ObjectiveThis randomized trial experimentally manipulated social status to assess effects on acute eating behavior and 24-hour energy balance.MethodsParticipants (n = 133 Hispanics; age 15-21 years; 60.2% females) were randomized to low social status ("LOW") or high social status ("HIGH") conditions in a rigged game of Monopoly (Hasbro, Inc.). Acute energy intake in a lunchtime meal was measured by food scales. Twenty-four-hour energy balance was assessed via summation of resting metabolic rate (metabolic cart), physical activity energy expenditure (accelerometer), thermic effect of food, and subtraction of twenty-four-hour energy intake (food diary).ResultsIn the total sample, no significant differences were observed by study condition at lunchtime. LOW females consumed a greater percent of lunchtime daily energy needs (37.5%) relative to HIGH females (34.3%); however, this difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.291). In males, however, LOW consumed significantly less (36.5%) of their daily energy needs relative to HIGH males (45.8%; P = 0.001). For 24-hour energy balance, sex differences were nearly significant (P = 0.057; LOW females: surplus +200 kcal; HIGH males: surplus +445 kcal). Food-insecure individuals consumed a nearly significant greater lunchtime percent daily energy than those with food security (40.7% vs. 36.3%; P = 0.0797).ConclusionsThe data demonstrate differential acute and 24-hour eating behavior responses between Hispanic male and female adolescents in experimentally manipulated conditions of low social status.

Halide perovskites are essential materials for hard radiation detectors at ambient temperature. To improve detector performance, charge transport must be investigated and optimized. Using photoluminescence (PL) and thermally stimulated current (TSC) spectroscopies, we investigate photogenerated charge carriers in Bridgman-grown CsPbBr3 single crystals to understand the nature of charge transport. PL spectroscopy of these halide perovskites revealed the presence of strong emission bands at the band edge, which were attributed to free or bound excitons. It is shown that a wide broadening of the excitonic linewidth in these halide perovskites arises from strong exciton–phonon coupling, which is substantially dominated by longitudinal optical phonons via Fröhlich interaction. An additional contribution due to the presence of ionized impurities was also observed. Crystals with a detectable sensitivity to high-energy gamma radiation are characterized by a higher intensity and a narrower linewidth of the principal PL peak at 2.326 eV. Defect states beyond 2.214 eV have a negative impact on detector sensitivity to high-energy gamma radiation. TSC spectroscopy reveals an array of trap levels spanning 0.15–0.70 eV, attributed to intrinsic point defects and multiple extrinsic defects involving dopants or impurities. Defects identified included Cs and Br vacancies, as well as Pb interstitials with concentrations in the 1011–1016 cm−3 range. Understanding how the synthesis process impacts the types and concentrations of the defects present is currently under investigation. Elimination or suppression of the defect/trap states should result in halide perovskite materials with longer carrier diffusion lengths and improved detector characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The biological reduction of N2 to ammonia requires the ATP-dependent, sequential delivery of electrons from the Fe protein to the MoFe protein of nitrogenase. It has been demonstrated that CdS nanocrystals can replace the Fe protein to deliver photoexcited electrons to the MoFe protein. Herein, light-activated electron delivery within the CdS:MoFe protein complex was achieved in the frozen state, revealing that all the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) active E-state intermediates in the catalytic cycle can be trapped and characterized by EPR spectroscopy. Prior to illumination, the CdS:MoFe protein complex EPR spectrum was composed of a S = 3/2 rhombic signal (g = 4.33, 3.63, and 2.01) consistent with the FeMo-cofactor in the resting state, E0. Illumination for sequential 1-h periods at 233 K under 1 atm of N2 led to a cumulative attenuation of E0 by 75%. This coincided with the appearance of S = 3/2 and S = 1/2 signals assigned to two-electron (E2) and four-electron (E4) reduced states of the FeMo-cofactor, together with additional S = 1/2 signals consistent with the formation of E6 and E8 states. Simulations of EPR spectra allowed quantification of the different E-state populations, along with mapping of these populations onto the Lowe–Thorneley kinetic scheme. The outcome of this work demonstrates that the photochemical delivery of electrons to the MoFe protein can be used to populate all of the EPR active E-state intermediates of the nitrogenase MoFe protein cycle.
