remaining connected to the broad radio lobes. The Debye shielding distance, for energetic particles with a p −2-distribution of momentum p , allows a very large Debye scale at the highest energies, approaching the radio galaxy scale, with a huge total energy content. Here, we propose that discharges dissipating the transient patches of electric fields through the filaments illuminate them. Our proposal is based on gradient drift currents within the bipolar jets, allowing for drift speeds approaching the speed of light. We sketch a scenario how a discharge current sometimes gets manifested as a radio filament connecting opposite lobes/tails of a WAT radio galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By combining high-sensitivity LOFAR 150 MHz, uGMRT 400 MHz and 1250 MHz, GMRT 610 MHz, and VLA 5 GHz data in the ELAIS-N1 field, we study the radio spectral properties of radio-detected star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at observer-frame frequencies of 150–5000 MHz. We select ∼3500 SFGs that have both LOFAR 150 MHz and GMRT 610 MHz detections, and obtain a median two-point spectral index of |$\alpha _{150}^{610}=-0.51\pm 0.01$|⁠. The photometric redshift of these SFGs spans z  = 0.01−6.21. We also measure the two-point radio spectral indices at 150–400–610–1250 MHz and 150–610–5000 MHz, respectively, for the GMRT 610-MHz-detected SFGs, and find that, on average, the radio spectrum of SFGs is flatter at low frequency than at high frequency. At observer-frame 150–5000 MHz, we find that the radio spectrum slightly steepens with increasing stellar mass. However, we only find that the radio spectrum flattens with increasing optical depth at V band at |$\nu \lesssim 1$|  GHz. We suggest that spectral ageing due to the energy loss of CR electrons and thermal free–free absorption could be among the possible main physical mechanisms that drive the above two correlations, respectively. We have used the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) aboard AstroSat to study star formation in a sample of nine dual nuclei galaxies with separations ⪅ 11 kpc, which is an expected outcome of galaxy mergers. To minimize the contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) emission, we have used mid-IR colour cut-offs and masked the AGN-dominated nuclei. The UV continuum slope (β) is used to calculate the internal extinction (A V ) which ranges from 0.53 to 4.04 in the FUV band and 0.44 to 3.10 in the NUV band for the sample. We have detected 1−20 star-forming clumps in our sample galaxies. The extinction-corrected total FUV star formation rate (SFR) ranges from ∼0.35 to ∼32 M⊙ yr−1. Our analyses of A V , specific SFR (sSFR) show that dual nuclei sources are associated with dusty, star-forming galaxies. The FUV − NUV colour maps show redder colour in the nuclear and disc regions while bluer colour is observed in the outskirts of most galaxies which can be due to embedded dust or different stellar populations. We have found some signatures of possible stellar/AGN feedback like a ring of star formation, a redder ring around blue nuclei, etc. However, further observations are required to confirm this. Active galactic nucleus (AGN) outflows including jets and ionized winds have been key phenomena such as jet collimation and AGN feedback to the host galaxy in astrophysics. Radio galaxies, a type of AGN with misaligned jets, have provided valuable insights into the properties and relationships of these outflows. However, several aspects regarding AGN outflows remain unclarified, such as the relationship between jets and ultrafast outflows (UFOs) and the differences between the properties of radio-loud AGN disc winds and radio-quiet AGN ionized winds. To clarify these aspects, radio galaxies containing UFOs and warm absorbers (WAs) must be studied. Currently, both UFOs and WAs have been reported in only two radio galaxies, 3C 390.3 and 4C +74.26. To enhance our understanding of the connection between the jets and ionized winds, we conducted a study on Mrk 6, a potential candidate for the third case of a radio galaxy displaying these characteristics. Using X-ray spectra obtained from XMM–Newton , we performed photoionization modelling using the spex code. The best-fitting model analysis results revealed the presence of a UFO component with a relatively low ionization parameter (Fe  xix / xviii lines blueshifted by |$-34700^{+400}_{-200}~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$|⁠) and a WA component with an outflow velocity of −7600 ± 200 km s−1. To further confirm the nature of the UFO and WA in Mrk 6, we simulated the X-ray imagining and spectroscopy mission spectra. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Compact radio active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are thought to be young radio AGN at the early stage of AGN evolution, thus are ideal laboratory to study the high-energy emission throughout the evolution of radio AGN. In this work, we report for the first time the detection of the high-energy cutoff (E cut), a direct indicator of thermal coronal radiation, of X-ray emission in Mrk 348 (z  = 0.015), a young radio galaxy classified as compact symmetric object. With a 100 ks Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array exposure, we find that the high-energy cutoff (E cut) is firmly detected (⁠|$218^{+124}_{-62}$| keV). Fitting with various Comptonization models indicates the presence of a hot corona with temperature kT e = 35–40 keV. These strongly support the corona origin for its hard X-ray emission. The comparison in the E cut – spectra index Γ plot of Mrk 348 with normal large-scale radio galaxies (mostly Fanaroff–Riley type II) yields no difference between them. This suggests the corona properties in radio sources may not evolve over time (i.e. from the infant stage to mature stage), which is to-be-confirmed with future sample studies of young radio AGNs. The results of high-resolution spectral-line observations of dense molecular gas are presented towards the nuclear region of the type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. MERLIN observations of the 22 GHz H2O maser were made for imaging the known off-nuclear maser emission at radio jet component located about 0.3 arcsec north-east of the radio nucleus in the galaxy. High angular resolution ALMA observations have spatially resolved the molecular gas emissions of HCN and HCO+ in this region. The off-nuclear maser spots are found to nearly overlap with a ring-like molecular gas structure and are tracing an evolving shock-like structure, which appears to be energized by interaction between the radio jet and circumnuclear medium. The scenario of the dynamic jet–ISM interaction is further supported by a systematic shift of the centroid velocities of the off-nuclear maser features over a period of 35 yr. The enhanced integrated flux ratios of the HCN to HCO+ line emission features at component C suggest a kinetic temperature Tk ≳ 300 K and an H2 density of ≳ 106 cm−3, which are conditions where water masers may be formed. The diagnostics of the masering action in this jet–ISM interaction region is exemplary for galaxies hosting off-nuclear H2O maser emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The black hole mass M BH is crucial in constraining the growth of