Esta lista é baseada numa revisão da literatura combinada com o estudo de espécimes depositados nas colecções de alguns museus, incluindo a colecção de peixes do Departamento de Oceanografia e Pescas da Universidade dos Açores (Horta). Informações pessoais e conhecimentos adquiridos ao longo dos anos, são também incorporados. A área geográfica considerada é a da Zona Económica Exclusiva dos Açores. A lista está organizada em Classes, Ordens e Famílias, ordenadas segundo Nelson (1994). Os nomes científicos dos géneros e das espécies são, na sua maioria, adoptados da obra Fishes of the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (FNAM) (Whitehead et al. 1989), e estão organizados por ordem alfabética dos géneros e espécies. Os números Clofnam (vd. Hureau & Monod 1979) são referidos na ficha das espécies, assim como a indicação se a espécie não é citada para os Açores no FNAM. São fornecidas as designações vernaculares das espécies nos Açores. Os sinónimos e as ortografias e identificações incorrectas, referidos na literatura para os Açores são também incluídos nas fichas das espécies. Das 460 espécies referidas, pertencentes a 142 famílias, 12 são citadas pela primeira vez para os Açores. As informações referentes a outras 23 espécies, referidas pela primeira vez para os Açores no Livro Vermelho dos Vertebrados de Portugal (ICN 1993), são elucidadas. Cinquenta e quatro espécies de ocorrência excepcional e/ou ambígua são incluídas num primeiro apêndice. Num segundo apêndice são incluídas as restantes correções à lista de peixes publicada em ICN (1993). O artigo termina com uma síntese de conclusões e uma bibliografia anotada e classificada sobre os peixes marinhos dos Açores. A maioria destas referências estão disponíveis através da Biblioteca do Departamento de Oceanografia e Pescas da Universidade dos Açores. As espécies demersais dos Açores têm sido objecto de diversos estudos desde 1982 com vista à avaliação deste recurso. Este trabalho consistiu no estudo do crescimento de uma destas espécies, o Pagrus pagrus, através da observação dos otólitos e pela análise de frequências de comprimento. Para a estimação dos parâmetros da curva de crescimento de von Bertalanffy, em comprimento, foram utilizados três métodos, dois directos e um indirecto. A contagem dos anéis dos otólitos efectuou-se por dois processos diferentes: observação dos otólitos inteiros e observação de secções transversais finas. Os resultados de ambos os procedimentos foram coincidentes entre si. Os dois métodos directos usados para estimação dos parâmetros de crescimento a partir das estruturas duras (otólitos): cálculo directo e rectrócalculo, deram resultados semelhantes, Lt=103.0(1-e0.061(t+1.7)), e Lt=104.6(1-e-0.066(t+0.7)), respectivamente. A curva de crescimento, Lt = 102.7(1- e0.067(t+1.0)), semelhante às anteriores, foi obtida pelo método de estimação indirecta dos parâmetros de crescimento pela análise das frequências de comprimento através do programa MULTIFAN. Em todas as funções obtidas, o valor de crescimento assimptótico foi muito elevado quando comparado com o comprimento máximo observado (Lmax obs = 71 cm), e com outros estudos semelhantes. Este facto poderá ter resultado de uma amostragem incompleta nas classes etárias mais velhas. Pelos resultados obtidos pode-se afirmar que esta espécie apresenta um crescimento mais lento, e um ciclo de vida mais curto, comparativamente ao verificado no costa leste da América do Norte. ABSTRACT: Demersal fish species from the Azores have been studied since 1982 with the aim of stock assessment. This work presents the results from a study concerning the growth of Pagrus pagrus, through otolith observation and by length frequency analysis. For the estimation of the parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function, in length, three methods were used, two direct and one indirect. The otolith rings were directly counted by two procedures: first by reading the whole structure, and secondly by observing a thin transverse section of the otolith. Results from the two procedures coincided with each other. The two direct methods used for estimation of the growth parameters from the hard structures (otoliths): direct calculation and backcalculation gave similar results, Lt=103.0(1-e0.061(t+1.7)), and Lt=104.6(1-e-0.066(t+0.7)), respectively. The growth curve, Lt = 102.7(1- e0.067(t+1.0)), similar to the previous ones, was obtained in the method of indirect estimation of growth parameters by length frequency analysis through MULTIFAN software. The asymptotic lengths obtained in the previous equations were very large when compared with the maximum observed length (Lmax obs = 71 cm), and with similar studies. This may have resulted from incomplete sampling of the older age classes. The results show that this species has a slower growth and a shorter life span in Azorean waters than that off the east coast of North America.

