Abstract

The current study proposes a flexible approach to studying informant discrepancies: Latent Difference Scores modeling (LDS). The LDS approach is demonstrated using an empirical example in which associations between mother-adolescent and father-adolescent discrepant parenting perceptions, and concurrent and later adolescent externalizing behaviors, were investigated. Early adolescents (N = 477, aged 12-15 years), mothers (N = 470), and fathers (N = 440) filled out questionnaires about mothers' and fathers' parenting. RESULTS using the LDS approach are compared to results obtained by the 2 existing approaches for informant discrepancies: Observed Difference Scores modeling (ODS) and Polynomial Regression Analyses (PRA). RESULTS from the LDS approach show that adolescents perceive their mothers' and fathers' parenting less favorably than mothers and fathers themselves, and that stronger mother-adolescent discrepancies are consistently related to stronger father-adolescent discrepancies. Parent-adolescent discrepancies were concurrently associated with more aggressive and rule-breaking behaviors, but not longitudinally. RESULTS generalized across the 2 discrepancy approaches, but only very few significant associations were found in the PRA. Abstract

In deze studie onderzochten we de stabiliteit van temperamenttypes bij peuters, en longitudinale relaties tussen temperamenttypes en opvoedgedrag.Moeders (n = 96) rapporteerden vier keer in één jaar over het temperament van hun kinderen (44 % meisjes; gemiddelde leeftijd = 30 maanden, bereik = 18-43 maanden). Opvoedgedrag werd door middel van observaties en zelfrapportage gemeten.We vonden drie temperamenttypes: een ‘gewoon’ type, een ‘expressief’ type met externaliserende problemen, en een ‘angstig’ type met internaliserende problemen. Temperamenttypes waren zeer stabiel over tijd (72 % stabiliteit na een jaar). Veranderingen in temperamenttype waren gerelateerd aan opvoedgedrag: toenames in de kans om tot het gewone type te behoren, waren gerelateerd aan toenames in positief en afnames in negatief opvoedgedrag. 107. Long-term developmental changes in children’s lower-order Big Five personality facets

Abstract

Objective This study examined long-term developmental changes in mother-rated lower-order facets of children's Big Five dimensions. Method Two independent community samples covering early childhood (2–4.5 years; N = 365, 39% girls) and middle childhood to the end of middle adolescence (6–17 years; N = 579, 50% girls) were used. All children had the Belgian nationality. Developmental changes were examined using cohort-sequential latent growth modeling on the 18 facets of the Hierarchical Personality Inventory for Children. Results In early childhood, changes were mostly similar across child gender. Between 2 and 4.5 years, several facets showed mean-level stability; others changed in the direction of less Extraversion and Emotional Stability, and more Benevolence and Imagination. The lower-order facets of Conscientiousness showed opposite changes. Gender differences became more apparent from middle childhood onward for facets of all dimensions except Imagination, for which no gender differences were found. Between 6 and 17 years, same-dimension facets showed different shapes of growth. Facets that changed linearly changed mostly in the direction of less Extraversion, Benevolence, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Imagination. Changes in facets for which nonlinear growth was found generally moved in direction or magnitude during developmental transitions. Conclusion This study provides comprehensive, fine-grained knowledge about personality development during the first two decades of life.