supermassive black holes within their host galaxies. Since direct measurements of M BH with dynamical methods are restricted to a limited number of nearly quiescent nearby galaxies and a small minority of active galactic nuclei (AGN), we must rely on indirect methods. In this work, we utilize an unbiased, volume-limited, hard X-ray selected sample of AGN to compare the reliability of some commonly used indirect methods, emphasizing those that can be applied to obscured AGN. Based on a subsample of AGN with M BH determined via dynamical methods, our study suggests that X-ray-based techniques, such as the scaling method and the one based on the variability measured through the excess variance, are in good agreement with the dynamical methods. On the other hand, the M –σ⋆ correlation based on inactive galaxies tends to systematically overestimate M BH, regardless of the level of obscuration. We provide a correcting factor that produces an acceptable agreement with dynamical values and can be used to quickly correct the M BH computed with this method. We also derive an alternative M –σ⋆ correlation based on this unbiased sample of AGN with a slope considerably shallower than the ones obtained using inactive galaxies, suggesting that the latter may not be appropriate to compute the M BH in AGN. Finally, we find that no quick fix can be applied to correct the M BH obtained from the fundamental plane of black hole activity, casting doubts on the reliability of this method. We present the study of multimessenger signatures of massive black hole (MBH) binaries residing in the centres of galaxy merger remnants. In particular, we first focus on the gravitational wave background (GWB) produced by an ensemble of MBH binary inspirals in the frequency range probed by the Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) experiments. The improved estimates of the characteristic strain were obtained with the inclusion of environmental effects on the MBH binary orbital decay within the galaxy merger remnants, added in post-processing to the semi-analytical model of galaxy formation and evolution SHARK. Secondly, we explore two, intriguing in terms of the MBH binary evolution studies, hypotheses aiming to explain the origins of X-shaped radio galaxies – a peculiar type of objects with double lobe structures, constituting approximately 6–10 per cent of known radio loud galaxies. The two considered scenarios involve either an abrupt change in the jet direction after an MBH merger (a spin-flip) or an unresolved close binary, where each of the two components produces a jet. We find that the estimated GWB amplitude at the reference frequency |$f_0=1 \, {\rm yr}^{-1}$| is in the range of |$A_{\rm { yr^{-1}}} = 1.20\times 10^{-15}{\!-\!}1.46\times 10^{-15}$|⁠ , which is 50 per cent lower than the strain of the signal detected by the PTA experiments. We also show that the spin-flip scenario considered in gas-poor mergers reproduces the observed properties of X-shaped radio galaxies well in terms of flip angle, redshift, and luminosity distributions. We use high-resolution data from the millimetre-Wave Interferometric Survey of Dark Object Masses (WISDOM) project to investigate the connection between circumnuclear gas reservoirs and nuclear activity in a sample of nearby galaxies. Our sample spans a wide range of nuclear activity types including radio galaxies, Seyfert galaxies, low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN) and inactive galaxies. We use measurements of nuclear millimetre continuum emission along with other archival tracers of AGN accretion/activity to investigate previous claims that at, circumnuclear scales (<100 pc), these should correlate with the mass of the cold molecular gas. We find that the molecular gas mass does not correlate with any tracer of nuclear activity. This suggests the level of nuclear activity cannot solely be regulated by the amount of cold gas around the supermassive black hole (SMBH). This indicates that AGN fuelling, that drives gas from the large-scale galaxy to the nuclear regions, is not a ubiquitous process and may vary between AGN type, with time-scale variations likely to be very important. By studying the structure of the central molecular gas reservoirs, we find our galaxies have a range of nuclear molecular gas concentrations. This could indicate that some of our galaxies may have had their circumnuclear regions impacted by AGN feedback, even though they currently have low nuclear activity. Around 400 Myr after the big bang, the ultraviolet emission from star-forming galaxies reionized the Universe. Ionizing radiation (Lyman continuum, LyC) is absorbed by cold neutral hydrogen gas (H  i) within galaxies, hindering the escape of LyC photons. Since the H  i reservoir of LyC emitters has never been mapped, major uncertainties remain on how LyC photons escape galaxies and ionize the intergalactic medium. We have directly imaged the neutral gas in the nearby reionization-era analogue galaxy Haro 11 with the 21 cm line to identify the mechanism enabling ionizing radiation escape. We find that merger-driven interactions have caused a bulk offset of the neutral gas by about |$6\,$| kpc from the centre of the galaxy, where LyC emission production sites are located. This could facilitate the escape of ionizing radiation into our line of sight. Galaxy interactions can cause both elevated LyC production and large-scale displacement of H  i from the regions where these photons are produced. They could contribute to the anisotropic escape of LyC radiation from galaxies and the reionization of the Universe. Low-frequency radio observations show an increasing number of radio galaxies located in galaxy clusters that display peculiar morphologies and spectral profiles. This is the result of the dynamical interaction of the galaxy with the surrounding medium. Studying this phenomenon is key to understanding the evolution of low-energy relativistic particles in the intracluster medium. We present a multifrequency study of the three head–tail (HT) radio galaxies and the radio halo in the galaxy cluster ZwCl 0634.1+4747. We make use of observations at four frequencies performed with LOFAR LBA (53 MHz), HBA (144 MHz), GMRT (323 MHz), and VLA (1518 MHz) data. The use of extremely low radio frequency observations, such as LOFAR at 53 and 144 MHz, allowed us to detect the extension of the tails up to a distance of ∼1 Mpc. We extracted spectral profiles along the tails in order to identify possible departures from a pure ageing model, such as the Jaffe–Perola (JP) model, which only involves synchrotron and inverse-Compton losses. We found clear evidence of departures from this simple ageing model, such as surface brightness enhancement and spectral flattening along all of the tails. This can be interpreted as the consequence of particle re-acceleration along the tails. Possible explanations for this behaviour include the interaction between a shock and the radio tails or a turbulence-driven re-acceleration mechanism. We identify a source (J1507+3013) with an extended diffuse radio emission around an elliptical galaxy from the Very Large Array (VLA) Faint Images of Radio Sky at Twenty-cm (FIRST) survey. J1507+3013 possesses a morphology similar to the recently identified circular, low-surface-brightness, edge-brightened