Background Existing studies on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) often focus on individual‐level behavioral risk factors, but research examining social determinants is limited. This study applies a novel machine learning approach to identify the key predictors of county‐level care costs and prevalence of CVDs (including atrial fibrillation, acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and ischemic heart disease). Methods and Results We applied the extreme gradient boosting machine learning approach to a total of 3137 counties. Data are from the Interactive Atlas of Heart Disease and Stroke and a variety of national data sets. We found that although demographic composition (eg, percentages of Black people and older adults) and risk factors (eg, smoking and physical inactivity) are among the most important predictors for inpatient care costs and CVD prevalence, contextual factors such as social vulnerability and racial and ethnic segregation are particularly important for the total and outpatient care costs. Poverty and income inequality are the major contributors to the total care costs for counties that are in nonmetro areas or have high segregation or social vulnerability levels. Racial and ethnic segregation is particularly important in shaping the total care costs for counties with low poverty rates or social vulnerability level. Demographic composition, education, and social vulnerability are consistently important across different scenarios. Conclusions The findings highlight the differences in predictors for different types of CVD cost outcomes and the importance of social determinants. Interventions directed toward areas that have been economically and socially marginalized may aid in reducing the impact of CVDs.

Salt stress has become one of the main limiting factors affecting the normal growth and development of tomatoes as well as fruit quality and yields. To further reveal the regulatory relationships between tomato hormones under salt stress, the interaction between hormones and TF and the genome-wide gene interaction network were analyzed and constructed. After salt treatment, the levels of ABA, SA, and JA were significantly increased, the levels of GA were decreased, and IAA and tZ showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. The expression patterns of hormone biosynthesis and signal transduction related genes were analyzed based on RNA-seq analysis, the co-expression network of hormones and genome-wide co-expression networks were constructed using weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). The expression patterns of specific transcription factors under salt stress were also systematically analyzed and identified 20 hormone-related candidate genes associated with salt stress. In conclusion, we first revealed the relationship between hormones and genes in tomatoes under salt stress based on hormone and transcriptome expression profiles and constructed a gene regulatory network. A transcriptional regulation model of tomato consisted of six types of hormones was also proposed. Our study provided valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms regulating salt tolerance in tomatoes.

With the rapid development of computer technology, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in ophthalmology research has gained prominence in modern medicine. Artificial intelligence-related research in ophthalmology previously focused on the screening and diagnosis of fundus diseases, particularly diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Since fundus images are relatively fixed, their standards are easy to unify. Artificial intelligence research related to ocular surface diseases has also increased. The main issue with research on ocular surface diseases is that the images involved are complex, with many modalities. Therefore, this review aims to summarize current artificial intelligence research and technologies used to diagnose ocular surface diseases such as pterygium, keratoconus, infectious keratitis, and dry eye to identify mature artificial intelligence models that are suitable for research of ocular surface diseases and potential algorithms that may be used in the future.

Abstract Femtosecond laser machining of biomimetic micro/nanostructures with high aspect ratio (larger than 10) on ultrahard materials, such as sapphire, is a challenging task, because the uncontrollable surface damage usually results in poor surface structures, especially for deep scribing. Here, we report an inside-out femtosecond laser deep scribing technology in combination with etching process for fabricating bio-inspired micro/nanostructures with high-aspect-ratio on sapphire. To effectively avoid the uncontrollable damage at the solid/air interface, a sacrificial layer of silicon oxide was employed for surface protection. High-quality microstructures with an aspect ratio as high as 80:1 have been fabricated on sapphire surface. As a proof-of-concept application, we produced a moth-eye inspired antireflective window with sub-wavelength pyramid arrays on sapphire surface, by which broadband (3–5 μm) and high transmittance (98% at 4 μm, the best results reported so far) have been achieved. The sacrificial layer assisted inside-out femtosecond laser deep scribing technology is effective and universal, holding great promise for producing micro/nanostructured optical devices.

