Modern historians have repeatedly cast Sri Lanka's historical female monarchs as 'queens', without critically reflecting on the conceptual limits and nuances of that term. Through a close examination of sources from the early second millennium, and their reception by scholars from the colonial period onwards, I demonstrate that Sri Lanka's female monarchs—particularly Līlāvatī of Poḷonnaruva (r. 1197–1200, 1209, and 1210)—engaged in a more creative and subversive performance of gender than modern 'queenship' allows. In particular, I argue, a discourse of kingship's inherent masculinity, advanced in literary and didactic texts written primarily by male monastics, was too-willingly accepted by colonial-period scholars. Closer attention to the material evidence of Līlāvatī's reign, however, challenges this discourse and further suggests a politics of gender beyond the binary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The letters that María Luisa of Parma wrote from Spain to her third daughter, Infanta María Luisa, who lived in Florence and ruled the territory of Tuscany as Queen of Etruria, constitute a precious historical source of the last years of the reign of Carlos IV. They are also of great interest because of the important information they offer both on the political position of the Spanish queen, who was completely Francophile, and on certain traits of her personality: distrustful, possessive, and controlling, although also intelligent, cunning and well-informed on international politics. Disinformation is currently one of Europe's greatest challenges. In the past years, the European continent in general and, more precisely, the European Union have been suffering from various disinformation campaigns: such as the one that led to Brexit; the parallel health and disinformation pandemic; or the hybrid propaganda strategy following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In this context, the death of Queen Elizabeth II of England has also been marked by disinformation practices that went viral throughout Europe. Therefore, this research aims to delve into the nature of disinformation regarding the death of the Queen in the timeframe between 8 and 22 September 2022, focusing in three European countries, namely Spain, the United Kingdom and France. For that purpose, the study is based on a content analysis of 76 publications published by fact-checking organisation, as well as open-ended surveys with specialised agents on disinformation. Overall, results show that social networks were the main platform through which misinformative content was disseminated, with Twitter occupying the first position- whereas other previous studies have shown the primacy of Facebook as a source of disinformation. The hoaxes, which generally included images, mainly responded to the typology of misleading and fabricated content established by Wardle (2017). Likewise, the main subject matter of the viral hoaxes was conspiracy theories, focusing on Elizabeth II as the main protagonist. Moreover, the frequency of hoax dissemination was significantly higher during the first week after the death of the monarch and responded to a transnational trend in which the spread of disinformation was adapted to national contexts. The article discusses the exhibition "Colour Revolution: Victorian Art, Fashion & Design" at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The exhibition explores the use of color in Victorian art, fashion, and design, challenging the perception of Victorian Britain as a gloomy and monochromatic place. It showcases a range of colorful art and artifacts from the museum's collection and loans from other institutions, highlighting the interdisciplinary connections between science, technology, and culture during the Industrial Revolution. The exhibition also examines the scientific and social implications of color, including the development of synthetic dyes and their impact on fashion and society. The article also mentions that the exhibition explores the connections between color and race, gender, and colonialism, featuring works that depict the skin tones of enslaved African women and the color associations of colonial hierarchies. It also highlights the use of color in the Aesthetic and Decadent movements, as well as in photography and film. The exhibition acknowledges the complexities of Victorian society but primarily focuses on collaboration, experimentation, and innovation. [Extracted from the article]

GRAVE goods , *RITES & ceremonies , *HISTORICAL source material , *QUEENS , *TOMBS , *RITUAL - Abstract
The analysis of grave goods provides information about the rituality of ancient populations. The present investigation aspires to broaden the knowledge about the funerary use of spindle whorls among pre-Hispanic Mayas. These objects are generally interpreted as part of the identity of the buried individuals. However, in Palenque, southern Mexico, spindle whorls are deposited in contexts that present evidence of posthumous rituals and secondary manipulation of the skeletal content. In this research, six recently excavated funerary contexts from Group IV, an elite household from Palenque, are examined in detail. These graves are compared with burials of other domestic groups and with an example of the Palenque’s royalty: the Red Queen’s sarcophagus. Iconographic, historical and ethnographic sources allowed to infer that the spindle whorls in Palenque were used to carry out posthumous rites that involved the production of thread to materialize a communication route with the ancestors. This article examines the representation of whiteness in Thomas Middleton's works, specifically his 1613 London Lord Mayor's pageant and the city comedy A Chaste Maid in Cheapside. It argues that both texts depict whiteness in relation to the consumer economy in London, with the pageant celebrating international trade and the comedy portraying a feminized version of consumerist whiteness. The article also discusses the racial implications of the globalized London marketplace and the connection between trade and British whiteness. Additionally, it explores how the city comedy genre domesticates whiteness through practices of female consumption in the birthing room. The article suggests that these plays contribute to the formation of whiteness in early modern London through the consumption of imported goods. Another aspect discussed in the text is the significance of sugar in early modern England, particularly in relation to class and race. It explains that sugar initially represented luxury and foreignness, but as it became more accessible and refined in England, it also became a symbol of whiteness and social status. The text also explores how sugar consumption was gendered and how it played a role in domestic reproduction. It argues that the excessive consumption of sugar by white women in the play "Chaste Maid in Cheapside" reinforces racial and gender stereotypes. The text further discusses the play and its racial and gendered implications, focusing on the protagonist's relationship with imported goods. It suggests that the availability of these goods to non-aristocratic Londoners [Extracted from the article]