radio sources commonly known as odd radio circles (ORCs). Such diffuse emissions, as reported in this paper, are also found in mini-haloes and fossil radio galaxies, but the results presented here do not match the properties of mini-haloes or of fossil radio galaxies. The extended emission observed in J1507+3013 around an elliptical galaxy is a very rare class of diffuse emission that is unlike any previously known class of diffuse emission. The extended diffuse emission of J1507+3013 is also detected in the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) at 144 MHz. J1507+3013 is hosted by an optical galaxy near the geometrical centre of the structure with a photometric redshift of z = 0.079. The physical extent of J1507+3013 is approximately 68 kpc, with a peak-to-peak angular size of 44 arcsec. It shows significantly higher flux densities compared with previously discovered ORCs. The spectral index of J1507+3013 varies between −0.90 and −1.4 in different regions of the diffuse structure, which is comparable to the case for previously discovered ORCs but less steep than for mini-haloes and fossil radio galaxies. If we consider J1507+3013 as a candidate ORC, then this would be the closest and most luminous ORC discovered so far. We present new high-sensitivity e -MERLIN and Very Large Array (VLA) radio images of the prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 at 5, 10, and 21 GHz. We image the radio jet, from the compact components north-east (NE), C, S1, and S2 to the faint double-lobed jet structure of the NE and south-west (SW) jet lobes. We map the jet between 15 kλ  and  3300 kλ spatial scales by combining enhanced -Multi Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (e -MERLIN) and VLA data for the first time. Components NE, C, and S2 have steep spectra indicative of optically thin non-thermal emission domination between 5 and 21 GHz. Component S1, which is where the active galactic nucleus resides, has a flat radio spectrum. We report a new component, S2a, a part of the southern jet. We compare these new data with the MERLIN and VLA data observed in 1983, 1992, and 1995 and report a flux decrease by a factor of 2 in component C, suggesting variability of this jet component. With the high angular resolution e -MERLIN maps, we detect the bow shocks in the NE jet lobe that coincide with the molecular gas outflows observed with ALMA. The NE jet lobe has a jet power of |$P_{\rm jet-NElobe}\, =\,$| 6.7 × 1042 erg s−1 and is considered to be responsible for driving out the dense molecular gas observed with ALMA around the same region. The reported detection of the global 21-cm signal by the EDGES collaboration is significantly stronger than standard astrophysical predictions. One possible explanation is an early radio excess above the cosmic microwave background. Such a radio background could have been produced by high-redshift galaxies, if they were especially efficient in producing low-frequency synchrotron radiation. We have previously studied the effects of such an inhomogeneous radio background on the 21-cm signal; however, we made a simplifying assumption of isotropy of the background seen by each hydrogen cloud. Here, we perform a complete calculation that accounts for the fact that the 21-cm absorption occurs along the line of sight, and is therefore sensitive to radio sources lying behind each absorbing cloud. We find that the complete calculation strongly enhances the 21-cm power spectrum during cosmic dawn, by up to two orders of magnitude; on the other hand, the effect on the global 21-cm signal is only at the 5 per cent level. In addition to making the high-redshift 21-cm fluctuations potentially more easily observable, the line-of-sight radio effect induces a new anisotropy in the 21-cm power spectrum. While these effects are particularly large for the case of an extremely enhanced radio efficiency, they make it more feasible to detect even a moderately enhanced radio efficiency in early galaxies. We use K -band multi-object near-infrared spectroscopy with Keck/MOSFIRE to search for environmental imprints on the gas properties of 27 narrow-band selected H α emitters (HAEs) across the three major clumps of the assembling USS1558−003 protocluster at z  = 2.53. We target the H α and [N  ii ]λ6584 emission lines to obtain star formation rates (SFR) and gas-phase oxygen abundances for our sources, confirming the membership of 23 objects. HAEs belonging to this protocluster display enhanced SFRs with respect to the main sequence of star formation at the same cosmic epoch. This effect is more prominent for low-mass galaxies (⁠|$\mathrm{\log \mathit{ M}_*/M_\odot \lt 10.0}$|⁠), which may be experiencing a vigorous phase of mass assembly shortly after they were formed. We compute the individual and stacked gas-phase metallicities for our sources finding a metallicity deficit for low-mass objects when compared against the field mass–metallicity relation and the massive Spiderweb protocluster at z  = 2.16. These results suggest that HAEs within USS1558−003 may be less evolved than those in the Spiderweb protocluster. Finally, we explore the gas metallicity–gas fraction relation for a small sample of five galaxies with CO(3–2) molecular gas information. Assuming our objects are in equilibrium, we obtain a relatively wide range of mass loading factors (λ = 0.5–2) matching field samples at the cosmic noon but in contrast with our previous results in the Spiderweb protocluster. We speculate that these discrepancies between protoclusters may be (partly) driven by differences in their current dynamical and mass assembly stages, hinting at the co-evolution of protoclusters and their galaxy populations at 2 < z < 3. The Revised Third Cambridge Catalogue of Radio Sources (3CR) has been instrumental in the study of active galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) for the past sixty years. The catalogue's publication led to the discovery of quasars and has shaped our understanding of extragalactic radio sources, including their morphologies, energy sources, and host galaxies. Extragalactic 3CR sources can be classified as high-power, efficiently accreting radio galaxies and quasars, or low-power, inefficiently accreting radio galaxies. Jets emitted by AGN can have a significant impact on the surrounding host galaxy, influencing star formation rates and overall structure. Recent studies have shown that every galaxy emits radio waves connected to stellar processes, challenging the distinction between radio-loud and radio-quiet galaxies. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a peculiar subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Among them, TXS 1206+549 belongs to a small group of radio-loud and γ -ray-emitting NLS1 galaxies. We focus on the radio properties of this galaxy by analysing archival, high-resolution, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging observations taken at 8 GHz frequency in six epochs between 1994 and 2018. Using the milliarcsecond-scale radio structure, we can resolve a core and a jet component whose angular separation increases by (0.055 ± 0.006) mas yr−1. This corresponds to an apparent superluminal jet component motion of (3.5 ± 0.4) c . From the core brightness temperature and the jet component proper motion, we determine the characteristic Doppler-boosting factor, the bulk Lorentz factor, and the jet viewing angle. We find no compelling evidence for a very closely aligned blazar-type jet. The parameters for TXS 1206+549 resemble those of radio-loud quasar jets with a moderate Lorentz factor ( Γ ≈ 4 ) and ϑ ≈ 24 ∘ inclination to the line of sight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report an ASKAP search for associated H  i 21-cm absorption against bright radio sources from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue (MRC) 1-Jy sample. The search uses pilot survey data from the ASKAP First Large Absorption Survey in H  i (FLASH) covering the redshift range 0.42 < z < 1.00. From a sample of 62 MRC 1-Jy radio galaxies and quasars, we report three new detections of associated H  i 21-cm absorption, yielding an overall detection fraction of |$1.8\,{{\,\rm per\,cent}}^{+4.0\,{{\,\rm per\,cent}}}_{-1.5\,{{\,\rm per\,cent}}}$|⁠. The detected systems comprise two radio galaxies (MRC 2216−281 at z  = 0.657 and MRC 0531−237 at z  = 0.851) and one quasar (MRC 2156−245 at z  = 0.862). The MRC 0531−237 absorption system is the strongest found to date, with a velocity integrated optical depth of |$\rm 143.8 \pm 0.4 \ km \ s^{-1}$|⁠. All three objects with detected H  i 21-cm absorption are peaked-spectrum or compact steep-spectrum (CSS) radio sources. Two of them show strong interplanetary scintillation at 162 MHz, implying that the radio continuum source is smaller than 1 arcsec in size even at low frequencies. Among the class of peaked-spectrum and compact steep-spectrum radio sources, the H  i detection fraction is |$23\,{{\,\rm per\,cent}}^{+22\,{{\,\rm per\,cent}}}_{-13\,{{\,\rm per\,cent}}}$|⁠. All three detections have a high 1.4 GHz radio luminosity, with MRC 0531−237 and MRC 2216−281 having the highest values in the sample, |$\rm \gt 27.5 \ W \ Hz^{-1}$|⁠. The preponderance of extended radio sources in our sample could partially explain the overall low detection fraction, while the effects of a redshift evolution in gas properties and AGN UV luminosity on the neutral gas absorption still need to be investigated. We present a study of molecular gas, traced via CO (3–2) from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data, of four z < 0.2, 'radio quiet', type 2 quasars (Lbol ∼ 1045.3–1046.2 erg s−1; L |$_{\mathrm{1.4\, GHz}}\sim 10^{23.7}\!-\!10^{24.3}$|   W  Hz−1). Targets were selected to have extended radio lobes (≥ 10 kpc), and compact, moderate-power jets (1–10 kpc; P jet ∼ 1043.2–1043.7 erg s−1). All targets show evidence of central molecular outflows, or injected turbulence, within the gas discs (traced via high-velocity wing components in CO emission-line profiles). The inferred velocities (V out = 250–440 km s−1) and spatial scales (0.6–1.6 kpc), are consistent with those of other samples of luminous low-redshift active galactic nuclei. In two targets, we observe extended molecular gas structures beyond the central discs, containing 9–53  per cent of the total molecular gas mass. These structures tend to be elongated, extending from the core, and wrap-around (or along) the radio lobes. Their properties are similar to the molecular gas filaments observed around radio lobes of, mostly 'radio loud', brightest cluster galaxies. They have the following: projected distances of 5–13 kpc; bulk velocities of 100–340 km s−1; velocity dispersion of 30–130 km s−1; inferred mass outflow rates of 4–20 M⊙ yr−1; and estimated kinetic powers of 1040.3–1041.7 erg s−1. Our observations are consistent with simulations that suggest moderate-power jets can have a direct (but modest) impact on molecular gas on small scales, through direct jet–cloud interactions. Context. The recently discovered population of faint Fanaroff-Riley type 0 (FR0) radio galaxies has been interpreted as the extension to low power of the classical FRI sources. Their radio emission appears to be concentrated in very compact parsec scale cores, any extended emission is very weak or absent, and very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations show that jets are already mildly or sub-relativistic at parsec scales. Based on these observational properties, we propose here that the jets of FR0s are strongly decelerated and disturbed at the parsec scale by hydrodynamical instabilities. Aims. With the above scenario in mind, we studied the dynamics of a low-power relativistic jet propagating into a confining external medium, focusing on the effects of entrainment and mixing promoted by the instabilities developing at the jet-environment interface downstream of a recollimation shock. Methods. We performed a 3D relativistic hydrodynamical simulation of a recollimated jet by means of the state-of-the-art code PLUTO. The jet was initially conical, relativistic (with an initial Lorentz factor Γ = 5), cold, and light with respect to the confining medium, whose pressure is assumed to slowly decline with distance. The magnetic field is assumed to be dynamically unimportant. Results. The 3D simulation shows that, after the first recollimation and reflection shock system, a rapidly growing instability develops, as a result of the interplay between recollimation-induced instabilities and Richtmyer-Meshkov modes. In turn, the instabilities promote strong mixing and entrainment that rapidly lead to the deceleration of the jet and spread its momentum to slowly moving, highly turbulent external gas. We argue that this mechanism could account for the peculiarities of the low-power FR0 jets. For outflows with a higher power, Lorentz factor, or magnetic field, we expect that the destabilizing effects are less effective, allowing the survival of the jet up to the kiloparsec scale, as observed in FRIs. Context. The triggering and evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the interaction of the AGN with its host galaxy is an important topic in extragalactic astrophysics. Radio sources with peaked spectra (peaked spectrum sources, PSS) and compact symmetric objects (CSO) are powerful, compact, and presumably young AGNs and therefore particularly suitable to study aspects of the AGN-host connection. Aims. We use a statistical approach to investigate properties of a PSS-CSO sample that are related to host galaxies and could potentially shed light on the link between host galaxies and AGNs. The main goal is to compare the PSS-CSO sample with a matching comparison sample of extended sources (ECS) to see if the two have significant differences. Methods. We analysed composite spectra, diagnostic line diagrams, multi-band spectral energy distributions (MBSEDs), star formation (SF) indicators, morphologies, and cluster environments for a sample of 121 PSSs and CSOs for which spectra are available from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The statistical results were compared with those of the ECS sample, where we generally considered the two subsamples of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) and radio galaxies separately. The analysis is based on a large set of archival data in the spectral range from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared. Results. We find significant differences between the PSS-CSO and the ECS sample. In particular, we find that the ECS sample has a higher proportion