132. Predicting procrastination with academic performance: Towards the anticipation of a higher education problem.

Abstract

Purpose: With the purpose of predicting the problem of procrastination, we study how age, sex, type of studies and grade for admission to higher education influence the procrastination behavior of students. Design/methodology: In a sample of 359 university students, the Pure Procrastination scale was applied, as well as data on sex, age, grade previous to join the university, grade completed and year of study (first to fourth). To identify underlying variables or factors that explain the configuration of correlations in the items of the scale used, an exploratory factor analysis was carried out (principal component analysis with Varimax normalization). Next, a multiple linear regression analysis was performed with the variables sex, age, and admission grade as independent variables and academic procrastination as the dependent variable. Findings: It has been possible to identify the variables that influence the procrastinating behavior of university students. From the identification of which students will possibly present procrastinating behaviors, the people responsible for university education will be able to implement intervention programs to deal with procrastination. Research limitations/implications: The sample is not representative of the universe of university students, although the results obtained are relevant enough to replicate the study in other university contexts. Our data could have included more instruments for collecting information, which in future studies would entail incorporating scales related to the perception of time management, motivation or self-regulation. Practical implications: Distinguishing, among university students, those who may present more procrastination tendencies will guide those responsible for the educational process of said students with respect to measures to alleviate the negative effects of procrastination through psycho-socio-educational intervention programs. Social implications: The knowledge derived from this work has practical implications for the students themselves who, in the case of being identified as a potential procrastinator, may benefit from a psychosocio-educational intervention that will help them manage their time and reduce the discomfort derived from the procrastination. Originality/value: On the previous corpus of existing scientific knowledge, this work provides knowledge that allows optimizing, both at a public and private level, the academic, economic and social resources of university institutions in which procrastination can affect the preparation and the student performance. Abstract

This systematic review was carried out to identify and evaluate psychosocial intervention strategies and procedures addressed to child soldiers. Following an exploration of peer-reviewed articles published between 2004 and 2018 in the PILOTS, Psycnet, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, 28 of them were finally selected. The predominant theme was post-traumatic stress disorder. The intervention techniques used to deal with this and other problems consisted of established therapies (i.e. interpersonal psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy), creative-expressive activities (such as dance, music and drama), and other activities promoting training and social interaction (skills training for leadership, self-regulation and reintegration). The cultural adaptation of the techniques and instruments used for intervention was limited to the translation of the instruments – but without verifying their comprehensibility in the majority of cases, which constitutes a problem when assessing the impact of the interventions carried out in the target population. Given that in most cases the results obtained from the interventions present limitations regarding their explanatory potential and generalisation, this review highlights aspects that can inform and improve psychosocial interventions and research geared towards the recovery of the collective of child soldiers. Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the impact of HLA‐DPB1 allelic and molecular mismatches on the occurrence of acute rejection (AR) and low 5‐year graft function (5Y‐GF) in first kidney transplant (KT) recipients. This is a single center retrospective study of 130 deceased donor KT recipients transplanted between 2014 and 2016. HLA‐DPB1 allelic MM and the following molecular MM (mMM) were analyzed: expression MM with the high expression G allele in the donor; T cell epitope MM (TCE MM); epitope MM (EMM), considering all six hypervariable regions (EMM‐ABCDEF HVR), or only ABEF regions (EMM‐ABEF HVR); eplet MM (EpMM); antibody‐verified eplet MM (AbVer EpMM); and solvent accessible amino acid MM (SAMM). There was no association of allelic MM with AR or 5Y‐GF. The variables independently associated (Cox regression analyses) with AR were high donor final creatinine, nonpermissive TCE MM, ABCDEF EMM load ≥6, EpMM load ≥6; SAMM load ≥5, and AbVer EpMM load ≥3. No association between any HLA‐DPB1 mMM and 5Y‐GF was observed when all 130 transplant recipients were considered. However, when transplants from expanded criteria donors were excluded, independent associations were detected (logistic regression analyses) with AbVerEpMM load ≥2, SAMM load ≥7, cerebro‐vascular death, donor age, and AR. To our knowledge, this is the first study that shows that some HLA‐DPB1 mMM are associated with AR and low 5Y‐GF in a population of exclusively first kidney transplant recipients. Abstract

