Abstract

Borealis announces that two separate collaborations with long-standing value chain partners have resulted in new, fully recyclable flexible packaging formats, which incorporate 50% post-consumer recyclate (PCR). The use of new low-density polyethylene (LDPE) PCR grades developed and produced by mechanical recycling expert Ecoplast, a member of the Borealis Group, have made it possible to achieve a 35% carbon footprint reduction in raw material production when compared to virgin polyolefins, whilst maintaining the same film thickness as with virgin materials. Co-operation in the spirit of EverMinds is accelerating plastics circularity by fulfilling industry demand for sustainable flexible packaging solutions with lower environmental impact. Plastotecnica, a major European producer of polyethylene (PE) packaging; and ACMI SpA, a leading Italian manufacturer of high-tech and flexible bottling and packaging lines and machines, worked together with Borealis to incorporate more PCR material into the multilayer shrink wrap of a beverage multipack. In developing the application, the partners were able to identify the ideal material solution to achieve optimal mechanical and packaging performance (particularly pack stability) whilst obtaining outstanding film optics and printability: the soon-to-be-launched Borcycle M LDPE PCR grade CWT 100VL with very low gel content; BorShape FX1003, a mechanical booster based on the proprietary Borstar technology; and Anteo FK2715, a key ingredient for ensuring higher performance and more sustainable multilayer applications. The result is a fully recyclable film containing 50% PCR and a 35% lower carbon footprint in the raw material production process. The shrink film packaging trials were conducted by ACMI. As a member of the Rani Group, a leading Nordic producer of smart packaging solutions, Rani Plast used its film and production expertise to work together with polymers experts at Borealis to develop a film structure for more sustainable flexible packaging used for tissue paper products such as kitchen roll (paper towels) and toilet paper. As an improved version of its predecessor NAV 101, the soon-to-be-launched Borcycle M LDPE PCR grade NAV 101L is best in class when it comes to balancing gel performance and circularity. Manufactured using household post-consumer and commercial waste, its gel content is significantly lower in order to provide excellent processability. It also offers excellent printability and optics. Combined with the Borstar technology-based mechanical booster BorShape FX1003, the grade delivers optimal mechanical performance, thus enabling the incorporation of more than 50% PCR content without increasing film thickness. Natural and synthetic nanostructured polymers in the form of fibers are used in medical and cosmetic applications. One of the main advantages of the electrospinning method is its flexibility, which allows to use airflow in the vicinity of a spinneret to increase production. The acceleration of solvent evaporation rate allows the solution feed rate to be increased. Experimental results confirmed a significant increase in the production of hyaluronic acid and polyethylene) oxide nanofibers. The increase occurs when higher airflow velocity and higher airflow temperature are used, causing a decrease in the partial pressure of solvent vapours and relative humidity when a supercritical intensity of the electrostatic field is applied. BASF and 3T Industries Sdn Bhd, a leading recycling company in Malaysia dealing with post-industrial and post-consumer recyclates, are helping pineapple plantations in Malaysia to increase their yields and save resources. For the first time, 3T Industries has applied BASF's IrgaCycle UV033 DD to enhance 100% recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) sheets used as protectors for pineapples. While pineapples require a warm and humid climate, they are susceptible to damage from solar radiation and high temperatures (more than 32 degC) which can significantly reduce marketable yield and cut deep into a grower's profit. Symptoms include sunburn or bleaching which are visible as yellow-white skin that turns pale grey or brown upon damage to the tissue underneath. This damaged tissue is susceptible to disease and infestation. The HDPE protector shields the fruit from direct sunlight while still allowing photosynthesis to occur. Previously, 3T Industries used a combination of antioxidants and light stabilizers to achieve the performance requirements stipulated by the grower - the HDPE protectors needed to last through the intended service lifetime of four seasons. IrgaCycle offers a one-pack solution that is immediately available for the recycler without the need for further premixing. It is also more efficient at lower concentrations compared to traditional antioxidant systems and reduces the overall quantity of additives required. This results in easy and accurate dosing, improved product quality, as well as upgraded recyclate for use in long-term applications. BASF not only provided 3T Industries with the suitable additive solution, but also the technical recommendations to stabilize the recycled polymers during processing and outdoor weathering. This is important as an effective and sustainable application of recycled materials depends on, amongst others, the optimization of process conditions and modifying agents. Launched in 2021, IrgaCycle consists of a series of plastic additive formulations, which enable