Arithmetical and relational operations in a machine must be designed in such a way that it enables us to make reliable, portable, efficient software. Therefore, operations must deliver either the correct result or an indication (trap, flag bit) that the operation has not been correctly performed. Incorrect results should be best possible, in order to increase software robustness.

A Mobile Telemetry feature was a data gathering tool used by Bell Laboratories during the Service Test phase of the Chicago Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) Developmental Cellular System. This feature was the result of a need to gather basic data on performance of the mobile telephone equipment and, in particular, on certain interactions of the user with the system. For this purpose, the mobile monitors many of its own actions and telemeters information to the Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO). When a telemetry equipped mobile is enabled, it can make autonomous requests for the system's retrieval of telemetry information at periodic intervals determined by the system. Upon receiving the request, the MTSO commands the mobile unit to transmit the telemetry information. The actual telemetry data, along with any of the events associated with the request and retrieval process, is recorded by the Data Retrieval System (DRS). The DRS is a mini-computer based system connected to the MTSO for collecting and recording events occurring within the cellular system's No. 1 ESS switch. This paper addresses the specifics of the telemetry function, as implemented in the mobile unit and in the system, as well as the types of data that can be obtained or derived from this operating feature.

A flexible test system is studied and proposed to provide an extensive evaluation and testing capability for telemetry products. A distributed computer controlled, modular unit test system using Computer Automated Measurement and Control (CAMAC) standard hardware and compatible software is selected because of its flexibility of application and long term cost effectiveness.

The technical capabilities of satellite systems traditionally are divided into two categories: 1) Remote sensing. 2) Data transmission and platform location.

A computer code called CCETS for the evaluation of telemetry system performance is presented. The program was developed over several years and represents a major aid in the development, design, and analysis of implantable telemetry systems which involve radio frequency powered coils for the establishment of bi-directional communication links with implantable tissue stimulators. The program includes three main modules: preprocessing, solution, and postprocessing. The program currently can run on any VAX computer and will soon be available for IBM or compatible microcomputers. It contains several desirable features which enable the user to reach efficiently an optimum design, verify it, and obtain telemetry performance before laboratory time and effort is spent. Discussion of the concepts involved and a description of the system design of a telemetry magnetic tape editing machine for the GE, MSVD Data Processing Center. One or two dozen telemetry tapes recorded in the field at the test range receiving sites are reduced at the processing center by an automatic editor to one tape containing the best data signal for a complete test. The telemetry editing problem was studied to derive the principles for a feasible system. Telemetry reduction experience showed that an improvement over the slow manual editing method was needed to reduce large volumes of redundant data rapidly. The editor performs automatically with standard IRIG telemetry signals and it does not need added system control signals. The techniques are easily adapted to other applications such as satellite data editing and by extending the principles, improved data gathering systems are possible.

The Simulated Telemetry Data Generation Control Program (STGR) has been designed to provide realistic telemetry data (Fixed Format and Event Items) under card input control. The simulated data will be packed in the same format as the Telemetry Report Message (Message Type #13). In the present version, only the FM/FM telemetry data is simulated. Additional capability to simulate PAM and PCM telemetry data (exclusive of special vehicle-specific payload telemetry) will be incorporated (if desirable) at a future date, when adequate information is available.

A flexible, scaleable and cost-effective medical telemetry system is described for monitoring sleep-related disorders in the home environment. The system was designed and built for real-time data acquisition and processing, allowing for additional use in intensive care unit scenarios where rapid medical response is required in case of emergency. It comprises a wearable body area network of Zigbee-compatible wireless sensors worn by the subject, a central database repository residing in the medical centre and thin client workstations located at the subject's home and in the clinician's office. The system supports heterogeneous setup configurations, involving a variety of data acquisition sensors to suit several medical applications. All telemetry data is securely transferred and stored in the central database under the clinicians' ownership and control.

Ultrasonic telemetry systems are increasingly used in studies on the behavioral ecology of marine and freshwater animals. Systems based on automated omnidirectional receivers in particular offer a powerful and relatively cheap tool to provide presence/absence data of tagged animals, but they do not provide the geographic position of the transmitters. In this paper a new software called FiSAR (Fish-finder Software for Automated Receivers), developed for application with Vemco VR1/VR2 receivers, is presented (available at www.marecofree.org/download.asp). FiSAR is able to manage large datasets as well as to calculate the activity center of each transmitter from simple presence/absence data. This is achieved through (1) the collation of the data collected by each receiver in a unique MS Access cross-table, and (2) the use of the Simpfendorfer et al. (2002) algorithm. The resulting cross-table can be easily exported to most statistical packages for further analysis.

To answer the need for analysis of the data acquired by the new generation of portable instrumentation, we have developed a portable computer system. This system combines a powerful central processor with a printer, digital tape deck, bubble memory, and a battery pack in a compact package weighing less than 11 lb.

This paper describes the telemetry system for the satellite UOSAT) designed and built in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering of the University of Surrey. The function of the telemetry system is to encode outputs of sensors, located around the spacecraft, into specified data formats prior to transmission via downlink transmitters. In addition, information relating to the status sub-systems and data from on-board experiments require similar encoding. The basic philosophy of the telemetry system aims at providing a continuous and comprehensive surveillance of spacecraft systems for engineering purposes and a number of data formats to for different ground station facilities.
