Abstract

Summary: Growth‐related traits are important economic traits in the pig industry that directly influence pork production efficiency. To detect quantitative trait loci and candidate genes affecting growth traits, genome‐wide association studies were performed for backfat thickness (BF) and loin muscle depth (LMD) in 370 Chuying‐black pigs using Illumina PorcineSNP50 BeadChip array. We totally identified 14 BF‐associated SNPs, which included 11 genome‐wide SNPs (P < 1.39E‐06) and 3 chromosome‐wide suggestive SNPs (P < 2.79E‐05) and for LMD, 9 SNPs surpassed the genome‐wide significant threshold (P < 1.39E‐06). These SNPs explained 30.33 and 27.51% phenotypic variance for BF and LMD respectively. Furthermore, 14 and 9 genes nearest to the significant SNPs were selected to be candidate genes, including MAGED1, GPHN, CCSER1, and GUCY2D for BF and PARM1, COL18A1, HSF5, and SCML2 genes for LMD. One significant SNP, which explained 6.07% of phenotypic variance for BF, mapped to a pleiotropic quantitative trait locus with a 494‐kb interval. Together, the SNPs and candidate genes identified in this study will advance our understanding of the complex genetic architecture of BF and LMD traits, and they will also provide important clues for future implementation of a genomic selection program in Chuying‐black pigs. Abstract

Hyperthermia, the mild elevation of temperature to 40-43°C, can induce cancer cell death and enhance the effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, achievement of its full potential as a clinically relevant treatment modality has been restricted by its inability to effectively and preferentially heat malignant cells. The limited spatial resolution may be circumvented by the intravenous administration of cancer-targeting magnetic nanoparticles that accumulate in the tumor, followed by the application of an alternating magnetic field to raise the temperature of the nanoparticles located in the tumor tissue. This targeted approach enables preferential heating of malignant cancer cells whilst sparing the surrounding normal tissue, potentially improving the effectiveness and safety of hyperthermia. Despite promising results in preclinical studies, there are numerous challenges that must be addressed before this technique can progress to the clinic. This review discusses these challenges and highlights the current understanding of targeted magnetic hyperthermia.

Abstract

Tumour progression allows for aberrant angiogenesis. Consequently, cancer‐associated thrombosis is a prevalent complication that is coupled with poor prognosis. Anticoagulants have therefore been prescribed with chemotherapeutic agents to target potential thrombo‐embolic risk. A systematic review was carried out to summarise existing evidence on the interactions between anticoagulants and oral cancer. This treatment paradigm has demonstrated beneficial results in some oncology patients, thus associating anticoagulants with anticancer effects. Increasing prevalence of oral cancer presents a need to source alternative therapeutic means to prevent disease progression, and thus the use of anticoagulants in these patients may provide an avenue for this to occur. The paucity of evidence regarding the interactions between oral squamous cell carcinoma and anticoagulants emphasises the urgency with which further research should be conducted. Abstract

A family of wide-band-gap ternary oxide ferromagnetic semiconductor films with high transition metal concentration was prepared. The resistivity of these films can be changed up to four orders of magnitude by varying the composition or the concentration of the oxygen vacancies. Moreover, all these films show common features in electrical transport, i.e., Mott variable range hopping (VRH) in the lower resistivity range, Efros VRH in the middle resistivity range, and “hard gap” resistance in the higher resistivity range. The above phenomena are well understood by considering the relative magnitude of three characterization lengths, i.e., Coulomb screening length, localization length of the carriers, and optimal hopping distance. Furthermore, spin polarization ratio of these magnetic semiconductors was obtained by fitting the experimental results of electrical transport. Therefore, the wide gap oxide ferromagnetic semiconductors with controllable spin-polarized electrical transport are expected to have application in spintronics devices as a spin injection source. Abstract

We report on the mesoscopic simulation of heat conduction in nanoparticle suspensions (nanofluids) by using the energy-conserving dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method. Through coarse graining, our simulations probe the thermal and momentum transport in nanofluids at a length scale much greater than that in atomistic methods. We show that our simulations model the fluctuating hydrodynamics in nanofluids in a thermodynamically self-consistent manner, which is critical for resolving the current controversies on mechanisms of heat conduction in nanofluids. Simulation results indicate that the Brownian motion of nanoparticles plays a negligible role in determining the thermal conductivity of nanofluids at least within the framework of fluctuating hydrodynamics at mesoscales. 121. Ion concentrations and velocity profiles in nanochannel electroosmotic flows.

