This study presents ISEE 3 observations of anomalous electron distributions for which T-perpendicular exceeds T-parallel in the solar wind near 1 AU. Twelve anomaly events were identified, lasting from 24 min to 6 hours. These events generally share the following characteristics: (1) high plasma density, (2) low solar wind speed, (3) magnetic field which is nearly transverse to the flow, and (4) low electron and ion temperatures. The processes of solar wind adiabatic expansion and isotropization via Coulomb collisions could be expected to lead to such anomalous anisotropies under conditions similar to those observed. However, these conditions actually produce T-perpendicular greater than T-parallel for only a small fraction of the time, suggesting that other mechanisms are also important in regulating solar wind electron distributions.

This paper presents data on ISEE 3 observations of unusually anisotropic core electrons detected in the solar wind near 1 AU, which exhibited temperature (T) ratios T-parallel/T-perpendicular of 1.5 to 4. Distinct anisotropy events are described, together with the observed correlations between core temperature anisotropy and various other solar wind parameters. It was found that the periods of extreme electron anisotropy tended to be coincident with intervals of double ion beam, suggesting similar causal mechanisms for the two phenomena.

An examination of ISEE-3 data from 1978 reveal 25 electron heat flux dropout events ranging in duration from 20 min to over 11 hours. The heat flux dropouts are found to occur in association with high plasma densities, low plasma velocities, low ion and electron temperatures, and low magnetic field magnitudes. It is suggested that the heat flux dropout intervals may indicate that the spacecraft is sampling plasma regimes which are magnetically disconnected from the sun and instead are connected to the outer heliosphere at both ends.

Four large data sets of Venus ionopause observations, based on different definitions and observations by Pioneer Venus Orbiter field and particle instruments, are compared. Regardless of the definition chosen, the ionopause is observed to be higher on average at dawn than at dusk. The results of an empirical ionosphere model and a data analysis technique which minimizes orbital bias are combined to show that most or all of this asymmetry results from the effects of orbital bias and uneven sampling of solar wind conditions. However, an additional asymmetry is found in which the ionopause is displaced in the direction opposite to the motional electric field of the solar wind. This effect is attributed to asymmetric pickup of exospheric ions by the electric and magnetic fields in the magnetosheath. This ion pickup interpretation can be understood in terms of a previous observed magnetosheath magnetic field asymmetry. Quantitative analysis indicates that the transverse momentum imparted by the solar plasma to pickup particles in their initial gyration is transmitted by the magnetosheath magnetic field to the ionosphere boundary.

It is found that there occurred a geomagnetic storm on May 18/19, 1910 that cannot be dismissed as a recurrent storm. The period of storminess is close to the period of time at which the magnetic and plasma tail of Halley should have passed over the earth. The signature is worldwide and of the form and magnitude expected if the solar wind were shielded from the earth by the comet. Comparison with computer simulations applicable closer to the comet suggests that this interpretation is feasible. If this interpretation is correct, the 'lobes' of the Halley tail have deeper lows at 24 x 10 to the 6th km than in the present model at 7 x 10 to the 6th km downstream and are at least twice as wide.

The interaction of the solar wind with Venus is influenced by the pickup of newly born exospheric oxygen ions by the convecting magnetosheath plasma. The flow and field configuration of the magnetosheath plasma, together with the large gyroradius of the pickup ions, cause mass loading to occur preferentially on one side of the magnetosheath. The observed hemispherical asymmetry in the magnetic field in the near-planet magnetosheath, attributed to this pickup process, is confirmed by direct observation of the picked-up planetary particles. Test particle calculations show that a current system created by ion pickup has the appropriate location and magnitude to account for the magnetic field asymmetry. The results indicate that a fluid treatment of the Venus mass-loading problem is not entirely appropriate; a hybrid or kinetic model is necessary to incorporate the finite Larmor radius of the pickup particles which produces the observed asymmetry.

Energetic ions observed during the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) spacecraft flyby of comet Giacobini-Zinner provide information about both the constitution of comets and the plasma physical processes associated with their interaction with the solar wind. In this investigation the details of ion 'pickup,' in the limit where small-scale fluctuations in the plasma and magnetic field are neglected, are modeled by following the motion of a large number of initially cold, heavy (mass 18) ions in a global magnetohydrodynamic model of the local plasma and magnetic field. The results indicate how the background or macroscopic velocity and magnetic field structure of the comet can affect the average spatial and spectral characteristics of the observed cometary ions. These effects, which occur by virtue of forces associated with the compression and the curvature of the magnetic field in the presence of the stagnating plasma flow, can explain the double maxima in the time series of the energetic ion flux observed along the ICE trajectory.

