La bioseguridad constituye un tema de fundamental importancia durante la formación y el ejercicio profesional en numerosas carreras, debido a las consecuencias que puede tener sobre la salud y el medioambiente. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue identificar conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas relacionadas a la bioseguridad en 266 estudiantes de la Universidad Católica de Córdoba, en las carreras de Bioquímica y Veterinaria, durante el año 2016. A tal fin, se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, en el que se aplicó una encuesta, previamente validada, cuyo instrumento fue un cuestionario con preguntas cerradas. Más del 80% de los estudiantes respondieron correctamente a preguntas de conocimiento y manifestaron ser conscientes de que a lo largo de su carrera estarían expuestos a enfermedades infecto-contagiosas. Sin embargo, a medida que avanzaban en el año de cursado, el adiestramiento en las prácticas y el exceso de confianza, contribuyeron de forma negativa en la adhesión a actitudes seguras como las de no comer, fumar o beber durante el trabajo. La bioseguridad debe constituir un tema prioritario durante el cursado de toda la carrera, junto a un rol comprometido del docente que da ejemplo en la práctica, mientras refuerza y mejora las conductas de los futuros profesionales., Fil: Irrazabal, María Gabriela. We report a case of a baby, who, after pregnancy complicated by maternal Addison's disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis and natural delivery, unexpectedly presented a cardiorespiratory collapse and died 1 hour after birth without responding to prolonged neonatal resuscitation maneuvers. The cause of death was reliably established by carrying out a forensic postmortem examination. More specifically, the histological examination of the lungs showed the presence of abundant endoalveolar and endobronchial cornea scales caused by absorption of amniotic fluid. The neuropathological examination of the brainstem highlighted severe hypodevelopment of the retrotrapezoid/parafacial respiratory group, which is a complex of neurons located in the caudal pons that is involved in respiratory rhythm coordination, especially expiration, in conditions of enhanced respiratory drive, as well as in chemoreception. This neuropathological finding shed new light on the mechanisms underlying the massive amniotic fluid aspiration which led to this early death.

Stillbirth is one of the most stressful life events affecting over 3 million pregnancies per year throughout the world. An accurate autopsy of the stillborn fetus, including the placenta and umbilical cord examination, should be performed promptly after delivery. A thorough maternal history also should be taken, including exposures to risk factors. In many cases a death cause, attributable to fetal, maternal, or placental pathology, is clearly identified. However, in 50% or more of cases the cause remains unknown. The purpose of this study is to highlight possible developmental alterations of the autonomic nervous system in unexplained stillbirths to provide an explanation of the pathogenetic mechanism of their death. We conducted a careful neuropathological study of the brainstem, where the main vital centers are located, in 85 unexplained stillbirths and 52 age-matched controls died of known cause. Information on the maternal lifestyle, including the smoking habit, was collected in all cases. Hypodevelopment of neuronal centers involved in breathing control, all connected together in a "respiratory network", precisely hypoplasia of the facial/parafacial complex, Kölliker-Fuse nucleus, pre-Bötzinger nucleus and intermediolateral nucleus, were frequently observed in unexplained deaths, significantly related to maternal cigarette smoking. We support the hypothesis of a strong action of maternal smoking during pregnancy on the development of brainstem respiratory nuclei and suggest an explanation of the high incidence of the respiratory network alterations in unexplained fetal death, when breathing not represents a vital function.

Sudden intrauterine unexplained death syndrome (SIUDS) represents one of the main open issues in the scientific and social setting of the modern medicine, and our efforts have aimed to understand its possible causes and risk factors.A 43-case series of consecutive unexplained fetal deaths coming from Northeast Italy, collected in a 5-year period (2011-2015), has been submitted to an in-depth investigation, based on neuropathological and cardiopathological examinations, immunohistochemistry for neuronal nuclear antigen (NeuN), genetic characterization for the serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene polymorphisms, and toxicological environmental analyses.The overall survey from the neuropathological findings highlights one or more congenital morphological abnormalities of the autonomic nervous system in 77% of cases of sudden fetal deaths.From our results emerges the need to perform a complete autopsy of all SIUDS victims with an in-depth examination of the neuronal centers of the brainstem, which modulate the vital functions.

