To the Editor: Human embryonic stem-cell research may lead to new methods of drug discovery, insights into mechanisms of disease, and eventually, cellular therapies. The potential benefit to patient populations may depend partially on the diversity of the stem-cell lines that are available for research and clinical use. The possibility of replacing the originally discovered and widely used DNA reprogramming transcription factors is stimulating enormous effort to identify more effective compounds that would not alter the genetic information. Here, we describe the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSc) from head-derived primary culture of mouse embryonic cells using small chemical inhibitors of the MEK and TGF-beta pathways without delivery of exogenous transcription factors. These iPSc express standard pluripotency markers and retain their potential to differentiate into cells of all germ layers. Our data indicate that head-derived embryonic neural cells might have the reprogramming potential while neither the same primary cells cultivated over five passages in vitro nor a cell population derived from adult brain possesses this capacity. Our results reveal the potential for small molecules to functionally replace routinely used transcription factors and lift the veil on molecular regulation controlling pluripotency. The conditions described here could provide a platform upon which other genome non integrative and safer reprogramming processes could be developed. This work also shows novel potential for developing embryonic neural cells.

In the paper the detectability of a fire by a microwave radiometer is investigated. Simulations of several scenarios and together with outdoor measurement were performed in order to confirm detectability of the fire of specific temperature distributions and dimensions. Various scenarios for fire sensing were numerically modeled and simulated. Real parameters of antenna radiation pattern and radiometer sensitivity were taken into account. The concept of fire detectability verification was tested on real measurement data and then applied in a large scale on analyses of scaled airborne sensing of an environment. The results clearly indicate the possibilities and limits of detection with currently available radiometers.

The generation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) of sufficient quantity and quality remains a major challenge for biomedical application. Here we present an efficient feeder-free, high-density monolayer system in which hPSCs become SSEA-3-high and gradually more viable than their feeder-dependent counterparts without changes attributed to culture adaptation. As a consequence, monolayer hPSCs possess advantages over their counterparts in embryoid body development, teratoma formation, freezing as a single-cell suspension, and colony-forming efficiency. Importantly, this monolayer culture system is reversible, preserving the competence of hPSCs to gradually reacquire features of colony growth, if necessary. Therefore, the monolayer culture system is highly suitable for long-term, large-scale propagation of hPSCs, which is necessary in drug development and pluripotent stem cell-based therapies.

Stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (CMs) hold great hopes for myocardium regeneration because of their ability to produce functional cardiac cells in large quantities. They also hold promise in dissecting the molecular principles involved in heart diseases and also in drug development, owing to their ability to model the diseases using patient-specific human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived CMs. The CM properties essential for the desired applications are frequently evaluated through morphologic and genotypic screenings. Even though these characterizations are necessary, they cannot in principle guarantee the CM functionality and their drug response. The CM functional characteristics can be quantified by phenotype assays, including electrophysiological, optical, and/or mechanical approaches implemented in the past decades, especially when used to investigate responses of the CMs to known stimuli (eg, adrenergic stimulation). Such methods can be used to indirectly determine the electrochemomechanics of the cardiac excitation-contraction coupling, which determines important functional properties of the hPSC-derived CMs, such as their differentiation efficacy, their maturation level, and their functionality. In this work, we aim to systematically review the techniques and methodologies implemented in the phenotype characterization of hPSC-derived CMs. Further, we introduce a novel approach combining atomic force microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, and external electrophysiology through microelectrode arrays. We demonstrate that this novel method can be used to gain unique information on the complex excitation-contraction coupling dynamics of the hPSC-derived CMs.

The aim of this study is to assess the toxicity of simazine in different developmental stages of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) on the basis of mortality, early ontogeny, occurrence of morphological anomalies, growth rate, and Fulton's condition factor during and at the conclusion of the test.The toxicity tests were performed on carp according to OECD 210 methodologies. The developmental stages of carp were exposed to simazine at four concentrations, 0.06, (reported concentration in Czech rivers), 60, 600, and 3000 µg/l for 36 days and compared to carp in a non-treated control group.Simazine in concentration 0.06 µg/l had no effect on early life stages of carp. Simazine in concentration 600 and 3000 µg/l caused decrease of mass and total length of carp. Fish exposed to three highest levels of simazine showed alteration of tubular system of caudal kidney. On the basis of histopatological changes the values of LOEC = 60 µg/l, NOEC = 0.06 µg/l for simazine were estimated.Chronic simazine exposure of early-life stages of common carp affected their growth rate, and histology. Some of the changes were observed only at higher exposures (600, 3000 µg/l), but change founded in caudal kidney was affected in fish exposed to the second lowest concentration tested (i.e., 60 µg/l), which is about 10 µg/l higher than reported in Colorado rivers in recent years. Concentrations of simazine in World rivers have been reported to generally vary in the range 0.0003-49.20 µg/l.

