Abstract

3-Chloro-1, 2-propanediol (3-MCPD) is a food-borne toxic substance well-known for more than 40 years that is mainly associated with nephrotoxicity. A better understanding of 3-MCPD nephrotoxicity is required to devise efficacious strategies to counteract its toxicity. In the present work, the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress along with its underlying regulatory mechanism in 3-MCPD-mediated renal cytotoxicity was investigated in vivo and in vitro. Our data indicated that 3-MCPD-stimulated ER stress response evidenced by sustained activation of PERK-ATF4-p-CHOP and IRE1 branches in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats and human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells. Moreover, ER stress-associated specific apoptotic initiator, caspase 12, was over-expressed. Blocking ER stress with its antagonist, 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA), improved the morphology and function of kidney effectively. 4-PBA also increased cell viability, relieved mitochondrial vacuolation, and inhibited cell apoptosis through regulating caspase-dependent intrinsic apoptosis pathways. Furthermore, the enhanced expressions of two mitochondrial fission proteins, DRP1/p-DRP1 and FIS1, and the relocation of DRP1 on mitochondria subjected to 3-MPCD were reversed by 4-PBA, while the expression of the fusion protein, MFN2, was restored. Moreover, cellular Ca2+ overload, the over-expression of CaMKK2, and the loss of mitochondria-associated membranes (MAM) were also relieved after 4-PBA co-treatment. Collectively, our data emphasized that ER stress plays critical role in 3-MCPD-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction and subsequent apoptosis as well as blockage of ER stress ameliorated kidney injury through improving mitochondrial fission/fusion and Ca2+ homeostasis. These findings provide a novel insight into the regulatory role of ER stress in 3-MCPD-associated nephropathy and a potential therapeutic strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers, with their direct band gaps, have attracted wide attention from the fields of photonics and optoelectronics. However, monolayer semiconducting TMDs generally suffer from low excitation absorption and emission efficiency, limiting their further applications. Here a flip‐over plasmonic structure comprised of silver nano‐disk arrays supporting a WS2 monolayer sandwiched by hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) layers is demonstrated. The flip‐over configuration optimizes the optical process with a free excitation/emission path from the top and a strong plasmonic interaction from the bottom. As a result, the photoluminescence from the TMD monolayers can be greatly enhanced more than tenfold by optimizing the metasurface, which can be further improved nearly tenfold by optimizing the thickness of bottom h‐BN. This study shows the advantages of using the flip‐over structure, where the plasmonic interaction between the metasurface and TMDs can be tuned by introducing optimized plasmonic arrays and h‐BN layers with suitable thickness. Abstract

Mg doping and graphite coating are applied to the LCO materials at the same time, thereby improving the structural stability of the LCO and the electrode conductivity at the same time. cLCO-0.02Mg displays the best cycle performance with a high capacity of 146.2 mAh/g after 60 cycles, corresponding to the 79% capacity retention of the initial discharge capacity. And cLCO-0.02Mg displays the best rate performance among the three samples with a high capacity of 41.1 mAh/g at 5 C. Mg doping helps to improve the structure stability, resulting in improving the cycle stability. Graphite coating enhances the electronic conductivity among the LCO particles, indicating a lower internal resistance, thereby resulting in the cycling performance improved.

Abstract

In this study, we designed and fabricated a poling-free piezoelectric nanogenerator using bio-based polymer and filler, a poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA)/vitamin B2 (VB2) composite film. The addition of VB2 to PLLA led to improved crystallinity and enhanced the molecular orientation of PLLA, resulting in a significantly enhanced output performance of the PLLA/VB2 nanogenerator. The proposed nanogenerator provides a maximum power density of 75.68 mW cm−3, which is approximately 28.7 times higher than that of pure PLLA nanogenerator. Moreover, the PLLA/VB2 nanogenerator exhibits good electrical responses under both mechanical and acoustic stimulations. The collected mechanical energy from the motion of human joints can power up several LEDs. The PLLA/VB2 nanogenerator can sensitively detect sound frequency from 1 to 27 kHz. Thus, it has great application potential in ambient mechanical and acoustic energy harvesting, wearable devices, and human–machine controlling systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

δ-Na2Si2O5, a potential builder in detergents, was prepared from rice husk ash by a simple sintering at 720 °C for 120 min. The sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetry (TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and EDTA titration. The XRD pattern confirmed the crystallization of δ-Na2Si2O5 obtained at 720 °C. The Raman shift at 552 cm−1 and 1052 cm−1 indicated the presence of a layered silicate tetrahedron structure in the sample. The loss of weight when the sample was heated from 120 °C to 516 °C in the TG curve was close to the theoretical weight loss calculated from the reaction formula and a broad exothermic peak at ∼715 °C in the DTA curve demonstrated a phase transformation, consistent with previous reports. The SEM and TEM images indicated the typical structure of δ-Na2Si2O5 crystallization.The sample exhibited an excellent blinding capacity to Ca2+ and Mg2+; the optimal binding capacities were found to be 396 mg/g and 435 mg/g, respectively.

