Real‐time control will play an important role in the operation and scientific exploitation of the new generation fusion devices. This paper summarizes the real‐time systems and diagnostics developed by the Portuguese Fusion Euratom Association based on digital signal processors and field programmable gate arrays.

This paper proposes a new transient recorder (TR)-time digitizer (TD) hybrid system to be used to pull out higher performance of presently used techniques for measuring the collimated flux and the spectrum of the neutron emission from fusion plasmas of either deuterium or deuterium-tritium, as well as to apply to new neutron measuring techniques, with demanding specific requirements in plasma physics. This system is presented as a modular design, allowing up to four 200 MHz, 12 b acquisition channels to operate in an interleaved way, achieving 800 MHz. The module includes a XILINX FPGA and an ADC front-end along with a large memory storage capacity and unique TD capabilities (two channels with 36 ps resolution). The FPGA is able to perform real-time data validation as well as some processing algorithms to obtain physical parameters and module calibration. Processed data will be transferred to a control unit by a gigabit optical link. Signals that determine skeletal cell fate, function and apoptosis are critical to normal bone remodeling. Skeletal cells synthesize growth factors; some regulate cell replication, others regulate osteoblastic differentiation. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) and Wnts induce the differentiation of mesenchymal cells toward mature osteoblasts. The action of BMPs is regulated by extracellular antagonists. These often act by binding to BMPs and preventing their binding to cell surface receptors. Wnt is essential for osteoblastogenesis, and mutations of Wnt co-receptors are associated with changes in bone mass. Wnt activity, like BMPs, is regulated by extracellular and intracellular antagonists. Notch, a family of transmembrane receptors, opposes Wnt signaling and inhibits osteoblastic differentiation. BMP, Wnt and Notch play a central role in osteoblastic cell fate.

Fruit rots caused by distinct fungal pathogens are commonly observed on tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) throughout all major production areas in Brazil. Samples of fruits displaying white mycelial growth associated with a profuse salmon-color sporulation were collected in greenhouse-grown tomatoes in Brasília-DF in February 2011. The isolated fungus displayed pink-to-white colonies containing several conidiophores with conidia. Mycelia displayed hyaline hyphae as much as 4 μm in diameter; conidiophores were simple or branched, 112 to 300 (360) μm long, and 2 to 4 μm wide. Conidia were produced in basipetal chains (frequently clustered), were ellipsoidal to pyriform with oblique and prominent truncate basal scars, two-celled, hyaline, and (14-) 16 to 26 (-28) × (6-) 7 to 10 (-12) μm. These characteristics allocated the specimen to Trichothecium roseum (Pers.). Koch's postulates were fulfilled for one fungal isolate by either spraying 10 intact fruits or by placing a drop of a spore suspension (adjusted to 105 conidia/ml) into three to five wounds created on 10 mature fruits of each of two tomato cultivars (Santa Clara and Dominador) by puncturing each fruit with a sterile needle. Five fruits of each cultivar were treated with sterile water as the mock-inoculated control treatment. Identical symptoms to those of the original fruit were observed only in the T. roseum-inoculated samples 5 to 7 days after using both inoculation procedures. Total DNA was extracted from a pure colony of the fungus growing on potato dextrose agar medium and used as template in PCR assays with the internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-4 (5′-TCCTCCGCTTATTGATATGC-3′) and ITS-5 (5′-GGAAGTAAAAGTCGTAACAAGG-3′) primer pair (2). A single amplicon of approximately 630 bp was observed and directly sequenced. Sequence analysis of the Brazilian isolate (GenBank No. JN081877) indicated identity levels of 99% with T. roseum isolates reported on Leucadendron xanthoconus in South Africa (GenBank No. EU552162) and isolates from strawberry fruits in South Korea (GenBank No. HM355750). However, phylogenetic analysis was unable to discriminate isolates of T. roseum from Passalora (GenBank No. EF432764) and Fusarium (GenBank No. GU183369) isolates, confirming the low genetic variability of the ITS region in Hypocreales (3). T. roseum has been reported to be infecting greenhouse tomatoes in the United States (4) and causing postharvest disease of tomatoes in Argentina (1). [ Abstract ] An original, simple, specific, and rapid high-performance liquid chromatography assay for the determination of clofazimine in human plasma is presented. The procedure consists of extracting the drug and the internal standard (medazepam) from 0.5 mL plasma with dichloromethane/diisopropyl ether (1:1, v/v) at pH 3.0, after preciptating the proteins with methanol. The drugs were then quantitated on a reversed-phase C8 using a mobile phase consisting of a mixture of methanol/0.25N sodium acetate buffer at pH 3.0 (74:26, v/v). The flow-rate and wavelength were set at 1 mL/min and 286 nm, respectively. The precision, linearity, and limit of quantitation of the method were within acceptable limits. The method was considered adequate and could be applied in studies involving blood level monitoring and pharmacokinetics in leprosy patients.

