In this work we study by numerical methods the phase dynamics in ballistic graphene-based short Josephson junctions. The supercurrent through a graphene junction shows a non-sinusoidal phase-dependence, unlike a conventional junction ruled by the well-known d.c. Josephson relation. A superconductor-graphene-superconductor system exhibits superconductive quantum metastable states similar to those present in normal current-biased JJs. We explore the effects of thermal and correlated fluctuations on the escape time from these metastable states, when the system is stimulated by an oscillating bias current. As a first step, the analysis is carried out in the presence of an external Gaussian white noise source, which mimics the random fluctuations of the bias current. Varying the noise intensity, it is possible to analyze the behavior of the escape time from a superconductive metastable state in different temperature regimes. Noise induced phenomena, such as resonant activation and noise induced stability, are observed. The study is extended to the case of a coloured Gaussian noise source, analyzing how the escape time from the metastable state is affected by correlated random fluctuations for different values of the noise correlation time., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Two parallel stacks of coupled Josephson junctions are investigated to clarify the physics of transitions between the rotating and oscillating states and their effect on the IV-characteristics of the system. The detailed study of phase dynamics and bias dependence of the superconducting and diffusion currents allows one to explain all features of simulated IV-characteristics and demonstrate the correspondence in their behavior. The coupling between JJ in the stacks leads to the branching of IV-characteristics and a decrease in the hysteretic region. The crucial role of the diffusion current in the formation of the IV-characteristic of the parallel stacks of coupled Josephson junctions is demonstrated. We discuss the effect of symmetry in a number of junctions in the stacks and show a decrease of the branching in the symmetrical stacks. The observed effects might be useful for development of superconducting electronic devices based on intrinsic Josephson junctions.

A time dependent thermal model for a superconducting constriction based weak-link (WL) is discussed for investigating the deterministic dynamics of its temperature and phase. A new dynamic regime is found where a non-zero voltage exists across the WL and its temperature stabilizes between the bath temperature and superconductor's critical temperature. This regime exists over a limited bias current range and gives rise to a new hysteretic regime in current-voltage characteristics. Employing both Bayesian statistics and the theory of nonlinear dynamics, we present a practically efficient method to extract a phase description of weakly coupled limit-cycle oscillators directly from time series observed in a rhythmic system. As a practical application, we numerically demonstrate that this method can retrieve all the interaction functions from the fluctuating rhythmic neuronal activity exhibited by a network of asymmetrically coupled neurons. This method can be regarded as a type of statistical phase reduction method that requires no detailed modeling, and as such, it is a very practical and reliable method in application to data-driven studies of rhythmic systems., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We propose a natural two-speed model for the phase dynamics of Si(111) 7$\times$7 phase transition to high temperature unreconstructed phase. We formulate the phase dynamics by using phase-field method and adaptive mesh refinement. Our simulated results show that a 7$\times$7 island decays with its shape kept unchanged, and its area decay rate is shown to be a constant increasing with its initial area. LEEM experiments concerned are explained, which confirms that the dimer chains and corner holes are broken first in the transition, and then the stacking fault is remedied slowly. We generalize our recent approach to reconstruction of phase dynamics of coupled oscillators from data [B. Kralemann et al., Phys. Rev. E, 77, 066205 (2008)] to cover the case of small networks of coupled periodic units. Starting from the multivariate time series, we first reconstruct genuine phases and then obtain the coupling functions in terms of these phases. The partial norms of these coupling functions quantify directed coupling between oscillators. We illustrate the method by different network motifs for three coupled oscillators and for random networks of five and nine units. We formulate a theory for the collective phase description of globally coupled noisy limit-cycle oscillators exhibiting macroscopic rhythms. Collective phase equations describing such macroscopic rhythms are derived by means of a two-step phase reduction. The collective phase sensitivity and collective phase coupling functions, which quantitatively characterize the macroscopic rhythms, are illustrated using three representative models of limit-cycle oscillators. As an important result of the theory, we demonstrate noise-induced anti-phase synchronization between macroscopic rhythms by direct numerical simulations of the three models., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

We study the phase distribution and its dynamics in spin-orbit coupled two component ultracold Bosons for finite size system. Using an inhomogeneous meanfield analysis we demonstrate how phase distribution evolves as we tune the spin-orbit coupling $\gamma$ and $t$, the spin-independent hopping. For $t>>\gamma$ we find the homogeneous superfluid phase. As we increase $\gamma$, differences in the phases of the order parameter grows leading to twisted superfluid phase. For $t \sim \gamma$ competing orderings in the phase distribution is observed. At large $\gamma$ limit a Ferro-Magnetic stripe ordering appears along the diagonal. We explain that this is due to the frustration bought in by the spin-orbit interaction. Isolated vortex formation is also shown to appear. We also investigate the possible collective modes. In deep superfluid regime we derive the equation of motion for the phases following a semi-classical approximation. Imaginary frequencies indicating the damped modes are seen to appear and the dynamics of lowest normal modes are discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 7 Figures

