Abstract: A search for the associated production of the Higgs boson with a top quark pair (t¯tH) is reported. The search is performed in multilepton final states using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy √s=13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. Higgs boson decays to WW∗, ττ, and ZZ∗ are targeted. Seven final states, categorized by the number and flavor of charged-lepton candidates, are examined for the presence of the Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV and a pair of top quarks. An excess of events over the expected background from Standard Model processes is found with an observed significance of 4.1 standard deviations, compared to an expectation of 2.8 standard deviations. The best fit for the t¯tH production cross section is σ(t¯tH)=790+230−210 fb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 507+35−50 fb. The combination of this result with other t¯tH searches from the ATLAS experiment using the Higgs boson decay modes to b¯b, γγ and ZZ∗→4ℓ, has an observed significance of 4.2 standard deviations, compared to an expectation of 3.8 standard deviations. Abstract: A direct search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair of charm quarks is presented. Associated production of the Higgs and Z bosons, in the decay mode ZH→ℓ+ℓ−c¯c is studied. A data set with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 of pp collisions at √s=13TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is used. The H→c¯c signature is identified using charm-tagging algorithms. The observed (expected) upper limit on σ(pp→ZH)×B(H→c¯c) is 2.7 (3.9+2.1−1.1) pb at the 95% confidence level for a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, while the standard model value is 26 fb., We thank CERN for the very successful operation of the LHC, as well as the support staff from our institutions without whom ATLAS could not be operated efficiently. Abstract: We employ radio-frequency spectroscopy to investigate a polarized spin mixture of ultracold 6 Li atoms close to a broad Feshbach scattering resonance. Focusing on the regime of strong repulsive interactions, we observe well-defined coherent quasiparticles even for unitarity-limited interactions. We characterize the many-body system by extracting the key properties of repulsive Fermi polarons: the energy E + , the effective mass m * , the residue Z , and the decay rate G . Above a critical interaction, E + is found to exceed the Fermi energy of the bath, while m * diverges and even turns negative, thereby indicating that the repulsive Fermi liquid state becomes energetically and thermodynamically unstable., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (author's final draft)

Abstract: When a vortex refracts surface waves, the momentum flux carried by the waves changes direction and the waves induce a reaction force on the vortex. We study experimentally the resulting vortex distortion. Incoming surface gravity waves impinge on a steady vortex of velocity $U_0$ driven magneto-hydrodynamically at the bottom of a fluid layer. The waves induce a shift of the vortex center in the direction transverse to wave propagation, together with a decrease in surface vorticity. We interpret these two phenomena in the framework introduced by Craik and Leibovich (1976): we identify the dimensionless Stokes drift $S=U_s/U_0$ as the relevant control parameter, $U_s$ being the Stokes drift velocity of the waves. We propose a simple vortex line model which indicates that the shift of the vortex center originates from a balance between vorticity advection by the Stokes drift and self-advection of the vortex. The decrease in surface vorticity is interpreted as a consequence of vorticity expulsion by the fast Stokes drift, which confines it at depth. This purely hydrodynamic process is analogous to the magnetohydrodynamic expulsion of magnetic field by a rapidly moving conductor through the electromagnetic skin effect. We study vorticity expulsion in the limit of fast Stokes drift and deduce that the surface vorticity decreases as $1/S$, a prediction which is compatible with the experimental data. Such wave-induced vortex distortions have important consequences for the nonlinear regime of wave refraction: the refraction angle rapidly decreases with wave intensity., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus and Ae. aegypti) are global nuisances and are competent vectors for viruses such as Chikungunya (CHIKV), Dengue (DV), and Zika (ZIKV). This review aims to analyze available spatiotemporal distribution models of Aedes mosquitoes and their influential factors. A combination of five sets of 3–5 keywords were used to retrieve all relevant published models. Five electronic search databases were used: PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, and Google Scholar through 17 May 2017. We generated a hierarchical decision tree for article selection. We identified 21 relevant published studies that highlight different combinations of methodologies, models and influential factors. Only a few studies adopted a comprehensive approach highlighting the interaction between environmental, socioeconomic, meteorological and topographic systems. The selected articles showed inconsistent findings in terms of number and type of influential factors affecting the distribution of Aedes vectors, which is most likely attributed to: (i) limited availability of high-resolution data for physical variables, (ii) variation in sampling methods; Aedes feeding and oviposition behavior; (iii) data collinearity and statistical distribution of observed data. This review highlights the need and sets the stage for a rigorous multi-system modeling approach to improve our knowledge about Aedes presence/abundance within their flight range in response to the interaction between environmental, socioeconomic, and meteorological systems.