During the Vega-1 encounter with Comet Halley, the magnetometer observed draping and compression of the interplanetary magnetic field. These are reproduced well by a three-dimensional MHD simulation of the cometary interaction. Rotations in the magnetic field similar to those at closest approach are also observed 2.75 hours earlier. It is suggested that both rotations correspond to the same IMF interval and that the spacecraft had overtaken the plasma and encountered 'older' magnetic field as it penetrated the coma. Analysis of the MHD model indicates that it should take about 3 to 5 hours for a solar wind parcel to pass from the unperturbed solar wind to Vega-1 at closest approach. A simulated magnetic field profile composed of nested sections for different IMF orientations closely resembles the observations. This result supports the hypothesis of layered magnetic orientations in the coma.

Previous observations at Venus show convincing evidence of planetary O(+) ion pickup by the largescale motional -V x B electric field in the magnetosheath when the interplanetary magnetic field is perpendicular to the solar wind flow. However, the presence of magnetic field fluctuations in the magnetosheath downstream from the quasi-parallel bow shock should allow pickup to occur even when the upstream magnetic field B and plasma velocity V are practically coaligned. Single-particle calculations are used to demonstrate the convecting magnetic field fluctuations similar to those observed in the Venus magnetosheath when the subsolar bow shock is quasi-parallel can efficiently accelerate cold planetary ions by means of the electric field associated with their transverse components. This ion pickup process, which is characterized by a spatial dependence determined by the bow shock shape and the orientation of the upstream magnetic field, is likely also to occur at Mars and may be effective at comets.

A data set of 18,000 low-altitude nightside vector measurements from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) magnetometer is used to establish a new upper limit on the intrinsic dipolar magnetic moment of Venus. Various techniques are used to search for coherence in the magnetic observations which might be attributable to such an intrinsic field, with negative results. A similar search is conducted for surface magnetism, that is, geographically correlated magnetic features, also with negative results. The present study represents the best limits that PVO observations can provide and is limited by the amount of low-altitude nightside data available. New upper limit to the magnetic moment is 8.4 x 10 to the 10th T/cu m or about 10 to the -5th of the terrestrial magnetic moment. This is a factor of four lower than the previous upper limit.

The dayside ionospheric magnetic field of Venus has been modeled from two different points of view. The Cloutier et al. electrodynamic model makes specific predictions about the behavior of the global magnetic field configuration that can be compared with those expected from the alternate diffusion/convection model. Although the diffusion/convection model is currently only one-dimensional, it is found that it is consistent with the observations in several areas where the three-dimensional electrodynamic model is not.

Over four Venus years of low altitude nightside PVO magnetometer observations are used to establish a new upper limit for the magnetic moment of Venus. Improvements over previous studies include data coverage and new instrument calibration information. The upper limit on an internal dipole moment is determined to be 8.4 x 10 to the 10th T cu m.

Continuous and highly variable emissions at 130.4 nm are observed on the night-side of Venus by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter ultraviolet spectrometer. The emissions have a typical intensity of 10-20 R, occasionally exceed 100 R, and have a dawn-dusk symmetry in brightness during periods of unusual intensity. Possible energy source for this 'aurora' is the precipitation of suprathermal electrons. Field and particle observations suggest an additional source for the brightest emissions which is associated with solar flares and/or interplanetary shocks.

A data set consisting of nearly six Venus years of Pioneer Venus Orbiter magnetometer data is analyzed in order to describe the configuration of the magnetosheath. A coordinate system is developed which isolates the effects of the solar wind flow and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The data indicate that the magnetosheath field magnitude is responsive to solar wind dynamic pressure and that the compression of the upstream field is controlled by magnetosonic Mach number. The draping of the field is similar to that predicted by gasdynamic modeling; specific draping features include distinct dependence on the radial and the transverse components of the IMF, and a tendency of the field to encircle the planet at low altitude. Certain features of the processes of mass loading by magnetosheath fluctuations and by the motional electric field are examined. Magnetic fluctuations can dominate the magnetosheath field for periods of low interplanetary cone angle and in general for the magnetosheath regions near the quasi-parallel part of the bow shock. The magnetosheath magnetic field magnitude displays a hemispherical asymmetry; the sense of this asymmetry is controlled by the cross-flow component of the IMF in a manner which indicates that ion pickup by the convective electric field occurs preferentially in one hemisphere. The results of this survey indicate that mass loading is a significant process which should be incorporated into computational models but that a fluid treatment of the planetary ion component may not be appropriate.

In a cometary tail disconnection event the plasma tail appears to separate from the coma and to accelerate away from it. As this occurs a new tail begins to form. It is proposed that these disconnections arise in a manner analogous to geomagnetic substorms, i.e., by the formation of a strongly reconnecting region in the near tail that forms a magnetic island in the coma and ejects the plasma tail by strengthening the magnetic 'slingshot' within the tail. This reconnection process may be triggered by several different processes, such as interplanetary shocks or variations in the Alfven Mach number.

