Abstract: Context. NGC 5548 is an X-ray bright Seyfert 1 active galaxy. It exhibits a variety of spectroscopic features in the soft X-ray band, in particular including the absorption by the active galactic nucleus (AGN) outflows of a broad range of ionization states, with column densities up to 1027 m-2, and having speeds up to several thousand kilometers per second. The known emission features are in broad agreement with photoionized X-ray narrow and broad emission line models. Aims. We report on an X-ray spectroscopic study using 1.1 Ms XMM-Newton and 0.9 Ms Chandra grating observations of NGC 5548 spanning two decades. The aim is to search and characterize any potential spectroscopic features in addition to the known primary spectral components that are already modeled in high precision. Methods. For each observation, we modeled the data using a global fit including an intrinsic spectral energy distribution of the AGNs and the known distant X-ray absorbers and emitters. We utilized as much knowledge from previous studies as possible. The fit residuals were stacked and scanned for possible secondary features. Results. We detect a weak unidentified excess emission feature at ~18.4 Å (18.1 Å in the restframe). The feature is seen at > 5s statistical significance taking the look-elsewhere effect into account. No known instrumental issues, atomic transitions, or astrophysical effects can explain this excess. The observed intensity of the possible feature seems to anticorrelate in time with the hardness ratio of the source. However, even though the variability might not be intrinsic, it might be caused by the time-variable obscuration by the outflows. An intriguing possibility is the line emission from charge exchange between a partially ionized outflow and a neutral layer in the same outflow, or in the close environment. Abstract: Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are the most extreme among X-ray binaries in which the compact object, a neutron star or a black hole, accretes matter from the companion star, and exceeds a luminosity of 1039 ergs−1 in the X-ray energy band alone. Despite two decades of studies, it is still not clear whether ULX spectral transitions are due to stochastic variability in the wind or variations in the accretion rate or in the source geometry. The compact object is also unknown for most ULXs. In order to place constraints on to such scenarios and on the structure of the accretion disc, we studied the temporal evolution of the spectral components of the variable source NGC 55 ULX-1. Using recent and archival data obtained with the XMM-Newton satellite, we modelled the spectra with two blackbody components which we interpret as thermal emission from the inner accretion flow and the regions around or beyond the spherization radius. The luminosity–temperature (L–T) relation of each spectral component agrees with the L ∝ T4 relationship expected from a thin disc model, which suggests that the accretion rate is close to the Eddington limit. However, there are some small deviations at the highest luminosities, possibly due to an expansion of the disc and a contribution from the wind at higher accretion rates. Assuming that such deviations are due to the crossing of the Eddington or supercritical accretion rate, we estimate a compact object mass of 6–14 M⊙, favouring a stellar-mass black hole as the accretor.

Abstract: Context. A growing number of transient X-ray obscuration events in type I active galactic nuclei suggest that our line of sight to the central engine is not always free. Multiple X-ray obscuration events were reported in the nearby Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 3227 from 2000 to 2016. In late 2019, another X-ray obscuration event was identified with Swift. Two coordinated target-of-opportunity observations with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) were triggered in November and December 2019 to study this obscuration event. Aims. We aim to constrain the physical properties of the absorbing material (i.e., the obscurer) that caused the X-ray obscuration event in late 2019. We also aim to compare the handful of obscuration events in NGC 3227 and other Seyfert galaxies. Methods. For each observation, we analyzed the time-averaged X-ray spectra collected with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. We performed photoionization modeling with the SPEX code, which allows us to constrain the intrinsic continuum simultaneously with various photoionized absorption and emission components. Results. Similar to previous transient X-ray obscuration events in NGC 3227, the one caught in late 2019 is short-lived (less than five months). If the obscurer has only one photoionized component, the two X-ray observations in late 2019 cannot be explained by the same obscurer that responds to the varying ionizing continuum. Due to the unknown geometry of the obscurer, its number density and distance to the black hole cannot be well constrained. The inferred distance covers at least two orders of magnitude, from the broad-line region to the dusty torus. Unlike some other X-ray obscuration events in Seyfert galaxies, such as NGC 5548 and NGC 3783, no prominent blueshifted, broad absorption troughs were found in the 2019 HST/COS spectra of NGC 3227 when compared with archival UV spectra. 104. Causas de perdas pós-colheita em cultivares de tomates comercializados na Ceasa, Ceará