FRENCH painting ,QUEENS ,WREATHS ,GODDESSES ,GODS - Abstract
In the 24 paintings for the French Queen Marie de' Medici, painted by Peter Paul Rubens 1622−1625, historic facts are depicted in the shape of mythological gods and symbols resulting in allegorical scenes. When focusing on headdress, the crowns and the wreaths rarely present a challenge in modern interpretations, but a magnificent diadem does. The grand diadem in these paintings appears to be misread in analyses today. At this point in history, the crowns and the wreaths have been transferred from divine spheres and turned into physical objects. The large diadem has not; it is still only a symbol on a goddess or for goddess-like qualities. Today, it is an easy mistake to believe that Rubens copied what he saw instead of heralding a coming fashion. Here, I suggest that it is the highest goddess Juno the Queen is personifying. Juno, a goddess for women in general, was also the saviour of the country and a special counsellor of the state. These roles are what Queen Marie took on when acting as regent for her young son, Louis XIII. By putting Juno's diadem on Marie's head, the divine abilities are manifested according to the allegorical language of the Baroque. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the concept of the "beautiful mess effect," highlighting how vulnerability and self-disclosure can lead to stronger connections with others. It uses examples like Princess Diana's candid interviews and psychological experiments to show that people often appreciate authenticity and courage in sharing personal struggles. The research suggests that revealing vulnerabilities can foster empathy and deepen relationships, challenging the common belief that such disclosures will be met with harsh judgment. The text also explores the implications of self-disclosure in therapy, indicating that well-judged disclosure by therapists can enhance trust and rapport with clients. [Extracted from the article]

The objective of this study is to examine the survival rates of queens in pleometrotic groups of two ant species: Lasius paralienus Seifert, 1992 (a monogynous species) and Solenopsis fugax (Latreille, 1798) (a polygynous species). The study was conducted in 2020 and 2021 in Odesa, Ukraine. After the nuptial flight, 45 gynes of S. fugax and 64 of L. paralienus were captured. Solenopsis fugax were seated in groups of 5 (9 experiments in total), L. paralienus in groups of 5 (8 experiments) and 3 specimens (8 experiments). For L. paralienus, the effect of pleometrotic group size on the queens was tested. Maximum duration of the experiment was 115 days for S. fugax and 293 days for L. paralienus (until only one queen remains or the number of queens does not change significantly). The number of queens (alive, dead and killed), workers and brood were counted once a week. There were no significant differences in mortality between groups of 3 and 5 queens of Lasius paralienus ants (p = 0.06). The period of main queen mortality occurs shortly after founding of the pleometrotic group. Mortality continues to rise after the emergence of a group of 10–30 workers until only 1 queen remains in group of Lasius. When L. paralienus queens died naturally, the average number of workers was 7.5, the average number of larvae was 3.32 and the average number of pupae was 5.16. However, when they died due to fights, the average number of workers was 23.89, the average number of larvae was 8.89 and the average number of pupae was 13.89. In the case of S. fugax, when queens died naturally, the average number of workers was 5.43. A comparison of the total queen mortality in the pleometrotic groups of the two ant species showed that most queens survive in the polygynous S. fugax, whereas all but one die in the monogynous Lasius.