São registadas pela primeira vez para os Açores cinco espécies de peixes: Cookeolus japonicus, Parophidion vassali, Scorpaenodes arenai, Canthigaster rostrata e Antennarius senegalensis. O scorpaenídeo Scorpaenodes arenai Torchio, 1962, anteriormente conhecido apenas do Estreito de Messina, é redescrito com base em seis exemplares dos Açores. A ocorrência em águas açoreanas de Zenopsis conchifer, Elagatis bipinnulata, Lepidocybium flavobrunneum, Acanthocybium solandri, Stephanolepis hispidus e Chaunax pictus é confirmada. ABSTRACT: Five new records of fishes from the Azores are reported: Cookeolus japonicus, Parophidion vassali, Scorpaenodes arenai. Canthigaster rostrata, and Antennarius senegalensis. The scorpaenid fish Scorpaenodes arenai Torchio, 1962, previously known only from the Strait of Messina, is redescribed, based on examination of 6 specimens from the Azores and one of the paratypes. The occurrence of Zenopsis conchifer, Elagatis bipinnulata. Lepidocybium flavobrunneum, Acanthocybium solandri, Stephanolepis hispidus, and Chaunax pictus in Azorian waters is confirmed.

Stomach contents of seven cartilaginous fish species were analysed with the aim to detect trophic groups. Sampling was effectuated between October/85 and July/87 off the coast of Ubatuba (São Paulo, Brazil) in waters up 50 m depth. The relative importance of different components of the diet was expressed as a percentage frequency of occurrence and percentage number. The seven species were grouped in: fish feeders - Squalus cubensis; benthonic crustacean and fish feeders - Raja castelnaui, Raja cyclophora, Raja agassizi; benthonic invertebrate feeders - Rhinobatos horkelii, Zapteryx brevirostris, Psammobatis glansdissimilis. Com o objetivo de detectar grupos tróficos, foram analisadas amostras de conteúdos estomacais de sete espécies de peixes cartilaginosos. Os exemplares foram coletados no período de Outubro/85 a Julho/87 na plataforma interna de Ubatuba, SP, Brasil (da costa, até a isóbata de 50 m). A importância dos itens alimentares foi analisada através da freqüência numérica (FN) e da freqüência de ocorrência (FO). As espécies foram agrupadas em três grupos distintos: Piscívoros: Squalus cubensis; comedores de peixes e crustáceos bentônicos: Raja castelnaui, Raja cyclophora, Raja agassizi; comedores de invertebrados bentônicos: Psammobatis glansdissimilis, Rhinobatos horkelii, Zapteryx brevirostris.

During the sea-bob shrimp fishery, a large quantity of miscellaneous fishes are caught, of which the most part was discarded in the sea. In this paper, quantitative aspects of this bycatch products are analized, e.g. diversity of ichthyofauna, catch per unit effort and proportions of the sea-bob shrimp versus acompanying fish fauna. Sampling has been made from Sept. 1981 to Sept. 1983 at Santos bay, one of the most important fishing area from Brazil. A total of 5583 fishes were collected during 28 fishery operations with otter-trawl.