Abstract Background More and more evidence showed that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in the development and progression of human sophisticated diseases. Therefore, predicting human lncRNA-disease associations is a challenging and urgently task in bioinformatics to research of human sophisticated diseases. Results In the work, a global network-based computational framework called as LRWRHLDA were proposed which is a universal network-based method. Firstly, four isomorphic networks include lncRNA similarity network, disease similarity network, gene similarity network and miRNA similarity network were constructed. And then, six heterogeneous networks include known lncRNA-disease, lncRNA-gene, lncRNA-miRNA, disease-gene, disease-miRNA, and gene-miRNA associations network were applied to design a multi-layer network. Finally, the Laplace normalized random walk with restart algorithm in this global network is suggested to predict the relationship between lncRNAs and diseases. Conclusions The ten-fold cross validation is used to evaluate the performance of LRWRHLDA. As a result, LRWRHLDA achieves an AUC of 0.98402, which is higher than other compared methods. Furthermore, LRWRHLDA can predict isolated disease-related lnRNA (isolated lnRNA related disease). The results for colorectal cancer, lung adenocarcinoma, stomach cancer and breast cancer have been verified by other researches. The case studies indicated that our method is effective.

Circadian stimulus (CS) is a popular metric for evaluating circadian effects of light. However, the determination of its value is complicated. In this work, the possibility of developing a simplified model to accurately estimate CS values has been investigated. It is found that: i) the CS2018 model itself has an important limitation: a very small perturbation in spectrum could result in a significant change in CS value, which fundamentally limits the development of a simplified model based on photometric or colorimetric inputs. ii) such a limitation is effectively reduced by the latest CS2021 model, and therefore a simplified model can be developed to estimate the value of CS2021 based on illuminance, correlated color temperature, a constraint of color rending index, and the factors of the continuous light exposure duration t and the spatial distribution of circadian light exposure f. The simplified model is developed and validated by using a comprehensive data set containing 395923 lighting spectra. The small deviations in CS value, which is less than 0.087 and 0.052 for warm and cool white light sources, respectively, show that the proposed simplified model could serve as an accurate and convenient tool for practical circadian lighting design.

Abstract Background Cerebral small vascular disease (CSVD) is one of the leading causes of death in the aged population and is closely related to abnormalities in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Our study aims to clarify the relationship between small and dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (sdLDL-C) (a subcomponent of LDL-C) and neuroimaging markers of CSVD. Methods In total, 1211 Chinese adults aged ≥45 years with cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were recruited in this retrospective study from January 2018 to May 2021. Serum lipids and other baseline characteristics were investigated in relation to the occurrence of CSVD. A logistic regression model was performed to analyze the relationships between LDL subtypes and CSVD risk, and the Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the correlation between clinical characteristics and CSVD risk. ROC curves and AUCs were created and depicted to predict the best cutoff value of LDL-C subtypes for CSVD risk. Based on these data, we performed comprehensive analyses to investigate the risk factors for CSVD. Results Ultimately, 623 eligible patients were included in the present study. Of the 623 eligible patients, 487 were included in the CSVD group, and 136 were included in the group without CSVD (control group). Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infections result in a series of ophthalmic complications. Clinically, we also discover that the proportion of dry eye symptoms was significantly higher in patients with herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) than in healthy individuals. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is one of the main reasons for dry eye. Therefore, we hypothesize that HZO may associate with MGD, affecting the morphology of meibomian gland (MG) because of immune response and inflammation. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively analyze the effect of HZO with craniofacial herpes zoster on dry eye and MG morphology based on an Artificial intelligence (AI) MG morphology analytic system. In this study, 26 patients were diagnosed as HZO based on a history of craniofacial herpes zoster accompanied by abnormal ocular signs. We found that the average height of all MGs of the upper eyelid and both eyelids were significantly lower in the research group than in the normal control group (p < 0.05 for all). The average width and tortuosity of all MGs for both upper and lower eyelids were not significantly different between the two groups. The MG density of the upper eyelid and both eyelids were significantly lower in the HZO group than in the normal control group (p = 0.020 and p = 0.022). Therefore, HZO may lead to dry eye, coupled with the morphological changes of MGs, mainly including a reduction in MG density and height. Moreover, it is important to control HZO early and timely, which could prevent potential long-term severe ocular surface injury.