Using the approach of low-energy effective field theory, the phase diagram is studied for a mixture of two species of pseudospin-$\1/2$ Bose atoms with interspecies spin-exchange. There are four mean-field regimes on the parameter plane of $g_e$ and $g_z$, where $g_e$ is the interspecies spin-exchange interaction strength, while $g_z$ is the difference between the interaction strength of interspecies scattering without spin-exchange of equal spins and that of unequal spins. Two regimes, with $|g_z| > |g_e|$, correspond to ground states with the total spins of the two species parallel or antiparallel along $z$ direction, and the low energy excitations are equivalent to those of two-component spinless Bosons. The other two regimes, with $|g_e| > |g_z|$, correspond to ground states with the total spins of the two species parallel or antiparallel on $xy$ plane, and the low energy excitations are described by a sine-Gordon model coupled with a free scalar field, where the effective fields are combinations of the phases of the original four Boson fields. In (1+1)-dimension, they are described by Kosterlitz-Thouless renormalization group (RG) equations, and there are three sectors in the phase plane of a scaling dimension and a dimensionless parameter proportional to the strength of the cosine interaction, both depending on the densities. An effective white-noise Langevin equation is derived that describes long-time phase dynamics of a limit-cycle oscillator subjected to weak stationary colored noise. Effective drift and diffusion coefficients are given in terms of the phase sensitivity of the oscillator and the correlation function of the noise, and are explicitly calculated for oscillators with sinusoidal phase sensitivity functions driven by two typical colored Gaussian processes. The results are verified by numerical simulations using several types of stochastic or chaotic noise. The drift and diffusion coefficients of oscillators driven by chaotic noise exhibit anomalous dependence on the oscillator frequency, reflecting the peculiar power spectrum of the chaotic noise., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

We develop an effective description of noise-induced oscillations based on deterministic phase dynamics. The phase equation is constructed to exhibit correct frequency and distribution density of noise-induced oscillations. In the simplest one-dimensional case the effective phase equation is obtained analytically, whereas for more complex situations a simple method of data processing is suggested. This paper studies the effects of distributed delay coupling on the dynamics in a system of non-identical coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. For uniform and gamma delay distribution kernels, conditions for amplitude death are obtained in terms of average frequency, frequency detuning and parameters of the coupling, including coupling strength and phase, as well as the mean time delay and the width of the delay distribution. To gain further insight into the dynamics inside amplitude death regions, eigenvalues of the corresponding characteristic equations are computed numerically. Oscillatory dynamics of the system is also investigated using amplitude and phase representation. We have investigated the classical phase dynamics of underdamped ferromagnetic Josephson junctions by measuring the switching probability in both the stationary and nonstationary regimes down to 350 mK. We found the escape temperature to be the bath temperature, with no evidence of additional spin noise. In the nonstationary regime, we have performed a pump-probe experiment on the Josephson phase by increasing the frequency of the junction current bias. We show that an incomplete energy relaxation leads to dynamical phase bifurcation. Bifurcation manifests itself as premature switching, resulting in a bimodal switching distribution. We directly measure the phase relaxation time by following the evolution of the bimodal switching distribution when varying the bias frequency. We present a theoretical description of the phase dynamics and its corresponding electrodynamics in a stack of inductively coupled intrinsic Josephson junctions of layered high-$T_c$ superconductors in the absence of an external magnetic field. Depending on the spatial structure of the gauge invariant phase difference, the dynamic state is classified into: state with kink, state without kink, and state with solitons. It is revealed that in the state with phase kink, the plasma is coupled to the cavity and the plasma oscillation is enhanced. In contrast, in the state without kink, the plasma oscillation is weak. It points a way to enhance the radiation of electromagnetic from high-$T_c$ superconductors. We also perform numerical simulations to check the theory and a good agreement is achieved. The radiation pattern of the state with and without kink is calculated, which may serve as a fingerprint of the dynamic state realized by the system. At last, the power radiation of the state with solitons is calculated by simulations. The possible state realized in the recent experiments is discussed in the viewpoint of the theoretical description. We probe the physical mechanism behind the known phenomenon of power synchronization of two diode lasers that are mutually coupled via their delayed optical fields. In a diode laser, the amplitude and the phase of the optical field are coupled by the so-called linewidth enhancement factor, $\alpha$. In this work, we explore the role of optical phases of the electric fields in amplitude (and hence power) synchronization through $\alpha$ in such mutually delay-coupled diode laser systems. Our numerical results show that the synchronization of optical phases drives the powers of lasers to synchronized death regimes. We also find that as $\alpha$ varies for different diode lasers, the system goes through a sequence of in-phase amplitude-death states. Within the windows between successive amplitude-death regions, the cross-correlation between the field amplitudes exhibits a universal power-law behaviour with respect to $\alpha$., Comment: J. Phys. We investigate the regularizing behavior of two-phase Stefan problem near initial data. The main step in the analysis is to establish that in any given scale, the scaled solution is very close to a Lipschitz profile in space-time. We introduce a new decomposition argument to generalize the preceding ones by Choi, Jerion and Kim([CJK1], [CJK2]) and by Choi and Kim([CK]) on one-phase problems.