Abstract: This article analyzed the growth of mulungu (Erythrina velutinaWild) seedlings, subjected The research consisted in identifying the post-harvest losses of tomato cultivars 'Longa Vida' and 'Cajá' commercialized in Ceasa-Ceara, identifying the main difficulties of their commercialization. The actions were evaluated in two stages: Interviews with 50 licensees who sell tomatoes; Evaluation of the main losses of tomato on benches and/or boxes. The fruits, before commercialization, were subjected to sampling analysis containing 899.4 kg in the “Initial Quality” sample, to determine the main damages and 191.8 kg in the “Discard” sample, to determine the real loss of the product. Subsequently, the percentage and average of fruits at different stages of maturation (green, horticultural maturity and fully ripe) were calculated, with mechanical and physiological injuries, phytopathological diseases, pest attack and absence of damage. The cultivar Longa Vida is the most commercialized at Ceasa (70%). Transport is carried out in open trucks (80%) and storage is on benches and/or boxes (86%). For tomato marketing, plastic packaging is used (98%), and incorrect handling is the main factor that makes marketing difficult (32%). In the 'Initial Quality' sampling, 68.99% of the cultivars presented horticultural maturity (47 kg). 18.07% of the most frequent injuries are mechanical (12 kg) and 10.55% to physiological damage (7 kg). Of the total “discard” sampling, about 60.58% (8 kg) of the fruits showed horticultural maturity and 36.43% showed damage due to mechanical injury (48 kg) and 21.90% damage due to pest attack (2.9 kg). Post-harvest losses can be reduced with the implementation and use of refrigerated chambers., A pesquisaconsistiu em identificar as perdas pós-colheita das cultivares de tomate ‘Longa Vida’ e ‘Cajá’ comercializadas na Ceasa-CE, identificando as principais dificuldades de sua comercialização. As ações foram avaliadas em duas etapas: Entrevistas direcionadas a50 permissionários que comercializam o tomate; Avaliação das principais perdas do tomate em bancadas e/ou boxes. Os frutos antes da comercialização, foram submetidos às análises de amostragem contendo 899,4 kg na amostra “Qualidade Inicial”, para determinar os principais danos e 191,8 kg na amostra “Descarte”, para determinar a perda real do produto. Posteriormente, foi calculado a porcentagem e a média dos frutos em diferentes estádios de maturação (verdes, maturidade horticultural e completamente maduros), com injúrias mecânica, fisiológica, doenças fitopatológicas, ataque de pragas e ausência de danos. A cultivar Longa Vida é a mais comercializada na Ceasa (70%). O transporte é realizado em caminhões abertos (80%) e o armazenamento é em bancadas e/ou boxes (86%). Para a comercialização do tomate, são utilizadas embalagens plásticas (98%), sendo o manuseio incorreto o principal fator que dificulta a sua comercialização (32%). Na amostragem 'Qualidade Inicial', 68,99% das cultivares apresentaram-se maturidade horticultural (47 kg). 18,07% das injúrias mais frequentes tem-se a mecânica (12 kg) e 10,55% a danos fisiológicos (7 kg). Do total da amostragem “descarte”, cerca de 60, 58% (8 kg)dos frutos manifestavam-se maturidade horticulturale apresentaram 36,43% danos por injúria mecânica (48kg) e 21,90% danos por ataque de pragas (2,9 kg). As perdas pós-colheita podem ser reduzidas com a implementação e uso de câmaras refrigeradas.