This study presents a rate of bioaccumulation of some metal concentrations in the muscle of five common cyprinid fish species (gudgeon - Gobio gobio, Europen chub - Leuciscus cephalus, barbel - Barbus barbus, roach - Rutilus rutilus, and nase - Chondrostoma nasus).Besides, correlations among selected metals as well as standard length and total weight and order of metal accumulation in the fish muscle were determined.Recorded metal concentrations (mg/kg wet weight basis) ranged as follows: Fe 4.23-22.95, Mn 0.10-0.72, Zn 16.26-166.90, Cu 15.39-25.97, Ni 0.00-3.72, Pb 0.00-1.81, and Cd 0.00-0.11.The Slovak permissible limit for Cu (10.0 mg/kg), Ni (0.5 mg/kg), Pb (0.2 mg/kg) and Cd (0.05 mg/kg) defined in the Codex Alimentarius for safe human consumption exceeded in 100%, 12%, 6% and 10% of analyzed samples for Cu, Ni, Pb and Cd respectively. On an average, the order of metal concentrations in the fish muscle was: ZnCuFeMnNiPbCd.

The paper introduces a utilization of a radiowave radiometer based subsystem for on-line monitoring and prediction of actual atmospheric influences for adjacent free space optical link. A measurement campaign has been accomplished with focus on atmospheric effects relating with reliability of free-space optical links. Together with the optical link, the microwave radiometer and meteorological stations were accommodated to the campaign in order to observe noise temperature changes joined by time variant fluctuations of temperature, humidity, pressure and refractivity. Combined characteristics of atmospheric parameters were evaluated and the metric based on noise temperature was proposed for the precipitation detection preceding optical link fades.

Studies of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) commonly describe the nonfunctional p53-p21 axis of the G1/S checkpoint pathway with subsequent relevance for cell cycle regulation and the DNA damage response (DDR). Importantly, p21 mRNA is clearly present and upregulated after the DDR in hESCs, but p21 protein is not detectable. In this article, we provide evidence that expression of p21 protein is directly regulated by the microRNA (miRNA) pathway under standard culture conditions and after DNA damage. The DDR in hESCs leads to upregulation of tens of miRNAs, including hESC-specific miRNAs such as those of the miR-302 family, miR-371-372 family, or C19MC miRNA cluster. Most importantly, we show that the hESC-enriched miRNA family miR-302 (miR-302a, miR-302b, miR-302c, and miR-302d) directly contributes to regulation of p21 expression in hESCs and, thus, demonstrate a novel function for miR-302s in hESCS. The described mechanism elucidates the role of miRNAs in regulation of important molecular pathway governing the G1/S transition checkpoint before as well as after DNA damage.

Free-space optical (FSO) links are perspective wireless optical communication systems utilizing modulated laser radiation to transmission of information. Because of propagation of the light through an atmosphere in case of a terrestrial link, strong dependence on weather conditions is observed. Several mitigation techniques were investigated, for an instance beam tracking, spatial diversity in multiple-input multiple-output systems and a wavelength diversity technique. In this paper, performance of FSO and radio-frequency (RF) hybrid link working at the wavelength of 850 nm and 5 GHz, respectively, is analyzed in specific urban area.

Recent toxicology, in accordance with recommendations from the European Council, has demanded decrease in the number of vertebrates used in toxicology testing and their partial replacement with invertebrate animals, plants or even organ, tissue, or cell cultures. During the last 50 years various invertebrate species have been tested for their sensitivity to many chemical or physical agents to prove their possible use for pre-screening tests. To the most valuable organisms available for ecotoxicity testing belong crustaceans of the Artemia genus, commonly known as brine shrimps.