Abstract: In this paper we present a unifying geometric and compositional framework for modeling complex physical network dynamics as port-Hamiltonian systems on open graphs. Basic idea is to associate with the incidence matrix of the graph a Dirac structure relating the flow and effort variables associated to the edges, internal vertices, as well as boundary vertices of the graph, and to formulate energy-storing or energy-dissipating relations between the flow and effort variables of the edges and internal vertices. This allows for state variables associated to the edges, and formalizes the interconnection of networks. Examples from different origins such as consensus algorithms are shown to share the same structure. Abstract: A recent theoretical breakthrough has brought a new tool, called \emph{localization landscape}, to predict the localization regions of vibration modes in complex or disordered systems. Here, we report on the first experiment which measures the localization landscape and demonstrates its predictive power. Holographic measurement of the static deformation under uniform load of a thin plate with complex geometry provides direct access to the landscape function. When put in vibration, this system shows modes precisely confined within the sub-regions delineated by the landscape function. Also the maxima of this function match the measured eigenfrequencies, while the minima of the valley network gives the frequencies at which modes become extended. This approach fully characterizes the low frequency spectrum of a complex structure from a single static measurement. It paves the way to the control and engineering of eigenmodes in any vibratory system, especially where a structural or microscopic description is not accessible., 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: We study a physical system consisting of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined to a ring shaped lattice potential interrupted by three weak links. The system is assumed to be driven by an effective flux piercing the ring lattice. By employing path integral techniques, we explore the effective quantum dynamics of the system in a pure quantum phase dynamics regime. Moreover, the effects of the density's quantum fluctuations are studied through exact diagonalization analysis of the spectroscopy of the Bose-Hubbard model. Abstract: We study the propagation of a hole in degenerate (paramagnetic) spin environments. This canonical problem has important connections to a number of physical systems, and is perfectly suited for experimental realization with ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. At the short-to-intermediate time scale that we can access using a stochastic-series-type numeric scheme, the propagation turns out to be distinctly nondiffusive with the probability distribution featuring minima in both space and time due to quantum interference, yet the motion is not ballistic, except at the beginning. Abstract: Estimation of physical parameters in dynamical systems driven by linear partial differential equations is an important problem. In this paper, we introduce the least costly experiment design framework for these systems. It enables parameter estimation with an accuracy that is specified by the experimenter prior to the identification experiment, while at the same time minimising the cost of the experiment. We show how to adapt the classical framework for these systems and take into account scaling and stability issues. We also introduce a progressive subdivision algorithm that further generalises the experiment design framework in the sense that it returns the lowest cost by finding the optimal input signal, and optimal sensor and actuator locations. Our methodology is then applied to a relevant problem in heat transfer studies: estimation of conductivity and diffusivity parameters in front-face experiments. We find good correspondence between numerical and theoretical results.

Abstract: Arresting of segmental mobility in polymer systems on cooling from the melt was simulated by means of the Bond Fluctuation Model. In order to represent the behaviour of the system, three potentials were included: a Lennard-Jones potential, a bond length potential and a bond angle potential. The effect of the bond angle and bond length potential combination is to stretch the chains, while the Lennard-Jones potential leads to a lack of free volume which appears when temperature decreases. So, when a cooling ramp is applied, depending on the balance of these potentials, the system shows a transition in which molecules densely pack or, on the contrary, remains amorphous. Therefore, the choice in the weighting of these three potentials is a key point to simulate a physical system by using the Bond Fluctuation Model. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: In this paper we revise the main features of pseudospin and spin symmetries of the Dirac equation with scalar and vector potentials and mention several of its applications to physical systems. These symmetries have been extensively researched in the last 15 years, especially pseudospin symmetry, mainly in its application in understanding certain nuclear structure features of heavy nuclei. The realization of both symmetries has also been studied using several mean-field scalar and vector potentials. For many classes of potentials, these symmetries allow to have analytical solutions of the Dirac equation which otherwise would not have been possible. We report here some recent results related to anti-fermions, Coulomb and confining potentials.