Abstract: The Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission is the sixth Japanese X-ray astronomy satellite developed by a large international collaboration, including Japan, USA, Canada, and Europe. The mission aimed to provide the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E greater than 2 keV, using a microcalorimeter instrument, and to cover a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft X-rays to gamma-rays. After a successful launch on 2016 February 17, the spacecraft lost its function on 2016 March 26, but the commissioning phase for about a month provided valuable information on the on-board instruments and the spacecraft system, including astrophysical results obtained from first light observations. The paper describes the Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission, its capabilities, the initial operation, and the instruments/spacecraft performances confirmed during the commissioning operations for about a month.

Vespas endoparasitoides como C. flavipes são capazes de regular a fisiologia de seus hospedeiros por meio da secreção de proteínas bioativas sintetizadas por glândulas de veneno, vírus simbiontes, teratócitos e pela própria larva em desenvolvimento na hemocele do hospedeiro. O veneno dos parasitoides é injetado para auxiliar o estabelecimento do parasitoide no interior do hospedeiro nos primeiros dias após a oviposição. Teratócitos são células extraembrionárias que se dissociam da serosa após a eclosão do parasitoide e se dispersam na hemocele do hospedeiro durante o desenvolvimento do parasitoide. A atividade dos teratócitos influencia diretamente a fisiologia do hospedeiro por meio da secreção de peptídeos específicos. Muitos peptídeos do veneno e dos teratócitos de parasitoides foram identificados, mas muitos são não caracterizados e explorados. O objetivo deste estudo foi aplicar técnicas modernas de proteo-transcritômica para a identificação de proteínas produzidas durante o parasitismo de C. flavipes sobre D. saccharalis com destaque para proteínas produzidas pelos teratócitos e glândulas de veneno do parasitoide. Uma grande gama de proteínas e peptídeos expressos pelos teratócitos e glândula de veneno de C. flavipes foi identificada. Em seguida, alguns desses peptídeos foram selecionados e avaliados em termos imunossupressivos e inseticida sobre lagartas de D. saccharalis. Os resultados obtidos indicaram funções imunossupressoras e biotecnológicas úteis para auxiliar a compreensão da fisiologia do parasitismo bem como para o desenvolvimento de novas moléculas inseticidas. The sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is one of the most relevant pests in sugarcane fields and has been successfully managed in certain regions of Brazil with the use of the parasitoid Cotesia flavipes Cameron, 1891 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Endoparasitoids regulate the behavior and physiology of their hosts by secreting bioactive proteins synthesized by venom glands, symbiotic viruses, teratocytes or by the developing larva in the host's hemocoel. Venom is injected into the host to aid parasitoid successful establishment in the first days of parasitism. Teratocytes are extraembryonic cells present in the parasitoid egg that dissociate from the serosa after the parasitoid hatches and disperse in the host insect's hemocoel. Several venom- and teratocytes-derived peptides have been identified in different parasitoid wasps and many remain uncharacterized or unexplored. Investigations of the identity of host regulation-related molecules from C. flavipes may result in the identification of proteins with biotechnological potential. The purpose of this research was to apply modern proteotranscriptomic approaches for the identification host regulation-related proteins from C. flavipes, highlighting peptides from teratocytes and venom. A plenty of peptides produced by teratocytes and venom glands was identified. Following, some of these peptides were selected and evaluated in terms of immunosuppressive and insecticidal potentials against D. saccharalis larvae. Results point out biological and biotechnological potential of these peptides that shed light on the comprehension of the physiology of parasitism as well for the development of new insecticidal molecules. 001