Dinosoma clupeola sp. n. is described from Harengula clupeola, and resembles D. hawaiiense Yamaguti, 1970, from which it differs in the entire, elongate-saccular seminal vesicle, tegument weakly plicated, smaller size of body and internal organs, and slightly larger and narrower eggs. Pseudoacanthostomum floridensis Nahhas & Short, 1965 is referred to Netuma barba, which represents a new host record.Dinosoma clupeola sp. n. é descrito de Harengula clupeola, e assemelha-se a D. hawaiiense Yamaguti, 1970, da qual difere pela vesícula seminal que é inteira, sacular alongada, e não signóide e torcida em duas ou três porções, pelo tegumento que é fracamente plicado, e não liso, pelo meneor tamanho do corpo e dos órgãos internos e pelos ovos que são ligeiramente maiores e mais estreitos. Pseudoacanthostomum floridensis Nahhas & Shsort, 1965 é referido em um novo hospedeiro: Netuma barba.

Estudou-se o cariótipo de Menticirrhus americanus (Linnaeus, 1758), peixes teleósteos da família Sciaenidae, coletados na região estuarino-lagunar de Cananéia, SP, Brasil. Foram realizadas preparações de cromossomos mitóticos e meióticos e ensaios de bandeamentos C e G. O número diplóide encontrado para a espécie foi de 2n = 48 cromossomos, tipo t cujos tamanhos variaram entre 3,18 µm e 1,47 µm, em média, do maior para o menor par. O primeiro par de homólogos apresenta uma constricção secundária no terço superior dos cromossomos. O número haplóide encontrado foi n = 24. O conteúdo diplóide de DNA foi de 1,57 ± 0,03 picogramas por célula. Nao se obteve padrão nítido de bandas G, mas a aplicação da técnica facilitou a identificação de alguns pares adjacentes e a visualização da constricção secundária. Bandas C localizam-se, principalmente, nas regiões pericentrométricas. The chromosomes of M. americanus was studied. The diploid number is 48 acrocentric chromosomes and the haploid number is 24. The diploid DNA content of blood cell nucleus was measured. C- and G- banding techniques were tried.

Na execução de um programa de levantamento das faunas demersal e epibentônica da plataforma do litoral norte do Estado de São Paulo, foram tomadas, em um período de dois anos, 28 amostras da fauna de fundo, utilizando-se redes tipo ottertrawl abrangendo a área compreendida entre as ilhas Anchieta, Vitória e das Couves. A despeito do pequeno tamanho das redes - 30 pés na tralha de bóia -, os resultados, quanto a número e diversidade dos peixes encontrados na área, pareceram ser muito significativos e justificar a comunicação atual. Um total de 97 espécies de peixes, tanto ósseos quanto cartilaginosos, foi obtido em 28 capturas controladas, durante os anos de 1978 e 1979, A família melhor representada foi, como previsto, a dos Sciaenidae; porém, representantes de Rajidae, Bothidae e Cynoglossidae foram também abundantes. Lophius gastrophysus e Merluccius hubbsii, ocorreram apenas em profundidades acima de 30 m, o que concorda com sua distribuição conhecida na costa do extremo sul do país, Uma lista sistemática das espécies e seus nomes populares, quando disponíveis, é dada. This publication is part of a series that will constitute an Atlas of Teleostei Otoliths of the Southeastern-Southern Brazilian region. In this article, we present the results of sagittae's morphologic and morphometric analyses from fishes remaining to the orders: Albuliformes (one species), Anguiliformes (four), Osmeriformes (one), Stomiiformes (one), Aulopiformes (five), Myctophiformes (nine), Ophidiiformes (three), Polimixiiformes (one), Batrachoidiformes (one) and Lophiformes (three). Features, measurements and indices were analyzed according to methodology used in anterior series. Whenever possible three otoliths of each species have been illustrated and photographed. The frequency of occurrence of each characteristic was calculated by total length classes (TL) and differences within and among them have been analyzed applying multiple χ² test (significance 0.05). RESUMO Esta publicação é sequência de uma série que constituirá um Atlas de Otólitos de Teleostei da região Sudeste-Sul brasileira. Neste artigo são apresentados resultados de análises morfológicas e morfométricas dos sagittae de peixes pertencentes às ordens: Albuliformes (uma espécie), Anguiliformes (quatro), Osmeriformes (uma), Stomiiformes (uma), Aulopiformes (cinco), Myctophiformes (nove), Ophidiiformes (três), Polimixiiformes (uma), Batrachoidiformes (uma) e Lophiformes (três). Foram analisadas feições, medidas e índices usualmente empregados conforme metodologia apresentada nas séries anteriores. Três otólitos de cada espécie foram desenhados e fotografados, sempre que possível. A frequência de ocorrência de cada característica por classe de comprimento total foi calculada (CT) e as diferenças dentro de cada classe e entre elas foram analisadas aplicando o Teste χ² múltiplo (significância 0,05).

Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) elongatus (Tomquist, 1931) Petter, 1974, from Venezuela, of which D.(C.) amaurincai (Freitas, Vicente & Ibáñez, 1969) Petter, 1974 is proposed as a junior synonym, is redescribed and comments on the present status of the remaining species under the group, namely D.(C.) dichelyneformes (Szidat, 1950) Petter, 1974, D.(C.) rodriguesi (Pinto, Fábio & Noronha, 1970) Petter, 1974 and D.(C.) travassosi (Guimarães & Cristofaro, 1974), occuring in South America are made. Dollfusentis chandleri Golvan, 1969 (Acanthocephala, Illiosentidae), Poecilancistrium caryophyllum (Diesing, 1850)(Cestoidea, Otobothriidae) and Callitetrarhynchus gracilis (Rudolphi, 1819)(Cestoidea, Dasyrhynchidae) as well as larval forms of Echinocephalus sp. (Nematoda, Gnathostomatidae) and Contracaecum sp. (Nematoda, Anisakidae) are also reported. (Nematoda, Gnathostomatidae) e Contracaecum sp. (Nematoda, Anisakidae) são também assinaladas.

Através de arrastos mensais de praia, realizados com rede de calao na região do Mar Casado-Guarujá e Mar Pequeno-São Vicente, SP, de maio de 1984 a maio de 1985, foi capturado um total de 5723 exemplares de peixes pertencentes a 42 espécies. É apresentada uma lista por espécies, ocorrência sazonal e abundancia relativa por área de coleta. Em ambas as áreas poucas especies são dominantes, sendo que no Mar Casado ocorrem Trachinotus carolinus (Carangidae) , juvenis de Mugilidae, Harengula clupeola (Clupeidae), Trachinotus falcatus (Carangidae) e Eucinostomus melapterus (Gerreidae); no Mar Pequeno, ocorrem juvenis de Mugilidae, Xelomelaniris brasiliensis (Atherinidae), Opisthonema oglinum e Harengula Clupeola (Clupeidae). O Mar Pequeno apresenta maior riqueza de espécies, com maiores valores no numero de indivíduos e na captura por unidade de esforço, aparentemente correlacionados com a temperatura da água que é mais baixa no inverno e mais elevada no verão-outono. O índice de diversidade variou sazonalmente, não parecendo estar relacionado com os parâmetros ambientais. Through a monthly beach seine survey programme carried out in the coastal beach of Mar Casado (Guarujá-SP) and in the estuarine beach of Mar Pequeno (São Vicente-SP), from May, 1984 to May, 1985, it was yielded a total of 5723 individuals of 42 species of marine and estuarine fish. A list of species, seasonal occurrence and relative abundances is presented. For each area, we found only five dominant species as: in Mar Casado, Trachinotus carolinus and T. falctus (Carangidae), juveniles of Mugilidae, Harengula clupeola (Clupeidae) and Eucinostmus melanopterus (Gerreidae); in Mar Pequeno, juveniles of Mugilidae, Xenomelaniris brasilienses (Atherinidae), Opisthonema oglinum and Harengula clupeola (Clupeidae). In Mar Pequeno we found the greatest richness of species, the highest values of individuals's number, and CPUE, apparently related with water's temperature that are lower in winter and higher in summer-fall. The Shannon-Weaver Index was calculated to determine the diversity of ichthyofauna; it varies seasonally and seems not to be related with any hydrological parameters.