recycled plastics to be reused for the production of high-value plastics in combination with virgin materials. The additive solution addresses specific quality issues associated with recycled resins, such as limited processability, poor long-term thermal stability and insufficient protection from outdoor weathering. The IrgaCycle range is offered as part of the VALERAS portfolio. In addition to enabling plastics circularity with IrgaCycle, VALERAS solutions bring significant sustainability value to plastic applications by improving durability, saving energy, as well as reducing waste and emissions. State-owned TurkmenGaz is expanding production capacity at the operator's Kiyanly gas chemical complex in the Turkmenbashi district of Balkan Province in western Turkmenistan. Per a resolution signed by Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov in May 2022, the operator will build a grassroots unit for production of isobutane at the Kiyanly complex, Turkmengaz said in an official government release late on 12 May 2022. Obtained from a feedstock of natural gas, the proposed unit will produce high-octane isobutane that can be used by oil refineries as fuel-blending component, as well as a refrigerant to reduce energy consumption in modern refrigerators, according to the operator. The isobutane recovered from the new unit also can be used as a filler in aerosol cans, gas lighters, and gas-lighter refills, the government of Turkmenistan said in a separate official release on 10 May 2022. While neither Turkmengaz nor the Turkmen government revealed details regarding the proposed capacity or timeline for startup of the new unit, both parties said the unit will contribute to further maximizing the complex's range of production of high-value products from a hydrocarbon feedstock. The complex's production of isobutane will contribute to helping Turkmenistan fulfill its national obligation-as part of the country's broader project jointly implemented with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization-under the Montreal Protocol to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, which aims to safeguard the ozone layer by reducing use of ozone-depleting chemicals in favour of more environmentally friendly substances, Turkmengaz and the Turkmen government said. Initially commissioned in Oct 2018, the $3.4-bn Kiyanly gas chemical complex-the largest in the region-processes 5 bn cu m/y natural gas via a gas separation unit equipped with Toyo Engineering Corp's Coreflux technology and BASF SE's Oase technology to produce 386,000 tonnes/y of polyethylene and 81,000 tonnes/y of polypropylene, with up to 4.5 bn cu m/y of remaining marketable gas shipped via pipeline for commercial use. To meet the challenge of procuring new sources of natural polymers without affecting the demands for food crops, a thermoplastic unripe banana flour (TPF) was produced, characterized, and blended with metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene (mPE). Both the pulp and peels of unripe banana were used to produce flour, whose stability and thermoplastic properties allowed blending with mPE in high proportions, that is, 50, 60, 70, and 80%. The blends were injection molded, and the thermal, mechanical, microstructural, and infrared spectral properties of the resulting samples were characterized. The blend containing 50% TPF yielded a robust, elastic, and nonbrittle material. Maleic anhydride grafting on mPE (mPE-g-MA) promoted interphase adhesion of the polymers and homogeneity in the blends. Grafting also influenced the mechanical, thermal, and microstructural properties of the blends. A series of MC nylon-6/ polyethylene oxide (PEO) blends were prepared via in situ polymerization. It was found that addition of PEO delayed the polymerization process of caprolactam. The apparent activation energy and pre-exponential factor increased, indicating that the polymerization reaction became difficult with increasing PEO content. The stress-strain curves of the blends presented strain hardening behavior and increasing elastic deformation stress plateau at low PEO content. Nonisothermal DSC and XRD tests indicated that addition of PEO led to a decrease of the crystallization ability of the nylon-6 matrix by reducing crystal grain size and crystallinity, whereas the crystallization ability of the PEO phase was improved. No co-crystal formed between the two phases. PEO with low content only existed as amorphous state, while with increasing PEO content, PEO can crystallize gradually, forming interfibrillar segregation first, and then forming interspherilute segregation of the blend independently. By addition of PEO, the fracture surface of the blend became rough, displaying character of tough fracture. The interface between nylon-6 phase and PEO phase was diffused, and the nylon-6 matrix around the PEO particles presented fibrous structure, indicating the good compatibility between them. A series of poly(ethylene 2, 6-naphthalate) (PEN) copolyesters was synthesized using three monomers (newly prepared 1, 4-bis[(methoxycarbonylethoxy)methyl]benzene, dimethyl 2, 6-naphthalenedicarboxylate, and ethylene glycol) with various molar ratios to investigate the effects of these compositions on thermal properties of the copolyesters. Copolyesters having weight average molecular weights of 11,000-22,000 were obtained by melt polycondensation in the presence of metallic catalysts. The structures and thermal properties of the resulting random PEN copolyesters were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, differential scanning calorimetry, thermalmechanical analyzer, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results of thermal measurements revealed that thermal properties depended on the corresponding new diacid comonomer content of the PEN copolyesters. 129. SIBUR to repay NWF loan ahead of time