Background: The expression of vimentin as a marker of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) has been speculated to be associated with tissue heterogeneity and metastases of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: This study utilized in vitro co-immunoprecipitation with small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) against protein inhibitors of STAT system type 1 (PIAS1) or SMAD4 in transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) signaling pathway in combination with SUMOylation assay. Results: We successfully demonstrated that PIAS1 enhanced SUMOylation of SMAD4 by forming a complex PIAS1-SUMO1-SMAD4 protein complex. This, in accordance with subsequently increased production of vimentin microfilaments, led to enhanced migration ability of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 line, observed from wound healing assay. Conclusions: Our results further supported the positive correlation of SUMOylated SMAD4 mediated by PIAS1 and downstream overexpression of vimentin. In addition, the observation that overexpression of vimentin in this certain cell line was not necessarily linked with accelerated relative wound closure raised concerns that further exploration will be needed to confirm if the causal relationship exists between vimentin expression and the metastases of NSCLC, and if so, to what extent vimentin contributes to it.

AIM: To investigate the safety and efficacy of phacoemulsification with capsular-tension-ring implantation and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation combined with ophthalmic endoscope-controlled goniosynechialysis (Phaco-CTR-IOL-OE-GSL) for treating secondary angle-closure glaucoma induced by traumatic lens subluxation. METHODS: A retrospective and descriptive study was performed on patients with lens subluxation, angle closure, goniosynechia, and evaluated intraocular pressure (IOP) that cannot be controlled with medication, who underwent Phaco-CTR-IOL-OE-GSL. The postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), IOP, range of goniosynechia and complications were retrospectively observed. RESULTS: Nine patients with secondary angle-closure glaucoma induced by traumatic lens subluxation were included. The follow-up period was 51.1±8.6mo. The preoperative range of zonule rupture was 158.2°±33.0°, and the range of goniosynechia was 220.0°±92.5°. The baseline BCVA was 0.9±1.0 logMAR, IOP was 30.7±17.3 mm Hg, and number of anti-glaucoma medication was 3.2±1.1. Mild intraoperative hyphaemia with 8 eyes (88.8%) in the anterior chamber, and was absorbed two days postoperatively. One eye (11.1%) had postoperative ciliary body detachment and was recovered after five days of topical drug treatment. BCVA was 0.2±0.2 logMAR at 3mo postoperatively. The average IOP at the last follow-up was 16.7±2.0 mm Hg, and no anti-glaucoma medications were used. The average range of recurrent goniosynechia was 54.9°±33° at the final postoperative gonioscopic examination. CONCLUSION: Phaco-CTR-IOL-OE-GSL is safe and effective in the treatment of secondary angle-closure glaucoma induced by traumatic lens subluxation. The use of an endoscope provides a more direct and clear examination for GSL, and 360° dissection is easily achieved.

Peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) is susceptible to chilling injury under improper low-temperature storage (2°C–5°C). Previous research has shown that abscisic acid (ABA) alleviates chilling injury in fruits and vegetables, but the potential mechanism is still unclear. To explore its effectiveness and potential mechanism in alleviating chilling injury during cold storage, exogenous ABA was applied to peach fruit by immersion in 100 μmol L−1 solutions for 10 min. In our experiment, ABA alleviated chilling injury by reducing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content and ethylene production. In addition, ABA inhibited the expression of the ethylene synthesis-related genes PpACO1 and PpEIN2. At the same time, ABA activated the antioxidant enzymatic pathway and the ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle, the transcript abundance encoding genes related to antioxidant enzyme activities also changed correspondingly. The results suggested that ABA alleviated chilling injury by scavenging excessive H2O2 by promoting antioxidant enzymes and the AsA-GSH pathway.