The aim of this work was to determine antioxidant capacity of beverages containing black, white, and green tea extracts using the photochemiluminescence method, and to monitor its changes based on the storage temperature and time. Samples were stored at two different temperatures (refrigerated at 4°C and laboratory temperature 22°C), analyzed after opening of the original package, and consequently after 4 and 7 days. Results of the antioxidant capacity are expressed as the standard equivalents, that is, ascorbic acid in mmol/L. The highest mean value of the antioxidant capacity was found after opening of the original package in fruit-juice-enriched samples and totaled 9.793 mmol/L. This group revealed significant dependence (P<0.05) not only on the storage time, but also temperature. In samples without added fruit juices containing preservatives the value was 0.428 mmol/L. This group showed significant dependence (P<0.05) on the decrease of antioxidant capacity only when based on the storage time. Samples without fruit juices or preservatives showed significant decrease in the antioxidant capacity (P<0.05) after 4 days of storage based on the storage time. The dependence on temperature was revealed only after 7 days of storage.

For human embryonic stem cells (ESC) to be used in cell replacement therapies, they must be grown under good manufacturing conditions in a chemically defined medium that lacks animal proteins. This study examined the ability of a newly designed medium containing the plant-derived serum replacement VegetaCell and other reagents of human origin to support undifferentiated growth and pluripotency of human ESC. This medium was tested in several culture systems, using human fibroblasts as a feeder layer or Matrigel in a feeder-free culture. Even under the most stringent feeder-free conditions without conditioned medium, human ESC exhibited an undifferentiated morphology, expressed markers of undifferentiated cells, demonstrated high alkaline phosphatase activity and multilineage differentiation and retained a normal karyotype. Compared with human ESC grown in standard culture conditions, human ESC maintained in humanized VegetaCell medium show longer cell cycles and decreased cell death. The availability of an animal protein-free medium supplemented with the low-cost VegetaCell reagent expands the repertoire of media for culturing human ESC as well as induced pluripotent stem cells for drug testing and cell replacement therapy.

To evaluate intracardiac findings near leads and causes of death in pacemaker/defibrillator patients.Special autopsy was performed on 78 patients deceased in a hospital. Age at death was 77.9 +/- 10.0, implantation-death interval 4.0 +/- 3.3 years, ventricular leads n = 78, and atrial leads n = 21. Thrombi along leads in brachiocephalic vein/upper caval vein (BV/UCV) were found in 22 (7), in right atrium (RA) in 11 (8), and in right ventricle (RV) in 11 cases. Bipolar lead rings were fixed by fibrous tissue in 43 (4) cases. Connective tissue bridges and tunnels were found in BV/UCV in 44 (13), in RA in 17 (15), and in RV in 68 cases, with a length of 0.2-12.0 cm. Right ventricular leads in tricuspidal orifice were fixed by fibrous tissue in 11 and penetrating chordae in 25 cases. Main causes of death were: heart failure in 35, pulmonary embolism in 9, and myocardial infarction in 11 cases.We have found (i) thrombi on ventricular/atrial leads in 33/48%, (ii) bipolar lead rings fixed by fibrous tissue in 68/22%, (iii) connective tissue bridges or tunnels in ventricle/atrium in 87/71%, and (iv) ventricular leads fixed to valve or penetrating chordae in 46% of patients. We do recommend caution when extracting leads.

Background aims Microvesicles (MV) shed from the plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells, including human embryonic stem cells (hESC), contain proteins, lipids and RNA and serve as mediators of cell-to-cell communication. However, they may also contain immunogenic membrane domains and infectious particles acquired from xenogenic components of the culture milieu. Therefore, MV represent a potential risk for clinical application of cell therapy. Methods We tested the ability of hESC and their most commonly used feeder cells, mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEF), to produce MV. We found that hESC are potent producers of MV, whereas mitotically inactivated MEF do not produce any detectable MV. We therefore employed a combined proteomic approach to identify the molecules that constitute the major components of MV from hESC maintained in a standard culture setting with xenogenic feeder cells. Results In purified MV fractions, we identified a total of 22 proteins, including five unique protein species that are known to be highly expressed in invasive cancers and participate in cellular activation, metastasis and inhibition of apoptosis. Moreover, we found that hESC-derived MV contained the immunogenic agents apolipoprotein and transferrin, a source of Neu5Gc, as well as mouse retroviral Gag protein. Conclusions These findings indicate that MV represent a mechanism by which hESC communicate; however, they also serve as potential carriers of immunogenic and pathogenic compounds acquired from environment. Our results highlight a potential danger regarding the use of hESC that have previously been exposed to animal proteins and cells.