The Optical Metrology Division of Inmetro – National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology has recently started the colorimetric characterization of lamps by implementing Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) and Color Rendering Index (CRI) measurements of incandescent lamps, followed by the CFL, and LED lamps and luminaires. Here we present the results for the verification of the color characterization of samples of SSL luminaires for public as well as indoor illumination that are sold in Brazil.

Nursing plays an important role in prevention and reduction of complications related to venous access. This study had the purpose to find complications derived from intravenous therapy. Major data were: 77.3% of the venous accesses were performed by auxiliary nursing; 68% of the procedures were performed without gloves; 60% of the accesses were not satisfactorily performed by nurses; 47% of the cannulae were "in situ" between 24 and 72 hours; among the complications, 20% were related to infiltration, 5.4% to infiltration and hematoma and 5.3% to obstruction. Data suggest the need to improve the education of the nursing team about intravenous therapy.

The current paper presents a large memory giving special emphasis to the architecture and suitability of the Linux OS for this type of applications. The system will be used on the joint european torus new correlation reflectometers composed by four microwave channels with four analogue signals each. All sixteen signals will be acquired by 12-bit VME fast acquisition channels at 2 Msamples/s achieving a total data rate of 60MB/s. Slower VME acquisition channels, with 16-bit resolution and sampling rates up to 250 ksamples/s, can also acquire these 16 signals. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) induce the differentiation of cells of the osteoblastic lineage and enhance the function of the osteoblast. Growth factor activity is regulated by binding proteins, and we previously showed that BMPs induce noggin, a glycoprotein that binds and blocks BMP action. Recently, additional BMP antagonists, such as gremlin, have been described, but there is no information about their expression or function in osteoblasts. We tested for the expression of gremlin and studied its induction by BMPs in cultures of osteoblast-enriched cells from 22-day-old fetal rat calvariae (Ob cells). BMP-2 caused a time- and dose-dependent increase in gremlin messenger RNA and polypeptide levels, as determined by Northern and Western blot analyses. The effects of BMP-2 on gremlin transcripts were independent of new protein synthesis. BMP-2 increased the rate of gremlin transcription as determined by nuclear run-on assays. Fibroblast growth factor-2 and platelet-derived growth factor BB also induced gremlin, but other hormones and growth factors had no effect. Gremlin prevented the stimulatory effects of BMP-2 on DNA, collagen, noncollagen protein synthesis, and alkaline phosphatase activity in Ob cells. In conclusion, BMPs induce gremlin transcription in Ob cells, a mechanism that probably limits BMP action in osteoblasts.

PTH induces the synthesis of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and regulates the expression of IGF-binding proteins (IGFBP) in osteoblast cultures. IGFBP-related protein-1 (IGFBP-RP-1), the product of the mac25 gene, binds IGF-I, IGF-II, and insulin. We tested the actions of PTH on the expression of mac25/IGFBP-RP-1 in cultures of osteoblast-enriched cells from 22-day-old fetal rat calvariae (Ob cells). PTH at 0.1-10 nM for 6-48 h increased mac25/IGFBP-RP-1 messenger RNA (mRNA) levels in Ob cells, an effect not altered by cycloheximide. PGE2 increased mac25/IGFBP-RP-1 mRNA levels, but indomethacin did not modify basal or PTH-stimulated mac25/IGFBP-RP-1 expression. The decay of mac25/IGFBP-RP-1 mRNA in transcriptionally arrested Ob cells was not modified by PTH, and PTH increased the rate of IGFBP-RP-1 transcription. GH, insulin, bone morphogenetic protein-2, fibroblast growth factor-2, platelet-derived growth factor BB, IGF-I, and IGF-II did not modify mac25/IGFBP-RP-1 expression, whereas transforming growth factor-beta1 was modestly stimulatory. In conclusion, PTH stimulates mac25/IGFBP-RP-1 transcription in osteoblasts, an effect that could be relevant to the actions of PTH in bone.