Abstract

Ion distributions and velocity profiles for electroosmotic flow in nanochannels of different widths are studied in this paper using molecular dynamics and continuum theory. For the various channel widths studied in this paper, the ion distribution near the channel wall is strongly influenced by the finite size of the ions and the discreteness of the solvent molecules. The classical Poisson-Boltzmann equation fails to predict the ion distribution near the channel wall as it does not account for the molecular aspects of the ion-wall and ion-solvent interactions. A modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation based on electrochemical potential correction is introduced to account for ion-wall and ion-solvent interactions. The electrochemical potential correction term is extracted from the ion distribution in a smaller channel using molecular dynamics. Using the electrochemical potential correction term extracted from molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of electroosmotic flow in a 2.22 nm channel, the modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation predicts the ion distribution in larger channel widths (e.g., 3.49 and 10.00 nm) with good accuracy. Detailed studies on the velocity profile in electro-osmotic flow indicate that the continuum flow theory can be used to predict bulk fluid flow in channels as small as 2.22 nm provided that the viscosity variation near the channel wall is taken into account. We propose a technique to embed the velocity near the channel wall obtained from MD simulation of electroosmotic flow in a narrow channel (e.g., 2.22 nm wide channel) into simulation of electroosmotic flow in larger channels. Simulation results indicate that such an approach can predict the velocity profile in larger channels (e.g., 3.49 and 10.00 nm) very well. Finally, simulation of electroosmotic flow in a 0.95 nm channel indicates that viscosity cannot be described by a local, linear constitutive relationship that the continuum flow theory is built upon and thus the continuum flow... 122. Bivalence Mn 5 O 8 with hydroxylated interphase for high-voltage aqueous sodium-ion storage

Abstract

© The Author(s) 2016. Aqueous electrochemical energy storage devices have attracted significant attention owing to their high safety, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, their applications have been limited by a narrow potential window (1/41.23 V), beyond which the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions occur. Here we report the formation of layered Mn 5 O 8 pseudocapacitor electrode material with a well-ordered hydroxylated interphase. A symmetric full cell using such electrodes demonstrates a stable potential window of 3.0 V in an aqueous electrolyte, as well as high energy and power performance, nearly 100% coulombic efficiency and 85% energy efficiency after 25,000 charge-discharge cycles. The interplay between hydroxylated interphase on the surface and the unique bivalence structure of Mn 5 O 8 suppresses the gas evolution reactions, offers a two-electron charge transfer via Mn 2+ /Mn 4+ redox couple, and provides facile pathway for Na-ion transport via intra-/inter-layer defects of Mn 5 O 8.

123. Oxygen vacancies controlled multiple magnetic phases in epitaxial single crystal Co0.5(Mg0.55Zn0.45)0.5O1-vthin films

Abstract

High quality single-crystal fcc-Cox(MgyZn1-y)1-xO1-vepitaxial thin films with high Co concentration up to x = 0.5 have been fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy. Systematic magnetic property characterization and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis indicate that the coexistence of ferromagnetic regions, superparamagnetic clusters, and non-magnetic boundaries in the as-prepared Co x (MgyZn1-y)1-xO1-vfilms is a consequence of the intrinsic inhomogeneous distribution of oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, the relative strength of multiple phases could be modulated by controlling the oxygen partial pressure during sample preparation. Armed with both controllable magnetic properties and tunable band-gap, Cox(MgyZn1-y)1-xO1-vfilms may have promising applications in future spintronics.

126. Direct Experimental Probe of the Ni(II)/Ni(III)/Ni(IV) Redox Evolution in LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4Electrodes

Abstract

© 2015 American Chemical Society. The LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4spinel is an appealing cathode material for next generation rechargeable Li-ion batteries due to its high operating voltage of ∼4.7 V (vs Li/Li+). Although it is widely believed that the full range of electrochemical cycling involves the redox of Ni(II)/(IV), it has not been experimentally clarified whether Ni(III) exists as the intermediate state or a double-electron transfer takes place. Here, combined with theoretical calculations, we show unambiguous spectroscopic evidence of the Ni(III) state when the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4electrode is half charged. This provides a direct verification of single-electron-transfer reactions in LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4upon cycling, namely, from Ni(II) to Ni(III), then to Ni(IV). Additionally, by virtue of its surface sensitivity, soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy also reveals the electrochemically inactive Ni2+and Mn2+phases on the electrode surface. Our work provides the long-awaited clarification of the single-electron transfer mechanism in LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4electrodes. Furthermore, the experimental results serve as a benchmark for further spectroscopic characterizations of Ni-based battery electrodes.

