Astrophysics - Abstract
We present FUSE observations of the extincted O9.5 star, HD 34078. The 19 first levels of H2 are detected (i.e. from J=0 to v=1, J=5) as well as HD in its two first levels. The excitation of H2 up to J=7 can be explained using a combination of Photon Dominated Region (PDR) and MHD shock models. However, understanding the large amount of H2 found in higher excitation states seems to require more energetic processes that have yet to be identified., Comment: Values of column densities in the table have been corrected

Astrophysics - Abstract
We present preliminary results from an ongoing program devoted to a study of small scale structure in the spatial distribution of molecular gas. Our work is based on multi-epoch FUSE and visible observations of HD34078. A detailed comparison of H2, CH and CH+ absorption lines is performed. No short term variations are seen (except for highly excited H2) but long-term changes in N(CH) are clearly detected when comparing our data to spectra taken about 10 years ago., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, To appear in the Proceedings of the XVII IAP Colloquium "Gaseous Matter in Galaxies and Intergalactic Space"

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
Atoms and molecules have long been thought to be versatile tracers of the cold neutral gas in the universe, from high-redshift galaxies to star forming regions and proto-planetary disks, because their internal degrees of freedom bear the signature of the physical conditions where these species reside. However, the promise that molecular emission has a strong diagnostic power of the underlying physical and chemical state is still hampered by the difficulty to combine sophisticated chemical codes with gas dynamics. It is therefore important 1) to acquire self-consistent data sets that can be used as templates for this theoretical work, and 2) to reveal the diagnostic capabilities of molecular lines accurately. The advent of sensitive wideband spectrometers in the (sub)- millimeter domain (e.g., IRAM-30m/EMIR, NOEMA, …) during the 2010s has allowed us to image a significant fraction of a Giant Molecular Cloud with enough sensitivity to detect tens of molecular lines in the 70 – 116 GHz frequency range. Machine learning techniques applied to these data start to deliver the next generation of molecular line diagnostics of mass, density, temperature, and radiation field.

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
The ionization fraction in neutral interstellar clouds is a key physical parameter controlling multiple physical and chemical processes, and varying by orders of magnitude from the UV irradiated surface of the cloud to its cosmic-ray dominated central regions. Traditional observational tracers of the ionization fraction, which mostly rely on deuteration ratios of molecules like HCO+, suffer from the fact that the deuterated molecules are only detected in a tiny fraction of a given Giant Molecular Cloud (GMC). In [1], we propose a machine learning-based, semi-automatic method to search in a large dataset of astrochemical model results for new tracers of the ionization fraction, and propose several new tracers relevant in different ranges of physical conditions.

INTERSTELLAR medium ,RADIATIVE transitions ,TEMPERATURE ,LOW temperatures ,MOLECULAR clouds - Abstract
The triatomic hydrogen ion $ \mathrm {H}_3^+ $ H 3 + is one of the most important species for the gas phase chemistry of the interstellar medium. Observations of $ \mathrm {H}_3^+ $ H 3 + are used to constrain important physical and chemical parameters of interstellar environments. However, the temperatures inferred from the two lowest rotational states of $ \mathrm {H}_3^+ $ H 3 + in diffuse lines of sight – typically the only ones observable – appear consistently lower than the temperatures derived from H $ _2 $ 2 observations in the same sightlines. All previous attempts at modelling the temperatures of $ \mathrm {H}_3^+ $ H 3 + in the diffuse interstellar medium failed to reproduce the observational results. Here we present new studies, comparing an independent master equation for H $ _3^+ $ 3 + level populations to results from the Meudon PDR code for photon dominated regions. We show that the populations of the lowest rotational states of $ \mathrm {H}_3^+ $ H 3 + are strongly affected by the formation reaction and that H $ _3^+ $ 3 + ions experience incomplete thermalisation before their destruction by free electrons. Furthermore, we find that for quantitative analysis more than two levels of H $ _3^+ $ 3 + have to be considered and that it is crucial to include radiative transitions as well as collisions with H
2 . Our models of typical diffuse interstellar sightlines show very good agreement with observational data, and thus they may finally resolve the perceived temperature difference attributed to these two fundamental species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter-and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks, and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template data sets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. These template data sets and Science-Enabling products will guide the preparation of future proposals on star-forming regions in our Galaxy and beyond and will facilitate data analysis and interpretation of forthcoming JWST observations.

- Abstract
IntroductionWhile crucial to ensuring the production of accurate and high-quality data—and to avoid erroneous conclusions—data quality control (QC) in environmental monitoring datasets is still poorly documented. MethodsWith a focus on annual inter-laboratory comparison (ILC) exercises performed in the context of the French coastal monitoring SOMLIT network, we share here a pragmatic approach to QC, which allows the calculation of systematic and random errors, measurement uncertainty, and individual performance. After an overview of the different QC actions applied to fulfill requirements for quality and competence, we report equipment, accommodation, design of the ILC exercises, and statistical methodology specially adapted to small environmental networks (<20 laboratories) and multivariate datasets. Finally, the expanded uncertainty of measurement for 20 environmental variables routinely measured by SOMLIT from discrete sampling—including Essential Ocean Variables—is provided. Results, Discussion, ConclusionThe examination of the temporal variations (2001–2021) in the repeatability, reproducibility, and trueness of the SOMLIT network over time confirms the essential role of ILC exercises as a tool for the continuous improvement of data quality in environmental monitoring datasets.

- Abstract
Consider a dynamic network and a given distributed problem. At any point in time, there might exist several solutions that are equally good with respect to the problem specification, but that are different from an algorithmic perspective, because some could be easier to update than others when the network changes. In other words, one would prefer to have a solution that is more robust to topological changes in the network; and in this direction the best scenario would be that the solution remains correct despite the dynamic of the network. In [Arnaud Casteigts et al., 2020], the authors introduced a very strong robustness criterion: they required that for any removal of edges that maintain the network connected, the solution remains valid. They focus on the maximal independent set problem, and their approach consists in characterizing the graphs in which there exists a robust solution (the existential problem), or even stronger, where any solution is robust (the universal problem). As the robustness criteria is very demanding, few graphs have a robust solution, and even fewer are such that all of their solutions are robust. In this paper, we ask the following question: Can we have robustness for a larger class of networks, if we bound the number k of edge removals allowed? To answer this question, we consider three classic problems: maximal independent set, minimal dominating set and maximal matching. For the universal problem, the answers for the three cases are surprisingly different. For minimal dominating set, the class does not depend on the number of edges removed. For maximal matching, removing only one edge defines a robust class related to perfect matchings, but for all other bounds k, the class is the same as for an arbitrary number of edge removals. Finally, for maximal independent set, there is a strict hierarchy of classes: the class for the bound k is strictly larger than the class for bound k+1. For the robustness notion of [Arnaud Casteigts et al., 2

Markov chain Monte Carlo ,[INFO.INFO-TS]Computer Science [cs]/Signal and Image Processing ,[INFO.INFO-TS] Computer Science [cs]/Signal and Image Processing ,Bayesian inference ,Inverse problem - Abstract
This work considers a radio-astronomy inverse problem of physical parameters inference from multispectral images. The forward model is a numerical simulation, and the observation model mixes different sources of noise. This results in a non-explicit non-log-concave likelihood function. We introduce a likelihood approximation with controlled error that allow the conception of a Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) method. The obtained sampler provides credibility intervals along with point estimates. We believe that the proposed approach is sufficiently generic to be applied to similar inverse problems., Ce travail considère un problème inverse en astrophysique, qui consiste à estimer un ensemble de paramètres physiques à partir d'images multispectrales.
