Abstract

Environmental sustainability encompasses various problems, including clean air, renewable energy, climate change, safe environments, and the capacity to live in a healthy community. One possible strategy for addressing these global problems is the circular bio-economy. Cleaner and lower-carbon environments may be fostered via the production of bioenergy and biomaterials, which can also help to maintain the energy-environment connection. To improve sustainability and the state of the planet, scientists are looking at renewable energy sources like ethanol. Compared to gasoline, ethanol has a reduced carbon footprint and a greater energy density, making it a viable alternative fuel. This study gives an overview of ethanol as a possible alternative fuel for flex-powered power generators in India to meet the goals of the circular bio-economy. This paper details the results of flex-fuel testing conducted on a light-duty power generator using an ethanol-gasoline mix. The findings reveal improved thermal efficiency and lower fuel consumption rates than basic fuel. The emissions of both carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons were shown to be reduced. 111. Underrepresentation of ethnic minorities in hypertension research-a survey of enablers and barriers among South Asian and African communities in Glasgow.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is the biggest contributor to the global cardiovascular burden with evidence for ethnic differences in treatment response and outcomes. Under-representation of ethnic minorities in clinical research is well known, and despite wide-ranging public engagement events by the Glasgow Blood Pressure Clinic team, there was a lack of participation of ethnic minorities in both engagement activities and clinical trials conducted by them. This study aims to explore the awareness and knowledge of hypertension and the facilitators and barriers to participation in hypertension clinical research among South Asian (SA) and African (AFR) communities in Glasgow. METHODS: A survey questionnaire was co-developed with representatives from South Asian (SA) and African (AFR) patients and community members in Glasgow to understand awareness and knowledge of hypertension and enablers and barriers to participation in clinical research. The survey was distributed to adults (aged > 18) years of SA or AFR ancestry at public engagement events at venues that were frequently visited by these two communities in Glasgow. RESULTS: The survey response rate was 337 (67.4%) consisting of 242 (71.8%) South Asian (SA) and 56 (16.9%) African (AFR) respondents. Thirty-nine questionnaires were excluded because of incompletion. Most of the respondents were not born in the UK and were in the 35-53-year group (AFR 29 (51%), SA 113 (47%)). The proportion living in the most deprived (SIMD 1) and least deprived (SIMD 5) was respectively 26 (12.4%) and 34 (16.2%) for SA and 20 (42.6%) and 2 (4.3%) for AFR. There was a considerable recognition that treatment needs to be ethnicity-specific (SA/AFR = 107 (48%)/23 (45.1%)) and that current cardiovascular disease treatment guidelines were not tailored for different ethnicities 84 (38.5%)/23 (45.1%). Abstract

Photoreceptor proteins enable organisms to sense and respond to light. The newly discovered CarH-type photoreceptors use a vitamin [B.sub.12] derivative, adenosylcobalamin, as the light-sensing chromophore to mediate light-dependent gene regulation. Here we present crystal structures of Thermus thermophilus CarH in all three relevant states: in the dark, both free and bound to operator DNA, and after light exposure. These structures provide visualizations of how adenosylcobalamin mediates CarH tetramer formation in the dark, how this tetramer binds to the promoter -35 element to repress transcription, and how light exposure leads to a large-scale conformational change that activates transcription. In addition to the remarkable functional repurposing of adenosylcobalamin from an enzyme cofactor to a light sensor, we find that nature also repurposed two independent protein modules in assembling CarH. These results expand the biological role of vitamin [B.sub.12] and provide fundamental insight into a new mode of light-dependent gene regulation., Light allows for photosynthesis and other essential light-dependent chemical reactions. Abstract