The masked priming paradigm has been extensively used to investigate the indirect impacts of unconscious stimuli on conscious behaviors, and the congruency effect of priming on free choices has gained increasing attention. Free choices allow participants to voluntarily choose a response from multiple options during each trial. While repeated practice is known to increase priming effects in subliminal visual tasks, whether practice increases the priming effect of free choices in the masked priming paradigm is unclear. And it is also not clear how the proportions of free choice and forced choice trials in one block will affect the free choice masked priming effect. The present study applied repeated practice in the masked priming paradigm and found that after training, the participants were more likely to be influenced by masked primes during free choice, but this training process did not alter the visibility of masked stimuli. In addition, this study revealed that when the proportions of free choice and forced choice trials were equal during the training stage, this enhanced effect by practice was the strongest. These results indicated that practice could enhance masked stimulus processing in free-choice, and that the learning effect may mainly be derived from the early selection and integrated processing of masked stimuli.

Organotin compounds (OTCs) are a category of persistent toxic substances with endocrine disrupting effects and may pose a risk to aquatic organisms and human health via water. This study collected 78 surface water samples from the drinking water source in the upper Yangtze River Estuary from July 2018 to November 2019. Out of the nine OTC targets, tributyltin (TBT), dimethyltin (DMT), trimethyltin (TMT), dibutyltin (DBT), and monobutyltin (MBT) were detected from more than 50% of the water samples, with cumulative concentrations of OTCs ranging from 42.5 ± 54.0 to 421 ± 176 ng Sn L−1. The composition and concentrations of OTCs in the stormy months were different from those in other months. The concentrations of OTCs with the ebbing tide exceeded those in the flooding tide and increased when the flooding tide transitioned to the ebbing tide. A pulsed trend in concentrations of OTCs in river water was evident due to the impact of rainfall runoff and tidal currents. Identified sources of OTCs included ship antifouling paints, agricultural pesticides, and plastic waste. TBT in water sources poses a low risk to human health and a risk to the ecosystem, particularly during the stormy months.

Abstract The gut microbiota plays an important role in human health and disease. Stool, rectal swab and rectal mucosal tissue samples have been used in individual studies to survey the microbial community but the consequences of using these different sample types are not completely understood. In this study, we report differences in stool, rectal swab and rectal mucosal tissue microbial communities with shotgun metagenome sequencing of 1397 stool, swab and mucosal tissue samples from 240 participants. The taxonomic composition of stool and swab samples was distinct, but less different to each other than mucosal tissue samples. Functional profile differences between stool and swab samples are smaller, but mucosal tissue samples remained distinct from the other two types. When the taxonomic and functional profiles were used for inference in association with host phenotypes of age, sex, body mass index (BMI), antibiotics or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) use, hypothesis testing using either stool or rectal swab gave broadly significantly correlated results, but inference performed on mucosal tissue samples gave results that were generally less consistent with either stool or swab. Our study represents an important resource for determination of how inference can change for taxa and pathways depending on the choice of where to sample within the human gut.