SIBUR is planning an early and full repayment of bonds of ZapSibNeftekhim which were issued to finance the construction of ZapSibNeftekhim and in which the Russian National Welfare Fund (NWF) invested $1.75 bn in 2015. The total budget of SIBUR's polymer facility project stood at $8.8 bn. Previously, the Russian government made amendments to the Requirements for Financial Assets Used as Investment Vehicles for NWF Funds approved by Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No 18 dated 19 Jan 2008. The amendments enabled issuers of bonds related to self-sufficient infrastructure projects (the list of which is approved by the Russian government) to early repurchase their bonds that had been placed to attract funding from the NWF to finance infrastructure projects. In 2020, SIBUR successfully completed the construction of ZapSibNeftekhim, Russia's largest petrochemical facility and one of the world's biggest basic polymer production sites, ahead of schedule. The facility's launch boosted import substitution of polyethylene and polypropylene and contributed to the development of the polymer processing segment. In certain customer industries, import substitution potential reaches up to 85-95%. Polyethylene and polypropylene are widely used in the construction, healthcare, car manufacturing, utilities and other industries. The commissioning of ZapSibNeftekhim played a significant role in ramping up Russia's non-commodity exports under the International Cooperation and Exports national programme. With the launch of ZapSib in 2020, SIBUR accounted for over 16% of the country's non-commodity export growth. From the investment date up to now, SIBUR's coupon payments on ZapSibNeftekhim bonds have added $290.5 M, or Roubles 19.4 bn, to the federal budget. In this study, the effectiveness of three random copolymers based on blocks of poly(lactic acid) and polyethylene (PLA-PE) used as compatibilizer in PLA and high density polyethylene blends (PLA/HDPE) was evaluated in terms of thermal and mechanical properties. The compatibilizers were synthesized by different ways: reactive extrusion (C1), ring opening polymerization of lactide with PE with -OH substituent group (PE-OH) as initiator (C2) and polycondensation of lactic acid in presence of PE grafted with maleic anhydride (PE-g-MAH) (C3). The compatibilizers were used in two different proportions (5 and 15 wt%) and their efficiency was compared with a commercial compatibilizer (CO). The blends with C2 compatibilizer exhibited the highest tensile toughness (350% of increment compared with neat PLA/PE) because of the morphology attained. However, it was found that a relationship exists between the improvement of the compatibility and the loss of the thermal stability (-28 °C) in PLA/HDPE blends. POLYM. ENG. Saudi Arabian Basic Industries Corp (SABIC) and ExxonMobil Corp have reached official startup of their 50-50 joint venture Gulf Coast Growth Ventures LLC's (GCGV) ethane cracker and derivatives complex in Portland, San Patricio County, TX, US, near Corpus Christi. Commercially operating as of 20 Jan 2022, GCGV's complex-including its 1.8-M tonnes/y ethane cracker, 1.1 M-tonnes/y monoethylene glycol (MEG) unit, and two polyethylene units with combined capacity of 1.3 M tonnes/y-will help meet growing global demand for performance products with its production of raw materials used for packaging, agricultural film, construction materials, clothing, and automotive coolants, SABIC and ExxonMobil said in separate releases. Start of commercial operations at the site follows mechanical completion of the complex's units in Jul 2021 and confirmation in Jun 2021 by Paul Fritsch-GCGV's plant manager-that all units at the site would enter the commissioning phase by end-2021. Completed ahead of schedule and below budget, GCGV's complex-which marks SABIC and ExxonMobil's first JV in the Americas-was formed in 2018 to take advantage of the US Gulf Coast's existing infrastructure to capture competitive pricing for US natural gas feedstock and access to rising demand for ethylene-based products in overseas export markets. Electrospun poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/hydrated iron oxide (HIO)/sodium alginate (SA) composite nanofibers with high ultimate tensile strength of ~31.6 ± 0.4 MPa and good morphologies, such as smooth surface appearance and average diameter of 159 ± 55 to 475 ± 55 nm, were produced in the range of 50% HIO, with significant bacteria decontamination property (92.5% removal of Vibrio vulnificus) from high specific surface area and absorption property, and 10% SA, with antibacterial property, based on PEO polymer content. This approach, using HIO and SA, is an effective method to possess the multi-functional properties such as anti-bacterial/bacterial decontamination properties and good mechanical property for various applications in clinical, food, environmental, biomedical, protective clothing, and other areas. Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)/multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared by dispersion of MWCNTs in aqueous solution using half neutralized sodium salt of sebacic acid as a modifier. The physical interaction of half neutralized sodium salt of sebacic acid with MWCNT (cation-π interaction) has been established by using Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopic analyses. Such interaction helps in debundling the MWCNTs and resulted in a better dispersion in PEO matrix as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Addition of MWCNT significantly improves the storage modulus in rheological measurements as well as in dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The crystallization behaviors of the composites made with the unmodified and modified MWCNTs were investigated. The modified MWCNT-based composites shows large number of spherulite with smaller size compared to those observed in unmodified MWCNT-based composite. POLYM. ENG. Abstract

A novel high oil-absorbing resin, P(EPDM/α-MSt/ITA), was synthesized by suspension copolymerization with ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM), α-methylstyrene (α-MSt), and itaconic acid (ITA) as monomers, benzoyl peroxide as initiator, and divinylbenzene as crosslink agent in this study. By using methods such as infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy, we studied the oil-absorbing resin structure, oil-absorption rate, oil-absorption saturation time, and submicroscopic structure of oil-absorption resin after oil absorption. The experiment results show that the highest oil absorptivity of the resin was about 21.9 g/g in diesel oil, obviously increasing the oil absorptive properties by the addition of itaconic acid as reaction monomer. We can draw a conclusion from scanning electron microscopy observation of sample after oil absorption that the oil-absorption resin was filled with diesel oil, and a kind of morphology structure similar with embossment can be produced during the oil-absorbing process. The oil-absorbing resin was used repeatedly through the extraction by ethanol. Experiment result proved to have little effect on oil-absorption properties. Otherwise, the oil-absorption rate constant K of novel high oil-absorbing resin was evaluated for diesel oil, and the oil-absorbing process obeyed the first-order kinetics equation. POLYM. ENG. In this study, agave fiber/linear medium density polyethylene composites were manufactured by rotational molding. A laboratory scale biaxial machine was used, where the internal air temperature during the processing cycle was measured. Two sizes of agave fibers (50 and 100 mesh) were used separately and mixed together (50/50) at concentrations varying between 0 and 15 wt%. The initial mixtures were obtained by dry blending, rotomolded under different operation conditions (oven temperature, processing cycle time, and rotational speeds), and the final pieces were compared. For each process condition, a complete morphological analysis was performed to relate with mechanical properties in terms of tensile, impact, and flexural strength. The results show that there is an optimum fiber concentration around 10%, and blending fiber sizes gave better tensile properties than using each size alone. POLYM. ENG. Abstract

Polyethylene (PE) composite coatings were prepared on silicon substrate by electron-beam deposition (EBD) using mixed powders of low-density polyethylene and various dopants (i.e., initiator and inhibitor) as evaporated target. The structural and morphological behaviors of PE composite coatings were investigated in dependence of initiator and inhibitor by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscope. Free-radical polymerization and cationic polymerization could be observed in the formation process of PE composite coatings by EBD. The initiating system of [AlCl.sub.3] and benzoyl peroxide as well as the inhibiting system of diphenylamine and hydroquinone used in EBD, in comparison with conventional synthesis methods, exhibited different effect on reaction mechanism of PE composite coatings. These results might contribute to the synthesis of polymer coatings with expectant molecule structure and controllable surface morphology. POLYM. ENG. Problem statement: From the early days of, researchers have developed electronic models of neurons designed to emulate neural behavior with electrical signals that mimic in some ways the measured potentials of biological neurons. Researchers interested in fabricating artificial neurons have long sought a simple and techniques to produce devices that efficiently store synaptic weights, which is behind holding a particular state in relation to conductance parameters. As Engineers become closer to realizing accurate hardware models of neurons, the need for a simple analog memory device grows correspondingly. To determine the storage characteristics of polyethylene oxide based polymer as the base material for high charge storage analogue neural switch. Approach: Various devices prepared under controlled conditions. Each device tested for its impedance characteristics as a function of both frequency and temperature. Mathematical model developed to account for the obtained characteristics. Results: The heat treated devices showed stability, repeatability and ability to store enough charge for long time periods. Impedance analysis proved a similar response to the actual neural switches. Conclusion: The symmetrical behavior for such devices opened a wide application area for the manufacturing of low and high frequency analogue devices for intelligent system applications.
