It was the late summer of 2003 when we first travelled to Sardinia to set up traps in the forest of Marganai, an area owned by the regional administration, in the south-western part of the island. Our Centro Nazionale per lo Studio e la Conservazione della Biodiversità Forestale in Verona—a research institute of the Italian State Forestry Service—had been entrusted with the assessment of arthropod diversity in permanent monitoring sites of the ICP Forests network, a European body for long-term research in forest ecosystems (Mason et al. 2006). The project included a total of twelve forests in Italy, and we were setting up a standard sampling design at each site.

The European bone-skippers (Diptera: Piophilidae: Thyreophorina), long considered extinct, have recently been the object of much interest by dipterists after their unexpected rediscovery. Considerable faunistic work has been done on these flies in recent years. However, some nomenclatural and taxonomic issues still require attention. A neotype is designated for Thyreophora anthropophaga Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (now in the genus Centrophlebomyia Hendel, 1903) to fix the identity of this nominal species. Centrophlebomyia anthropophaga is recognized as a valid species. It is described and illustrated in detail, and information on its preimaginal instars is provided for the first time. Four Palaearctic species of Centrophlebomyia are recognized and reviewed and a key is provided for their identification. Centrophlebomyia orientalis Hendel, 1907 from northern India, is removed from synonymy with C. anthropophaga and recognized as a valid species of Centrophlebomyia, stat. r. The nominal genus Protothyreophora Ozerov, 1984 is considered a junior synonym of Centrophlebomyia, syn. n.

New genus Neoethilla gen. n., is described to include two New World nominal species formerly recognized as valid species in Winthemia Robineau-Desvoidy: Exorista ignobilis van der Wulp and Winthemia antennalis Coquillett. Winthemia antennalis is proposed as a junior synonym of Exorista ignobilis syn. n. Neoethilla ignobilis comb. n. is removed from the Winthemiini and placed in the tribe Ethillini (Exoristinae) based on a study of the external features of adults, male terminalia, female reproductive system, and egg morphology. The small tribe Ethillini, not hitherto known from the New World, currently comprises fourteen genera worldwide. The phylogeny and systematics of the Ethillini and their relationships with related tribes are discussed and documented by descriptions and illustrations of relevant character states.

Thaumetopoea familyasinda yer alan turler (Lepidoptera, Notodontidae, Thaumetopoeinae), yaprak zararlisi bocekler olmalari ve alerji kaynagi olarak larva evresinde kasindirici killari olmasi nedeniyle ormancilik ve insan sagligi acisindan onemlidir. Bu familya icerisinde, ibreli agaclarla iliskili olan ve larvalari ilkbahar ve yaz aylarinda beslenen iki grup yer almaktadir, bu gruplar 'kislik' ve 'yazlik' cam kese bocekleri olarak adlandirilmaktadir. Bu calismada, Avrasya bolgesinde yayilan 'yazlik' Thaumetopoea turleri hakkinda bilgi toplanmistir. Bu bilgiler, Th. bonjeani, Th. cheela, Th. ispartaensis, Th. libanotica, Th. pinivora ve Th. sedirica turleri hakkinda morfolojik, biyolojik ve ekolojik ozellikleri icermektedir. Bu tebligde sunulan dolayli kanitlarin isiginda Thaumetopoea cheela turunun bu grupta yer aldigi one surulmektedir. Bilgiler literaturden elde edilerek mumkun oldugunca muze ve toplanan orneklerle kontrol edilmistir. Morfolojik ve biyolojik ozelliklere dayali bir tanimlama anahtari onerilmistir. One of the major problems hindering the systematic study of tachinid flies is that genera are often poorly defined, making it difficult to unambiguously assign species among closely related genera. Within the tribe Winthemiini, an example of this problem is represented by the unstable classification of the Afrotropical species most recently classified as Smidtia capensis (Schiner). This species has been previously assigned to four different genera on the basis of limited examination and evidence. Here, we evaluate the identity and phylogenetic affinities of this species and other members of the tribe Winthemiini using morphological and molecular phylogenetic analysis. We demonstrate that S. capensis actually belongs to the genus Winthemia Robineau-Desvoidy. We also find that Winthemia is paraphyletic with respect to two monotypic genera, Crypsina (type species Crypsina prima Brauer & Bergenstamm) and Hemiwinthemia (type species Hemiwinthemia calva Villeneuve). On the basis of morphological and genetic evidence, we propose to extend the generic limits of Winthemia to include W. londti, sp. nov. (South Africa), W. capensis (Schiner), comb. nov. (South Africa), W. prima (Brauer & Bergenstamm), comb. nov. (China, Japan, Australia) and W. calva (Villeneuve), comb. nov. (D.R. Congo), thus synonymising with Winthemia the generic names Crypsina, syn. nov. and Hemiwinthemia, syn. nov.