Cancer stem cells are cancer cells that originate from the transformation of normal stem cells. The most important property of any stem cell is the ability to self-renew. Through this property, there are striking parallels between normal stem cells and cancer stem cells. Both cell types share various markers of “stemness”. In particular, normal stem cells and cancer stem cells utilize similar molecular mechanisms to drive self-renewal, and similar signaling pathways may induce their differentiation.The fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2) pathway is one of the most significant regulators of human embryonic stem cell (hESC) self-renewal and cancer cell tumorigenesis. Here we summarize recent data on the effects of FGF-2 and its receptors on hESCs and leukemic stem/progenitor cells. Also, we discuss the similarities of these findings with stem cell renewal and differentiation phenotypes.

Although the detection of several components of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling pathway in human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) has been reported, the functionality of that pathway and effects on cell fate decisions are yet to be established. In this study we characterized expression of FGF-2, the prototypic member of the FGF family, and its receptors (FGFRs) in undifferentiated and differentiating hESCs; subsequently, we analyzed the effects of FGF-2 on hESCs, acting as both exogenous and endogenous factors. We have determined that undifferentiated hESCs are abundant in several molecular-mass isoforms of FGF-2 and that expression pattern of these isoforms remains unchanged under conditions that induce hESC differentiation. Significantly, FGF-2 is released by hESCs into the medium, suggesting an autocrine activity. Expression of FGFRs in undifferentiated hESCs follows a specific pattern, with FGFR1 being the most abundant species and other receptors showing lower expression in the following order: FGFR1 --> FGFR3 --> FGFR4 --> FGFR2. Initiation of differentiation is accompanied by profound changes in FGFR expression, particularly the upregulation of FGFR1. When hESCs are exposed to exogenous FGF-2, extracellular signal-regulated kinases are phosphorylated and thereby activated. However, the presence or absence of exogenous FGF-2 does not significantly affect the proliferation of hESCs. Instead, increased concentration of exogenous FGF-2 leads to reduced outgrowth of hESC colonies with time in culture. Finally, the inhibitor of FGFRs, SU5402, was used to ascertain whether FGF-2 that is released by hESCs exerts its activities via autocrine pathways. Strikingly, the resultant inhibition of FGFR suppresses activation of downstream protein kinases and causes rapid cell differentiation, suggesting an involvement of autocrine FGF signals in the maintenance of proliferating hESCs in the undifferentiated state. In conclusion from our data, we propose that this endogenous FGF signaling pathway can be implicated in self-renewal or differentiation of hESCs.

The efficient and reversible control of transgene expression is a powerful tool for the correct manipulation of embryonic stem cells in both cell therapy and transgenesis. The aim of this work was to investigate the possibilities of recently developed reverse tetracycline-controlled transactivator rtTA2s-S2. We show that the rtTA2s-S2 is useful for transient inducible expression of genes in embryonic stem cells. However, we found that it was not possible to establish mouse embryonic stem cell lines stably expressing this transactivator. Using the viral IRES sequence which couples the expression of rtTA2s-S2 and neomycin phosphotransferase, we found that embryonic stem cells expressing rtTA2s-S2 are not capable of growing in the presence of G418. Our results indicate that this transactivator is toxic to ES cells and raise the need for the development of other strategies for stable and inducible expression of genes in ES cells.

The authors present an overview on CT-guided stereotaxy performed in the last 10 years in the University Hospital Olomouc. During this period a total of 811 stereotactic brain operations were performed. Of these, 710 were done in the field of afunctional and 101 in the field of functional stereotaxy. The majority of procedures were biopsies of intracranial lesions (n = 464), evacuations of intracerebral hematomas with or without drainage and fibrinolysis (n = 147) and thalamotomies in patients with Parkinson's disease (n = 88). With the exception of the two years at the beginning, the number of yearly performed stereotaxies varied between 66-106 (mean, 86.9). Serious complications appeared after three procedures (0.37 %).