108. Nutritional red flags in children with cerebral palsy.

Abstract

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) are at risk for under-nutrition. The European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) guidelines identified anthropometric nutritional red flags for neurologically impaired children: weight for age z -score (WFA) < −2, triceps skinfold (TSF) or arm muscle area (AMA) < 10th centile and faltering weight. This study aimed to (1) evaluate the nutritional status of Flemish children and adolescents with CP using different anthropometric indicators; (2) assess the prevalence of nutritional red flags and (3) identify risk factors for low anthropometric parameters. This study was a prospective, longitudinal observational study recruiting children and adolescents with CP (2–20 years) in 9 specialized Flemish centres. Measurements were performed at baseline (t 1 , n = 325), after 6 (t 2 , total n = 268) and 12 months (t 3 , total n = 191). WFA z -scores were based on Flemish growth charts; TSF, subscapular skinfolds (SSF) and AMA compared with US reference data. Weight faltering was defined as ≥0.5 decrease in weight SDS at t 2 or t 3. At t 1 50 patients (15.4%) were classified as gross motor function classification system (GMFCS) 1, 95 (29.2%) as GMFCS 2, 49 (15.1%) as GMFCS 3, 54 (16.6%) as GMFCS 4, and 77 (23.7%) as GMFCS 5. The overall median (Q1; Q3) age was 11.7 (8.2; 15.9) years; 61.5% were boys and 22 (6.8%) had a gastrostomy (17 (22.1%) of GMFCS 5 group). The median (Q1; Q3) WFA z -score was −1.13 (−2.6; −0.1); 71.4% of the GMFCS 5 children had a WFA z -score < −2. The median (Q1; Q3) MUAC z -score was 0.17 (−0.7; 1.0); 16.9% of the GFMCS 5 children had MUAC z -score < −2. Median (Q1; Q3) TSF and SSF z -scores were respectively −0.01 (−0.8; 0.9) and 0.27 (−0.3; 0.9). All anthropometric indices tended to decrease with increasing GMFCS (p < 0.001). At t 1 42.1% had at least one nutritional red flag, at t 2 40.3% and at t 3 41.4%. Of those with at least one nutritional red flag at t 1 or t 2 , respectively 14.7% and 18.8% suffered weight loss 6 months later. A GMFCS >2 and dysphagia were associated with a higher risk for lower scores of nearly all nutritional indices. Underweight was detected in almost three quarters of CP patients with GMFCS 5 classification, whereas deficits in subcutaneous fat and arm muscle reserve were observed in one fifth. Nutritional red flags, present in about 40% of the Flemish CP children, were apparently not successfully addressed in clinical practice, since up to one-fifth of CP patients with warning signs lost even further weight in the following 6 months. Abstract

Background:For elementary school-children with aggressive behaviour problems, there is a strong need for effective preventive interventions to interrupt the developmental trajectory towards more serious behaviour problems.Aim:The aim of this RCT-study was to evaluate a school-based individual tailor-made intervention (Stay Cool Kids), designed to reduce aggressive behaviour in selected children by enhancing cognitive behavioural skills.Method:The sample consisted of 48 schools, with 264 fourth-grade children selected by their teachers because of elevated levels of externalizing behaviour (TRF T-score > 60), randomly assigned to the intervention or no-intervention control condition.Results:The intervention was found to be effective in reducing reactive and proactive aggressive behaviour as reported by children, mothers, fathers or teachers, with effect sizes ranging from .11 to .32. Clinically relevant changes in teacher-rated externalizing behaviour were found: the intervention reduced behaviour problems to (sub) clinical or normative levels for significantly more children than the control condition. Some aspects of problems in social cognitive functioning were reduced and children showed more positive self-perception. Ethnic background and gender moderated intervention effects on child and teacher reported aggression and child response generation.Conclusions:The results of this study demonstrate the effectiveness on outcome behaviour and child cognitions of an individual tailor-made intervention across informants under real-world conditions.

In deze studie werd een groepsgerichte sociale-vaardigheidstraining geëvalueerd bij n = 161 kinderen van zeven tot en met dertien jaar met probleemgedrag. De onderzoeksopzet was een studie met een niet-gerandomiseerde wachtlijstcontrolegroep, een voor- en nameting en een follow-up-meting twaalf maanden na een optioneel vervolgkamp. Op de nameting lieten zowel de experimentele als de controlegroep kleine tot middelgrote verbeteringen zien in sociale en internaliserende problemen, terwijl alleen in de experimentele groep een kleine en positieve verandering in sociale angst werd gevonden. Na het vervolgkamp (zes maanden later) werd in een selecte steekproef uit de experimentele groep een grote en positieve afname gevonden in probleemgedrag, die bij de follow-up-meting na twaalf maanden behouden bleek te zijn. Echter, omdat bij de follow-up geen controlegroep meer beschikbaar was, kan niet gesteld worden dat deze veranderingen het gevolg waren van de interventie.