Abstract: Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) have the promise of presenting the next evolution in computing with potential applications that include aerospace, transportation, and various automation systems. These applications motivate advances in the different sub-fields of CPS such as mobile computing, context awareness, and computer vision. However, deploying and testing complete CPSs is known to be a complex and expensive task. In this paper, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of Up and Away (UnA): a testbed for Cyber-Physical Systems that use Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as their main physical component. UnA aims to abstract the control of physical system components to reduce the complexity of UAV oriented CPS experiments. UnA provides APIs to allow for converting CPS algorithm implementations, developed typically for simulations, into physical experiments using a few simple steps. The technique uses step integration over a small interval of the independent variable after applying the finite difference for the partial derivatives. The integration is carried out for each element while using average values for the neighboring elements. These values are modified by iteration. The technique is used here for solving Burgers' equation. The results demonstrate excellent agreement with that of the exact solution.

Preparing states of arbitrary size in different classes is important for performing a wide range of quantum protocols. W states, in particular, constitute a class with a variety of quantum networking protocols. However, all known schemes for preparing polarization encoded photonic W states are probabilistic, with resource requirements increasing at least sub-exponentially. We propose a deterministic scheme for preparing W states of size of any power of 2, which requires no prior entanglement and can be performed locally. We introduce an all-optical setup that can efficiently double the size of W states of arbitrary size. Our scheme advances the use of W states in real-world quantum networks and could be extended to other physical systems. Publisher's Version

Next, it is shown that all these systems share the same basic properties, which allows the use of analogon models. A more abstract domain-independent description helps to better understand the dynamic behaviour and allows for modifications of the system in the domain that is most easily accessible. The last chapters deal with the role of feedback in dynamical systems. Examples are shown by applying these concepts to electronic simulation models with operational amplifiers. Feedback control systems are briefly introduced as a means to change the dynamical properties of a system. Abstract: Invariance properties of physical systems govern their behaviour: energy conservation in turbulence drives a wide distribution of energy among modes, as observed in geophysical or astrophysical flows. In ideal hydrodynamics, the role of the invariance of helicity (correlation between velocity and its curl, measuring departures from mirror symmetry) remains unclear since it does not alter the energy spectrum. However, in the presence of rotation, significant differences emerge between helical and non-helical turbulent flows. We first briefly outline some of the issues such as the partition of energy and helicity among modes. Using massive numerical simulations, we then show that smallscale structures and their intermittency properties differ according to whether helicity is present or not, in particular with respect to the emergence of Beltrami core vortices that are laminar helical vertical updraft vortices. These results point to the discovery of a small parameter besides the Rossby number, a fact that would relate the problem of rotating helical turbulence to that of critical phenomena, through the renormalization group and weak-turbulence theory. This parameter can be associated with the adimensionalized ratio of the energy to helicity flux to small scales, the three-dimensional energy cascade being weak and self-similar. copy; 2010 The Royal Society. Abstract: Passivity in physical systems is a restatement of energy balancing, therefore is an ubiquitous property in engineering applications. Under some weak conditions, the unique equilibrium state of a passive system is stable. However, to ensure asymptotic stability, strict passivity and a detectability property are required. Although strict passivity may be enforced via a damping injection that feeds back the passive output, this signal may be noisy or unmeasurable - the paradigmatic example being velocity in mechanical systems. In this paper a sampled integral-approximation stabilization (SIAS) technique for asymptotic regulation of passive systems, that requires only the knowledge of the time integral of the passive output - i.e. position in mechanical systems - is proposed. As a generalization of the previous result, it is shown that SIAS is applicable to cascade connections of passive systems measuring only the storage function of the first subsystem and the output of the second one. Several examples, including a planar elbow manipulator and the controlled rigid body dynamics are shown to satisfy the required assumptions for the application of the SIAS.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to explore the ways in which students, aged 11–14 years, account for certain changes in physical systems and the extent to which they draw on an energy model as a common framework for explaining changes observed in diverse systems. Data were combined from two sources: interviews with 20 individuals and an open-ended questionnaire that was administered to 240 students (121 upper elementary school students and 119 middle school students). We observed a wealth of approaches ranging from accounts of energy transfer and transformation to responses identifying specific objects or processes as the cause of changes. The findings also provide evidence that students do not seem to appreciate the transphenomenological and unifying nature of energy. Students' thinking was influenced by various conceptual difficulties that are compounded by traditional science teaching; for instance, students tended to confuse energy with force or electric current. In addition, the comparison between the responses from middle school students and those of elementary school students demonstrates that science teaching and maturation appeared to have a negligible influence on whether students had constructed a coherent energy model, which they could use consistently to account for changes in certain physical systems. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract: Coal is the second most important fuel currently used by mankind, accounting for over 25% of the world’s primary energy supply. It provides 41% of global electricity supplies and is a vital fuel or production input for the steel, cement and chemical industries. However, coal is a fossil fuel formed from organic material by geological processes over millions of years. Hence, coal is a finite resource in terms of human time scales and its continued availability is important to the world economy. Peat is a related substance, but is classified somewhere between a fossil fuel and biomass. The energy sector uses peat as a fuel to generate electricity and heat. It also has applications in industrial, residential and other sectors but global consumption of peat is insignificant in comparison to coal. Peat shares many similarities with coal and is increasingly often grouped with coal for resource estimates in reports and assessments by public agencies. Knowing how coal and peat are created is vital to understanding how deposits are formed and what their basic properties are. Geology provides models and methodologies for describing deposits and where to find them. Exploration, drilling and surveys provide the data necessary to map deposits and assess the resources they contain. Classification schemes are also central to understanding how the terms relate to the underlying data. Future production of coal and peat is essential for the development of global energy supplies. It is only the produced volumes that can be used in human activities and a detailed appreciation of the production process is essential in understanding future supply developments. Factors such as economy, technology, legal and environmental constraints affect the recoverable share of the available resources, i.e. the reserves. Understanding the complexity and the greater whole of the production mechanism and the limitations that are imposed on it require a wide variety of approaches and conceptual infrastruc, The book will be published in 2011/2012, but the chapter is already accepted