Previously, we showed that expression of myeloma-associated (proto)oncogene fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR-3) is increased in white blood cells from patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The abnormal expression was returned back to the normal levels as soon as these patients reconstituted their hematopoiesis following transplantation of allogeneic peripheral blood stem cells. The aims of this study were: (1) to define population(s) of cells overexpressing FGFR-3, and (2) to determine the expression of FGFR-3 during the clinical course of the disease. We show that the vast majority of FGFR-3 transcripts as well as FGFR-3 protein arise from CD34+ BCR-ABL+ cells. Although increased levels of FGFR-3 were found in majority of late chronic phase patients treated with interferon alpha or hydroxyurea, the expression of FGFR-3 was always lowered following treatment with BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitor STI571. Compared to unstimulated cells, high levels of FGFR-3 were also identified in CD34+ cells from granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-mobilized blood stem cell harvests from healthy donors, suggesting a potential growth factor-dependent basis for elevated expression of FGFR-3 in CML. These findings have implications for the involvement of FGFR-3 in malignant hematopoiesis and depict FGFR-3 tyrosine kinase in CD34+ leukemic cells as a possible target for tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

Enzymes of the Polo-like kinase (Plk) family are active in the pathways controlling mitosis in several species. We have cloned cDNA fragments of the porcine homologues of Plk1, Plk2, and Plk3 employing fetal fibroblasts as source. All three partial cDNAs showed high sequence homology with their mouse and human counterparts and contained the Polo box, a domain characteristic for all Polo kinases. The expression levels of Plk1 mRNA at various points of the cell cycle in synchronized porcine fetal fibroblasts were analyzed by both RT-PCR and the ribonuclease protection assay. Plk1 mRNA was barely detectable in G0 and G1, increased during S phase and peaked after the G2/M transition. A monoclonal antibody was generated against an in vitro expressed porcine Plk1-protein fragment and used to detect changes in Plk1 expression at the protein level. Plk1 protein was first detected by immunoblotting at the beginning of S phase and was highest after the G2/M transition. In summary, the Plk1 expression pattern in the pig is similar to that reported for other species. The absence of Plk1 mRNA and protein appears to be a good marker for G0/G1 and thus for the selection of donor cells for nuclear transfer based somatic cloning.

The presence of a form of cyclin A2 with an N-terminal truncation has recently been reported in various murine cell lines and tissues. The truncated cyclin A2 binds to and activates the cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2). However, CDK2 bound by the truncated cyclin A2 is located in the cytoplasm in contrast to CDK2 bound to full-length cyclin A2, which is in the nucleus. Here, we show that proliferating mouse embryonic stem cells (ES cells) contain very little truncated cyclin A2 but as the cells are induced to differentiate the amount of truncated cyclin A2 increases. The expression pattern of truncated cyclin A2 was the same in p27(Kip1) -/- differentiating ES cells as in the differentiating wild-type cells. We conclude that p27(Kip1) is not necessary for the proteolytic cleavage that gives rise to the truncated form of cyclin A2 in differentiating ES cells and that this post-translational modification is not a function of the cell density but is correlated with differentiation.

The cellular response to fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) is mediated by receptor tyrosine kinases (FGFR-1 - 4) whose patterns of expression are spatially and temporally restricted during embryogenesis. These receptors have differential ligand binding capacities and are coupled to diverse signalling pathways. In the present study, we have characterized the ability of FGFR-1-deficient mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells to bind FGF-2 and to proliferate in the absence or presence of exogenous FGF-2. Under the same conditions, we also analysed the differentiation of FGFR-1-deficient ES cells into three dimensional, post-implantation, embryonic tissues, known as embryoid bodies (EBs). We show that the targeted disruption of FGFR-1 leads to a reduced binding of FGF-2 which has no significant effect on the proliferation of undifferentiated ES cells. In addition, lack of functional FGFR-1 in differentiating EBs leads to a reduced expression of the endoderm marker gene alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). This deregulation of the AFP gene correlates with defects in the formation of the visceral endoderm, proper differentiation of the ectoderm and thus the organization of the columnar epithelium, and a block of cavitation. Although the addition of exogenous FGF-2 further reduced the expression of AFPmRNA in differentiating mutant EBs, corresponding morphological changes were not observed. Our results indicate that FGFR-1 may play a vital role in endoderm formation.

Fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFR1-4) are implicated in various cellular events, including cell growth and transformation. Here, we showed that patients suffering from chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) express high levels of FGFR3 mRNA in white blood cells (WBCs). After stem cell transplantation and reconstitution of haematopoiesis, the expression of FGFR3 decreased and was maintained at low levels that are typical of healthy individuals. However, FGFR3 expression became upregulated again in those patients that had accelerated BCR/ABL rearrangement and underwent relapse of leukaemia. Our findings suggest that, in CML, the changing levels of FGFR3 transcripts in WBCs may have prognostic significance.

