Glass-forming ability is one of the most desired properties of organic compounds dedicated to optoelectronic applications. Therefore, finding general structure–property relationships and other rules governing vitrification and related near-glass-transition phenomena is a burning issue for numerous compound families, such as Schiff bases. Hence, we employ differential scanning calorimetry, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and quantum density functional theory calculations to investigate near-glass-transition phenomena, as well as ambient- and high-pressure molecular dynamics for two structurally related Schiff bases belonging to the family of glycine imino esters. Firstly, the surprising great stability of the supercooled liquid phase is shown for these compounds, also under high-pressure conditions. Secondly, atypical self-organization via bifurcated hydrogen bonds into lasting centrosymmetric dimers is proven. Finally, by comparing the obtained results with the previous report, some general rules that govern ambient- and high-pressure molecular dynamics and near-glass transition phenomena are derived for the family of glycine imino esters. Particularly, we derive a mathematical formula to predict and tune their glass transition temperature (Tg) and its pressure coefficient (dTg/dp). We also show that, surprisingly, despite the presence of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds, van der Waals and dipole–dipole interactions are the main forces governing molecular dynamics and dielectric properties of glycine imino esters.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are a novel solar cell alternative characterized by lower toxicity by using coordination transition metal compounds while providing high performance benchmarks, such as power conversion efficiency. Particular attention should be paid to compounds containing Cu, which can act both as dyes and as redox mediators, even though compounds relying on other transition metals are also frequently reported. In this paper, examples of compounds containing transition metals in combination with several ligands are presented, and their basic photovoltaic parameters are given.

In this paper experimental investigation is presented to study the contact of a deformable hemisphere with a hard flat. Hemispheres were made from steel and copper, but flat from silicon carbide. During contact, deformation of hemisphere was measured. After experiment, plastic contact area of hemisphere was estimated on the basis of surface topography measurement by white light interferometer. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical models, showing good agreement.

Surface topographies of discs and balls after wear process were analysed. Discs were made from 42CrMo4 steel with hardness of 42 HRC, but balls from 100Cr6 steel of hardness 64 HRC. They were measured using white light interferometer Talysurf CCI Lite. Procedures for minimizing errors of wear loss determination were discussed. They can be applied thanks to software TalyMap. It was found that application of wear analysis of discs and balls on a micro scale allowed us precise determination of their wear after tribological tests, however this analysis should be careful, particularly for surfaces of high roughness.

Two-process random textures seem to present better functional properties than one-process surfaces. There are many random two-process textures. Plateau-honed cylinder surfaces are the most popular example. Two-process surfaces are also created during the initial periods of life of machined elements. However, knowledge about two-process textures measurement, modeling, and behavior is low. Two-process surfaces are very sensitive to measurement errors. It is very difficult to model them. Special methods of their characterization were created. Their functional significance was studied in a small number of publications. In this paper, measurement, characterization, and modeling of two-process textures were presented. The functional impact of them was analyzed, the effects on contact mechanics and friction and wear were mainly studied. Finally, considerations of future challenges were addressed. The nature of two-process random textures should be taken into account during analyses of properties of machined elements. The plateau part decides about the asperity contact, and the valley portion governs the hydrodynamic lubrication.

Experiments were conducted under a dry gross fretting regime. Steel discs were put in contact with ceramic balls. Before tribological tests, discs were subjected to ball burnishing with different pressures. Due to ball burnishing, a decrease in surface amplitude and an increase in microhardness occurred. Ball burnishing caused decreases in the friction force and volumetric wear of up to 45% in comparison to sliding pairs containing milled discs. The friction force and volumetric wear were higher for a higher roughness of disc.

The paper presents the dynamic response of annular three-layered plate subjected to loads variable in time. The plate is loaded in the plane of outer layers. The plate core has the electrorheological properties expressed by the Bingham body model. The dynamic stability loss of plate with elastic core is determined by the critical state parameters, particularly by the critical stresses. Numerous numerical observations show the influence of the values of viscosity constant and critical shear stresses, being the Bingham body parameters, on the supercritical viscous fluid plate behaviour. The problem has been solved analytically and numerically using the orthogonalization method and finite difference method. The solution includes both axisymmetric and asymmetric plate dynamic modes.

This article presents the synthesis and molecular dynamics investigation of three novel cyclic thioethers: 2,3-(4′-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10-tetrathiacyclododeca-2-ene (compound 1), 2,3,14,15-bis(4′,4″(5″)-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25-octathiacyclotetracosa-2,14-diene (compound 2), and 2,3,8,9-bis(4′,4″(5″)-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10-tetrathiacyclododeca-2,8-diene (compound 3). The compounds exhibit relatively high glass transition temperatures (Tg), which range between 254 and 283 K. This characteristic positions them within the so-far limited category of crown-like glass-formers. We demonstrate that cyclic thioethers may span both the realms of ordinary and sizeable molecular glass-formers, each featuring distinct physical properties. Furthermore, we show that the Tg follows a sublinear power law as a function of the molar mass within this class of compounds. We also reveal multiple dielectric relaxation processes of the novel cyclic thioethers. Above the Tg, their dielectric loss spectra are dominated by a structural relaxation, which originates from the cooperative reorientation of entire molecules and exhibits an excess wing on its high-frequency slope. This feature has been attributed to the Johari–Goldstein (JG) process. Each investigated compound exhibits also at least one intramolecular secondary non-JG relaxation stemming from conformational changes. Their activation energies range from approximately 19 kJ/mol to roughly 40 kJ/mol. Finally, we analyze the high-pressure molecular dynamics of compound 1, revealing a pressure-induced increase in its Tg with a dTg/dp coefficient equal to 197 ± 8 K/GPa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work is focused on the issue of non-measured points – one of the most important problems in surface texture measurements using optical methods. The fundamental aim of this research is to analyse errors of surface texture measurements caused by the presence of non-measured points. This study is divided into two parts. In the first part, circles with non-measured points were artificially created on peak portions of measured surfaces. In the second part – the results of measurement by a Talysurf CCI Lite interferometer were analysed. A measurement area of 3.3 × 3.3 mm contained 1024 × 1024 points. The measurements were performed with different intensity of light. Changes of parameters regarding the analysed errors depended on a surface type. The following parameters are susceptible to errors: skewness Ssk, areal material ratio Smr, as well as the following feature parameters: Spd, Sda, Sdv, Sha and Shv. Inaccuracies of measurement in valley parts of two-process textures led usually to larger errors of parameter computations compared with deviations in peak portions.