Abstract: Arresting of segmental mobility in polymer systems on cooling from the melt was simulated by means of the Bond Fluctuation Model. In order to represent the behaviour of the system, three potentials were included: a Lennard-Jones potential, a bond length potential and a bond angle potential. The effect of the bond angle and bond length potential combination is to stretch the chains, while the Lennard-Jones potential leads to a lack of free volume which appears when temperature decreases. So, when a cooling ramp is applied, depending on the balance of these potentials, the system shows a transition in which molecules densely pack or, on the contrary, remains amorphous. Therefore, the choice in the weighting of these three potentials is a key point to simulate a physical system by using the Bond Fluctuation Model. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: This paper is concerned with obtaining physical-based low-order approximations of linear physical systems. Low-order models possess some advantages, including the reduction of computational difficulty and understanding of the physics of the original system in a simpler manner. Previously, a number of methods have been suggested to develop suitable low-order approximations. However, most of these approaches do not reflect the relation between the mathematical model and the physical subsystems. Specifically, these techniques do not indicate which of the physical subsystems should be retained or eliminated in the reduced-order model. The proposed model reduction method is based on identifying subsystem types of a physical system using the bond graph method. These subsystems are then removed or retained based on the information from the physical system decomposition procedures and partial fraction expansion residues to obtain a reduced-order model. The physical model reduction procedure is verified on physical linear systems.