Gastrulation is a critical step in vertebrate development, that depends on synergistic effects of several signalling molecules, including fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2). To follow this phenomenon in vitro we isolated rabbit inner cell masses (ICMs) at embryonic day 4 and we exposed ICM-derived cells to FGF-2. Then, we analysed the quantitative differences in rates of protein synthesis from day 3 to day 5 of culture by two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis. Here we show that both up- and down-regulation of protein synthesis took place in ICM-derived cells upon their exposure to FGF-2. The effect of FGF-2 was most pronounced at day 4 of culture, when the changes were very much in favour of a set of down-regulated proteins. To test the significance of this period of time for FGF-2-mediated regulation of protein synthesis, cells were grown without FGF-2 and then they were pulse-treated with FGF-2 at the end of day 4. When compared to the continuous culture with FGF-2, the FGF-2 pulse resulted in a quite indistinguishable pattern of up- and down-regulated proteins. Thus, the readiness of ICM-derived cells to accept and respond to the FGF-2 signals may be of limited duration.

Basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) functions as a natural inducer of mesoderm, regulator of cell differentiation and autocrine modulator of cell growth and transformation. The FGF-2 signals are transduced through receptors with intrinsic protein tyrosine kinase activity. However, receptor binding and activation is governed by extracellular matrix, cell surface or soluble proteoglycans. This paper focuses on the role of proteoglycans synthesized by embryonic cells, embryoglycans, in FGF-2 signaling via FGF receptor-1 (FGFR-1). We found that embryoglycan ectodomain Lewis X, analog of developmentally regulated embryonic cell surface epitope TEC 1, promotes oligomerization of FGF-2 in the cell free chemical crosslinking. In vitro assays show that a large molar excess of extracellular Lewis X does not inhibit binding of FGF-2 to embryonic stem (ES) cells, but prevents the mitogenic effect of FGF-2. Western blot analysis of ES cells revealed the presence of abundant 52 kDa and trace amounts of 67 and 125 kDa isoforms of FGFR-1. However, none of these isoforms undergo any detectable changes in tyrosine phosphorylation under the conditions that modulate the mitogenic effect of FGF-2. Rather, a primary substrate of all receptor tyrosine kinases, phospholipase C gamma (PLC gamma), is activated by both FGF-2 and Lewis X. The combination, FGF-2 plus Lewis X, leads to weak inhibition, when compared with the effects of FGF-2 and Lewis X, respectively. In accordance, the level of phosphorylation of non-receptor tyrosine kinase c-Src is reduced in a reversed pattern to PLC(gamma). Objectives To compare traditional plaster casts, digital models and 3D printed copies of dental plaster casts based on various criteria. To determine whether 3D printed copies obtained using open source system RepRap can replace traditional plaster casts in dental practice. To compare and contrast the qualities of two possible 3D printing options – open source system RepRap and commercially available 3D printing. Design and settings A method comparison study on 10 dental plaster casts from the Orthodontic department, Department of Stomatology, 2nd medical Faulty, Charles University Prague, Czech Republic. Material and methods Each of 10 plaster casts were scanned by inEos Blue scanner and the printed on 3D printer RepRap [10 models] and ProJet HD3000 3D printer [1 model]. Linear measurements between selected points on the dental arches of upper and lower jaws on plaster casts and its 3D copy were recorded and statistically analyzed. Results 3D printed copies have many advantages over traditional plaster casts. The precision and accuracy of the RepRap 3D printed copies of plaster casts were confirmed based on the statistical analysis. Although the commercially available 3D printing enables to print more details than the RepRap system, it is expensive and for the purpose of clinical use can be replaced by the cheaper prints obtained from RepRap printed copies. Conclusions Scanning of the traditional plaster casts to obtain a digital model offers a pragmatic approach. The scans can subsequently be used as a template to print the plaster casts as required. Using 3D printers can replace traditional plaster casts primarily due to their accuracy and price.

Comparison of the apparent capacity evaluated from the charging current on voltammograms and the element of equivalent circuit estimated from impedance spectroscopy was done using Fourier transform.
