BackgroundDanlou tablets exert auxiliary advantages in treating coronary heart disease (CHD), but a summary of evidence-based proof is lacking. This study aims to systematically evaluate Danlou tablets in treating CHD from two aspects, including efficacy and safety.MethodsBy a thorough retrieval of the four English databases, namely, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science, and the four Chinese databases, namely, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP database, and China Biomedical Literature Service System, we found all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) related to Danlou tablets in treating CHD. The retrieval time was from the construction of the database to April 2022. We engaged two researchers to screen the studies, extract the required data, and assess the risk of bias. We then used RevMan5.3 and STATA.14 software to conduct a meta-analysis. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) was used to evaluate the quality of outcome indicators.ResultsSeventeen RCTs involving 1,588 patients were included. ObjectThe purpose of this study was to describe the longitudinal dynamic hemoglobin trajectories in patients undergoing cardiac surgery and to explore whether they provide a broader perspective in predicting AKI compared to traditional threshold values. Additionally, the interaction of red blood cell transfusion was also investigated.MethodsThe MIMIC-IV database was searched to identify patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) was used to determine the hemoglobin trajectories in the first 72 h after ICU admission. The correlation between hemoglobin trajectories and AKI was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression and inverse probability of treatment weighting. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were created in the dataset to further validate previously reported thresholds.ResultsA total of 4,478 eligible patients were included in this study. Three hemoglobin trajectories were identified by GBTM, which were significantly different in the initial hemoglobin level and evolution pattern. Compared to the “the lowest, rising, and then declining” trajectory, patients in the “the highest, declining” and “medium, declining” trajectory groups had significantly lower AKI risk (OR 0.56; 95% CI 0.48, 0.67) and (OR 0.70; 95% CI 0.55, 0.90), respectively. ROC analysis yielded a disappointing result, with an AUC of 0.552, sensitivity of 0.25, and specificity of 0.86 when the hemoglobin threshold was set at 8 g/dl in the entire cohort. In the subgroup analysis of red blood cell transfusion, hemoglobin levels above 10 g/dl predicted higher AKI risk, and there was no correlation between hemoglobin trajectories and AKI in the non-red blood cell transfusion subgroup.ConclusionThis study identified a hemoglobin trajectory that is associated with an increased risk of AKI after cardiac surgery. It is noteworthy that fixed hemoglobin thresholds should not be applied to all patient types. In patients receiving red blood cell transfusion, maintaining hemoglobin levels above 10 g/dl through transfusion was associated with an increased risk of AKI.

Summary: Canonical WNT pathway in mature adipocytes exacerbates obesity. In this study, we constructed UCP1-positive adipocytes-specific Ctnnb1 knockout mice (UBKO) and observed increased “browning” of white adipose tissue (WAT) following cold exposure or CL-316,243 administration compared to controls. UBKO mice also displayed increased energy expenditure. Furthermore, β-catenin (encoded by Ctnnb1) inhibited thermogenic genes expression in differentiated beige adipocytes and repressed Ucp1 expression at transcription level. Transcriptome analysis revealed UBKO mice treated with CL-316,243 had enhanced mitochondrial function and downregulated immune-related genes in epididymal WAT. Improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity were observed in 50-week-old UBKO mice. Public datasets indicated that CTNNB1 expression was inversely correlated with several thermogenic genes expression in human adipose tissue/adipocytes and positively correlated with BMI or waist-hip ratio (WHR). We proposed that intervention of β-catenin in adipocytes could be an effective strategy to enhance energy expenditure and improve age-related metabolic performance.

Abstract Recent genetic evidence has linked WNT downstream mutations to fat distribution. However, the roles of WNTs in human obesity remain unclear. Here, the authors screen all Wnt‐related paracrine factors in 1994 obese cases and 2161 controls using whole‐exome sequencing (WES) and identify that 12 obese patients harbor the same mutations in RSPO1 (p.R219W/Q) predisposing to human obesity. RSPO1 is predominantly expressed in visceral fat, primarily in the fibroblast cluster, and is increased with adiposity. Mice overexpressing human RSPO1 in adipose tissues develop obesity under a high‐fat diet (HFD) due to reduced brown/beige fat thermogenesis. In contrast, Rspo1 ablation resists HFD‐induced adiposity by increasing thermogenesis. Mechanistically, RSPO1 overexpression or administration significantly inhibits adipocyte mitochondrial respiration and thermogenesis via LGR4–Wnt/β‐catenin signaling pathway. Importantly, humanized knockin mice carrying the hotspot mutation (p.R219W) display suppressed thermogenesis and recapitulate the adiposity feature of obese carriers. The mutation disrupts RSPO1's electrostatic interaction with the extracellular matrix, leading to excessive RSPO1 release that activates LGR4–Wnt/β‐catenin signaling and attenuates thermogenic capacity in differentiated beige adipocytes. Therefore, these findings identify that gain‐of‐function mutations and excessive expression of RSPO1, acting as a paracrine Wnt activator, suppress fat thermogenesis and contribute to obesity in humans.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a serious and fatal pulmonary inflammatory disease with an increasing incidence worldwide. The drugs nintedanib and pirfenidone, are listed as conditionally recommended drugs in the “Evidence-Based Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis”. However, these two drugs have many adverse reactions in clinical application. Salvianolic acid B (Sal B), a water-soluble component of Salvia miltiorrhiza, could alleviate bleomycin-induced peroxidative stress damage, and prevent or delay the onset of IPF by regulating inflammatory factors and fibrotic cytokines during the disease's progression. However, Sal B is poorly absorbed orally, and patient compliance is poor when administered intravenously. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find a new non-injection route of drug delivery. In this study, Sal B was used as model drug and l-leucine (LL) as excipient to prepare Sal B dry powder inhaler (Sal B-DPI) by spray drying method. Modern preparation evaluation methods were used to assess the quality of Sal B-DPI. Sal B-DPI is promising for the treatment of IPF, according to studies on pulmonary irritation evaluation, in vivo and in vitro pharmacodynamics, metabolomics, pharmacokinetics, and lung tissue distribution.

