SummaryInhibition of trypsin and chy-motrypsin by plasma has been studied using ester substrates. The amount of inhibition measured was low compared to that reported in the literature using protein substrates, and permitted the measurement of enzyme concentrations in plasma of the order of 10 μg/ ml. Intravenous injection of trypsin and chymotrypsin to rabbits resulted in measurable circulating esterase activity, which persisted, in the case of chymotrypsin, up to an hour after injection. No activity was detected following intramuscular trypsin, however, and no detectable increase over a small spontaneous esterase activity was noted following intramuscular chymotrypsin. Thus, it appears that the anti-inflammatory effect noted following intramuscular injection of these enzymes is probably not mediated by their systemic absorption.

A lumped mass model was used to represent the impact condition between a fuel duct and an IVHM in-vessel fuel handling machine. The nonlinear effects of a Bellville spring and the free fall impact of the fuel duct on the IVHM were included. The purpose of the tests was to determine the loads on the fuel duct due to the impact. A comparison between experimental and theoretical results is presented.

‘Hull Thornless’ (Rubus sp., is a vigorous and productive thornless blackberry cultivar with firm, sweet, fruit. It is named for the late John W. (Jack) Hull, formerly of the University of Maryland, the University of Arkansas, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, who spent most of his life breeding blackberries and raspberries. ‘Hull Thornless’ is the fifth in a series of tetraploid, genetically thornless blackberry hybrids developed by the USDA and cooperating agencies (4). It is adapted principally to USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6-8.

THAT d-tubocurarine (DTC) is convulsant when applied topically to the cerebral cortex has been known for many years but the mechanism of its action is still unclear1–3. Other neuromuscular blocking drugs such as gallamine, decamethonium and dihydro-β-erythroidine do not have this convulsive property4 and the usual comparison is with known convulsants such as picrotoxin and strychnine1,4,5. This suggests that different receptors to those in the periphery are involved in the convulsive action of DTC and it is possible that the central receptors with which DTC interacts may be those mediating cortical inhibitory processes. Blockade of these receptors would result in uncontrolled excitation and lead to paroxysmal discharges. As γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is now thought to be the cortical inhibitory transmitter6, we have examined the interactions of DTC and GABA, applying both substances by microiontophoresis. In addition we have studied the effects of microiontophoretically applied DTC on the inhibition of cortical neurones produced by direct shocks to the adjacent cortical surface7,8 and we have also compared DTC with other convulsants applied to the same neurones, from the same pipette.

Ohio ranks sixth in population in the U.S. with 57% of the total U.S. expenditures for food made within a 600-mile radius of Columbus. Because of Ohio’s high population density, many of the horticultural industries have capitalized upon their nearness to market. The development of garden centers, as well as retail fruit and vegetable markets with a recreational atmosphere, have become commonplace.