Abstract Background Normoalbuminuric diabetic kidney disease (NADKD) is a newly defined DKD, the clinical features and pathogenesis for which are still being understood. This study aimed to investigate the features and risk factors for NADKD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted. The related clinical and laboratory data of patients with T2DM hospitalized between August 2012 and January 2020 were collected for statistical analysis. We classified the patients with T2DM into four groups on the basis of the presence or absence of albuminuria and reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Analysis of variance, the Kruskal–Wallis test, and the chi-square test were used to compare the groups. Binary logistic regression analyses with a forward stepwise method were performed to explore the risk factors for renal dysfunction in hospitalized patients with normoalbuminuric T2DM. Results Among the 1620 patients evaluated, 500 (30.9%) had DKD, of which 9% had NADKD. The prevalence of stroke, cardiovascular events, carotid plaque, and peripheral arterial disease in NADKD was significantly higher than in a non-DKD control group (normoalbuminuric T2DM patients with eGFR of ≥60 ml/min/1.73 m2). Background: Higher magnesium intake was linked to a lower risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the relationship between blood magnesium level and HCC has not been fully characterized, especially among patients with liver cirrhosis who are at a higher risk for HCC. Methods: In the Mass General Brigham Biobank, we developed a new prospective cohort of 1,430 patients with liver cirrhosis without liver cancer history using the validated International Classification of Diseases codes. We used Cox proportional hazards models to generate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for incident HCC and used generalized estimating equations to compare changes in liver biomarkers according to baseline blood magnesium, adjusting for age, sex, race, lifestyles, body mass index, type 2 diabetes, model for end-stage liver disease score, and hepatitis infection. Results: During a median follow-up period of 4.26 years, 109 patients developed HCC. Magnesium deficiency (<1.70 mg/dL; N = 158) was associated with a higher risk of HCC (HR = 1.93; 95% CI, 1.12-3.30) compared with magnesium sufficiency (≥1.70 mg/dL; N = 1282). This association remained robust in the 1-year lag analysis (HR = 2.18; 95% CI, 1.11-4.28) and in sensitivity analysis excluding patients with alcoholic liver disease (HR = 2.41; 95% CI, 1.23-4.74). Magnesium in the lowest quartile was associated with a faster increase in alanine transaminase (β = 4.35; 95% CI, 1.06-7.63), aspartate aminotransferase (β = 6.46; 95% CI, 0.28-12.6), direct bilirubin (β = 0.18; 95% CI, 0.01-0.35), and total bilirubin (β = 0.21; 95% CI, 0.03-0.39), compared with the highest quartile. Flexible multiplexing chips that permit reconfigurable multidimensional channel utilization are indispensable for revolutionary 6G terahertz communications, but the insufficient manipulation capability of terahertz waves prevents their practical implementation. Herein, we propose the first experimental demonstration of a flexible multiplexing chip for terahertz communication by revealing the unique mechanism of topological phase (TP) transition and perseveration in a heterogeneously coupled bilayer valley Hall topological photonic system. The synthetic and individual TPs operated in the coupled and decoupled states enable controllable on-chip modular TP transitions and subchannel switching. Two time-frequency interleaved subchannels support 10- and 12-Gbit/s QAM-16 high-speed data streams along corresponding paths over carriers of 120 and 130 GHz with 2.5- and 3-GHz bandwidths, respectively. This work unlocks interlayer heterogeneous TPs for inspiring ingenious on-chip terahertz-wave regulation, allowing functionality-reconfigurable, compactly integrated and CMOS-compatible chips. Abstract Background Jinqi Jiangtang (JQJT) has been widely used in clinical practice to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes. However, little research has been done to identify and classify its quality markers (Q-markers) associated with anti-diabetes bioactivity. In this study, a strategy combining mass spectrometry-based untargeted metabolomics with backpropagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN)-based machine learning approach was proposed to screen Q-markers from JQJT preparation. Methods This strategy mainly involved chemical profiling of herbal medicines, statistic processing of metabolomic datasets, detection of different anti-diabetes activities and establishment of BP-ANN model. The chemical features of seventy-eight batches of JQJT extracts were first profiled by using the untargeted UPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap metabolomic approach. The chemical features obtained which were associated with different anti-diabetes activities based on three modes of action were normalized, ranked, and then pre-selected by using ReliefF feature selection. BP-ANN model was then established and optimized to screen Q-markers based on mean impact value (MIV). Results Optimized BP-ANN architecture was established with high accuracy of R > 0.9983 and relative low error of MSE

