Abstract

We present mid-infrared (MIR) observations of the Type II-plateau supernova (SN) 2004et, obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope between 64 and 1406 days past explosion. Late-time optical spectra are also presented. For the period 300-795 days past explosion, we argue that the spectral energy distribution (SED) of SN 2004et comprises (1) a hot component due to emission from optically thick gas, as well as free-bound radiation; (2) a warm component due to newly formed, radioactively heated dust in the ejecta; and (3) a cold component due to an IR echo from the interstellar-medium dust of the host galaxy, NGC 6946. There may also have been a small contribution to the IR SED due to free-free emission from ionized gas in the ejecta. We reveal the first-ever spectroscopic evidence for silicate dust formed in the ejecta of a supernova. This is supported by our detection of a large, but progressively declining, mass of SiO. However, we conclude that the mass of directly detected ejecta dust grew to no more than a few times 10-4 M sun. We also provide evidence that the ejecta dust formed in comoving clumps of fixed size. We argue that, after about two years past explosion, the appearance of wide, box-shaped optical line profiles was due to the impact of the ejecta on the progenitor circumstellar medium and that the subsequent formation of a cool, dense shell was responsible for a later rise in the MIR flux. This study demonstrates the rich, multifaceted ways in which a typical core-collapse supernova and its progenitor can produce and/or interact with dust grains. The work presented here adds to the growing number of studies that do not support the contention that SNe are responsible for the large mass of observed dust in high-redshift galaxies.

105. Resistance training using eccentric overload induces early adaptations in skeletal muscle size

Abstract

Fifteen healthy men performed a 5-week training program comprising four sets of seven unilateral, coupled concentric-eccentric knee extensions 2-3 times weekly. While eight men were assigned to training using a weight stack (WS) machine, seven men trained using a flywheel (FW) device, which inherently provides variable resistance and allows for eccentric overload. The design of these apparatuses ensured similar knee extensor muscle use and range of motion. Before and after training, maximal isometric force (MVC) was measured in tasks non-specific to the training modes. Volume of all individual quadriceps muscles was determined by magnetic resonance imaging. Performance across the 12 exercise sessions was measured using the inherent features of the devices. Whereas MVC increased (P < 0.05) at all angles measured in FW, such a change was less consistent in WS. There was a marked increase (P < 0.05) in task-specific performance (i.e., load lifted) in WS. Average work showed a non-significant 8.7% increase in FW. Quadriceps muscle volume increased (P < 0.025) in both groups after training. Although the more than twofold greater hypertrophy evident in FW (6.2%) was not statistically greater than that shown in WS (3.0%), all four individual quadriceps muscles of FW showed increased (P < 0.025) volume whereas in WS only m. rectus femoris was increased (P < 0.025). Collectively the results of this study suggest more robust muscular adaptations following flywheel than weight stack resistance exercise supporting the idea that eccentric overload offers a potent stimuli essential to optimize the benefits of resistance exercise.

Abstract

The article presents a study on the activity of essential oils (EO) extracted from spices as a cure to bovine mastitis. Using 32 isolates from Laboratório de Bacteriologia Veterinária in Brazil, antimicrobial effect and the bacteria's resistance to some known antibiotics were evaluated. The EO from Essential7.com show that ginger, basil and sage has no antibacterial activity, compared to oregano, thyme and Mexican oregano that are considered as a cure to bovine mastitis.

Abstract

We report the serendipitous discovery of a population of low-mass, pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the direction of the Wolf–Rayet/O-star binary system γ[sup 2] Vel and the Vela OB2 association. We argue that γ[sup 2] Vel and the low-mass stars are truly associated and approximately coeval, and that both are at distances between 360 and 490 pc, disagreeing at the 2σ level with the recent Hipparcos parallax of γ[sup 2] Vel, but consistent with older distance estimates. Our results clearly have implications for the physical parameters of the γ[sup 2] Vel system, but also offer an exciting opportunity to investigate the influence of high-mass stars on the mass function and circumstellar disc lifetimes of their lower mass PMS siblings. Abstract

The express formalization of the constitutional science inspired Hervada to seek the fundamental principles of the canonical system in the principles of radical equality, variety, and hierarchy. The hierarchical profile, respecting the condition of the faithful and their fundamental rights, forms the base of the institutional structure. This analysis explores the possible differentiation between the institutional principle (the founding will to establish a transpersonal and permanent entity) and the hierarchical principle (the reservation of certain public functions, and the internal graduation of the ordo). The institutional nature of the Church aids our comprehension of the consistency and development of ecclesiastical organization. Organic coordination and the difference between functions further clarify the meaning and reach of the hierarchy. Still today, Hervada’s teaching in this area remains current and stimulating, especially in reference to the ministerial nature of governance, the internal cohesion and unity of the ordo, and the direct connection between hierarchical action and the goods of communion.

Abstract

We have addressed the problem of determining a reliable experimental descriptorof surface chemical reactivity by measuring Pd and Ru 3d5/2core-level shifts of the Pdn/Ru(0001) pseudomorphic overlayer system (n= 0−3) by high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We find a linear relationship between the calculated theoretical changes of the d-band center position projected on each Ru and Pd atomic layer (which is, according to the Hammer and Norskov d-band model, a good theoretical descriptorof chemical reactivity) and the corresponding core-level shifts, both for the Ru atomic planes and for the Pd overlayers. Core-level shifts, therefore, should be considered as reliable experimental descriptorsof chemical reactivity in the same sense (and with similar limitations) of the theoretical descriptord-band center. Final-state effect contributions to the shifts do not obscure this trend.