of passive galaxies with a lower star formation activity. This applies to both sub-samples (QSOs or radio galaxies) as well as to the entire sample. The star formation rates of the PSS-CSO host galaxies with available data are typically in the range ∼0 to 5 ℳ⊙ yr−1, and the stellar masses are in the range 3 × 1011 to 1012 ℳ⊙. Secondly, in agreement with previous results, we find a remarkably high proportion of PSS-CSO host galaxies with merger signatures. The merger fraction of the PSS-CSO sample is 0.61 ± 0.07, which is significantly higher than that of the comparison sample (0.15 ± 0.06). We suggest that this difference can be explained by assuming that the majority of the PSSs and CSOs cannot evolve to extended radio sources and are therefore not represented in our comparison sample. Context. Radio galaxies dominate the sky at radio wavelengths and represent an essential piece in the galaxy evolution puzzle. High-resolution studies focussed on statistical samples of radio galaxies are expected to shed light on the triggering mechanisms of the active galactic nucleus in their centre, alternating between the phases of activity and quiescence. Aims. For this work, we zoomed in on the sub-arcsec radio structures in the central regions of the 35 radio galaxies in the area covering 6.6 deg2 of the Lockman Hole region. The sources studied here were previously classified as active, remnant, and candidate restarted radio galaxies based on the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observations at 150 MHz. We examined the morphologies and studied the spectral properties of their central regions to explore their evolutionary stages and to revise the morphological and spectral criteria used to select the initial sample. Methods. We used the newly available LOFAR 150 MHz image obtained using international baselines, yielding a resolution of 0.38″ × 0.30″, making this the first systematic study of the nuclear regions at such a high resolution and low frequency. We used publicly available images from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm survey at 1.4 GHz and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) Sky Survey at 3 GHz to achieve our goals. In addition, for one of the restarted candidates, we present new dedicated observations with the VLA at 3 GHz. Results. We characterised the central regions of the radio galaxies in our sample and found various morphologies, some even mimicking well-known double-double radio galaxies but on a smaller scale, that is, a few tens of kiloparsecs for the size of the restarted activity. We also see the beginnings of active jets or distinct detections unrelated to the large-scale structure. Furthermore, we found a variety of radio spectra characterising the sources in our sample, such as flat, steep, or peaked in the frequency range between 150 MHz and 3 GHz, indicative of the different life-cycle phases of the sources in our sample. Based on these analyses, we confirm five out of six previously considered restarted candidates and identify three more restarted candidates from the active sample. As the number of restarted candidates still exceeds that of remnant candidates, this is consistent with previous results suggesting that the restarted phase can occur after a relatively short remnant phase (i.e. a few tens of millions of years). Using empty-field 'Quick Look' images from the first two epochs of the VLA Sky Survey (VLASS) observations, centred on the positions of ∼3700 individually radio-non-detected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z ≥ 4, we performed image stacking analysis to examine the sub-mJy emission at 3 GHz. We found characteristic monochromatic radio powers of P char = (2–13) × 1024 W Hz−1, indicating that AGN-related radio emission is widespread in the sample. The signal-to-noise ratios of the redshift-binned median stacked maps are between 4–6, and we expect that with the inclusion of the yet to be completed third-epoch VLASS observations, the detection limit defined as signal-to-noise ratio SNR ≥ 6 could be reached, and the redshift dependence can be determined. To obtain information on the general spectral properties of the faint radio emission in high-redshift AGNs, we confined the sample to ∼3000 objects covered by both the VLASS and the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters (FIRST) survey. We found that the flux densities from the median stacked maps show a characteristic spectral index of α* = −0.30 ± 0.15, which is in agreement with the median spectral index of the radio-detected z ≥ 4 AGNs from our high-redshift AGN catalogue. The three-band mid-infrared colour–colour diagram based on Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer observations provides further support regarding the AGN contribution to the radio emission in the sub-mJy sample. The prototypical powerful FR II radio galaxy Cygnus A fits extremely well into the quasar/radio galaxy unified model: high polarization with an angle almost perpendicular to the radio jet and polarized flux showing broad permitted lines. It has been claimed that ionized gas in the torus reveals a very clear torus shape via Bremmstrahlung emission. We rule out the later with an energetic argument, and we constrain the molecular and atomic gas properties with existing observations. The atomic absorption against the core has been shown to match the X-ray column only if the spin temperature is an implausible T s = 1 × 106 K. This points to a molecular medium for the X-ray column |$\log (N_{\rm H} ~[\rm {cm^{-2}}]) \sim 23.5$|⁠. Yet not low-J CO absorption is detected to sensitive limits. The non-detection is surprising given that this powerful radio galaxy hosts a luminous, dust-obscured active nucleus and copious warm molecular hydrogen. These conditions suggest a detectable level of emission. Furthermore, the torus X-ray column density suggests detectable absorption. We explore various possibilities to explain the lack of a signature from warm CO (200–250 K). Specifically, that the radiative excitation by the radio core renders low-J CO absorption below current sensitivities, and that high-J levels are well populated and conducive to producing absorption. We test this hypothesis using archival Hershel /SPIRE FTS observations of Cygnus A of high-J CO lines (14 ≥ J ≥ 4 transitions). Still high-J CO lines are not detected. We suggest that ALMA observations near its high frequency limit can be critical to obtain the signature of molecular line of the torus of Cygnus A. