- Abstract
Atherosclerosis (also known as Arteriosclerotic Vascular Disease or ASVD) is the condition in which an artery wall thickens as the result of a build-up of fatty materials such as cholesterol. It is a syndrome affecting arterial blood vessels, a chronic inflammatory response in the walls of arteries, in large part due to the accumulation of macrophage white blood cells and promoted by Low-density lipoproteins (plasma proteins that carry cholesterol and triglycerides) without adequate removal of fats and cholesterol from the macrophages by functional high density lipoproteins (HDL). It is commonly referred to as a hardening or furring of the arteries. It is caused by the formation of multiple plaques within the arteries. Other arteriosclerotic disease is aortic aneurysm usually affecting the abdominal tract of the vessel. The prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) varies ranging from 4.1% to 11.5% in European men. This disorder is characterized by localized structural deterioration of the aortic wall, leading to progressive dilatation and eventual aortic rupture. Rupture of AAA is responsible for 1.5% of the total mortality in males over 55 years of age. Both disease seem to share common causes in alteration in lipid metabolism and immune response against host and oxidised lipids, leading to a condition of chronic inflammation affecting all the vascular system, especially the big diameter arteries. There are several factors such as smoking, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and male sex, which are well known risk factors for the development of AAA and carotid stenosis. However, better understanding of molecular mechanisms is an important step toward clarification of the pathophysiology, identification of genetic and molecular biomarkers and development of new therapeutic strategies for AAA and atherosclerosis in general. Gene expression profiling studies by microarray technologies are particularly appropriate to investigate and create working hypotheses to und

- Abstract
Intimal hyperplasia (IH) limits the success of many vascular interventions, including bypass grafting endarterectomy and stenting. IH following vascular injury is characterized by vascular smooth muscle cells proliferation and migration, matrix deposition, inflammation. The aim of the study was to investigate, in a mild-hypercholesterolemic pig model of vascular injury: i) the role of Heme Oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in the pathogenesis of IH; ii) the molecular mechanism of prevention and therapy mediated by atorvastatin; iii) the atorvastatin-mediated induction of HO-1 in response to vascular injury. Balloon injury (BI) was used to induce IH in pig carotid arteries. Pigs were divided in 3 groups (n=7 each): standard diet; high-cholesterol diet; high-cholesterol diet and atorvastatin (80 mg/die). Carotid sections were analyzed by morphometric and immunohistochemical analyses. Hemochrome, cholesterolemia, proinflammatory cytokines profiles were also evaluated. Hypercholesterolemia induced a significant increase of total and LDL-cholesterol, exacerbated IH, increased extracellular matrix deposition, inhibited HO-1 expression and increased the local and systemic inflammatory state compared to standard diet. Atorvastatin prevented IH development by enhancing HO-1 expression, reducing the number of T-cell infiltrating the site of vascular injury, and lowering the plasmatic concentration of proinflammatory cytokines. In conclusion: i) a high-cholesterol diet induces a persistent state of vascular inflammation that worsen the vascular response following BI; ii) atorvastatin has a protective role in the pathogenesis and outcome of inflammatory response following vascular injury; iii) atorvastatin prevents IH inducing HO-1 expression in the vascular wall.

- Abstract

We present the status of the ASPECT-BET (An sdd-SPECTrometer for BETa decay studies) project which is aimed at developing a new detection strategy to perform high-precision, high-accuracy measurements of the energy spectra of beta decays of interest for the physics community, in particular in the field of nuclear physics, double beta decay and reactor neutrinos. The aim is to exploit a relatively novel spectroscopic technique based on Silicon Drift Detectors. An SDD-spectrometer, equipped with all the ancillary detectors required to reject events with only a partial energy deposition in the main sensitive elements, will provide high-statistics and virtually zero-background data. In order to isolate and study the systematic uncertainties, the statistical error on the measured spectra has to be reduced to a negligible level, balancing source activity, measurement duration and background. Reliable and well understood Montecarlo simulations are a key component of this application, as they provide a model for the response functions of the spectrometer, to be deconvolved from the data in order to correctly reconstruct the original spectral shapes. Thanks to the flexibility of the SDD detector technology, the here presented spectrometer could be coupled to a variety of beta sources, ranging from nuclei deposited on the surface of SDDs to minimise source self-absorpion to short-lived isotopes created and collected at unstable isotope beams like ISOLDE at CERN or the exotic beams at LNS, Catania. The current status of the technology, as well as some preliminary sensitivity studies, are presented and discussed.

CUORE is a 741kg array of TeO 2 bolometers for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te. The detectoris being constructed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, where it will start taking data in 2015. If thetarget background of 0.01counts/(keVkgy) will be reached, in five years of data taking CUORE will have a 1˙halflife sensitivity of 10 26 y. CUORE-0 is a smaller experiment constructed to test and demonstrate the performancesexpected for CUORE. The detector is a single tower of 52 CUORE-like bolometers that started taking data in spring2013. The status and perspectives of CUORE will be discussed, and the first CUORE-0 data will be presented. Keywords: Double beta decay, Neutrino mass, Bolometers1. IntroductionNeutrinos are massive particles. A beautiful proof ofthis important property was obtained by neutrino oscil-lation experiments more than a decade ago. Since then, the key role of neutrinoless double beta decay searcheshas been established, as attested by the growing numberof experimental proposals in the last years.Neutrinoless double beta decay ( 0 ) is a proposedvery rare nuclear process in which a nucleus transformsinto its (A,Z+2) isobar with the emission of two elec-trons. While the two neutrino channel ( 2 ) – wheretwo neutrinos are contemporary emitted in the decay – isallowed by the Standard Model of Particle Physics andhas been observed experimentally in a dozen of isotopeswith half-lives of the order 10

© Copyright owned by the author(s). CUORE is a ton-scale experiment approaching the data taking phase in Gran Sasso National Laboratory. Its primary goal is to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay in 130 Te using 988 crystals of tellurim dioxide. The crystals are operated as bolometers at about 10 mK taking advantage of one of the largest dilution cryostat ever built. Concluded in March 2016, the cryostat commissioning consisted in a sequence of cool down runs each one integrating new parts of the apparatus. The last run was performed with the fully configured cryostat and the thermal load at 4 K reached the impressive mass of about 14 tons. During that run the base temperature of 6.3 mK was reached and maintained for more than 70 days. An array of 8 crystals, called mini-tower, was used to check bolometers operation, readout electronics and DAQ. Results will be presented in terms of cooling power, electronic noise, energy resolution and preliminary background measurements.