Abstract

Objective Children with concurrent impairments in regulating affect, behavior, and cognition can be identified with the Anxious/Depressed, Aggressive Behavior, and Attention Problems scales (or AAA scales) of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Jointly, these scales form the Dysregulation Profile (DP). Despite persuasive evidence that DP is a marker for severe developmental problems, no consensus exists on the preferred conceptualization and operationalization of DP in preschool years. We addressed this concern by testing and validating the factor structure of DP in a group of predominantly clinically referred preschool children. Method Participants were 247 children (195 boys and 52 girls), aged 3.5 to 5.5 years. Children were assessed at baseline and 18 months later, using parent and teacher reports, a clinical interview with parents, behavioral observations, and neuropsychological tasks. Results Confirmatory factor analysis showed that a bifactor model, with a general DP factor and 3 specific factors representing the AAA scales, fitted the data better than a second-order model and a one-factor model for both parent-reported and teacher-reported child problem behavior. Criterion validity analyses showed that the DP factor was concurrently and longitudinally associated with markers of dysregulation and clinically relevant criteria, whereas the specific factors representing the AAA scales were more differentially related to those criteria. Conclusion DP is best conceptualized as a broad syndrome of dysregulation that exists in addition to the specific syndromes as represented by the AAA scales. Implications for researchers and clinicians are discussed.

114. Pathological Personality Domains and Social Media Use in Emerging Adults: Mediation by Social Media Self-Control Failure

Abstract

Social media use has been associated with negative effects on mental health, but little is known about the role of personality pathology in predicting social media use. To address this gap, this longitudinal study examined the relationship between self-reported pathological personality domains (Short Form Personality Inventory for the DSM-5; PID-5-SF), social media use (hours per day) and social media self-control failure measured 3 years later. A total of 368 emerging adults (M age= 24.86 years, SD= 1.11, 55% female) were included. Using a multivariate mediation model, we investigated whether pathological personality traits relate to social media use through social media self-control failure. Results indicated that while no direct relationships were observed, social media self-control failure served as an indirect-only mediator between the pathological personality domain of disinhibition and social media use. These findings have implications for clinical practice in identifying individuals at risk for higher social media use.

Abstract

This study investigated stability of toddlers’ temperament types, and longitudinal associations between temperament types and parenting. Mothers (n = 96) reported on their child’s temperament four times throughout 1 year (44 % girls; Mage = 30 months, range = 18–43 months). Parenting was measured by self-report and observation. We found three temperament types: a ‘typical’ type, an ‘expressive’ type with externalizing problems, and a ‘fearful’ type with internalizing problems. The temperament types were highly stable over time (72 % stability across 1 year). Changes in temperament type were associated with parenting: increases in the probability of belonging to the typical type were associated with increases in positive and decreases in negative behavior. Increases in the probability of belonging to the fearful and expressive type were associated with decreases in positive parenting. Temperament types are highly stable in toddlerhood, while changes are associated with parenting behavior.

Abstract

In this study, we investigate whether changes in child social cognitive functioning and parenting are the mechanisms through which an individually delivered real‐world child intervention, Stay Cool Kids, aimed at preventing externalizing problem behavior in high‐risk elementary school children, induces changes in child behavior. Moreover, we tested whether mediation was moderated by child characteristics (gender and personality). The sample consisted of 264 fourth‐grade children displaying externalizing behavior (TRF t‐score > 60). Forty‐eight schools were randomly assigned to the intervention or no‐intervention control condition. The results of mediation analyses provided evidence for child positive self‐perception and maternal involvement as working mechanisms of the intervention. Child personality factor extraversion moderated the mediating effect of involvement whereas no moderated mediation was found for gender. Working mechanisms of the intervention differ for children with different personality characteristiscs.