A preliminary study was carried out on electropherograms of eye-lens, muscle proteins and zymograms of muscle esterases of ten Notothenia larseni, six Notothenia nudifrons and one lanternfish, Electrona antarctica. The fish were collected by the R/V "Prof. W. Besnard" of the Institute of Oceanography, University of São Paulo, during the First Brazilian Expedition to Antarctica. Eye-lens proteins were analysed on cellulose acetate membrane, muscle proteins and esterases on gel of polyaorylamide. Eye-lens proteins showed three types of electropherograms for N. larseni, and two types for N. nudifrons. One of the electropherograms of N. larseni can be readily distinguished from those of N. nudifrons. Electropherograms of muscle proteins of N. larseni and N. nudifrons are very similar and, consist of sixteen to seventeen fractions. Electropherograms of muscle proteins of N. larseni are severely affected by the conservation of the extracts overnight under -20ºC. All N. nudifrons were of the same zymograms of esterases while those of N. larseni varied. Electropherograms of eye-lens and muscle proteins as well as zymograms of esterases of the lanternfish are different from those of nototheniids.Foi realizado um estudo preliminar sobre eletroferogramas de proteínas de cristalino e de músculo esquelético, e zimogramas de esterases de músculo esquelético de dez Notothenia larseni, seis Notothenia nudifrons e de um peixe-lanterna, Electrona antarctica. Os peixes foram coletados pelo N/Oc. "Prof. W. Besnard" do Instituto Oceanográfico da Universidade de São Paulo durante a I Expedição Brasileira à Antártica. As proteinas do cristalino foram analisadas em membranas de acetato de celulose, enquanto que as proteínas e esterases do músculo esquelético, em gel de poliacrilamida. As proteínas do cristalino apresentam três tipos distintos de eletroferogramas para N. larseni, e dois para N. nudifrons. Um dos eletroferogramas de N. larseni, pode ser prontamente distinguido dos de N. nudifrons. Eletrof erogramas de proteínas de músculo de N. larseni e de N. nudifrons são muito semelhantes e consistem de 16 a 17 frações. Os eletroferogramas de proteínas de músculo de N. larseni são severamente afetados pela preservação dos extratos por uma noite a -20ºC. Todos os N. nudifrons apresentam um mesmo zimograma de esterases enquanto que os de N. larseni variam. Tanto os eletroferogramas de proteínas do cristalino e do músculo como os zimogramas de esterases do peixe-lanterna são diferentes dos apresentados pelos nototeniideos.

O material utilizado provém das lagunas da Tijuca, Araruama e baía de Sepetiba no Estado do Rio de Janeiro; do rio Benevente e praia de Setiba no Estado do Espírito Santo e da praia da Ribeira no Estado de São Paulo. Dos locais de coleta são apresentados dados relativos à posição geográfica, fatores ambientais (profundidade, salinidade, temperatura, bem como elmentos da flórula e fáunula). Foram estudados 187 espécimes pertencentes às coleções ictiológicas e osteológicas da Universidade Santa Úrsula e coleção ictiológica do Museu Nacional. Alguns espécimes foram doados durante as pesquisas. O esqueleto da nadadeira caudal das espécis de Diapterus e Eucinostomus evidenciam um plano estrutural típico dos Percoidei que corresponde ao complexo uróforo do tipo “Acentraux Stégoures” (MONOD 1968). Conclui-se também que a família Gerridae se situa numa linha evolutiva proveniente de um Perciformes primitivo do tipo Va (MONOD op. cit.) exemplificado por Kuhlia sandvicensis em direção ao tipo especializado Vcl representado por Pristipomóides da família Lutjanidae. A família Gerridae, pelas pesquisas realizadas é muito próxima dos Lutjanidae, porém, menos especializada. A osteologia da caudal permite diferenciar os gêneros Diapterus e Eucinostomus. A análise detalhada das características anatômicas do esqueleto caudal das espécies estudadas de Diapterus também permite uma diferenciação específica que, espera-se, s eja confirmada com estudos posteriores dos demais representantes dos Gerridae. During the sea-bob shrimp fishery, a large quantity of miscellaneous fishes are caught, of which the most part was discarded in the sea. In this paper, quantitative aspects of this bycatch products are analized, e.g. diversity of ichthyofauna, catch per unit effort and proportions of the sea-bob shrimp versus acompanying fish fauna. Sampling has been made from Sept. 1981 to Sept. 1983 at Santos bay, one of the most important fishing area from Brazil. A total of 5583 fishes were collected during 28 fishery operations with otter-trawl.