PurposeThe major depressive disorder (MDD) can be a threat to the health of people all over the world. Although governments have developed and implemented evidence-based interventions and prevention programs to prevent MDD and maintain mental health in adolescents, the number of adolescents with this condition has been on the rise for the past 10 years.MethodsA total of 60 adolescents were recruited, including 32 drug-naive adolescents with first-episode MDD and 28 healthy controls (HCs). Alterations in the intrinsic cerebral activity of the adolescents with MDD were explored using arterial spin labeling (ASL) while differences in the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) of the two groups were assessed based on voxel-based whole-brain analysis. Finally, correlations between the regional functional abnormalities and clinical variables were investigated for adolescents with MDD.ResultsCompared with HCs, MDD patients had a lower rCBF in the left triangular part of the inferior frontal gyrus (IFGtriang) but a higher one in the right Precental gyrus (PreCG). Negative correlations were also noted between the CBF in the left IFGtriang and the Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) scores of MDD patients.ConclusionElucidating the neurobiological features of adolescent patients with MDD is important to adequately develop methods that can assist in early diagnosis, precaution and intervention.

Purpose: To evaluate ocular surface manifestations and morphological changes in meibomian glands (MGs) based on artificial intelligence (AI) analysis in patients with Demodex blepharitis.Methods: In this retrospective study, 115 subjects were enrolled, including 64 subjects with Demodex blepharitis and 51 subjects without Demodex blepharitis as control group. Morphological indexes were evaluated for height, width, tortuosity, MG density, total variation, and the three types of corrected total variation as Uneven indexes.Results: There were no statistically significant differences in all MGs’ average tortuosity and width between the two groups. The average height of all MGs and MG density were significantly lower in the Demodex blepharitis group than control group. The total variation and two types of Uneven indexes were significantly higher in the Demodex blepharitis group than in the control group. Especially the Uneven Index of total variation/MG density had an AUC of 0.822. And the sensitivity and specificity were 59.4% and 92.2%, respectively, at a cut-off value of 3971.667. In addition, Demodex blepharitis was associated with significantly lower meibum quality and expressibility, severe atrophy of MGs, a higher ocular surface disease index (OSDI), and more instability of the tear film.Conclusion:Demodex mites are strongly associated with morphological changes in the MGs and may cause uneven gland atrophy. Therefore, the novel characteristic parameter, the Uneven index, may serve as a digital biomarker to evaluate uneven atrophy of MGs and prompt Demodex blepharitis.

PurposeTo compare the ocular surface and meibum microbial communities of humans with Demodex Blepharitis (DB) and healthy controls.MethodsConjunctival sac and meibum samples from 25 DB patients and 11 healthy controls were analyzed using metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS).ResultsThe alpha-diversity of the conjunctival sac microbiome of the DB group (observed, Chao1, ACE) was lower than that of the control group, whereas all meibum diversity indicators were similar. In conjunctival samples, the relative abundance (RA) of the phylum Proteobacteria was significantly higher (p=0.023), and the RA of both phyla Actinobacteria and Firmicutes was significantly lower (p=0.002, 0.025, respectively) in the DB group than that in the control group. In meibum samples, the RA of the phyla Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were similar, whereas that of the phylum Firmicutes was significantly lower in the DB group (p=0.019) than that in the control group. Linear discriminant analysis with effect size measurement of the conjunctival and meibum microbiomes showed that Sphingobium sp. YG1 and Acinetobacter guillouiae were enriched in the DB group. Sphingobium sp. YG1, Acinetobacter guillouiae and Pseudomonas putida in the DB group were related to more severe ocular surface clinical parameters. Discriminative genera’s principal coordinate analysis separated all control and DB microbiomes into two distinct clusters.ConclusionsProteobacteria’s increased prevalence may indicate ocular microbial community instability. The species Sphingobium sp. YG1 and Acinetobacter guillouiae are potentially pathogenic bacterial biomarkers in DB. Demodex infection mainly affects the ocular surface microbiome rather than penetrating deeper into the meibomian gland.