120. Parents' Need-related Experiences and Behaviors When Raising a Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Abstract

Abstract Purpose Research suggests that parenting a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) brings about major challenges to parents' own psychological resources. Considered through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2017), parents rearing a child with ASD particularly face challenges to their psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. In turn, these challenges potentially jeopardize parents' capacity to attune to their child. This qualitative study aims to advance insight into (the interplay between) parents' experiences and parenting behaviors when raising a child with ASD, thereby using SDT as a framework to understand how these experiences and behaviors relate to the psychological needs for autonomy, relatedness and competence. Design and Methods Fifteen parents of children with ASD, aged 6 to 17, participated in an interview concerning their behaviors and experiences in raisin their child with ASD. Results Four sets of parental behaviors and five sets of parental experiences were identified, with the majority being relevant to the psychological needs postulated by SDT. Conclusions The findings of this study provide (1) a deeper understanding of the threats and opportunities for the well-being of parents of children with ASD, (2) an in-depth insight into how these parents adjust their parenting behaviors to their child, and (3) an understanding of how parents' need-related experiences and parenting behaviors are dynamically intertwined. Practical Implications By structuring how parents perceive threats and opportunities when raising a child with ASD within the SDT-framework, important targets for parent-support are identified. 121. Parenting and Psychosocial Development in Youth with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, and Down Syndrome: a Cross-Disability Comparison

Abstract

Parents play an important role in supporting their child’s social, behavioral, and emotional development. In the past decade, research on parenting in general populations increasingly relied on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to better understand the association between parenting behaviors and child behavioral outcomes. In populations of children with a developmental disability, however, very little research has examined parenting behaviors from an SDT perspective. This study examines associations between parenting dimensions (responsiveness, autonomy support, psychological control) and children’s psychosocial outcomes (behavioral problems and psychosocial strengths) in and across four specific groups. Parents of children between 7 and 15 years old with autism spectrum disorder (n= 95), cerebral palsy (n= 121), Down syndrome (n= 73), and without any known disability (n= 120) rated their parenting and their child’s behaviors. Group comparisons indicated that mean levels of parenting did not vary widely across groups. By contrast, salient differences in behavioral presentations were observed, with parents of children with ASD reporting the most behavioral problems and the least psychosocial strengths. Multi-group structural equation models revealed similar, SDT-predicted relations between parenting dimensions and psychosocial development in each group. Three structural effects were found: whereas higher levels of psychologically controlling related to more externalizing problems, higher levels of responsive as well as autonomy-supportive parenting were associated with more psychosocial strengths. These results confirm that need-supportive parenting is related to beneficial outcomes and that need-thwarting socialization is related to maladaptive development in and across youth growing up with and without special needs.

In the present study the results of two meta-analyses on the effectiveness of individually delivered indicated school-based interventions for externalizing behavior problems at elementary schools are presented. A distinction was made between studies that evaluated effects of interventions with only an individual component ( k = 11 studies, n = 738 children, d = .30), and studies on interventions that included both individual and additional components ( k = 13 studies, n = 1156 children, d = .30). Both types of individually delivered school-based interventions reduced externalizing behavior in at-risk children. Moderator analyses showed individual interventions with additional components to be most beneficial for younger children. The variability in effectiveness of interventions indicates that schools need to carefully select evidence-based programs for their specific population.

In dit onderzoek is met behulp van een niet-traditionele methode, namelijk de reliable change index, onderzocht of het opvoedingsondersteuningsprogramma Home-Start tot veranderingen leidde in de gezinnen die daaraan deelnamen. We hebben ons op drie onderzoeksvragen gericht. (1) of er reliable change was bereikt; (2) of de veranderingen klinisch significant waren, en (3) welke gezinnen de grootste kans hadden om betekenisvol te veranderen. Home-Start gezinnen bleken reliable change, betekenisvolle verandering, te laten zien voor moederlijk welzijn, voor opvoedingsgedrag en kingedrag waren de resultaten echter niet eenduidig. Een substantieel deel van de Home-Start moeders liet klinisch significante veranderingen zien voor alle afhankelijke variabelen. Moeders die er voor aanvang van Home-Start het ernstigst aan toe waren, hadden de grootste kans om betekenisvol te veranderen, terwijl moeders die er het best aan toe waren voordat Home-Start startte de grootste kans hadden om te functioneren op het niveau van een normgroep.