Glucocorticoids inhibit the synthesis of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and regulate the expression of IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) in osteoblast cultures. IGFBP-related protein-1 (IGFBP-rP1), the product of the mac25 gene, binds IGF-I, IGF-II, and insulin, and we postulated that glucocorticoids regulate IGFBP-rP1 synthesis in osteoblasts. We tested the expression of mac25/IGFBP-rP1 in cultures of osteoblast-enriched cells from 22-day-old fetal rat calvariae (Ob cells). Cortisol treatment at 10 nM to 1 microM for 24-48 h caused a time- and dose-dependent increase in mac25/IGFBP-rP1 messenger RNA (mRNA) levels in Ob cells. Cycloheximide at 3.6 microM did not alter mac25/IGFBP-rP1 transcripts in control or cortisol-treated cells. Cortisol did not modify the decay of mac25/IGFBP-rP1 mRNA in transcriptionally arrested Ob cells and increased the rate of IGFBP-rP1 transcription as determined by nuclear run-on assays. Retinoic acid also increased mac25/IGFBP-rP1 mRNA levels, but 17beta-estradiol, testosterone, 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone, progesterone, and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 did not. In conclusion, cortisol stimulates mac25/IGFBP-rP1 expression in Ob cells by transcriptional mechanisms. As IGFBP-rP1 binds and possibly modifies the effects of IGFs and insulin, its increased expression could be relevant to the inhibitory actions of cortisol in bone.

Several studies, mainly in temperate regions, have shown that the polyphenols of brown seaweeds (Phaeophy- ceae) are responsible for chemical defense against herbivores. In the present work, we tested the susceptibility of 4 species of tropical seaweeds from Buzios, Southern Brazil to herbivory by the amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis Dana, and also analysed the effect of different concentrations of polyphenols from Sargassum furcatum Kutzing as a defense against this amphipod. Sargassum furcatum exhibited low levels of polyphenols, consistent with previous observations from other tropical regions, and the natural levels of phenols found in this alga did not inhibited herbivory by Parhyale hawaiensis. On the other hand, high levels of the polyphenols extracted from Sargassum furcatum and the phloroglucinol monomer of the polyphenols inhibited this amphi- pod. The results obtained reveal that phenolic compounds could be used as an effective defense, but for unknown reasons they are not produced in high quantities by southern Brazilian brown seaweeds, as they are in other regions of the Pacific Ocean.

Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV) and Tomato infectious chlorosis virus (TICV) are the two Solanaceae-infecting Crinivirus species (family Closteroviridae) of worldwide importance. In Brazil, only ToCV has been detected under natural conditions infecting tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum), and potato (S. tuberosum), causing foliar chlorosis (1, 3). However, there are no formal reports of alternative weed hosts of ToCV. During crop surveys in Capão Bonito, São Paulo State, Brazil (May 2011), a high incidence (above 20%) of plants of the weed, cut leaf ground cherry (Physalis angulata L.) growing around and within a tomato (cv. Alambra) field with a high incidence of ToCV, were found displaying interveinal chlorosis on the lower leaves, similar to those induced by magnesium deficiency. The P. angulata plants also had high populations of whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci biotype B). Ten leaf samples were taken from individual symptomatic ground cherry and tomato plants for Crinivirus testing. Total nucleic acids were extracted from 2 g of symptomatic and healthy leaf tissues of both hosts using Whatman CF-11 cellulose (Sigma) as described (4). The purified double stranded RNA samples were used as a template in reverse transcription (RT)-PCR using specific primers targeting the p22 gene region in the genome of ToCV (2). Only the 566-bp ToCV-specific amplicon was detected in all field samples. Sequences of samples from the P. angulata and tomato cDNA amplicons were identical to each other (GenBank Accession No. JX187514) and they showed 99% identity with the ToCV RNA 1 from a tomato isolate from Florida (AY903447). This confirmed the initial hypothesis of Crinivirus infection. Cuttings of symptomatic P. angulata plants were also obtained and kept in a voile cage under greenhouse conditions together with healthy seedlings of P. angulata and the begomovirus-resistant inbred tomato line ‘TX-468RG.’ Fifty aviruliferous B. tabaci (biotype B) adults were placed in the cage. Similar symptoms were observed 50 days after exposure to whiteflies in both hosts. Transmission to P. angulata and to ‘TX-468RG’ was also confirmed via sequencing of ToCV-specific amplicon, demonstrating the infectivity of the isolate to both hosts. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. angulata as a natural host of ToCV in Brazil. This weed is often present in the commercial fields because of its natural tolerance to herbicides currently used in tomato production. The ToCV-infected P. angulata plants might serve as alternative sources of inoculum for the surrounding tomato fields. The environmental persistence of P. angulata combined with its intense whitefly colonization might allow a year-round ToCV exposure for tomato plants under field conditions in this major production area of Brazil where at least 25 million tomato plants are cultivated annually. High-resolution γ-ray measurements were carried out on the Joint European Torus (JET) in an experiment aimed at accelerating 4He ions in the MeV range by coupling third harmonic radio frequency heating to an injected 4He beam. For the first time, Doppler broadening of γ-ray peaks from the 12C(d, pγ)13C and 9Be(α, nγ)12C reactions was observed and interpreted with dedicated Monte Carlo codes based on the detailed nuclear physics of the processes. Information on the confined 4He and deuteron energy distribution was inferred, and confined 4He ions with energies as high as 6 MeV were assessed. A signature of MHD activity in γ-ray traces was also detected. The reported results have a bearing on diagnostics for fast ions in the MeV range in next step fusion devices.