Abstract: Dynamic models of physical systems with physically meaningful states and parameters have become increasingly important, for design, control and even procurement decisions. The successful use of models in these contexts requires that the models be of sufficient quality. However, while algorithms have been developed to help formulate and integrate physical system models, as well as to generate minimum complexity physical system models, algorithms to assess the "quality" of dynamic system models have not been produced. This is true even if the attributes of model are limited to accuracy and validity. The objective of this paper is to introduce a new methodology that systematically quantifies the accuracy of a predicted system response and determines the validity of the physical system model used to predict the system response. The accuracy and validity of the model are evaluated using statistical properties of measured system response. The new algorithm is called Accuracy & Validation Algorithm for Simulation (AVASIM), and is a time-domain perspective comparing the model's time trajectories at user-defined points of interest as well as over the entire simulation horizon. To illustrate AVASIM, the quality of a handling model of a DaimlerChrysler Grand Cherokee is compared to the measurements obtained from that vehicle subjected to known steering inputs. Results demonstrate that the accuracy and validity of the Grand Cherokee model can be systematically assessed using the proposed methodology, and, thus, AVASIM appears to be a powerful tool for assessing the quality of system models. Abstract: Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes ( Aedes albopictus and Ae. aegypti ) are global nuisances and are competent vectors for viruses such as Chikungunya (CHIKV), Dengue (DV), and Zika (ZIKV). This review aims to analyze available spatiotemporal distribution models of Aedes mosquitoes and their influential factors. A combination of five sets of 3-5 keywords were used to retrieve all relevant published models. Five electronic search databases were used: PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, and Google Scholar through 17 May 2017. We generated a hierarchical decision tree for article selection. We identified 21 relevant published studies that highlight different combinations of methodologies, models and influential factors. Only a few studies adopted a comprehensive approach highlighting the interaction between environmental, socioeconomic, meteorological and topographic systems. The selected articles showed inconsistent findings in terms of number and type of influential factors affecting the distribution of Aedes vectors, which is most likely attributed to: (i) limited availability of high-resolution data for physical variables, (ii) variation in sampling methods; Aedes feeding and oviposition behavior; (iii) data collinearity and statistical distribution of observed data. This review highlights the need and sets the stage for a rigorous multi-system modeling approach to improve our knowledge about Aedes presence/abundance within their flight range in response to the interaction between environmental, socioeconomic, and meteorological systems., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Abstract: ÖZET DENGEDE VE DENGEDEN UZAK SİSTEMLERDE FAZ GEÇİŞLERİ Fiziksel sistemlerin mikroskopik özellikleri inceleyen istatistik mekaniğin yüzyılımızda aldığı mesafe gerçekten dikkate değerdir. Bilindiği gibi bir sis temin makroskopik nicelikleri (gözlenebilirleri) ile o sistemin mikroskopik ser bestlik dereceleri üzerinden alman istatistiksel averajları arasında ilişki kur mak mümkündür. Sistem büyüklüğü arttıkça bu istatistiksel averajlardaki dalgalanma miktarı azalır. Bu azalma sistemin büyük ölçeklerde determinis- tik olarak tanımlanmasını sağlar. Doğadaki pek çok sistem sıcaklık, manyetik alan, v.s. gibi dış etkenler den dolayı kritik bir değerde beklenmedik ani davranışlar göstermektedir. Bu olay faz geçişi veya hal değişimi olarak adlandınlmaktadır. Faz geçişi olan sistemlerde, sistem parametrelerinin averajlanndaki dalgalanmaların sistemin anlaşılmasında oynadığı rol ve beraberinde getirdiği sonuçlar bakımından ger çekten ilginçtir. Her tohum sayısı için farklı zaman aralıklarında on farklı yüzey konfigurasyonu alınarak toplam elli tane farklı yüzey konfigurasyonu elde edildi. pa = sn s, seçilen herhangi bir köşenin s büyüklüğünde bir kümeye ait olma olasılığı ise, na = Na/Ld, s büyüklüğünde bir kümenin her köşesinin ortalama olarak o kümeye ait olma olasılığı ve Ns, s büyüklüğündeki kümelerin sayısı olması kabulü altında, na ~ a ve r = 2.06 ± 0.1 ile ifade edilen küme dağılımı bulundu. Bu sonuç bize reak tanlann oluşturduğu kümelerin self-similiar dağılım ihtiva etmekte olduğunu söylemektedir. Kümelerin fractal boyutu D, L = 512, 1024 için box-counting method kullanılarak D = 1.92 ± 0.06 olarak bulundu. Ayrıca `finite-size scaling` analiz metodu kullanılarak hesaplanan fractal boyut ise D = 1.94 ± 0.04'tür. Yani, bu kümeler fractaldır. Bütün hata paylan, minimum karelere ayırma yöntemi kullanılarak hesaplandı (bak. Appendix.A). Bu olasılıklar doldurulacak latis köşesinin bütün komşuları boş ise geçerlidir. Diğer durum larda ise, her boş latis köşesi için, reaktanlann yüzeye yapışma olasılıkları en yakın komşu köşelerin konfigurasyonunun bir fonksiyonu, diğer bir deyişle yerel olarak tanım! anmaktadır (xlXc,xlğc). Her latis köşesi için tanımlanan yerel olasılıklar katalizasyon süresince sürekli değişmektedir. Reaksiyon ve difüzyon işlemi yukarıda açıklandığı gı gibidir. Bu model için MCS analizi, x^'mn bütün değerleri için zehirlenmenin olmadığım ve yüzeydeki toplam reaktan yoğunluğunun (pa + Pb) hiçbir zaman 0.42'nin üzerine çıkmadığı sonucunu vermektedir. Hard-Spin Mean-Field Yaklaşımı ile Seyreltilmiş Üçgen An- tiferromagnetik Ising Modelinde Faz Geçişlerinin İncelenmesi Bu çalışmada tamamıyla frustrated olan antiferromagnetik üçgen Ising modelinden başlayarak, spinlerin farklı oranlarda seyreltilmesiyle sistemin dav ranışının nasıl etkileneceğini, diğer bir deyişle, frustration'm ortadan kalkıp kalkmayacağım incelemek olacaktır. Bunun için yakın tarihte geliştirilmiş olan hard-spin mean-field yaklaşımı kullanılacaktır (Netz, Berker, 1991). Bu teoriye göre, her spin yerel bir mıknatıslanmaya sahiptir ve komşulan- mn sahip olduğu tüm spin değerlerini, s, = ±1, göz önüne alan efektif bir etki (alan) hisseder. Bu seyreltme işleminden sonra yukardaki denklemden her spinin mıknatıslanması ayn ayrı iteratif olarak (closed-form) hesaplanmaktadır. Her iterasyon adımında, her altörgü sıra ile, yani, birinin sahip olduğu bütün spin- lerinin mıknatıslanması hesaplandıktan sonra diğer altörgünün spinleri için aynı işlem yapılmaktadır. Sadece bir altörgününün spinlerinin seyreltildiği durumda, farklı seyrelt me miktarları için sistemdeki frustration miktarı azalmaktadır. The first is the surface catalysis with irreversible monomer-monomer adsorption, reaction and diffusion. The second is the diluted triangular antifer- romagnetic Ising system. These are examples of non-equilibrium and equlib- rium systems, respectively. For the catalysis, the main aims are the investiga tion of how diffusion effects the segregation and aggregation of different species on the surface, namely pattern formation, the geometry of the clusters, and modifications which may lead to a reactive steady state, in some range of the system parameters. The antiferromagnetictriangular Ising model is the simplest fully frus trated system with Tc - 0. It is of interest to investigate the effect of dilution on the phase diagram, since it is expected that this will remove some of the frustration, giving rise to order at finite temperatures. The recently developed hard-spin mean-field theory approach (Netz and Berker, 1991) will be applied to this system. IV 53

