Abstract

A Hybrid discrete-continuum Cellular Automata (HCA) approach based on coupling classical thermomechanics and logics of CA-switching to simulate new phase generation and grain growth is proposed. On the basis of the HCA, numerical experiments on thermal-activated recrystallization of pure titanium in the vicinity of crack edges are performed. The 3D cellular automaton is aimed at simulating the behavior of a V-notched specimen region that imitates the crack tip vicinity. Numerical experiments provide calculating heat expansion in the material under study through taking into account thermal stress accumulation and microrotation initiation. Abstract

A technique for determining the fracture toughness of materials on the base of the test data of small-size specimens with a chevron notch is proposed. The brittle ceramics ZrO2 + 3% Y2O3 were tested by the wedge method. The correct transformation from applied wedging force to the bending force of the ceramic chevron-notched specimens, taking into account the deformation of ligament and the friction coefficient between the wedge and the specimen is made. New experimental results are given for ceramics ZrO2 + 3% Y2O3. The loading diagram of brittle ceramic discover non-linear stage of deformation. Inelastic deformation is closely related to crack origin and its growth in chevron-notched zone. The evolution of the fracture toughness characteristics was investigated for all stages of crack growth. The critical stress intensity factor and the specific fracture energy have been estimated.