Interplanetary field enhancements (IFE's) are unusual nearly symmetric increases in the strength of the interplanetary magnetic field lasting tens of minutes to hours. Examples of interplanetary field enhancements are compared with MHD models and with the data obtained by the ICE spacecraft at Giacobini-Zinner. These comparisons suggest that the varying properties of IFE's are due to the fact that some events are due to passages in front of the nucleus, others in the near tail and yet others in the distant tail.

Six Venus years of Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) data are analyzed in a coordinate system which isolates magnetic effects. The field draping pattern features two lobes easily identifiable even in the near planet region. The magnetosheath magnetic magnitude has a hemispherical asymmetry controlled by the IMF orientation in a manner suggesting preferrential ion pickup in one hemisphere. This result complements recent findings that the bow shock position is responsive to IMF direction. Examination of the ionopause position to evaluate ionospheric effects on the overall asymmetry of thfe Venus-solar wind interaction produces negative but not conclusive results.

The rise in periapsis altitude with time has allowed the Pioneer Venus spacecraft to begin probing the subsolar Venus bow shock. This has allowed the altitude of the subsolar bow shock to be determined by in situ observations for the first time. The observed altitude of 2280 km at the nose together with the previously determined terminator altitude can be used to infer the shape of the obstacle using the gasdynamic model of the solar wind interaction with Venus. When this shape is compared to the measured locations of the Venus ionopause (defined as the point where the magnetosheath magnetic field pressure and ionospheric thermal pressures are equal), it is found that the observed ionopause position is too low to qualify as the obstacle. It is inferred that a layer of the mass loaded plasma in the magnetosheath forms the magnetic barrier.

It is noted that, while the Pioneer Venus orbiter detected an unusual IMF and solar wind plasma disturbance on Feb. 11, 1982, the Venera 13 and 14 spacecraft were conducting IMF measurements 6 million miles away which exhibit very weak disturbances several hours after the peak of the Pioneer Venus event. It is speculated that, if the event had been a solar-initiated disturbance, it should have been detected in virtually unaltered form by Venera 13 and 14; whose data therefore furnish further evidence for the cometary nature of this event.

The shape of the dayside Venus ionopause, and its dependence on solar wind parameters, is examined using Pioneer Venus Orbiter field and particle data. The ionopause is defined here as the altitude of pressure equality between magnetosheath pressure and ionospheric thermal pressure; its typical altitudes range from about 300 km near the subsolar point to about 900 km near the terminator. A strong correlation between ionopause altitude and magnetosheath magnetic pressure is demonstrated; correlation between magnetic pressure and the normally incident component of solar wind dynamic pressure is also evident. The data support the hypothesis of control of the ionopause altitude by solar wind dynamic pressure, manifested in the sheath as magnetic pressure. The presence of large scale magnetic fields in the ionosphere is observed primarily when dynamic pressure is high and the ionopause is low.

Observations from the Pioneer Venus orbiter magnetometer reveal the presence of large-scale magnetic fields in the dayside ionosphere during or after periods of high solar wind dynamic pressure. Various hypotheses have been proposed concerning the spatial and temporal evolution of these field structures. The hypothesis that the field is produced by a diffusion/convection process rather than by currents driven by electric fields resulting from the solar wind interaction is examined. Dynamic pressure variations occur on various time scales at Venus, producing transient and quasi-steady magnetization features. A one-dimensional diffusion/convection calculation is performed, using typical ionopause field and pressure values for a variety of altitudes. The Venus ionopause is considered to be the altitude at which ionospheric thermal pressure is equal to the magnetosheath magnetic pressure, which in turn is well correlated with the normal component of solar wind dynamic pressure. A subsolar model of downward plasma velocity in the 140-290 km range is used. The calculated growth of the ionospheric magnetic field, and the resulting quasi-steady altitude profiles, compare favorably with the observed profiles. The majority of the observed magnetic structures are best explained as the quasi-steady effects of the prevailing solar wind dynamic pressure, which determines the altitude and magnetic field strength of the ionopause boundary.

In February, 1982, an unusual enhancement of the IMF was observed by the Pioneer Venus orbiter at 0.72 AU. The three discontinuities within this large disturbance, previously suggested to be due to the possible passage of a comet, are examined in view of the alternative possibility of their representing the first observation to date of a cometary shock. It is noted that number density, temperature, and velocity changes, as well as the magnetic structure of the discontinuities, are consistent with this hypothesis.

Titanium fasteners are used in large quantities throughout the aircraft industry. Most of this usage is in aluminum structure; where titanium structure exists, titanium fasteners are logically used as well. Titanium fasteners offer potential weight savings to the designer at a cost of approximately $30 per pound of weight saved. Proper and least cost usage must take into consideration type of fastener per application, galvanic couples and installation characteristics of protective coatings, cosmetic appearance, paint adhesion, installation forces and methods available and fatigue performance required.