Abstract: We examine four high-resolution reflection grating spectrometers (RGS) spectra of the February 2009 outburst of the luminous recurrent nova LMC 2009a. They were very complex and rich in intricate absorption and emission features. The continuum was consistent with a dominant component originating in the atmosphere of a shell burning white dwarf (WD) with peak effective temperature between 810¿000 K and a million K, and mass in the 1.2¿1.4 M¿ range. A moderate blue shift of the absorption features of a few hundred km s¿1 can be explained with a residual nova wind depleting the WD surface at a rate of about 10¿8 M¿ yr¿1. The emission spectrum seems to be due to both photoionization and shock ionization in the ejecta. The supersoft X-ray flux was irregularly variable on time-scales of hours, with decreasing amplitude of the variability. We find that both the period and the amplitude of another, already known 33.3-s modulation varied within time-scales of hours. We compared N LMC 2009a with other Magellanic Clouds novae, including four serendipitously discovered as supersoft X-ray sources (SSS) among 13 observed within 16 yr after the eruption. The new detected targets were much less luminous than expected: we suggest that they were partially obscured by the accretion disc. Lack of SSS detections in the Magellanic Clouds novae more than 5.5 yr after the eruption constrains the average duration of the nuclear burning phase.

Abstract: X-ray reverberation echoes are assumed to be produced in the strongly distorted spacetime around accreting supermassive black holes. This signal allows us to spatially map the geometry of the inner accretion flow1,2—a region that cannot yet be spatially resolved by any telescope—and provides a direct measure of the black hole mass and spin. The reverberation timescale is set by the light travel path between the direct emission from a hot X-ray corona and the reprocessed emission from the inner edge of the accretion disk3–6. However, there is an inherent degeneracy in the reverberation signal between black hole mass, inner disk radius and height of the illuminating corona above the disk. Here we use a long X-ray observation of the highly variable active galaxy IRAS 13224−3809 to track the reverberation signal as the system evolves on timescales of a day7,8. With the inclusion of all the relativistic effects, modelling reveals that the height of the X-ray corona increases with increasing luminosity, providing a dynamic view of the inner accretion region. This simultaneous modelling allows us to break the inherent degeneracies and obtain an independent timing-based estimate for the mass and spin of the black hole. The uncertainty on black hole mass is comparable to the leading optical reverberation method9, making X-ray reverberation a powerful technique, particularly for sources with low optical variability10.

Abstract: [Context] It is thought that ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are mainly powered by super-Eddington accreting neutron stars or black holes as shown by the recent discovery of X-ray pulsations and relativistic winds. [Aims] This work presents a follow-up study of the spectral evolution over two decades of the pulsing ULX NGC 1313 X-2 in order to understand the structure of the accretion disc. The primary objective is to determine the shape and nature of the dominant spectral components by investigating their variability with the changes in the source luminosity. [Methods[ We performed a spectral analysis over the canonical 0.3-10.0 keV energy band of all the high signal-to-noise XMM-Newton observations (96% of the available data), and we tested a number of different spectral models, which should approximate super-Eddington accretion discs. The baseline model consists of two thermal blackbody components with different temperatures plus an exponential cutoff powerlaw. [Results] The baseline model provides a good description of the X-ray spectra. In particular, the hotter and brighter (LXa., a., 6-9a ×a 1039 erg s-1) thermal component describes the emission from the super-Eddington inner disc and the cutoff powerlaw describes the contribution from the accretion column of the neutron star. Instead, the cooler component describes the emission from the outer region of the disc close to the spherisation radius and the wind. The luminosity-temperature relation for the cool component follows a negative trend, which is not consistent with La, T4, as is expected from a sub-Eddington thin disc of Shakura-Sunayev. This is not consistent with La, T2 either, as is expected for an advection-dominated disc. However, this would rather agree with a wind-dominated X-ray emitting region. Instead, the (Lx, Tdisk) relation for the hotter component is somewhere in between the first two theoretical scenarios. 129. Influence of abiotic factors on the resistance of plants to insects