This article is about some theoretical assumptions that have guided health promotion and disease prevention strategies. Some questions are raised in relation to the professional's interventions that consider health promotion as an individual responsibility. It is suggested that the focus should be on social changes through the professionals' consciousness in social, political, behavioral and economic aspects that exert influences over the population's health. These ideas ought to be incorporated to the nurse-client interaction.

The aim of this article is to offer an overview about the applicability of critical thinking to nursing education and nursing practice. Following, Brookfiels's (1987) model is applied to nursing situations.

We consider the Euclidean D-dimensional N-component λ|φ|4 (λ>0) model with d (d≤D) compactified dimensions. Introducing temperature by means of the Ginzburg–Landau prescription in the mass term of the Hamiltonian, this model can be interpreted as describing a second-order phase transition for a system in a region of the D-dimensional space, limited by d pairs of parallel planes, orthogonal to the coordinates axis x1,x2,…,xd. The planes in each pair are separated by distances L1,L2,…,Ld. Making the appropriate boundary corrections to the coupling constant, we obtain in the large-N limit the transition temperature as a function of the size of the system, Tc({Li}), i=1,2,…,d. For D=3 we particularize this formula, taking L1=L2=⋯=Ld=L for the physically interesting cases d=1 (a film), d=2 (an infinitely long wire having a square cross section), and d=3 (a cubic grain).

The MPRu is an upgrade of the magnetic proton recoil (MPR) neutron spectrometer that has been used for 14 MeV DT neutron measurements at JET during the DTE1 (1997) and TTE (2003) campaigns. In this contribution the principles of the MPR and its upgrade will be presented. The MPRu allows measurements of the full range of fusion relevant neutron energies, 1.5-18 MeV, including the 14 MeV DT neutrons, now with significantly reduced background, and also new high-quality measurements of the 2.5 MeV DD neutron component. This improvement is made possible by the use of a new proton recoil detector in combination with custom-built transient recorder cards. The importance of these instrumental improvements for extending the use of the MPRu in diagnosis of D and DT plasmas will be discussed. Results from the first 2.5 MeV measurements performed with the MPRu during JET high level commissioning in April 2006 are presented. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

The effects of initial morphology and extrusion temperature on the orientational anisotropy and conformational changes on coextrusion drawing of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) have been determined by Fourier-transform polarized infrared spectroscopy. The samples were drawn from both amorphous and semicrystalline (50%) PET at 50 and 90°C. A strong influence of coextrusion drawing temperature was observed for overall chain orientation evaluated from the dichroic ratio of the 795-cm−1 band for the samples prepared from the amorphous state: this dependence was less prominent in samples drawn from the semicrystalline state. Under the same drawing conditions, the dichroic ratio for the 973-cm−1trans band for samples prepared from the amorphous state was higher than from the semicrystalline state. Furthermore, in all samples, the relative intensity of this band was almost proportional to the degree of crystallinity. In all samples, the gauche content, evaluated from the 896-cm−1 band, decreased with increasing draw ratio. However, the dichroic ratio of this band was near unity regardless of draw ratio, initial morphology, or extrusion temperature. From these results it is considered that all gauche units in the amorphous phase are almost isotropic in the extrusion-drawn samples with overall orientation arising largely from the crystalline chains possessing totally the trans conformation (973 cm−1) in its content. In order to evaluate the deformation mechanism of the coextrusion drawing method, the relationship between the bulk and film surface orientation is also reported.