No presente trabalho examinaram-se 90.418 exemplares de 186 espécies de peixes, coletados entre a região de Cabo de São Tome (RJ) e Torres (RS) - Brasil (latitudes 22º27'00"S -29º21'00"S), o que possibilitou um levantamento das espécies de isopodes parasitas que ocorrem na área e das espécies de peixes susceptíveis a este parasitismo. Foram constatadas 12 diferentes espécies de isopodes da família Cymothoidae e 13 espécies hospedeiras. O índice de parasitismo observado foi variável dependendo das espécies de parasita e hospedeiro consideradas, local de coleta e época do ano. O peixe Chloroscombrus chrysurus apresentou o maior índice de parasitismo entre as espécies analisadas, com área de concentração na região próxima a Paranaguá (PR), (latitude 25º40'00"S). Foi encontrado alto grau de especificidade de Cymotkoa spi com relação ao hospedeiro C. chrysurus. Lironeca redmanni entretanto, apesar de parasitar principalmente peixes da espécie Cynoscion striatus parece não ser parasita específico do mesmo, pois ocorreu também em outras seis espécies hospedeiras. In the present paper 90.418 individuals belonging to 186 species of fish were examined. The samples were taken on the southeastern Brazilian shelf, from Cabo de São Tome (RJ) (22º21'S) to Torres (RJ) (29º21'S) - Brazil. The present results indicate the presence of 12 different parasitic species of Cymothoidae and 13 host-species of fish. A high degree of specificity between Cymothoa sp1** and the host, Chloroscombrus chrysurus (Pisces, Carangidae) was disclosed. Although Lironeca redmanni is not specific-parasite, it was found mainly on Cynoscion striatus (Pisces, Sciaenidae).

Through a monthly beach seine survey programme carried out in the coastal beach of Mar Casado (Guarujá-SP) and in the estuarine beach of Mar Pequeno (São Vicente-SP), from May, 1984 to May, 1985, it was yielded a total of 5723 individuals of 42 species of marine and estuarine fish. A list of species, seasonal occurrence and relative abundances is presented. For each area, we found only five dominant species as: in Mar Casado, Trachinotus carolinus and T. falctus (Carangidae), juveniles of Mugilidae, Harengula clupeola (Clupeidae) and Eucinostmus melanopterus (Gerreidae); in Mar Pequeno, juveniles of Mugilidae, Xenomelaniris brasilienses (Atherinidae), Opisthonema oglinum and Harengula clupeola (Clupeidae). In Mar Pequeno we found the greatest richness of species, the highest values of individuals's number, and CPUE, apparently related with water's temperature that are lower in winter and higher in summer-fall. The Shannon-Weaver Index was calculated to determine the diversity of ichthyofauna; it varies seasonally and seems not to be related with any hydrological parameters. Através de arrastos mensais de praia, realizados com rede de calao na região do Mar Casado-Guarujá e Mar Pequeno-São Vicente, SP, de maio de 1984 a maio de 1985, foi capturado um total de 5723 exemplares de peixes pertencentes a 42 espécies. É apresentada uma lista por espécies, ocorrência sazonal e abundancia relativa por área de coleta. Em ambas as áreas poucas especies são dominantes, sendo que no Mar Casado ocorrem Trachinotus carolinus (Carangidae) , juvenis de Mugilidae, Harengula clupeola (Clupeidae), Trachinotus falcatus (Carangidae) e Eucinostomus melapterus (Gerreidae); no Mar Pequeno, ocorrem juvenis de Mugilidae, Xelomelaniris brasiliensis (Atherinidae), Opisthonema oglinum e Harengula Clupeola (Clupeidae). O Mar Pequeno apresenta maior riqueza de espécies, com maiores valores no numero de indivíduos e na captura por unidade de esforço, aparentemente correlacionados com a temperatura da água que é mais baixa no inverno e mais elevada no verão-outono. O índice de diversidade variou sazonalmente, não parecendo estar relacionado com os parâmetros ambientais.