The book provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the English church from Roman times to the present day. While the narrative aspect of the book is well done, the analysis of the church's character is less convincing. The author's perspective on certain historical figures and events may be oversimplified or biased. The article discusses the concept of kingship as a political economy of social subjugation, where one person is king because others see themselves as subjects. It explores the relationship between awe and dread in the accumulation of wealth by monarchs, using examples from the British monarchy. The author argues that the British Royal Family plays a role in global wealth inequalities and that their economic power is intertwined with their symbolic status. The article concludes that monarchy perpetuates social inequality and that addressing global inequalities requires the abolition of monarchy. [Extracted from the article]

Ottoman-Brazilian relations began in the mid-19th century. After this process, diplomatic representations and mutual political and commercial relations were established. Immediately after the start of Ottoman-Brazilian political and commercial relations, there was a significant wave of migration from Ottoman territories, mainly from Syria and Mount Lebanon to Brazil. During this migration wave, Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II and his wife, Empress Teresa Cristina, unofficially visited the Ottoman Empire and the Holy Lands in October 1876. The most important reason for the visit is to visit the holy places in and around Jerusalem, which are considered sacred by the three divine religions of the emperor and his wife. Although the visit was unofficial, it was closely monitored by the Ottoman administration and Sultan Abdulhamid II. The king and queen returned to their country quite pleased with the Ottoman rulers’ visits and attention. In this study, the purpose, impact, and consequences of this visit, which is thought to have had a significant influence on migration from Ottoman territories to Brazil, have been attempted to be elucidated. Our study’s primary sources consist of documents classified under various funds in the Ottoman Archives in Turkey, documents found in the Museu da Imigração do Estado de São Paulo in Brazil, and libraries in the United States of America. In addition, direct and indirect studies on the visit have also been conducted. In our study, the document examination method, which is an indispensable method in historical research, was preferred. Towards the end of 1750 Charles of Bourbon, king of Naples and Sicily, commissioned architect Luigi Vanvitelli to design a new royal palace in Caserta. In May 1751, a few months later, queen Maria Amalia of Saxony asked Vanvitelli to design a new modern city next to the king's house. In fact, the queen wanted the royal palace to rise in a comfortable urban environment, consisting of high quality buildings, uniform in architectural features and dimensions. Vanvitelli designed the New Caserta overcoming Baroque urbanism with a rational pattern of enclosed courtyards arranged in symmetrical plot. To eliminate monotony in the urban enviroment, streets and squares had to have various shapes and sizes. Tree-lined boulevards had to cut the city in cross and diagonal, directed towards the major cities of the Kingdom. The departure for Spain of Charles of Bourbon and Maria Amalia of Saxony, on 7 October 1759, caused the failure of the project. The city designed by Vanvitelli would never be built. On the contrary, during the nineteenth century the real city would have developed in a completely different way from what the architect predicted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SWIMMING , *QUEENS , *LIONS ,BRITISH kings & rulers - Abstract
A pair of lion brothers in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda, have made the longest recorded swim for their species, crossing a 1.5-kilometer channel filled with hippos and crocodiles. The swim, captured by a drone-mounted thermal camera, was the lions' fourth attempt, with previous attempts being aborted due to encounters with large animals. One of the lions, named Jacob, has only three legs and has faced numerous challenges in his life, including being gored by a buffalo and losing his leg in a poacher's trap. The researchers believe the lions crossed the channel to reach lionesses they could hear calling from 2 kilometers away. [Extracted from the article]

"Dissent After Disruption: Church and State in Scotland, 1843–63" by Ryan Mallon explores the relationship between the Free Church of Scotland and the United Presbyterian Church during the mid-19th century. The book examines the convergences and divergences between the two churches as they sought to shape the future of Presbyterian dissent in Scotland. The core issue that caused tension between the churches was the nature of the church-state relationship, with the United Presbyterian Church advocating for voluntaryism and the Free Church maintaining a belief in national religious establishments. Despite shared evangelical ideas and enemies, the inability to agree on the establishment principle prevented the churches from effectively challenging the established Church of Scotland. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the historical context and developments within Scottish Presbyterian dissent, as well as the churches' attempts at social reform and their interactions with broader political and social issues. Overall, "Dissent After Disruption" offers a valuable contribution to the field of Victorian Scottish religious history and is recommended for scholars interested in 19th-century Scotland, Presbyterianism, or Victorian Nonconformity. "The Art of Creating Houses" is a book review that explores the architectural designs of Polhemus Savery DaSilva (PSD), a firm known for their traditional style houses in Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard. The review highlights PSD's consistent design approach and their use of shingles as a siding material, which is characteristic of the shingle style. The text discusses the influence of historical references, critical regionalism, and Postmodernism on PSD's designs. While the houses showcased in the book are mostly large and expensive, the author suggests that it would be beneficial to see more projects with modest budgets to fully understand the firm's capabilities. The review questions the sustainability of a style inspired by historical New England architecture in a changing world. [Extracted from the article]