We have studied both theoretically and experimentally how an LC series circuit connected in parallel to a Josephson junction influences the Josephson dynamics. The presence of the shell circuit introduces two energy scales, which in specific cases can strongly differ from the plasma frequency of the isolated junction. Josephson junctions were manufactured using Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb fabrication technology with various on-chip LC shunt circuits. Spectroscopic measurements in the quantum limit show an excellent agreement with theory taking into account the shunt inductance and capacitance in the Resistively and Capacitively Shunted Junction model. The results clearly show that the dynamics of the system are two-dimensional, resulting in two resonant modes of the system. These findings have important implications for the design and operation of Josephson junctions based quantum bits.

We study the collective dynamics of a driven two mode Bose-Hubbard model in the Josephson interaction regime. The classical phase-space is mixed, with chaotic and regular components, that determine the dynamical nature of the fringe-visibility. For weak off-resonant drive, where the chaotic component is small, the many-body dynamics corresponds to that of a Kapitza pendulum, with the relative-phase $\varphi$ between the condensates playing the role of the pendulum angle. Using a master equation approach we show that the modulation of the inter-site potential barrier stabilizes the $\varphi=\pi$ 'inverted pendulum' coherent state, and protects the fringe visibility., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Following pioneering work by Fan and Slemrod who studied the effect of artificial viscosity terms, we consider the system of conservation laws arising in liquid-vapor phase dynamics with {\sl physical} viscosity and capillarity effects taken into account. Following Dafermos we consider self-similar solutions to the Riemann problem and establish uniform total variation bounds, allowing us to deduce new existence results. Our analysis cover both the hyperbolic and the hyperbolic-elliptic regimes and apply to arbitrarily large Riemann data. The proofs rely on a new technique of reduction to two coupled scalar equations associated with the two wave fans of the system. Strong $L^1$ convergence to a weak solution of bounded variation is established in the hyperbolic regime, while in the hyperbolic-elliptic regime a stationary singularity near the axis separating the two wave fans, or more generally an almost-stationary oscillating wave pattern (of thickness depending upon the capillarity-viscosity ratio) are observed which prevent the solution to have globally bounded variation., Comment: 30 pages

The Josephson effects associated with quantum tunneling of Cooper pairs manifest as nonlinear relations between the superconductivity phase difference and the bias current and voltage. Many novel phenomena appear, such as Shapiro steps in dc cuurent-voltage (IV) characteristics of a Josephson junction under microwave shining, which can be used as a voltage standard. Inversely, the Josephson effects provide a unique way to generate high-frequency electromagnetic (EM) radiation by dc bias voltage. The discovery of cuprate high-Tc superconductors accelerated the effort to develop novel source of EM waves based on a stack of atomically dense-packed intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs), since the large superconductivity gap covers the whole terahertz frequency band. Very recently, strong and coherent terahertz radiations have been successfully generated from a mesa structure of $\rm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}}$ single crystal which works both as the source of energy gain and as the cavity for resonance. It is then found theoretically that, due to huge inductive coupling of IJJs produced by the nanometer junction separation and the large London penetration depth of order of $\rm{\mu m}$ of the material, a novel dynamic state is stabilized in the coupled sine-Gordon system, in which $\pm \pi$ kinks in phase differences are developed responding to the standing wave of Josephson plasma and are stacked alternatively in the c-axis. This novel solution of the inductively coupled sine-Gordon equations captures the important features of experimental observations. The theory predicts an optimal radiation power larger than the one available to date by orders of magnitude, and thus suggests the technological relevance of the phenomena., Comment: review article (69 pages, 30 figures)

We demonstrate in numerical experiments that estimators of strength and directionality of coupling between oscillators based on modeling of their phase dynamics [D.A. Smirnov and B.P. Bezruchko, Phys. Rev. E 68, 046209 (2003)] are widely applicable. Namely, although the expressions for the estimators and their confidence bands are derived for linear uncoupled oscillators under the influence of independent sources of Gaussian white noise, they turn out to allow reliable characterization of coupling from relatively short time series for different properties of noise, significant phase nonlinearity of the oscillators, and non-vanishing coupling between them. We study the model of a massive inflaton field $\phi$ coupled to another scalar filed $\chi$ with interaction term $g^2\phi^2\chi^2$ for the first stage of preheating. We obtain the the behavior of the phase in terms of the iteration of a simple family of circle maps. We make a geometric study of the phases acquired by a general pure bipartite two level system after a cyclic unitary evolution. The geometric representation of the two particle Hilbert space makes use of Hopf fibrations. It allows for a simple description of the dynamics of the entangled state's phase during the whole evolution. The global phase after a cyclic evolution is always an entire multiple of $\pi$ for all bipartite states, a result that does not depend on the degree of entanglement. There are three different types of phases combining themselves so as to result in the $n \pi$ global phase. They can be identified as dynamical, geometrical and topological. Each one of them can be easily identified using the presented geometric description. The interplay between them depends on the initial state and on its trajectory and the results obtained are shown to be in connection to those on mixed states phases., Comment: 9 figures, slightly different version from the accepted one