Abstract: QSIMDE SORB ANALİZİ VE QSIM'İN KESÎKLÎ-ZAMAN SİSTEMLERİNE GENİŞLETİLMESİ Fiziksel Sistemler üzerine nitel akıl yürütme, insanlara özgü sağduyu yeteneği ile fiziksel sistem modellerini birleştirerek bilgisayarlara, formel ve algoritmik bir akıl yürütme stratejisi olarak aktarmayı hedefleyen bir araştırma programıdır. Nitel benzetim algoritması QSIM, sistemin nitel davranışını, tek tek parametrelerin belirli durumlarda aldıkları değerlerin bir dizisi olarak vermektedir. Bu tezde QSIM'e iki yönde katkıda bulunulmuştur: Süre Analizi algoritması ve QSIM yaklaşımının kesikli-zaman sistemlerine genişletilmesi. IV DURATION ANALYSIS IN QSIM AND EXTENSION OF QSIM TO DISCRETE-TIME SYSTEMS Qualitative reasoning about physical systems is a research area which attempts to merge humans' common sense ability and physical system models into formalized and algorithmic reasoning strategies. Qualitative simulation algorithm QSIM furnishes a well- defined algorithm which can turn out the qualitative behavior of a given system as a sequence of states expressing the behaviors of individual parameters. The contributions presented in this thesis are two extensions to QSIM, a Duration Analysis algorithm and the extension of the approach over discrete-time systems. Duration analysis focuses on the discovery of temporal properties, by exploiting the model of kinematical relations and by transforming them into general reasoning strategies encompassing all physical systems described by qualitative constraints. It produces a list of comparison results on the durations of intervals, or in formal terms, a partially ordered symbolic duration set. For the extention of QSIM to discrete-time systems, the formalism put forward for a system of continuous functions is redefined and a mechanical way of converting difference equations characterizing discrete-time systems, into qualitative constraint equations is described. Next, the qualitative simulation algorithm is applied and the qualitative description of the behavior of the system is obtained. 107