Abstract: Plant resistance is considered as an important pillar of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), being a highly targeted method since is a less harmful method to the environment, if compared to other tactics such as chemical control. Abiotic factors are those related to the environment and have a direct influence on the dynamics of interaction between insects and plants. The abiotic factors such as altitude, temperature, humidity, luminosity, wind and soil fertility, among others, do not act alone, but in a complex net that leads insect population dynamics in agroecosystems. How the variations of these factors can be studied in the same context? First, it is important to consider how each abiotic factors act separately and then in a coexistence influence over the populations dynamics of insects and plants. In this study, the literature about the influence of abiotic factors on insect herbivory has been reviewed, focusing mainly on the mechanisms in which the plants use in the defense against insects., A resistência de plantas é considerada um importante pilar no contexto do Manejo Integrado de Pragas (MIP), sendo um método bastante visado por ser menos nocivo ao meio ambiente, quando comparado a outras táticas como o controle químico. Os fatores abióticos são aqueles relacionados ao ambiente e têm influência direta na dinâmica de interação entre insetos e plantas. Os fatores abióticos como altitude, temperatura, umidade, luminosidade, ventos e fertilidade do solo, por exemplo, não atuam sozinhos, mais sim em um complexo de fatores coexistentes que regem as dinâmicas populacionais nos diversos agroecosistemas. Como as variações destes fatores podem ser estudadas em um mesmo contexto? Primeiramente, é importante conhecer como cada uma atua individualmente para então contextualizar em uma situação de coexistência sobre as dinâmicas populacionais de insetos e plantas. Neste artigo, a literatura sobre a influência de fatores abióticos na herbivoria de insetos foi revisada, focando principalmente nos mecanismos em que as plantas utilizam na defesa contra insetos.

Abstract: International audience; We report on a Hitomi observation of IGR J16318−4848, a high-mass X-ray binary system with an extremely strong absorption of N_H ∼ 10^24 cm^−2. Previous X-ray studies revealed that its spectrum is dominated by strong fluorescence lines of Fe as well as continuum emission lines. For physical and geometrical insight into the nature of the reprocessing material, we utilized the high spectroscopic resolving power of the X-ray microcalorimeter (the soft X-ray spectrometer: SXS) and the wide-band sensitivity by the soft and hard X-ray imagers (SXI and HXI) aboard Hitomi. Even though the photon counts are limited due to unintended off-axis pointing, the SXS spectrum resolves Fe Kα_1 and Kα_2 lines and puts strong constraints on the line centroid and line width. The line width corresponds to a velocity of 160$$^{+300}_{-70}$$ km s^−1. This represents the most accurate, and smallest, width measurement of this line made so far from the any X-ray binary, much less than the Doppler broadening and Doppler shift expected from speeds that are characteristic of similar systems. Combined with the K-shell edge energy measured by the SXI and HXI spectra, the ionization state of Fe is estimated to be in the range of Fe i–iv. Considering the estimated ionization parameter and the distance between the X-ray source and the absorber, the density and thickness of the materials are estimated. The extraordinarily strong absorption and the absence of a Compton shoulder component have been confirmed. These characteristics suggest reprocessing materials that are distributed in a narrow solid angle or scattering, primarily by warm free electrons or neutral hydrogen. This measurement was achieved using the SXS detection of 19 photons. It provides strong motivation for follow-up observations of this and other X-ray binaries using the X-ray Astrophysics Recovery Mission and other comparable future instruments.

Abstract: We present the results from the Hitomi Soft Gamma-ray Detector (SGD) observation of the Crab nebula. The main part of SGD is a Compton camera, which in addition to being a spectrometer, is capable of measuring polarization of gamma-ray photons. The Crab nebula is one of the brightest X-ray / gamma-ray sources on the sky, and, the only source from which polarized X-ray photons have been detected. SGD observed the Crab nebula during the initial test observation phase of Hitomi. We performed the data analysis of the SGD observation, the SGD background estimation and the SGD Monte Carlo simulations, and, successfully detected polarized gamma-ray emission from the Crab nebula with only about 5 ks exposure time. The obtained polarization fraction of the phase-integrated Crab emission (sum of pulsar and nebula emissions) is (22.1% +/- 10.6%), and, the polarization angle is 110.degrees 7 + 13.degrees 2 /-13.degrees 0 in the energy range of 60-160 keV (The errors correspond to the 1 sigma deviation). The confidence level of the polarization detection was 99.3%. The polarization angle measured by SGD is about one sigma deviation with the projected spin axis of the pulsar, 124.degrees 0 +/- 0.degrees 1.