Abstract

Summary: Pig umbilical hernia (UH) affects pig welfare and brings considerable economic loss to the pig industry. To date, the molecular mechanisms underlying pig UH are still poorly understood. To identify potential loci for susceptibility to this disease, we performed a genome‐wide association study in an Erhualian × Shaziling F2 intercross population. A total of 45 animals were genotyped using Illumina Porcine SNP60 BeadChips. We observed a SNP (rs80993347) located in the calpain‐9 (CAPN9) gene on Sus scrofa chromosome 14 that was significantly associated with UH (P = 1.97 × 10−10). Then, we identified a synonymous mutation rs321865883 (g.20164T>C) in exon 10 of the CAPN9 gene that distinguished two affected individuals (CC) from their normal full‐sibs (TC). Finally, quantitative polymerase chain reaction was explored to investigate the mRNA expression profile of the CAPN9 gene in 12 tissues in Yorkshire pigs at different developmental stages (3, 90 and 180 days). CAPN9 showed high expression levels in the gastrointestinal tract at these three growth stages. The results of this study indicate that the CAPN9 gene might be implicated in UH. Further studies are required to establish a role of CAPN9 in pig UH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We describe the performance of the Boolardy Engineering Test Array (BETA), the prototype for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope ASKAP. BETA is the first aperture synthesis radio telescope to use phased array feed technology, giving it the ability to electronically form up to nine dual-polarization beams. We report the methods developed for forming and measuring the beams, and the adaptations that have been made to the traditional calibration and imaging procedures in order to allow BETA to function as a multi-beam aperture synthesis telescope. We describe the commissioning of the instrument and present details of BETA's performance: sensitivity, beam characteristics, polarimetric properties and image quality. We summarise the astronomical science that it has produced and draw lessons from operating BETA that will be relevant to the commissioning and operation of the final ASKAP telescope., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASA

Abstract

The Boolardy Engineering Test Array is a 6 x 12 m dish interferometer and the prototype of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), equipped with the first generation of ASKAP's phased array feed (PAF) receivers. These facilitate rapid wide-area imaging via the deployment of simultaneous multiple beams within a 30 square degree field of view. By cycling the array through 12 interleaved pointing positions and using 9 digitally formed beams we effectively mimic a traditional 1 hour x 108 pointing survey, covering 150 square degrees over 711 - 1015 MHz in 12 hours of observing time. Three such observations were executed over the course of a week. We verify the full bandwidth continuum imaging performance and stability of the system via self-consistency checks and comparisons to existing radio data. The combined three epoch image has arcminute resolution and a 1-sigma thermal noise level of 375 micro-Jy per beam, although the effective noise is a factor 3 higher due to residual sidelobe confusion. From this we derive a catalogue of 3,722 discrete radio components, using the 35 percent fractional bandwidth to measure in-band spectral indices for 1,037 of them. A search for transient events reveals one significantly variable source within the survey area. The survey covers approximately two-thirds of the Spitzer South Pole Telescope Deep Field. This pilot project demonstrates the viability and potential of using PAFs to rapidly and accurately survey the sky at radio wavelengths., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. Abstract