Abstract

Building on prior cross-sectional work, this longitudinal study evaluated the proposition that maternal and paternal overreactive and authoritative parenting mediates the effect of child personality characteristics on externalizing behavior. Data from the Flemish Study on Parenting, Personality, and Problem Behavior were used in a moderated mediation analysis (N=434). Teachers rated children's Big Five characteristics, fathers and mothers rated their parenting, and 3 years later, children rated their externalizing behavior. Mediational analysis revealed both direct and indirect effects. Higher levels of Extraversion and lower levels of Benevolence were related directly to higher levels of child externalizing behavior. Higher levels of paternal authoritative parenting and lower levels of maternal overreactivity were related to lower scores on externalizing behavior. In addition, the relation between Benevolence, Emotional Stability, and externalizing behavior was partially mediated by parental overreactivity. Conscientiousness had an indirect effect on externalizing behavior through paternal authoritative parenting. Relations were not moderated by child gender. This study is of theoretical interest because the results demonstrate that parenting is a mediating mechanism that accounts for associations between personality and externalizing behavior

Associations between personality characteristics and parenting (i.e., Control and Warmth vs. Anger) and family contexts (i.e., Experienced Family Stress, Marital Conflict and Parental Consistency) were investigated. Personality characteristics were found to be related to parenting (in particular, Parental Warmth vs. Anger) but not to family contexts. Parents who reported more Parental Warmth (and less Anger) in interactions had children with higher Agreeableness, Conscientiousness and Emotional Stability and with lower Irritability and Dependency. Parental Control was positively related to children's Dependency and negatively to children's Conscientiousness. Compared to fathers, mothers exerted more Control. Differences in parenting and family contexts were related to the mode of inheritance but not to IQ, age, gender, and cardiac defects. Families in which a familial deletion occurred reported higher levels of Marital Conflict and lower Warmth in the parent-child interactions. 17 p.

Voor basisschoolleerlingen met agressief gedrag zijn effectieve interventies nodig om de ontwikkeling naar ernstiger gedragsproblemen te doorbreken. In deze rct is de effectiviteit van Alles Kidzzz onderzocht, een preventieve geïndiceerde individuele interventie op school, gericht op vermindering van agressie via het verbeteren van cognitieve vaardigheden. At random werden 48 scholen toegewezen aan de interventie- of controlegroep. Er participeerden 264 kinderen uit groep zes, genomineerd door leerkrachten vanwege verhoogd externaliserend gedrag. Alles Kidzzz leidde tot minder reactieve en proactieve agressie, gerapporteerd door kinderen, moeders, vaders of leerkrachten (effectgrootten: .11 tot .32). Op basis van leerkrachtbeoordelingen op de voor- en nameting werd een klinisch significante verandering in externaliserend gedrag gevonden: na deelname aan Alles Kidzzz verminderde externaliserend probleemgedrag tot subklinisch/normaal niveau. Kinderen rapporteerden een positievere zelfperceptie en een aspect van sociaal-cognitief functioneren veranderde. Etniciteit en geslacht modereerden enkele door het kind en leerkracht gerapporteerde interventie-effecten. Resultaten tonen volgens verschillende informanten onder condities van de dagelijkse praktijk effectiviteit van Alles Kidzzz aan.

Item does not contain fulltext, This study examined whether changes in children's self-reported Big Five dimensions are represented by (developmental) personality types, using a cohort-sequential design with three measurement occasions across 5 years (four cohorts, 9–12 years at T1; N = 523). Correlates of, and gender differences in, type membership were examined. Latent class growth modeling yielded three personality types: Resilients (highest initial levels on all Big Five), Overcontrollers (lowest Extraversion, Emotional Stability, Imagination), and Undercontrollers (lowest Benevolence, Conscientiousness). Gender differences in type membership were small. Warm parenting, but not overreactive discipline, in childhood was associated with type membership. The types differed in adjustment problems by the end of middle adolescence. Personality change more likely occurs at the level of dimensions within types than in type membership.