Abstract: We present results from the Hitomi X-ray observation of a young composite-type supernova remnant (SNR) G21.5-0.9, whose emission is dominated by the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) contribution. The X-ray spectra in the 0.8-80 keV range obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS), Soft X-ray Imager, and Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) show a significant break in the continuum as previously found with the NuSTAR observation. After taking into account all known emissions from the SNR other than the PWN itself, we find that the Hitomi spectra can be fitted with a broken power law with photon indices of Gamma(1) = 1.74 +/- 0.02 and Gamma(2) = 2.14 +/- 0.01 below and above the break at 7.1 +/- 0.3 keV, which is significantly lower than the NuSTAR result (similar to 9.0 keV). The spectral break cannot be reproduced by time-dependent particle injection one-zone spectral energy distribution models, which strongly indicates that a more complex emission model is needed, as suggested by recent theoretical models. We also search for narrow emission or absorption lines with the SXS, and perform a timing analysis of PSR J1833-1034 with the HXI and the Soft Gamma-ray Detector. No significant pulsation is found from the pulsar. However, unexpectedly, narrow absorption line features are detected in the SXS data at 4.2345 keV and 9.296 keV with a significance of 3.65 sigma. While the origin of these features is not understood, their mere detection opens up a new field of research and was only possible with the high resolution, sensitivity, and ability to measure extended sources provided by an X-ray microcalorimeter.

Abstract: We present Hitomi observations of N 132 D, a young, X-ray bright, O-rich core-collapse supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Despite a very short observation of only 3.7 ks, the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) easily detects the line complexes of highly ionized S K and Fe K with 16-17 counts in each. The Fe feature is measured for the first time at high spectral resolution. Based on the plausible assumption that the Fe K emission is dominated by He-like ions, we find that the material responsible for this Fe emission is highly redshifted at similar to 800 km s(-1) compared to the local LMC interstellar medium (ISM), with a 90% credible interval of 50-1500 km s(-1) if a weakly informative prior is placed on possible line broadening. This indicates (1) that the Fe emission arises from the supernova ejecta, and (2) that these ejecta are highly asymmetric, since no blueshifted component is found. The S K velocity is consistent with the local LMC ISM, and is likely from swept-up ISM material. These results are consistent with spatial mapping that shows the He-like Fe concentrated in the interior of the remnant and the S tracing the outer shell. The results also show that even with a very small number of counts, direct velocity measurements from Doppler-shifted lines detected in extended objects like supernova remnants are now possible. Thanks to the very low SXS background of similar to 1 event per spectral resolution element per 100 ks, such results are obtainable during short pointed or slew observations with similar instruments. This highlights the power of high-spectral-resolution imaging observations, and demonstrates the new window that has been opened with Hitomi and will be greatly widened with future missions such as the X-ray Astronomy Recovery Mission (XARM) and Athena.

Abstract: The Hitomi Soft X-ray Spectrometer spectrum of the Perseus cluster, with similar to 5 eV resolution in the 2-9 keV band, offers an unprecedented benchmark of the atomic modeling and database for hot collisional plasmas. It reveals both successes and challenges of the current atomic data and models. The latest versions of AtomDB/APEC (3.0.8), SPEX (3.03.00), and CHIANTI (8.0) all provide reasonable fits to the broad-band spectrum, and are in close agreement on best-fit temperature, emission measure, and abundances of a few elements such as Ni. For the Fe abundance, the APEC and SPEX measurements differ by 16%, which is 17 times higher than the statistical uncertainty. This is mostly attributed to the differences in adopted collisional excitation and dielectronic recombination rates of the strongest emission lines. We further investigate and compare the sensitivity of the derived physical parameters to the astrophysical source modeling and instrumental effects. The Hitomi results show that accurate atomic data and models are as important as the astrophysical modeling and instrumental calibration aspects. Substantial updates of atomic databases and targeted laboratory measurements are needed to get the current data and models ready for the data from the next Hitomi-level mission.