Background: the predictive ability of severity scores for mortality in patients admitted to intensive care units is not well-known among kidney transplanted (KT) patients, especially those diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the predictive ability of severity scores for mortality in KT recipients. Methods: 51 KT recipients with COVID-19 diagnosis were enrolled. The performance of the SOFA, SAPS 3, and APACHE IV tools in predicting mortality after COVID-19 was compared by the area under the ROC curve (AUC-ROC) and univariate Cox regression analysis was performed. Results: The 90-day cumulative incidence of death was 63.4%. Only APACHE IV score differed between survivors and nonsurvivors: 91.2±18.3 vs. 106.5±26.3, P = 0.03. The AUC- ROC of APACHE IV for predicting death was 0.706 (P = 0.04) and 0.656 (P = 0.06) at 7 and 90 days, respectively. Receiving a kidney from a deceased donor (HR = 3.16; P = 0.03), troponin levels at admission (HR for each ng/mL = 1.001; P = 0.03), APACHE IV score (HR for each 1 point = 1.02; P = 0.01), mechanical ventilation (MV) requirement (HR = 3.04; P = 0.002) and vasopressor use on the first day after ICU admission (HR = 3.85; P < 0.001) were associated with the 90-day mortality in the univariate analysis. Conclusion: KT recipients had high mortality, which was associated with type of donor, troponin levels, early use of vasopressors, and MV requirement. The other traditional severity scores investigated could not predict mortality. RESUMO Introdução: a capacidade preditiva dos escores de gravidade para mortalidade em pacientes admitidos em unidades de terapia intensiva não é bem conhecida entre pacientes transplantados renais (TR), especialmente aqueles diagnosticados com doença coronavírus 2019 (COVID-19). Este estudo avaliou a capacidade preditiva dos escores de gravidade para mortalidade em receptores de TR. Métodos: Foram inscritos 51 receptores de TR diagnosticados com COVID-19. O desempenho das ferramentas SOFA, SAPS 3, APACHE IV em predizer mortalidade após COVID-19 foi comparado pela área sob a curva ROC (AUC-ROC) e realizou-se análise de regressão univariada de Cox. Resultados: A incidência cumulativa de óbito em 90 dias foi 63,4%. Somente APACHE IV diferiu entre sobreviventes e não-sobreviventes: 91,2±18,3 vs. 106,5±26,3; P = 0,03. A AUC-ROC do APACHE IV para predizer óbito foi 0,706 (P = 0,04) e 0,656 (P = 0,06) aos 7 e 90 dias, respectivamente. Receber rim de doador falecido (HR = 3,16; P = 0,03), níveis de troponina na admissão (HR para cada ng/mL = 1,001; P = 0,03), escore APACHE IV (HR para cada 1 ponto = 1,02; P = 0,01), necessidade de ventilação mecânica (VM) (HR = 3,04; P = 0,002), uso de vasopressor no primeiro dia após admissão na UTI (HR = 3,85; P < 0,001) foram associados à mortalidade em 90 dias na análise univariada. Conclusão: Receptores de TR apresentaram alta mortalidade, associada ao tipo de doador, níveis de troponina, uso precoce de vasopressores e necessidade de VM. Os outros escores tradicionais de gravidade investigados não puderam predizer mortalidade.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-02-01 This analysis, using data from the Brazilian kidney transplant (KT) COVID-19 study, seeks to develop a prediction score to assist in COVID-19 risk stratification in KT recipients. In this study, 1379 patients (35 sites) were enrolled, and a machine learning approach was used to fit models in a derivation cohort. A reduced Elastic Net model was selected, and the accuracy to predict the 28-day fatality after the COVID-19 diagnosis, assessed by the area under the ROC curve (AUC-ROC), was confirmed in a validation cohort. The better calibration values were used to build the applicable ImAgeS score. The 28-day fatality rate was 17% (n = 235), which was associated with increasing age, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, higher body mass index, dyspnea, and use of mycophenolate acid or azathioprine. Higher kidney graft function, longer time of symptoms until COVID-19 diagnosis, presence of anosmia or coryza, and use of mTOR inhibitor were associated with reduced risk of death. The coefficients of the best model were used to build the predictive score, which achieved an AUC-ROC of 0.767 (95% CI 0.698–0.834) in the validation cohort. In conclusion, the easily applicable predictive model could assist health care practitioners in identifying non-hospitalized kidney transplant patients that may require more intensive monitoring. Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a rapid-spread infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which can culminate in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone (RAAS) and kallikrein-kinin (KKS) systems imbalance, and in serious consequences for infected patients. This scoping review of published research exploring the RAAS and KKS was undertaken in order to trace the history of the discovery of both systems and their multiple interactions, discuss some aspects of the viral-cell interaction, including inflammation and the system imbalance triggered by SARS-CoV-2 infection, and their consequent disorders. Furthermore, we correlate the effects of continued use of the RAAS blockers in chronic diseases therapies with the virulence and physiopathology of COVID-19. We also approach the RAAS and KKS-related proposed potential therapies for treatment of COVID-19. In this way, we reinforce the importance of exploring both systems and the application of their components or their blockers in the treatment of coronavirus disease.