108. Phylogenetics and taxonomy of Ventrops — the largest genus of Afrotropical Rhinophoridae (Diptera)

Three new species of the Afrotropical genus Ventrops Crosskey, 1977 (V. aethiopicus, sp. nov., V. freidbergi, sp. nov. and V. stuckenbergi, sp. nov.) are described, and all seven known species are included in a morphology-based phylogenetic analysis both to provide a rigorous argumentation for the generic affiliation of the newly described species, and to provide a first explicit hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships between the included species. Also, by including exemplar species from several genera of the Rhinophoridae as outgroups, this analysis is the first explicitly phylogenetic definition of the genus Ventrops within a broader systematic context. The seven species of Ventrops are arranged in three species groups (milichioides-group, hannemariae-group and aethiopicus-group).

The Rhinophoridae (Diptera) have a cosmopolitan distribution and a known fauna of about 150 species (Cerretti & Pape 2007). So far as known, all species are parasitoids of terrestrial woodlice (sow bugs) of the order Isopoda (Oniscoidea) (Pape 2010). Female rhinophorids lay eggs in the vicinity of potential hosts and the planidial first instars parasitize sow bugs as they pass by (Pape 1998).

The genus Kuwanimyia Townsend, before known only from one East Asian species (K. conspersa Townsend) is reviewed. Three new Afrotropical species, K. afra sp. nov., K. atra sp. nov. and K. capensis sp. nov. [the last one a parasitoid of Cossus tenebroides (Lepidoptera, Cossidae)] are described and illustrated. The generic limits of Kuwanimyia are reappraised to exclude Dolichocolon Brauer & Bergenstamm and Prosopodopsis Townsend. A key to the known species of Kuwanimyia is provided.

Nardia tsavo sp. n. from Kenya is described and compared with the congeneric Nardia rufolateralis (Crosskey, 1984 ) comb. n. A discussion on phylogenetic and zoogeographical relationships between these genera is given.

The Afrotropical endemic pollen beetle genera Tarchonanthogethes Audisio & Cline and Xenostrongylogethes Audisio & Cline, of the Anthystrix genus-complex, are revised. Eleven new species of Tarchonanthogethes (T. autumnalis, sp. nov., T. bisignatus, sp. nov., T. fasciatus, sp. nov., T. gratiellae, sp. nov., T. hermani, sp. nov., T. hystrix, sp. nov., T. lilliputianus, sp. nov., T. maasai, sp. nov., T. manconiae, sp. nov., T. pectinipes, sp. nov., T. thalycriformis, sp. nov.) and one new Xenostrongylogethes (X. cychramoides, sp. nov.) are described, illustrated and compared with related taxa. Tarchonanthogethes hirtus Kirejtshuk & Easton, 1988 is synonymized with T. martini (syn. nov.). Meligethes assutus Easton, 1960 from Kenya is transferred from Afrogethes Audisio & Cline to Tarchonanthogethes (comb. nov.). Meligethes singularis Grouvelle, 1919 from southern Africa is transferred from Tarchonanthogethes to Meligethinus Grouvelle, 1906 (comb. nov.). Larval host-plants for Tarchonanthogethes and Xenostrongylogethes include dioecious bushes and trees of Tarchonantheae Asteraceae (genera Brachylaena R.Br. and Tarchonanthus L.). All species currently attributed to the genera Anthystrix Kirejtshuk, Sebastiangethes Audisio, Kirk-Spriggs & Cline, Tarchonanthogethes and Xenostrongylogethes (Anthystrix genus-complex) are included in a morphology-based cladistic analysis to provide a rigorous hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships. An identification key to all 25 known species in the Anthystrix genus-complex, including all available data on insect host plant relationships, is presented.

The new species Loewia papei sp. nov. from southern Anatolia (Turkey) is described, illustrated and compared with congeners. A brief diagnosis of Loewia Egger is provided and the systematics of the genus are discussed. Loewia nudigena Mesnil, 1972 is fixed as the type species of Fortisia Rondani, 1861 (junior synonym of Loewia). A full list of previously known valid species of Loewia is provided along with information on primary types, type repositories (where known), and type localities. A lectotype is designated for Thrychogena brevifrons Rondani, 1856 (= Loewia brevifrons (Rondani, 1856)).

The Diptera genus-group names of Camillo Rondani are reviewed and annotated. A total of 601 nomenclaturally available genus-group names in 82 families of Diptera are listed alphabetically. For each name the following are given: author, year and page of original publication, originally included species [and first included species if none were originally included], type species and method of fixation, current status of the name, family placement, and a list of any emendations of it that have been found in the literature. Remarks are given to clarify nomenclatural or taxonomic information. In addition, an index is provided to all the species-group names of Diptera proposed by Rondani (1,236, of which 1,183 are available) with bibliographic reference to each original citation. Appended to this study is a full bibliography of Rondani’s works and a list with explanations for all new synonymies arising from revised emendations. The pollen beetle Restiopria biondii gen. nov., sp. nov., from Western Cape, South Africa, is described. The taxonomic position of Restiopria is discussed. The new genus is not noticeably related to any other known Meligethine, although it exhibits a few shared characters with Pria Stephens 1830. Larval host plants of the single known species are male flowers of two species of the monocot family Restionaceae.