Prussian Blue analogues (PBAs) have shown promise as electrode materials for grid-scale batteries because of their high cycle life and rapid kinetics in aqueous-based electrolytes. However, these materials suffer from relatively low specific capacity, which may limit their practical applications. Here, we investigate strategies to improve the specific capacity of these materials while maintaining their cycling stability and elucidate mechanisms that enhance their electrochemical properties. In particular, we have studied the electrochemical and structural properties of manganese hexacyanoferrate (MnHCFe) and cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCFe) in an aqueous, sodium-ion electrolyte. We also studied manganese-cobalt hexacyanoferrate (Mn-CoHCFe) solid solutions with different Mn/Co ratios that combine properties of both MnHCFe and CoHCFe. The materials have the characteristic open-framework crystal structure of PBAs, and their specific capacities can be significantly improved by electrochemically cycling (oxidizing and reducing) both the carbon-coordinated Fe and the nitrogen-coordinated Co or Mn ions. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies and ex situ soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with an in-depth electrochemical characterization provide insight into the different electrochemical properties associated with the Fe, Co, and Mn redox couples. We show that cycling the C-coordinated Fe preserves the crystal structure and enables the outstanding kinetics and cycle life previously displayed by PBAs in aqueous electrolytes. On the other hand, the N-coordinated Co and Mn ions exhibit a slower kinetic regime due to structural distortions resulting from the weak N-coordinated crystal field, but they still contribute significantly towards increasing the specific capacity of the materials. These results provide the understanding needed to drive future development of PBAs for grid-scale applications that require extremely high cycle life and kinetics.

Abstract

We use observations from the Boolardy Engineering Test Array (BETA) of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope to search for transient radio sources in the field around the intermittent pulsar PSR J1107-5907. The pulsar is thought to switch between an "off" state in which no emission is detectable, a weak state and a strong state. We ran three independent transient detection pipelines on two-minute snapshot images from a 13 hour BETA observation in order to 1) study the emission from the pulsar, 2) search for other transient emission from elsewhere in the image and 3) to compare the results from the different transient detection pipelines. The pulsar was easily detected as a transient source and, over the course of the observations, it switched into the strong state three times giving a typical timescale between the strong emission states of 3.7 hours. After the first switch it remained in the strong state for almost 40 minutes. The other strong states lasted less than 4 minutes. The second state change was confirmed using observations with the Parkes radio telescope. No other transient events were found and we place constraints on the surface density of such events on these timescales. The high sensitivity Parkes observations enabled us to detect individual bright pulses during the weak state and to study the strong state over a wide observing band. We conclude by showing that future transient surveys with ASKAP will have the potential to probe the intermittent pulsar population.

Abstract

An emerging technology in the area of microsystems is micro-total analysis systems ([micro]TAS) for biological sample analysis. We have simulated electro-osmosis--a common transport mechanism within these devices--by developing meshless techniques. Numerical simulation of electro-osmotic transport requires the solution of the Laplace equation, the Poisson-Boltzmann equation and the incompressible Stokes or Navier-Stokes equations. We describe the development and implementation of meshless techniques for all the governing equations. In particular, we introduce a stabilized Stokes solver for very-low Reynolds number flows and a multistep Navier-Stokes solver for a wide range of Reynolds number flows. We have analyzed electro-osmotic transport in three geometries typically encountered in biological devices: a straight channel, a cross-shaped intersection, and a T-shaped intersection. Abstract

International audience; We used 3108 Earth-based astrometric observations from the Natural Satellite Data Center (NSDC) over more than 30 years time span from 1975 to 2006 for determining the epoch state vectors of the Neptunes largest satellite Triton. In integrating the perturbation equation, the barycentric frame of Neptune-Triton system is adopted, and in considering the oblateness perturbation due to Neptune, a revised pole model describing the precession of the Neptune's pole is used in our calculation. Moreover, a total of 1095 new observed positions of Triton were collected during 46 nights of observations in 2007, 2008 and 2009. We compared our observations to two ephemerides of Triton and most of the available planetary ephemerides of Neptune.

Abstract

We use observations from the Boolardy Engineering Test Array (BETA) of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope to search for transient radio sources in the field around the intermittent pulsar PSR J1107-5907. The pulsar is thought to switch between an "off" state in which no emission is detectable, a weak state and a strong state. We ran three independent transient detection pipelines on two-minute snapshot images from a 13 hour BETA observation in order to 1) study the emission from the pulsar, 2) search for other transient emission from elsewhere in the image and 3) to compare the results from the different transient detection pipelines. The pulsar was easily detected as a transient source and, over the course of the observations, it switched into the strong state three times giving a typical timescale between the strong emission states of 3.7 hours. After the first switch it remained in the strong state for almost 40 minutes. The other strong states lasted less than 4 minutes. The second state change was confirmed using observations with the Parkes radio telescope. No other transient events were found and we place constraints on the surface density of such events on these timescales. The high sensitivity Parkes observations enabled us to detect individual bright pulses during the weak state and to study the strong state over a wide observing band.