Abstract: Thanks to its high spectral resolution (similar to 5 eV at 6 keV), the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) on board Hitomi enables us to measure the detailed structure of spatially resolved emission lines from highly ionized ions in galaxy clusters for the first time. In this series of papers, using the SXS we have measured the velocities of gas motions, metallicities and the multi-temperature structure of the gas in the core of the Perseus Cluster. Here, we show that when inferring physical properties from line emissivities in systems like Perseus, the resonant scattering effect should be taken into account. In the Hitomi waveband, resonant scattering mostly affects the Fe XXV He alpha line (w)-the strongest line in the spectrum. The flux measured by Hitomi in this line is suppressed by a factor of similar to 1.3 in the inner similar to 30 kpc, compared to predictions for an optically thin plasma; the suppression decreases with the distance from the center. The w line also appears slightly broader than other lines from the same ion. The observed distortions of the w line flux, shape, and distance dependence are all consistent with the expected effect of the resonant scattering in the Perseus core. By measuring the ratio of fluxes in optically thick (w) and thin (Fe XXV forbidden, He beta, Ly alpha) lines, and comparing these ratios with predictions from Monte Carlo radiative transfer simulations, the velocities of gas motions have been obtained. The results are consistent with the direct measurements of gas velocities from line broadening described elsewhere in this series, although the systematic and statistical uncertainties remain significant. Further improvements in the predictions of line emissivities in plasma models, and deeper observations with future X-ray missions offering similar or better capabilities to the Hitomi SXS, will enable resonant scattering measurements to provide powerful constraints on the amplitude and anisotropy of cluster gas motions.

Abstract: To search for giant X-ray pulses correlated with the giant radio pulses (GRPs) from the Crab pulsar, we performed a simultaneous observation of the Crab pulsar with the X-ray satellite Hitomi in the 2-300 keV band and the Kashima NICT radio telescope in the 1.4-1.7 GHz band with a net exposure of about 2 ks on 2016 March 25, just before the loss of the Hitomi mission. The timing performance of the Hitomi instruments was confirmed to meet the timing requirement and about 1000 and 100 GRPs were simultaneously observed at the main pulse and inter-pulse phases, respectively, and we found no apparent correlation between the giant radio pulses and the X-ray emission in either the main pulse or inter-pulse phase. All variations are within the 2 sigma fluctuations of the X-ray fluxes at the pulse peaks, and the 3 sigma upper limits of variations of main pulse or inter-pulse GRPs are 22% or 80% of the peak flux in a 0.20 phase width, respectively, in the 2-300 keV band. The values for main pulse or inter-pulse GRPs become 25% or 110%, respectively, when the phase width is restricted to the 0.03 phase. Among the upper limits from the Hitomi satellite, those in the 4.5-10 keV and 70-300 keV bands are obtained for the first time, and those in other bands are consistent with previous reports. Numerically, the upper limits of the main pulse and inter-pulse GRPs in the 0.20 phase width are about (2.4 and 9.3) x 10(-11) erg cm(-2), respectively. No significant variability in pulse profiles implies that the GRPs originated from a local place within the magneto-sphere. Although the number of photon-emitting particles should temporarily increase to account for the brightening of the radio emission, the results do not statistically rule out variations correlated with the GRPs, because the possible X-ray enhancement may appear due to a > 0.02% brightening of the pulse-peak flux under such conditions.