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we combine the Early Science radio continuum data from the MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) Survey, with optical and near-infrared data and release the cross-matched catalogues. The radio data used in this work covers 0.86 deg2 of the COSMOS field, reaches a thermal noise of 1.7  μ Jy beam−1 and contains 6102 radio components. We visually inspect and cross-match the radio sample with optical and near-infrared data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) and UltraVISTA surveys. This allows the properties of active galactic nuclei and star-forming populations of galaxies to be probed out to z ≈ 5. Additionally, we use the likelihood ratio method to automatically cross-match the radio and optical catalogues and compare this to the visually cross-matched catalogue. We find that 94 per cent of our radio source catalogue can be matched with this method, with a reliability of 95 per cent. We proceed to show that visual classification will still remain an essential process for the cross-matching of complex and extended radio sources. In the near future, the MIGHTEE survey will be expanded in area to cover a total of ∼20 deg2; thus the combination of automated and visual identification will be critical. We compare the redshift distribution of SFG and AGN to the SKADS and T-RECS simulations and find more AGN than predicted at z ∼ 1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radio blazars have been linked both to individual high-energy neutrino events and to excesses in likelihood sky maps constructed from lower-energy neutrino data. However, the exact mechanism by which neutrinos are produced in these sources is still unknown. Here, we demonstrate that IceCube neutrinos with energies over 200 TeV, which were previously associated with bright radio blazars, are significantly more likely to be accompanied by flares of lower-energy events, compared to those lacking blazar counterparts. The parsec-scale core radio flux density of blazars, positioned within the error regions of energetic events, is strongly correlated with the likelihood of a day-scale lower-energy neutrino flare in directional and temporal coincidence with the high-energy event, reported by IceCube. The probability of a chance correlation is 3.6 × 10−4. This confirms the neutrino-blazar connection in a new and independent way, and provides valuable clues to understanding the origin of astrophysical neutrinos. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report multi-frequency observations of two large radio galaxies, 3C 35 and 3C 284. The low-frequency observations were done with Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope starting from ∼ 150 MHz, and the high-frequency observations were done with the Very Large Array. We have studied the radio morphology of these two sources at different frequencies. We present the spectral ageing map using two of the most widely used models, the Kardashev-Pacholczyk and Jaffe-Perola models. Another more realistic and complex Tribble model is also used. We also calculate the jet power and the speed of the radio lobes of these galaxies. We check whether any episodic jet activity is present in these galaxies and found no sign of such activity. We report on the detection of diffuse radio emission with peculiar morphology in the central region of the galaxy cluster Abell 2657. The most striking feature identified in our 144 MHz LOFAR image is a bifurcated radio arc that extends for a projected size of 150−200 kpc. From the analysis of XMM-Newton data, we find clear evidence of gas sloshing in the cluster and a possible dip in X-ray surface brightness between the two radio arcs which deserves confirmation. Interestingly, the synchrotron emission of the bifurcated radio arc is stretched along the sloshing spiral. We compare our observational results with numerical simulations of non-thermal components interacting with gas motions. We suggest that the detected emission may trace a radio bubble shredded by gas sloshing, where relativistic electrons and magnetic fields are expected to be stretched and stirred as a consequence of tangential flows induced by the spiralling gas motion. Lastly, we report on the presence of two thin (6−7 kpc in width) and parallel strands of radio emission embedded in the outer arc that are morphologically similar to the emerging population of non-thermal filaments observed in galaxy clusters, radio galaxies, and the Galactic centre. While this work further demonstrates the complex interplay between thermal and non-thermal components in the intracluster medium, follow-up observations in radio and X-rays are required to firmly determine the origin of the features observed in Abell 2657. We report LOFAR and Very Large Array (VLA) detections of extended radio emission in the spiral galaxy HCG 97b, hosted by an X-ray bright galaxy group. The extended radio emission detected at 144 MHz, 1.4 GHz, and 4.86 GHz is elongated along the optical disc and has a tail that extends 27 kpc in projection towards the centre of the group at GHz frequencies or 60 kpc at 144 MHz. Chandra X-ray data show two off-nuclear ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs), with the farther one being a plausible candidate for an accreting intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). The asymmetry observed in both CO emission morphology and kinematics indicates that HCG 97b is undergoing ram-pressure stripping, with the leading side at the south-eastern edge of the disc. Moreover, the VLA 4.86 GHz image reveals two bright radio blobs near one ULX, aligning with the disc and tail, respectively. The spectral indices in the disc and tail are comparable and flat (α > −1), suggesting the presence of recent outflows potentially linked to ULX feedback. This hypothesis gains support from estimates showing that the bulk velocity of the relativistic electrons needed for transport from the disc to the tail is approximately |${\sim}1300\, \rm km~s^{-1}$|⁠. This velocity is much higher than those observed in ram-pressure stripped galaxies (⁠|$100{-}600\, \rm km~s^{-1}$|⁠), implying an alternative mechanism aiding the stripping process. Therefore, we conclude that HCG 97b is subject to ram pressure, with the formation of its stripped radio tail likely influenced by the putative IMBH activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first billion years of cosmic history remains largely unobserved. We demonstrate, using a novel machine learning technique, how combining upper limits on the spatial fluctuations in the 21-cm signal with observations of the sky-averaged 21-cm signal from neutral hydrogen can improve our understanding of this epoch. By jointly analysing data from the Shaped Antenna measurement of the background RAdio Spectrum (SARAS3, redshift z ≈ 15−25) and limits from the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA, z ≈ 8 and 10), we show that such a synergetic analysis provides tighter constraints on the astrophysics of galaxies 200 million years after the big bang than can be achieved with the individual data sets. Although our constraints are weak, this is the first time data from a sky-averaged 21-cm experiment and power spectrum experiment have been analysed together. In synergy, the two experiments leave only |$64.9^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$|  per cent of the explored broad theoretical parameter space to be consistent with the joint data set, in comparison to |$92.3^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$|  per cent for SARAS3 and |$79.0^{+0.5}_{-0.2}$|  per cent for HERA alone. We use the joint analysis to constrain star formation efficiency, minimum halo mass for star formation, X-ray luminosity of early emitters, and the radio luminosity of early galaxies. The joint analysis disfavours at 68 per cent confidence a combination of galaxies with X-ray emission that is ≲33 and radio emission that is ≳32 times as efficient as present day galaxies. We disfavour at 95 per cent confidence scenarios in which power spectra are ≥126 mK2 at z  = 25 and the sky-averaged signals are ≤−277 mK. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present here uGMRT band 4 (∼650 MHz) polarization images of 8 BL Lac objects belonging to the Palomar-Green (PG) 'blazar' sample. A large fraction of the sources (⁠|$\sim 63~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) reveal core-halo radio structures with most of the polarization detected in the inner core-jet regions. PG1101 + 385 and PG2254 + 075 exhibit a 'spine-sheath structure' in polarization. The core-halo and 'spine-sheath' structures are consistent with the Unified Scheme suggestion that BL Lacs are the pole-on beamed counterparts of Fanaroff–Riley (FR) type I radio galaxies. PG1418 + 546 and PG0851 + 203 (OJ287) show the presence of terminal hotspots similar to FR type II radio galaxies. They were also found to be low-spectrally peaked BL Lacs, supportive of the 'blazar envelope' scenario for BL Lacs and quasars. Fractional polarization ranges from 1 to 13 per cent in the cores and 2 to 26 per cent in the inner jets/lobes of the sample BL Lacs. Compared to the varied radio morphology of quasars from the PG 'blazar' sample, the BL Lacs appear to be less diverse. A comparison of the inferred core magnetic (B -) field structures on arcsec- (kpc-) scales w.r.t. the Very Long Baseline Interferometry jet direction does not reveal any preferred orientation, suggesting that if large-scale ordered B -fields exist, they do so on scales smaller than probed by the current observations. However, the presence of polarized emission on arcsec-scales suggests that any mixing of thermal plasma with the synchrotron emitting plasma is insufficient to fully depolarize the emission via the internal depolarization process. The low- J rotational transitions of 12CO are commonly used to trace the distribution of molecular gas in galaxies. Their ratios are sensitive to excitation and physical conditions in the molecular gas. Spatially resolved studies of CO ratios are still sparse and affected by flux calibration uncertainties, especially since most do not have high angular resolution or do not have short-spacing information and hence miss any diffuse emission. We compare the low- J CO ratios across the disc of two massive, star-forming spiral galaxies NGC 2903 and NGC 3627 to investigate whether and how local environments drive excitation variations at GMC scales. We use Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the three lowest- J CO transitions at a common angular resolution of 4 arcsec (190 pc). We measure median line ratios of |$R_{21}=0.67^{+0.13}_{-0.11}$|⁠ , |$R_{32}=0.33^{+0.09}_{-0.08}$|⁠ , and |$R_{31}=0.24^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$| across the full disc of NGC 3627. We see clear CO line ratio variation across the galaxy consistent with changes in temperature and density of the molecular gas. In particular, towards the centre, R 21, R 32, and R 31 increase by 35  per cent, 50  per cent, and 66  per cent, respectively, compared to their average disc values. The overall line ratio trends suggest that CO(3–2) is more sensitive to changes in the excitation conditions than the two lower J transitions. Furthermore, we find a similar radial R 32 trend in NGC 2903, albeit a larger disc-wide average of |$\langle R_{32}\rangle =0.47^{+0.14}_{-0.08}$|⁠. We conclude that the CO low- J line ratios vary across environments in such a way that they can trace changes in the molecular gas conditions, with the main driver being changes in temperature. The Main galaxy cluster in the Abell 781 system is undergoing a significant merger and accretion process with peripheral emission to the north and south-eastern flanks of the merging structure. Here we present a full polarimetric study of this field, using radio interferometric data taken at 21 and 92 cm with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), to a sensitivity better than any 21 cm (L band) observation to date. We detect evidence of extended low-level emission of 1.9 mJy associated with the Main cluster at 21 cm, although this detection necessitates further follow-up by modern instruments due to the limited resolution of the WSRT. We present relativistic magnetohydrodynamic modelling of jets running into hydrostatic, spherically symmetric cluster atmospheres. For the first time in a numerical simulation, we present model cluster atmospheres based upon the universal pressure profile (UPP), incorporating a temperature profile for a 'typical' self-similar atmosphere described by only one parameter – M 500. We explore a comprehensive range of realistic atmospheres and jet powers and derive dynamic, energetic, and polarimetric data which provide insight into what we should expect of future high-resolution studies of AGN outflows. From the simulated synchrotron emission maps which include Doppler beaming we find sidedness distributions that agree well with observations. We replicated a number of findings from our previous work, such as higher power jets inflating larger aspect-ratio lobes, and the cluster environment impacting the distribution of energy between the lobe and shocked regions. Comparing UPP and β-profiles we find that the cluster model chosen results in a different morphology for the resultant lobes with the UPP more able to clear lobe material from the core; and that these different atmospheres influence the ratio between the various forms of energy in the fully developed lobes. This work also highlights the key role played by Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities in the formation of realistic lobe aspect ratios. Our simulations point to the need for additional lobe-widening mechanisms at high jet powers, for example jet precession. Given that the UPP is our most representative general cluster atmosphere, these numerical simulations represent the most realistic models yet for spherically symmetric atmospheres. We present an optical-to-radio study of the BL Lac object S4 0954+658 observations during 1998–2023. The measurements were obtained with the SAO RAS Zeiss-1000 and AS-500/2 0.5-m telescopes in 2003–2023, with the RATAN-600 radio telescope at 1.25 (0.96, 1.1), 2.3, 4.7 (3.7, 3.9), 8.2 (7.7), 11.2, 22.3 (21.7) GHz in 1998–2023, with the IAA RAS RT-32 Zelenchukskaya and Badary telescopes at 5.05 and 8.63 GHz in 2020–2023, and with the RT-22 single-dish telescope of CrAO RAS at 36.8 GHz in 2009–2023. In this period the blazar was showing extremely high broadband activity with the variability amplitude of the flux densities up to 70–100 both in the optical and radio domains. During the period of 2014–2023 the blazar displayed extremely high activity in the radio wavelengths, and we detected multiple radio flares of varying amplitude and duration. The large flares last on average from 0.3 to 1 year at 22–36.8 GHz and slightly longer at 5–11.2 GHz. The optical flares are shorter and last 7–50 days. The characteristic time scale of variation at 5–22 GHz is about 100 days in the most active epoch of 2014–2023 and about 1000 days for the state with lower activity in 2009–2014. We found a general correlation between the optical, radio, and -ray flux variations, which suggesting that we observe the same photon population from different emission regions. We estimated the linear size of this