In the current examination, an effort has been made to look into and examine the mechanical characteristics of stir cast composites manufactured from Cu+10wt% Sn alloy reinforced with graphene and Aluminum Oxide metal matrix. In this investigation, Cu+10wt% Sn Alloy was employed as the basic matrix and reinforcements included graphene and aluminium oxide particles. Casting in carried out in 3 different steps 2 wt. % of Gr and Al2O3 were added in to the basic matrix the hybrid composite is being prepared second and third casting of Cu+10wt% Sn alloy+ Gr and Cu+10wt% Sn alloy+ Al2O3 as reinforcements, namely Gr and Al2O3, were warmed to a temperature of 400 degrees Celsius and disseminated. Utilizing optical microscopy, the microstructural investigation produced a matrix alloy with uniformly distributed reinforced particles. The goal was to look at the viability of the method and the mechanical characteristics that would result, such as ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and hardness. The findings showed that adding Gr and Al2O3 particles to Cu-Sn alloy significantly improved the composite's mechanical characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

128. Laparoscopic feeding jejunostomy using T-tube-technique and analysis of outcomes

Abstract

Background: Enteral nutrition is of paramount importance in management of upper gastrointestinal tract malignancies. Although various access routes for enteral nutrition are available, feeding jejunostomy tube is preferred to other methods. Since minimally invasive techniques have many advantages, we decided to perform it during staging laparoscopy.Methods: The medical records of all patients who underwent laparoscopic feeding jejunostomy between October 2019 and September 2021, in the department of surgical gastroenterology, Madurai medical college were retrospectively reviewed. Patient demographics, ECOG performance status, types of malignancy, indications for feeding jejunostomy, operative time, time to start feeds, length of hospital stay and complications were analysed.Results: 75 patients underwent laparoscopic feeding jejunostomies (51 men and 24 women), with a mean age of 51.6±11.7 years, using this method. ECOG performance status was between 0-2. Mean operating time was 83±8.8 minutes. Mean length of hospital stay was 3.5 days. There was no conversion, however one patient required reoperation for peritubal leak.Conclusions: Feeding jejunostomy can be accomplished by a total laparoscopic technique using intracorporeal suturing. The technique we propose is relatively simple, reproducible, cost effective and can be widely adopted.

Abstract

The NASA Decadal Survey (2011), Recapturing a Future for Space Exploration: Life and Physical Sciences Research for a New Era, emphasized the importance of expanding NASA life sciences research to long duration, rodent experiments on the International Space Station (ISS). To accomplish this objective, flight hardware, operations, and science capabilities supporting mouse studies in space were developed at NASA Ames Research Center. The first flight experiment carrying mice, Rodent Research Hardware and Operations Validation (Rodent Research-1), was launched on Sept 21, 2014 in an unmanned Dragon Capsule, SpaceX4, exposing the mice to a total of 37 days in space. Ground control groups were maintained in environmental chambers at Kennedy Space Center. Mouse health and behavior were monitored for the duration of the experiment via video streaming. Here we present behavioral analysis of two groups of five C57BL/6 female adult mice viewed via fixed camera views compared with identically housed Ground Controls. Flight (Flt) and Ground Control (GC) mice exhibited the same range of behaviors, including eating, drinking, exploratory behavior, self- and allo-grooming, and social interactions at similar or greater levels of occurrence. Mice propelled themselves freely and actively throughout the Habitat using their forelimbs to push off or by floating from one cage area to another, and they quickly learned to anchor themselves using tails and/or paws. Overall activity was greater in Flt as compared to GC mice, with spontaneous ambulatory behavior including the development of organized ‘circling’ or ‘race-tracking’ behavior that emerged within the first few days of flight and encompassed the primary dark cycle activity for the remainder of the experiment. We quantified the bout frequency, duration and rate of circling with respect to characteristic behaviors observed in the varying stages of the progressive development of circling: flipping utilizing two sides of the habitat, circling, multi-lap circling and group-circling. Once begun, mice did not regress to flipping behavior or other previous behavioral milestones for the remainder of flight. An overall upward trend in circling frequency, rate, duration, participation, and organization was observed over the course of the 37-day spaceflight experiment. In this presentation, we will summarize qualitative observations and quantitative comparisons of mice in microgravity and 1g conditions. Behavioral analyses provide important insights into the overall health and adaptation of mice to the space environment, and identify unique behaviors and social interactions to guide future habitat development and research on rodents in space.