Objective Pain control is a priority in patient evaluation. Despite the proliferation of guidelines, pain is still underassessed and undertreated, especially in children. To improve efficiency and to adhere to best medical practice, our triage software was upgraded; it included mandatory pain scoring for the admission of a child to the pediatric emergency service, thereby limiting the chances of overlooking a child experiencing pain. We conducted this study to verify the effect of routine versus mandatory pain scoring on pain management under the hypothesis that mandatory pain assessment would improve reevaluation and pain treatment. Methods This retrospective case-control study was conducted in our Pediatric Emergency Department (ED). We collected data with regard to pain assessment and reassessment at triage and during the entire stay in the ED, and also with regard to the drugs eventually administered. We reviewed the charts of 1274 patients admitted with the older triage software and those of 1262 patients admitted with the newer triage software (intervention group). Results Pain was evaluated significantly more frequently in the intervention group at triage, during the medical evaluation, and at discharge. In the intervention group, a smaller percentage of patients were treated for pain at both triage and during their stay in the ED (P=0.078 and 0.048). Pain reassessment resulted lower in the intervention group (P Discussion Mandatory pain assessment improved the pain evaluation rate. Aims The nucleolus is an important cellular component involved in the biogenesis of the ribosome. This study was performed in order to validate the introduction of the argyrophilic nucleolar organiser region (AgNOR) stain technique, specific for the nucleoli detection, in neuropathological studies on sudden fetal and infant death. Methods In a wide set of fetuses and infants, aged from 27 gestational weeks to eight postnatal months and dead from both known and unknown causes, an in-depth neuropathological study usually applied at the Lino Rossi Research Center of the Milan University was implemented by the AgNOR method. Results Peculiar abnormalities of the nucleoli, as partial or total disruption above all in Purkinje cells (PCs), were exclusively found in victims of sudden fetal and infant death, and not in controls. The observed nucleolar alterations were frequently related to nicotine absorption in pregnancy. Conclusions We conclude that these findings represent early hallmarks of PC degeneration, contributing to the pathophysiology of sudden perinatal death.

Ameloblastoma is a borderline tumor of odontogenic origin, with a high recurrence rate and possible local aggressiveness. The etiopathogenetic factors involved in its occurrence are not still defined and our study has been precisely aimed to search for novel factors associated with its development. Sections cut from paraffin blocks, containing the representative specimens of 18 different ameloblastomas, collected in a 15-year period (1999-2014), have been observed by an environmental scanning electron microscope, in order to search micro- and nano-sized particles and to identify their composition. In all the neoplastic cases, micro- and nano-sized metallic debris, differing in size and composition, have been detected inside the ameloblastomatous cells. On the contrary, the total absence of metallic particles in the healthy control cases has been emerged. Our results reveal a relationship between ameloblastoma and metallic particulate. The cigarette smoke and the routine dental practice appear the most probable source for the presence of these biopersistant inorganic particles inside the neoplastic cells.

A hallmark behavioral feature of fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the propensity for individuals with the syndrome to exhibit significant impairments in social gaze during interactions with others. However, previous studies employing eye tracking methodology to investigate this phenomenon have been limited to presenting static photographs or videos of social interactions rather than employing a real-life social partner. To improve upon previous studies, we used a customized eye tracking configuration to quantify the social gaze of 51 individuals with FXS and 19 controls, aged 14-28 years, while they engaged in a naturalistic face-to-face social interaction with a female experimenter. Importantly, our control group was matched to the FXS group on age, developmental functioning, and degree of autistic symptomatology. Results showed that participants with FXS spent significantly less time looking at the face and had shorter episodes (and longer inter-episodes) of social gaze than controls. Regression analyses indicated that communication ability predicted higher levels of social gaze in individuals with FXS, but not in controls. Conversely, degree of autistic symptoms predicted lower levels of social gaze in controls, but not in individuals with FXS. Taken together, these data indicate that naturalistic social gaze in FXS can be measured objectively using existing eye tracking technology during face-to-face social interactions. Given that impairments in social gaze were specific to FXS, this paradigm could be employed as an objective and ecologically valid outcome measure in ongoing Phase II/Phase III clinical trials of FXS-specific interventions.