Estudou-se o cariótipo de Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest, 1823), peixe teleósteo da família Sciaenidae, coletado, na região estuarino-lagunar de Cananéia, SP, Brasil. Foram realizadas preparações de cromossomos mitóticos e meióticos e ensaios de bandamento C e G. O número diplóide encontrado para a espécie foi de 2n = 48 cromossomos tipo t (acrocêntricos), cujos tamanhos variaram entre 3,38 µm e 1,49 µm. O 1º par de homólogos apresenta uma constricção secundária na região proximal ao centrômero. 0 número haplóide encontrado foi de n = 24. 0 conteúdo diploide de DNA foi de 1,24 ± 0,01 picogramas/célula. Não se obteve padrão de bandas G, mas a aplicação da técnica facilitou a identificação de pares adjacentes e a visualização da constricçao secundária. Bandas C localizam-se, principalmente, na região pericentromérica. The chromosomes of Micropogonias furnieri was studied. The diploid number is 48 acrocentric chromosomes and the haploid number is 24. The diploid DNA content of blood cell nucleus was measured. C and G banding techniques were tried.

A total of 152 shark specimens of the genus Etmopterus were collected in southern Brazil between Chui (34°20′S) and the Santa Marta Grande Cape (28°30′S). The specimens were caught by bottom-trawl cruises at depths ranging between 100 and 600 m from August to September 2001 and March to April 2002. The species, identified as Etmopterus gracilispinis, E. lucifer and E. bigelowi, occurred only in the south of 31°S at different depth layers. Etmopterus bigelowi occurred in the deep strata from 400–599 m, whereas E. gracilispinis occurred from 300–599 m. Moreover, two sampled E. lucifer males occurred at a depth of 540 m. The hydrographic conditions of temperature and salinity revealed no seasonal differences. The fact that most of the collected specimens were immature is strong evidence of size segregation, suggesting that the adults of these species occur at depths greater than 600 m. Sexual maturity in E. bigelowi occurred at 63–65 cm total length (TL) in females and 60 cm TL in males. All E. gracilispinis specimens were immature. One E. bigelowi female caught in August was pregnant. Birth was confirmed only in March for E. bigelowi and E. gracilispinis with TL at birth of about 17 and 13 cm, respectively.

The taxonomic status of three species of eels described from leptocephali larvae in 1960, is revised and elucidated: Leptocephalus anaelisae Tommasi, 1960, a member of Moringuidae, is confirmed as a junior synonym of Neoconger mucronatus Girard, 1858; Leptocephalus juliae Tommasi, 1960, a Muraenidae, is confirmed as a junior synonym of Uropterygius macularius (Lesueur, 1825); and Leptocephalus humbermariorum Tommasi, 1960, a Congridae, is now placed as species inquirenda in Rhynchoconger Jordan & Hubbs, 1925. Each of the three species was described based on a unique holotype, but none of the tree holotypes were found in any scientific collection investigated by us. Indeed, the three holotypes are considered to be permanently lost.