Abstract: Significant discoveries were made concerning the role of symmetry in dynamical systems, work on the dynamics of low-dimensional dynamical systems (one and two dimensional real and complex systems), and progress in the use of symbolic computation tools for the study of dynamical systems. The development of the visualization tool and interface for studying dynamical systems, kaos, was partially funded through MSI. Research in interacting particle systems increased as they are attractive models useful in a wide variety of situations in physics, biology, and image processing. One of the great breakthroughs in the subject in the past five years was R. Durrett's development of methods for treating large classes of these models if one is willing to assume that the range of interaction is large or that the particles are moving at a fast rate. These assumptions are satisfied in many biological and physical systems and provide a reliable guide to the qualitative features of other systems, as well. Very significant work was done in the area of polytopes, generalized discriminants, and resultants. They established a conjecture of Baues arising in the geometry of loop spaces in homotopy theory. Research and development was done on Macaulay which has become one of the major computer algebra systems for computations in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. The system is in use world-wide. MSI-funded research ranged from the development of new, underlying theoretical mathematics to the actual implementation of the program. Automatic techniques were developed to generate differential equations that model physical systems. The work uses symbolic computation to generate the equations and ties together symbolic and numerical methods to make the equations easier to solve.

Abstract: Based on the view that symmetry recognition plays an essential role in human reasoning about the laws of physical phenomena, we propose a reasoning paradigm in which symmetry assist in the discovery of physical laws. Within this paradigm, symmetries are used as constraints which enable us to specify, derive, and generalize these equations. The symmetry-based reasoning is extracted and formalized from Einstein's work on relativity. We claim that the reasoning procedure thus formalized provides a general reasoning architecture that is common to dimensional analysis in engineering, mathematical proofs, and common sense reasoning. This symmetry-based reasoning system has been implemented as a symbol-processing system with a production system and a formula-processing system. Using the symmetry-based reasoning system, the equation of Black's Law of specific heat is demonstrated to be specifie, derived, and generalized.

148. Modeling Continuous-Time Random Processes in Digital Computer Simulations of Physical Systems

Abstract: This dissertation addresses the problem of determining the correct relationship between the statistics of a continuous random process and the statistics of a continuous random process and the statistics of a discrete random process and the statistics of a discrete random process used to simulate the continuous random process. The findings of this research are directly applicable to the general by ordinary differential equations. It is shown that to ensure a faithful digital simulation of a continuous random process, the noise statistics of the random number generator must be set to values drastically different from the noise statistics of the continuous random process. Further, it is established that the relationship between the continuous and discrete statistics is a function of the integration method used in the digital simulation. The proper functional relationship between the discrete and continuous noise statistics is derived for the class of Runge-Kutta integrators, the 4th order Adams-Bashforth integrator, and the Adams-Moulton corrector formula. The derived relationships are applied to a specific problem and are demonstrated by stimulation. The stimulation results are compared to exact solutions. Additionally, the requirement for proper operation of a variable-step-size algorithm is developed.

150. Selection of Noisy Sensors and Actuators for Regulation of Linear Systems.

Abstract: This research has developed and tested an algorithm which aids the controls engineer in placing sensors and actuators in a linear system to best achieve a set of variance specifications on the outputs and inputs of the system. The term best achieve has been defined to be the sensor and actuator configuration which enables a controller to do either of the following: Meet the input specifications while minimizing a sum of output variances normalized by their specification (i.e. input-constrained solution), or meet the output specifications while minimizing a sum of input variances normalized by their specification (i.e., output-constrained solution). The approach taken to solve this sensor and actuator selection (SAS) problem was to use LQG (Linear Quadratic Gaussian) theory to specify a structure for the controller, and then develop an algorithm (SASLQG) that places sensors and actuators in this controller structure to achieve either the input-constrained or output-constrained solution. The main advantage of this approach is the mathematical ease which LQG theory addresses variance constraints, and the main disadvantage is that there may be other controller structures which do better.