A taxonomic revision of the West Palaearctic species of the genus Pales Robineau-Desvoidy is presented and the identity of the genus is defined and discussed. Pales abdita sp. nov. from some localities in the Mediterranean region and Pales marae sp. nov. from Sardinia are described, illustrated and compared with similar species. A key to the ten known West Palaearctic species of Pales is presented. The rare genus Schembria Rondani is suggested as the possible sister-group of Pales and the male genitalia of the only known species, S. meridionalis Rondani, are figured for the first time.

In this paper a blondeliine tachinid, Eomedina hamoyensis sp. nov., from Namibia is described, illustrated and compared with the only known congeneric species E. apicalis (Curran). The Afrotropical genus Eomedina has a blunt, scoop-like and well sclerotized ovipositor, and based on this derived structure appears to belong to the “Medina genus-group”. The new species is known only from several females and they differ from females of E. apicalis in lacking a pair of proclinate orbital setae and in having just one pair of reclinate upper orbital setae.

Saproxylic beetles from coarse deadwood debris found on the forest floor were documented for the first time at four permanent monitoring plots in central Italy that are part of the International Co-operative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP Forests). The plots consisted of unmanaged vegetation communities representing typical beech forest, mixed broadleaf and conifer forest, Turkey oak forest, and cork oak forest respectively. With the present study, we identified beetle assemblages to species level and investigated whether the type of vegetation affects beetle communities. In order to detect more of the species present and perform a better comparison among study sites, samples were collected with two types of traps: flight interception traps hanging from tree branches (n = 1 per plot) and emergence traps mounted on deadwood like fallen branches or trunks (n = up to 8 per plot, depending on the availability of deadwood pieces). A total of 1372 individual beetles, belonging to 133 species of 36 families were captured, identified and enumerated. Considering all beetles caught in both trap types, alpha-diversity values indicated high beetle diversity at all of the four forest sites, while measured species richness, accumulation curves and species richness estimators agreed that the highest species density was at Rosello. Monte Rufeno had the highest abundance of beetle individuals. Monte Rufeno and Monte Circeo had the highest numbers of saproxylic species, even though Rosello had the highest total number of beetle species. Ninety species (67.7% of the species found in all plots combined) were caught in only one plot, while only three species, representing 2.3% of the total of species, were collected at all of the four plots; nine saproxylic species were collected exclusively at Monte Circeo, among them rare singletons like Agrilus convexicollis mancini Obenberger (Buprestidae) and Nematodes filum (F.) (Melasidae), the latter recorded in central Italy for the first time. Environmental variables having the strongest correlations with the assemblage composition were plot-scale variables (slope, stand age, amount of deadwood). The only trap-scale variable that showed up as related to assemblage composition was wood decayclass. The study highlighted that the diversity in saproxylic beetle communities reflects the different tree communities at the four study plots. The research also showed that even at the small and very small scale of forest plots, traits of beetle assemblages can be revealed on coarse deadwood debris.

The systematic position and generic limits of Rossimyiops Mesnil, 1953 (type species: R. whiteheadi Mesnil, 1953) are critically redefined. Examination of the male terminalia allowed us to demonstrate the unjustified placement of Rossimyiops within the subfamily Dexiinae, tribe Dufouriini and its probable affiliation with the subfamily Tachininae, tribe Minthoini. The following generic names are synonymised with Rossimyiops Mesnil, 1953: Mesnilomyia Kugler, 1972 (type species: M. magnifica Kugler, 1972) syn. nov., and Persedea Richter, 2001 (type species: P. exquisita Richter, 2001) syn. nov. The following new combinations are proposed: Rossimyiops achilleae (Kugler, 1972) comb. nov., R. exquisitus (Richter, 2001) comb. nov., R. longicornis (Kugler, 1972) comb. nov., R. magnificus (Kugler, 1972) comb. nov., and R. subapertus (Herting, 1983) comb. nov. Mesnilomyia rufipes Zeegers, 2007 is established as a synonym of Persedea exquisita Richter, 2001, syn. nov. Rossimyiops austrinus Cerretti sp. nov. from Namibia and Rossimyiops djerbaensis Cerretti sp. nov. from Tunisia are described, illustrated and compared with the other known species of the genus. Male terminalia and female external morphology of R. subapertus and R. whiteheadi are described for the first time. Finally, Mesnilomyia calyptrata Zeegers, 2007 is removed from this genus and placed as Tachinidae incertae sedis.
