Abstract

A nearly single cycle intense terahertz (THz) pulse with peak electric and magnetic fields of 0.5 MV/cm and 0.16 T, respectively, excites both modes of spin resonances in the weak antiferromagnet FeBO3. The high frequency quasiantiferromagnetic mode is excited resonantly and its amplitude scales linearly with the strength of the THz magnetic field, whereas the low frequency quasiferromagnetic mode is excited via a nonlinear mechanism that scales quadratically with the strength of the THz electric field and can be regarded as a THz inverse Cotton-Mouton effect. THz optomagnetism is shown to be more energy efficient than similar effects reported previously for the near-infrared spectral range.

Abstract

To gain control over magnetic order on ultrafast time scales, a fundamental understanding of the way electron spins interact with the surrounding crystal lattice is required. However, measurement and analysis even of basic collective processes such as spin-phonon equilibration have remained challenging. We directly probe the flow of energy and angularmomentum in the model insulating ferrimagnet yttriumiron garnet. After ultrafast resonant lattice excitation, we observe thatmagnetic order reduces on distinct time scales of 1 ps and 100 ns. Temperature-dependentmeasurements, a spin-coupling analysis, and simulations show that the two dynamics directly reflect two stages of spinlattice equilibration. On the 1-ps scale, spins and phonons reach quasi-equilibrium in terms of energy through phonon-induced modulation of the exchange interaction. This mechanism leads to identical demagnetization of the ferrimagnet’s two spin sublattices and a novel ferrimagnetic state of increased temperature yet unchanged total magnetization. Finally, on the much slower, 100-ns scale, the excess of spin angular momentum is released to the crystal lattice, resulting in full equilibrium. Our findings are relevant for all insulating ferrimagnets and indicate that spin manipulation by phonons, including the spin Seebeck effect, can be extended to antiferromagnets and into the terahertz frequency range.

122. Femtosecond single-shot imaging and control of a laser-induced first-order phase transition in HoFeO3

Abstract

Excitation of antiferromagnetic HoFeO3 with a single 80 fs laser pulse triggers a first-order spin-reorientation phase transition. In the ultrafast kinetics of the transition one can distinguish the processes of impulsive excitation of spin precession, nucleation of the new domain and growth of the nuclei. The orientation of the spins in the nuclei is defined by the phase of the laser-induced coherent spin precession. The growth of the nuclei is further promoted by heating induced by the laser excitation. Hereby we demonstrate that in HoFeO3 coherent control of the spin precession allows an effective control of the route of the heat-induced first-order magnetic phase transition. The theoretical description of the excitation of the spin precession by linearly-polarized ultrashort laser pulses is developed with the sigma model. Abstract

In the past few years, we have been witnessing an increased interest for studying materials properties under non-equilibrium conditions. Several well established spectroscopies for experiments in the energy domain have been successfully adapted to the time domain with sub-picosecond time resolution. Here we show the realization of high resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) with a stable ultrashort X-ray source such as an externally seeded free electron laser (FEL). We have designed and constructed a RIXS experimental endstation that allowed us to successfully measure the d-d excitations in KCoF3 single crystals at the cobalt M-2,M-3-edge at FERMI FEL (Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste, Italy). The FEL-RIXS spectra show an excellent agreement with the ones obtained from the same samples at the MERIXS endstation of the MERLIN beamline at the Advanced Light Source storage ring (Berkeley, USA). We established experimental protocols for performing time resolved RIXS experiments at a FEL source to avoid X ray-induced sample damage, while retaining comparable acquisition time to the synchrotron based measurements. Finally, we measured and modelled the influence of the FEL mixed electromagnetic modes, also present in externally seeded FELs, and the beam transport with similar to 120 meV experimental resolution achieved in the presented RIXS setup.

Abstract

Ferromagnetic-semiconductor heterostructures Ca[F.sub.2]/MnAs/Si(111) have been studied by two complementary magneto-optical techniques: magnetization-induced second harmonic generation and linear magneto-optical Kerr effect. Crystallographic and magnetic contributions to SHG are separated on the base of the rotational anisotropy method. Magnetic hysteresis loops measured by SHG and Kerr effect exhibit different behavior due to different sensitivity of the two optical techniques to the interface, surface and bulk properties. Abstract

We report on optical studies of the thin films of multiferroic hexagonal (P.G. 6mm) rare-earth orthoferrites RFeO3 (R = Ho, Er, Lu) grown epitaxially on a (111)-surface of ZrO2(Y2O3) substrate. The optical absorption study in the range of 0.6-5.6 eV shows that the films are transparent below 1.9 eV; above this energy four broad intense absorption bands are distinguished. The absorption spectra are analyzed taking into account the unusual fivefold coordination of the Fe3+ ion. Temperature dependence of the optical absorption at 4.9 eV shows anomaly at 124 K, which we attribute to magnetic ordering of iron sublattices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic phase diagrams of the hexagonal RmnO[SUB3] (with R = Sc, Y, Ho, In, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) compounds in the magnetic-field/temperature plane are established by linear and nonlinear magneto-optical techniques. Eight different magnetic phases of the Mn[SUP3+] sublattice and at least three different phases of the R[SUP3+] sublattices are distinguished. Phase coexistence and photoinduced modification of the magnetic structure are observed. Optical second harmonic (SH) spectroscopy in the centrosymmetric antiferromagnets CoO, NiO, and KniF[SUB3] reveals pronounced signals below the Néel temperature which couple quadratically to the magnetic order parameter. The SH process roots in resonance enhanced magnetic-dipole and electric-dipole excitations between the 3d levels of the transition-metal ions in the crystal field. Different magnetic structures and differently oriented T and S domains are distinguished with a high degree of discrimination, thus demonstrating the feasibility of nonlinear optical techniques for a spatially resolved investigation of antiferromagnetic crystals and thin films. The phase diagram of hexagonal HoMnO[sub 3] in the magnetic-field/temperature plane is investigated by second harmonic generation (SHG). Four different magnetic phases of the frustrated Mn sublattice are identified on the basis of the selection rules for SHG. In-plane or interplane reordering of Mn spins at the phase boundaries occurs almost independent of each other which leads to a tetracritical point in the phase diagram. Abstract

Using the examples of laser-induced spin-reorientation phase transitions in TmFeO3 and ErFeO3 orthoferrites, we demonstrate that terahertz emission spectroscopy can obtain novel information about ultrafast laser-induced spin dynamics, which is not accessible by more common all-optical methods. The power of the method is evidenced by the fact that, in addition to the expected quasi-ferromagnetic and quasi-antiferromagnetic modes of the iron sublattices, terahertz emission spectroscopy enables detection of a resonance optically excited at an unexpected frequency of ∼0.3–0.35 THz. By recording how the amplitude and phase of the excited oscillations depend on temperature and applied magnetic field, we show that the unexpected mode has all the features of a spin resonance of the Fe3+ ions. We suggest that it can be assigned to transitions between the multiplet sublevels of the 6A1 ground state of the Fe+3 ions occupying rare-earth positions.