Abstract

Deze studie onderzocht de relatie tussen persoonlijkheid en externaliserend probleemgedrag bij jongens die verblijven binnen een klinische- en niet klinische setting. De onderzoekspopulatie bestond uit jongens die verbleven binnen Stichting Jeugdzorg Sint Joseph (SJSJ) en thuiswonende jongens die regulier middelbaar onderwijs volgden (controlegroep). De relatie tussen persoonlijkheid en extrenaliserend probleemgedrag bij deze twee groepen werd onderzocht door middel van de Youth Self Report (YSR) en de Hierarchical Personality Inventory for Children (HiPIC), twee zelfrapportage vragenlijsten. Voor het onderzoek werden 46 jongens uit de klinische setting en 46 jongens uit de controlegroep, tussen de 12 en 22 jaar onderzocht. De HiPIC meet vijf persoonlijkheidsdimensies: emotionele stabiliteit, extraversie, welwillendheid, consciëntieusheid en vindingrijkheid. De YSR meet agressief en delinquent gedrag. Dit onderzoek laat verschillen zien in de persoonlijkheidsdimensies consciëntieusheid en extraversie tussen de controlegroep en de SJSJ-groep. De controle groep scoort significant hoger op de persoonlijkheidsdimensie extraversie en de SJSJ-groep scoort significant hoger op consciëntieusheid. Daarnaast laat deze studie ook verschillen zien in externaliserend probleemgedrag tussen de twee groepen, op beide subschalen. Ook is er een verband gevonden tussen de persoonlijkheidsdimensies en externaliserend probleem gedrag, maar alleen voor de SJSJ-groep. In controlegroep werd geen verband gevonden. Het onderzoek toont aan dat er een positief verband is gevonden tussen de persoonlijkheidsdimensie extraversie en externaliserend probleemgedrag en een negatief verband tussen de persoonlijkheidsdimensie welwillendheid en externaliserend probleemgedrag. De resultaten van dit onderzoek benadrukken nogmaals hoe belangrijk deze factoren zijn voor een betere diagnostiek, preventie en behandeling van jongens binnen justitiële jeugdinrichtingen.

Abstract

Achtergrond: Het verschijnen voor de kinderrechter binnen het civiele jeugdrecht is, net als in het strafrecht, voor veel jeugdigen een ingrijpende gebeurtenis, daar eventueel op te leggen maatregel grote gevolgen kan hebben. Afgevraagd kan worden hoe de kinderrechter naar de voor hem/haar voorliggende zaak aankijkt en in hoeverre het kinderverhoor in deze van betekenis is. Doel: Het doel van dit onderzoek is om de bejegening van de kinderrechter, gedurende het kinderverhoor, in beeld te brengen. Methode: Middels observatielijsten zijn er zijn 30 observaties van de kinderrechter tijdens het kinderverhoor van jeugdigen tussen de 12 en de 18 jaar. Daarnaast is er onderscheid gemaakt in groepen en zijn de resultaten vergeleken op leeftijd, geslacht en het soort maatregel. Resultaten: De resultaten laten zien dat de aanwezigen in de rechtszaal altijd worden voorgesteld en de kinderrechters over het algemeen gebruik maken van goede bejegeningtechnieken. Er wordt met name rekening gehouden met de bejegening bij de groep jeugdigen jonger dan 15 jaar. Doordat er geen vaststaande protocollen worden gehanteerd verschilt het kinderverhoor per kinderrechter. Conclusie: De kinderrechter heeft een pedagogische rol toegedicht dat bepalend kan worden genoemd. Daar de kinderrechter de enige persoon is die de jeugdige in het proces heeft gehoord en een kans kan geven.