region as 0.5–2 pc for different conditions. A broadband radio spectrum with two components of the S4 0954+658 jet was modeled using both electrons and protons as emitting particles. Study of high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) can shed light on the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) evolution in massive elliptical galaxies. The vast majority of observed high-redshift AGNs are quasars, and there are very few radio galaxies at redshifts . We present the radio properties of 173 sources optically identified with radio galaxies at with flux densities mJy. Literature data were collected for compilation of broadband radio spectra, estimation of radio variability, radio luminosity, and radio loudness. Almost 60 of the galaxies have steep or ultra-steep radio spectra; 22 have flat, inverted, upturn, and complex spectral shapes, and 18 have peaked spectra (PS). The majority of the PS sources in the sample (20/31) are megahertz-peaked spectrum source candidates, i.e. possibly very young and compact radio galaxies. The median values of the variability indices at 11 and 5 GHz are and , which generally indicates a weak or moderate character of the long-term variability of the studied galaxies. The typical radio luminosity and radio loudness are erg s and respectively. We have found less prominent features of the bright compact radio cores in our sample compared to high-redshift quasars at . We here present 0.02–0.04″ resolution ALMA observation of the compact obscured nucleus (CON) of IRAS 17578-0400. A dusty torus within the nucleus, approximately 4 pc in radius, has been uncovered, exhibiting a usually flat spectral index at ALMA band 3, likely due to the millimeter corona emission from the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). The dense gas disk, traced by 13CO(1-0), spans 7 pc in radius and suggests an outflow driven by a disk wind due to its asymmetrical structure along the minor axis. Collimated molecular outflows (CMO), traced by the low-velocity components of the HCN(3-2) and HCO+(3-2) lines, align with the minor axis gas disk. Examination of position-velocity plots of HCN(3-2) and HCO+(3-2) reveals a flared dense gas disk extended a radius of ∼60 pc, infalling and rotating at speeds of about 200 km s−1 and 300 km s−1 respectively. A centrifugal barrier, located around 4 pc from the dynamical center, implies an SMBH mass of approximately 108 M ȯ, consistent with millimeter corona emission estimates. The CMO maintains a steady rotation speed of 200 km s−1 over the 100 pc scale along the minor axis. The projected speed of the CMO is about 80 km s−1, corresponding to around ∼500 km s−1, assuming an inclination angle of 80°. Such a kinematics structure of disk-driven collimated rotating molecular outflow with gas supplies from a falling rotating disk indicates that the feedback of the compact obscured nucleus is likely regulated by the momentum transfer of the molecular gas that connects to both the feeding of the nuclear starburst and supermassive black hole. One of the key questions on active galactic nuclei (AGN) in galaxy clusters is how AGN could affect the formation and evolution of member galaxies and galaxy clusters in the history of the Universe. To address this issue, we investigate the dependence of AGN number fraction (f AGN) on cluster redshift (z cl) and distance from the cluster center (R |$/$| R 200). We focus on more than 27000 galaxy groups and clusters at 0.1 < z cl < 1.4 with more than 1 million member galaxies selected from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. By combining various AGN selection methods based on infrared (IR), radio, and X-ray data, we identify 2688 AGN. We find that (i) f AGN increases with z cl and (ii) f AGN decreases with R |$/$| R 200. The main contributors to the rapid increase of f AGN towards high- z and cluster center are IR- and radio-selected AGN, respectively. These results indicate that the emergence of the AGN population depends on the environment and redshift, and galaxy groups and clusters at high z play an important role in AGN evolution. We also find that cluster–cluster mergers may not drive AGN activity in at least the cluster center, while we have tentative evidence that cluster–cluster mergers could enhance AGN activity in the outskirts of (particularly massive) galaxy clusters. We systematically analyzed Swift/XRT X-ray data of gamma-ray-emitting radio galaxies (RGs) to study the origin of X-ray radiation. We studied the short-duration variability of spectra by using Swift/XRT data for 20 RGs. We found that gamma-ray-emitting RGs with a higher gamma-ray-to-X-ray flux ratio show a strong harder-when-brighter behavior. In addition, gamma-ray-emitting RGs with soft gamma-ray spectral index tend to have a hard X-ray spectral index and vice versa. Based on these properties, we imply a trend that gamma-ray-emitting RGs could be roughly classified into three types of X-ray emission: jet-dominated type, disk/corona-dominated type, and intermediate type. This classification is quite consistent with the optical and radio classification of RGs. In addition, we also discuss this result in terms of the Eddington luminosity ratio. Radio galaxies have long been considered as potential sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Recent analyses of the UHECR spectrum, composition, and arrival directions indicate that the nearest radio galaxy, Centaurus A, could be linked to the reported dipole anisotropy, though the mechanism underlying the acceleration remains elusive. In this Letter, we explore UHECR acceleration in the kiloparsec-scale jets of radio galaxies, exemplified by Centaurus A. Using high-resolution relativistic magnetohydrodynamic and test-particle simulations without subgrid physics, we investigate the acceleration of the highest-energy particles in the turbulent sheath of a fast-moving jet. Our findings demonstrate that acceleration close to the maximum theoretical expectation is possible. When extrapolated to nearby radio galaxies, our results suggest that the kiloparsec-scale jets of Centaurus A could account for the dipole anisotropy in UHECRs, while more potent Fanaroff–Riley type II radio galaxies may account for the observed UHECR spectrum with a rigidity cutoff at a few Exavolts.

A novel deep-learning paradigm for synthesis imaging by radio interferometry in astronomy was recently proposed, dubbed “Residual-to-Residual DNN series for high-Dynamic range imaging” (R2D2). In this work, we start by shedding light on R2D2's algorithmic structure, interpreting it as a learned version of CLEAN with minor cycles substituted with a deep neural network (DNN) whose training is iteration-specific. We then proceed with R2D2's first demonstration on real data, for monochromatic intensity imaging of the radio galaxy Cygnus A from S -band observations with the Very Large Array. We show that the modeling power of R2D2's learning approach enables delivering high-precision imaging, superseding the resolution of CLEAN, and matching the precision of modern optimization and plug-and-play algorithms, respectively uSARA and AIRI. Requiring few major-cycle iterations only, R2D2 provides a much faster reconstruction than uSARA and AIRI, known to be highly iterative, and is at least as fast as CLEAN.