Abstract

A magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @ silica–xanthan gum composite was easily fabricated as a hybrid adsorbent for the removal and recovery of aqueous Pb 2+ heavy metal. The natural polymer xanthan gum (XG) was fixed on the surface of the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 microspheres through a sol–gel process. The condensation of XG molecule provided active sites for the selective adsorption of Pb 2+ ions from the aqueous solution, and because the composite is magnetically switchable, the process of solid–liquid separation was convenient. Scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, thermogravimetry, and BET surface area determination were utilized for the characterization of the composites. The factors affecting Pb 2+ adsorption in a batch mode were studied including the contact time (30–150 min), the pH of the media (2–10), the adsorbent dosage (0.01–0.2 g/20 mL), and the temperature (303–320 K). The Pb 2+ adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the maximum Pb 2+ sorption capacity was 21.32 mg g −1 at 293 K, pH = 6, according to the Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters, including the equilibrium constant ( K 0 = 9.848), the standard free energy change (Δ G 0 = −5.774 kJ mol −1 ), the standard enthalpy change (Δ H 0 = 6.133 kJ mol −1 ), and the standard entropy change (Δ S 0 = 39.21 J mol −1 K −1 ) were discussed. The targeted Pb 2+ could be recovered efficiently using 0.05 mol L −1 HCl. Finally, the Fe 3 O 4 @ silica–XG composites were attmepted for removal of Pb 2+ from battery industry wastewater.

Abstract

An organic–inorganic bio-hybrid bead composite was fabricated through a sol–gel reaction by trapping and condensing amorphous silica into the network structures of calcium ion cross-linked alginate (CA)–xanthan gum (XG) gel beads. The reinforced silica/CA–XG composite was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and surface area measurement. Pb(II) adsorption by the composites was investigated in a batch mode by changing the relevant parameters which included solid/liquid ratio, contact time, pH, temperature, effect of co-existing metal ions and particle size. The analysis of the equilibrium data at 293 K was more appropriate for the Langmuir isotherm model, with maximum adsorption capacity standing at 18.9 mg Pb g−1. It evidenced that Pb(II) adsorption was based on chemical binding process, along with intra-particle diffusion contribution. Experiments carried out at 293 and 313 K enabled the evaluation of the thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process, namely ΔG0 (−5 kJ mol−1), ΔH0 (7.20 kJ mol−1) and ΔS0 (18.0 J mol−1 K−1); it was revealed as a spontaneous and endothermic process. 0.5 mol L−1 HCl was recommended for composite regeneration and Pb(II) recovery. Fixed bed experiment was attempted for treatment of Pb(II)-bearing battery industrial wastewater with an efficient level of reversible performance through an extended period of time. Overall, the proposed silica/CA–XG composite would be a very promising adsorbent for lead removal and recovery from aqueous solutions, with remarkable advantages in terms of biocompatibility, recyclability, ease of operation and low cost.

Abstract

Layered metal monochalcogenides have attracted significant interest in the 2D family since they show different unique properties from their bulk counterparts. The comprehensive synthesis, characterization, and optoelectrical applications of 2D‐layered tin monosulfide (SnS) grown by pulsed laser deposition are reported. Few‐layer SnS‐based field‐effect transistors (FETs) and photodetectors are fabricated on Si/SiO2 substrates. The premium 2D SnS FETs yield an on/off ratio of 3.41 × 106, a subthreshold swing of 180 mV dec−1, and a field effect mobility (µFE) of 1.48 cm2 V−1 s−1 in a 14‐monolayer SnS device. The layered SnS photodetectors show a broad photoresponse from ultraviolet to near‐infrared (365–820 nm). In addition, the SnS phototransistors present an improved detectivity of 9.78 × 1010 cm2 Hz1/2 W−1 and rapid response constants of 60 ms for grow‐time constant τg and 10 ms for decay‐time constant τd under extremely weak 365 nm illumination. This study sheds light on layer‐dependent optoelectronic properties of 2D SnS that promise to be important in next‐generation 2D optoelectronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

134. Characterization of Oxacillin-Susceptible mecA-Positive Staphylococcus aureusfrom Food Poisoning Outbreaks and Retail Foods in China