A series of uniaxially drawn films has been prepared from isotropic, amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) by using solid-state coextrusion below its Tg. To evaluating the crystallization behavior of the coextrudates, the cold-crystallization temperature Tc, Crystallization rate constant k, and activation energy Ea have been studied as a function of extrusion draw temperature and draw ratio. The rapid crystallization of highly oriented amorphous PET in extrudates was followed by a temperature-programmed DSC technique. This avoids the marked precrystallization often found in samples brought to appropriate isothermal temperatures. With increasing extrusion draw ratio, Tc shifts to lower temperatures, the first-order crystallization rate constant k increases markedly (by two or three orders of magnitude) and Ea decreases markedly. For undrawn samples annealing at temperatures below or near Tg (50–70°C) does not lead to crystallization, but with increased annealing temperature both Tc and Ea decrease. In contrast, for extrusion-drawn PET, both Tc and Ea increase with draw temperature. All these features are consistent with our previous correlations with molecular draw ratio and birefringence.

Upgrade of the Magnetic Proton Recoil (MPRu) spectrometer for 1.5-18 MeV neutrons for JET and the next step

A new multichannel frequency modulated continuous-wave reflectometry diagnostic has been successfully installed and commissioned on ASDEX Upgrade to measure the plasma edge electron density profile evolution in front of the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF) antenna. The design of the new three-strap ICRF antenna integrates ten pairs (sending and receiving) of microwave reflectometry antennas. The multichannel reflectometer can use three of these to measure the edge electron density profiles up to 2 × 1019 m-3, at different poloidal locations, allowing the direct study of the local plasma layers in front of the ICRF antenna. ICRF power coupling, operational effects, and poloidal variations of the plasma density profile can be consistently studied for the first time. In this work the diagnostic hardware architecture is described and the obtained density profile measurements were used to track outer radial plasma position and plasma shape. © 2016 EURATOM.

Controlled nuclear fusion aims to obtain energy by particles collision confined inside a nuclear reactor (Tokamak). These ionized particles, heavier isotopes of hydrogen, are the main elements inside of plasma that is kept at high temperatures (millions of Celsius degrees). Due to high temperatures and magnetic confinement, plasma is exposed to several sources of instabilities which require a set of procedures by the control and data acquisition systems throughout fusion experiments processes. Control and data acquisition systems often used in nuclear fusion experiments are based on the Advanced Telecommunication Computer Architecture (AdvancedTCA®) standard introduced by the Peripheral Component Interconnect Industrial Manufacturers Group (PICMG®), to meet the demands of telecommunications that require large amount of data (TB) transportation at high transfer rates (Gb/s), to ensure high availability including features such as reliability, serviceability and redundancy. For efficient plasma control, systems are required to collect large amounts of data, process it, store for later analysis, make critical decisions in real time and provide status reports either from the experience itself or the electronic instrumentation involved. Moreover, systems should also ensure the correct handling of detected anomalies and identified faults, notify the system operator of occurred events, decisions taken to acknowledge and implemented changes. Therefore, for everything to work in compliance with specifications it is required that the instrumentation includes hardware management and monitoring mechanisms for both hardware and software. These mechanisms should check the system status by reading sensors, manage events, update inventory databases with hardware system components in use and maintenance, store collected information, update firmware and installed software modules, configure and handle alarms to detect possible system failures and prevent emergency scenarios occurrences. The goal is to ensure high availability of the system and provide safety operation, experiment security and data validation for the fusion experiment. This work aims to contribute to the joint effort of the IPFN control and data acquisition group to develop a hardware management and monitoring application for control and data acquisition instrumentation especially designed for large scale tokamaks like ITER.

O objetivo do trabalho foi identificar endossimbiontes em populações de B. tabaci de vários locais e plantas hospedeiras.

The texture of corn grains is a fundamental characteristic for the industry as well as for grain producers and processors. To further understand the mechanisms involved in grain hardness, contrasting com cultivars for grain hardness and protein quality were evaluated. The cultivars were Cateto L237/67 (hard endosperm and low protein value), QPM BR 451 (semi-hard endosperm and high protein value); Bolivia-2 (floury endosperm and low protein value), and Opaque-2 (floury endosperm and high protein value). Evaluations were carried out at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 days after pollination in developing com grains and in the mature grain. In developing grains, evaluation consisted in the determination of the area, percentage of starch granules, distribution of starch granules, and protein bodies in the endosperm. In mature com grains, the parameters evaluated were: density, percentage oftotal proteins, levels of Iysine and tryptophan, and banding pattem of zeins. The results indicate that the higher physical resistance of com grains from the cultivars analyzed is influenced by the high percentage oftotal pro-teins, high synthesis of 27-kDa zeins, presence of protein bodies, and perfect organization of starch granules in the endosperm, inde-pendent of their sizes.