PurposeWhile electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been repeatedly been shown to effectively and efficiently treat the major depressive disorder (MDD), the mechanistic basis for such therapeutic efficacy remains to be firmly established. As such, further research exploring the ECT-based treatment of MDD in an adolescent population is warranted.MethodsThis study included 30 treatment-naïve first-episode MDD patients and 30 healthy control (HC) individuals (aged 12–17 years). All participants were scanned using rs-fMRI, and the 30 MDD patients were scanned again after 2 weeks of the ECT treatment period. Intrinsic local activity in each voxel was assessed based on the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) parameter, with all fALFF analyses being completed using the REST application. Correlations between ECT-related changes in fALFF and clinical parameters were additionally examined.ResultsRelative to HCs, MDD patients exhibited increased fALFF values in the right inferior frontal gyrus (ORBinf), inferior occipital gyrus (IOG), and the left middle frontal gyrus (MFG) at baseline. Following ECT, these patients exhibited significant increases in fALFF values in the right medial superior frontal gyrus (SFGmed), dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus (SFGdor), anterior cingulate, and paracingulate gyrus (ACG), median cingulate and paracingulate gyrus (DCG), and left MFG. MDD patient HAMD scores were negatively correlated with fALFF values when analyzing pre-ECT vs. post-HCT ΔHAMD and fALFF values in the right SFGmed, SFGdor, and the left MFG.ConclusionThese data suggest that ECT induced altered fALFF in some regions of the brain, suggesting that these alterations may serve as a neurobiological indicator of ECT effectiveness in MDD adolescents.

BackgroundOpioid use disorder (OUD), which is most commonly exhibited as addiction, is a persistent chronic disease that places a burden on families and society. Various peripheral traits have been linked to OUD in the past, but research on this topic is insufficient.MethodsSeven male patients with OUD and 7 male healthy controls with matched demographic and clinical data were enrolled in this study. Peripheral blood RNA was used to construct an rRNA-removed library and a small RNA library. The peripheral transcriptomic differences between the two groups were investigated using RNA-seq. Differentially expressed messenger RNAs (mRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) were identified by bioinformatics methods, and functional enrichment analysis with differentially expressed RNAs was performed to investigate the potential biological mechanisms of OUD.ResultsA total of 229 mRNAs (115 upregulated, 114 downregulated), 416 lncRNAs (191 upregulated, 225 downregulated), 17 circRNAs (16 upregulated, 1 downregulated) and 74 miRNAs (42 upregulated, 32 downregulated) were differentially expressed between the OUD group and the healthy control group. Functional enrichment analysis with differentially expressed mRNAs showed that immunity, GnRH secretion, and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways were associated with OUD. Immunity-, JAK-STAT-, and insulin-related pathways were enriched in functional enrichment analysis of target genes predicted by differentially expressed miRNAs.ConclusionWe identified hundreds of differentially expressed genes that were enriched in immunity, GnRH secretion and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways. Some genes with significant changes might be used as potential biomarkers for progression and treatment of OUD.

ObjectivesPrevious studies of the associations between white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) were still conflicting; therefore, our study aimed to conduct a systematic review of all of the available research on this topic and a meta-analysis of the association between WMH and CKD among observational studies.Setting and DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis.Outcome MeasuresSeverity of WMH.Methods and ParticipantsAll relevant studies in public databases were examined until 15 November 2020. Two independent reviewers assessed all the included studies using the Cross-Sectional/Prevalence Study Quality (CSSQ) scale, and then literature review and meta-analyses were undertaken.ResultsWe pooled the odds ratio (OR) for the presence of WMH, periventricular hyperintensities (PVH), and deep subcortical white matter hyperintensities (DWMH) of patients with CKD vs. non-CKD patients by subgroup analysis, and the results obtained were WMH OR 2.07, 95% CI [1.58, 2.70], PVH OR 2.41, 95% CI [1.90, 3.05], and DWMH OR 2.11, 95% CI [1.60, 2.80], respectively. The main outcome showed that patients with CKD were more likely to have WMH in the brain compared to the normal controls. Another meta-analysis showed a statistically significant decline in renal function in patients with moderate to severe WMH compared with those with no to mild WMH.ConclusionsThe findings indicated that patients with CKD were more likely to experience WMH than demographically matched controls. On the other hand, patients with moderate to severe WMH in the brain had poor renal function more frequently than those with no to mild WMH.