Abstract

In this study, we explored the prevalence of oxacillin-susceptible mecA-positive Staphylococcus aureus(OS-MRSA) in staphylococcal food poisoning outbreak isolates and foodborne isolates, and then investigated their molecular characteristics, classical staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs), and drug resistance. Eight (2.9%) of 275 isolates from food poisoning outbreaks and 7 (3.8%) of 184 isolates from retail foods were identified as OS-MRSA isolates. Among the 15 OS-MRSA isolates, the most frequently detected toxin genes were hld(100%), hla(93.3%), pvl(80.0%), and hlb(46.7%) followed by segand seq(33.3%, each), hlg(26.7%), seband hlgv(20.0%, each), sec, seh, sel, sep, and tst(13.3%, each), and sei, sem, sen, and seo(6.7%, each). None of isolates carried other tested virulence genes. The most frequently detected classical SEs were SEB and SEC (26.7%, each), followed by SEA and SEE (20.0%, each), and SED (6.7%). Resistance was most frequently observed in ampicillin, penicillin, and cefoxitin (100%, each), followed by trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (93.3%), erythromycin (73.3%), amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (46.7%), tetracyclines (26.7%), and ciprofloxacin (6.7%). All isolates were susceptible to other tested antibiotics. A dominant molecular type belonged to ST398-IVa-t034 (26.7%), followed by ST59-IVa-t437 (20.0%), ST88-III-t14340 and ST1-IVa-t114 (13.3%, each), and ST5-II-t002, ST630-t4549, ST5-II, and ST4495-t10738 (6.7%, each). Our findings indicated that OS-MRSA strains had a low prevalence rate among outbreak strains and foodborne strains, which frequently harbored SCCmec IVa, and carried a variety of toxin genes, and also expressed numerous classical SEs. In addition, all OS-MRSA isolates were susceptible to the majority of antibacterial agents except β-lactam. Our study is the first to report that OS-MRSA isolates are associated with food poisoning outbreaks worldwide.

Abstract

This paper describes a protection circuit based on the STM32F103 processor used for a power lithium battery pack. The protection circuits from overcharge voltage and current and short circuiting of the battery pack are built into the system and include data collection, an equilibrium module, and switching protection. The control strategy regarding battery temperature and voltage equalization between single cell batteries is discussed.

143. Delphinidin suppresses breast carcinogenesis through the HOTAIR/microRNA‐34a axis.

Abstract

Delphinidin, one of the main anthocyanidins, has potent anti‐cancer properties. In this study, we investigated the effect of delphinidin on 1‐methyl‐1‐nitrosourea (MNU)‐induced breast carcinogenesis on rats and the mechanism of delphinidin via negative regulation of the HOTAIR/microRNA‐34a axis. We found administration of delphinidin could effectively suppress MNU‐induced mammal breast carcinogenesis. Delphinidin downregulated the level of HOTAIR and upregulated miR‐34a in breast carcinogenesis. Western blot analysis confirmed that delphinidin treatment can significantly decrease the expression of β‐catenin, glycogen synthase kinase‐3β (Gsk3β), c‐Myc, cyclin‐D1, and matrix metalloproteinase‐7(MMP‐7) expression in breast cancer cells, and inhibition of miR‐34a significantly reduced the effect of delphinidin on c‐Myc, cyclin‐D1, and MMP‐7. HOTAIR overexpression also blocked the effect of delphinidin on miR‐34a and the Wnt/β‐catenin signaling pathway in MDA‐MB‐231 cells. RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay results showed that delphinidin upregulated miR‐34a by inhibiting HOTAIR, coupled with enhancement of the zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) and histone H3 Lys27 trimethylation (H3K27me3). This study indicated that delphinidin may potentially suppress breast carcinogenesis and exert its anti‐cancer effect through the HOTAIR/miR‐34a axis. Abstract

Owing to the advantages of high energy density, low cost, abundant sulfur reserves and environmentally friendly nature, lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) were considered as one of the potential candidates of energy storage devices for the next generation. However, the significant challenges in this area stem from the sluggish reaction kinetics of the insoluble Li2S product and the capacity degradation triggered by the severe shuttle effect of polysulfides. It has been firmly established through numerous studies that modifying separators is an effective approach to enhance the properties of LSBs by facilitating the catalytic kinetic conversion and chemical adsorption of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). In this work, we report a straightforward method for fabrication of the phosphorus doped porous CeO2(P-CeO2) as separator modifier to accelerate the catalytic kinetic conversion of polysulfides and effectively inhibit the shuttle effect in LSBs. Through coin batteries tests, P-CeO2modified PP separator (P-CeO2//PP) exhibits remarkable electrochemical performance. It demonstrates a high initial capacity of 1180 mAh/g at 0.5 C, surpassing the performance of the bare CeO2//PP separator. Furthermore, the P-CeO2//PP separator demonstrates enhanced cycling stability, with a low-capacity fading rate of only 0.048% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 2 C. In compared with bare CeO2//PP, P-CeO2//PP exhibits high redox peak current, enhanced adsorption property of Li2S6and early Li2S precipitation. These results highlight the superior performance of the P-CeO2//PP separator compared to the bare CeO2//PP separator. Hence, this research presents a successful strategy for the modification of LIBs separator with improved electrochemical performance and cycle stability.