Abstract Background Patients who do not respond to conservative treatment of the isthmus are often treated with surgery. We used direct repair plus intersegment pedicle screw fixation for the treatment of lumbar spondylolysis. The aim of this observational study was to assess the effects of this technique and evaluate various risk factors potentially predicting the probability of disc and facet joint degeneration after instrumentation. Methods The study included 54 male L5 spondylolysis patients who underwent pars repair and intersegment fixation using pedicle screws. Bony union was evaluated using reconstruction images of computed tomography. Radiographic changes, including disc height, vertebral slip, facet joint and disc degeneration in the grade of adjacent and fixed segments, were determined from before to final follow-up. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with the incidence of disc and facet joint degeneration. Results Bony union was achieved in all cases. Logistic regression analysis revealed that instrumentation durations of greater than 15.5 months and 21.0 months were significant risk factors for the incidence of L4/5 and L5S1 facet degeneration, respectively. Conclusions Intersegmental pedicle screw fixation provides good surgical outcomes and good isthmic bony union rates in patients with lumbar spondylolysis. The duration of fixation was confirmed as a risk factor for facet joint degeneration. Once bony union is achieved, instrument removal should be recommended.

Background: The occurrence of compound hot extreme (CHE) events in China is increasingly frequent. This study aimed to investigate the association between CHEs and all-cause mortality in Shandong Province and to estimate the attributable excess deaths. Methods: We collected daily data on weather, air pollution, and all-cause mortality at the subdistrict level in Shandong Province from 2013 to 2018. A CHE was defined as both daily maximum and minimum temperatures being higher than their historical 90th percentiles during 2013–2018 hot seasons. A case time-series analysis with a distributed lagged non-linear model was applied to analyze the subdistrict-specific association between different hot extremes and mortality risk, which were then pooled at the province level using meta-analysis. Results: Hot nights (RR = 1.44, 95%CI: 1.35–1.53) and CHEs (RR = 1.77, 95%CI: 1.64–1.90) were significantly associated with an increased mortality risk. CHEs had a greater effect for females (RR = 1.99, 95%CI: 1.81–2.19) and the elderly (>74 years) (RR = 2.14, 95%CI: 1.93–2.38) than their counterparts, respectively. Cardiovascular and respiratory deaths were more susceptible to CHEs than other deaths. Each year, 4888 (95%CI: 4133–5811) excess deaths in Shandong Province were attributable to CHEs, accounting for 2.60% (95%CI: 2.20–3.10%) of all-cause deaths and equating to 50 (95%CI: 42–58) deaths per 1,000,000 residents. The CHE-related mortality burden varied across subdistricts, with the highest occurring in the southeastern area and the lowest occurring in the northeastern and southwestern regions. Conclusion: CHEs and hot nights were substantially associated with excess deaths in Shandong Province, especially for females, the elderly, and residents living in the southeastern area. Our findings may facilitate the development of a heat alert warning system and preventive measures for vulnerable populations.

Automated shuttle buses entail adopting new technologies and modifying users’ practices, cultural and symbolic meanings, policies, and markets. This results in a paradigmatic transition for a typical sociotechnical system: the transport system. However, the focus of the extant literature often lacks an overall vision, addressing a single technology, supply chain, or societal dimension. Although systemic design can manage multiple-level and long-term transitions, the literature does not discuss how systemic design tools can support implementation. This paper takes the four strategies proposed by Pereno and Barbero in 2020 as the theoretical framework to fill this literature gap, discussing the specific systemic design methods applicable to the design of automated shuttle bus systems. A six-week workshop to facilitate the exploration of future autonomous public transportation is taken as a case study. The systemic design approach was applied to enrich the Human–Machine Interaction (HMI) and functional architecture of automated shuttle buses.

Optimal identification and numerical models are powerful tools that have been widely used in geoscience research for many years. In this study, we proposed a novel optimal method to simulate a key parameter (cutoff draft) of the ridge keels due to dynamic deformation of sea ice at bottom. The sea ice ridges were measured in the Northwestern Weddell Sea of Antarctic, by a helicopter-borne electromagnetic-induction (EM) system. An optimal model with nonlinear-statistical constraints was developed, by taking deviations between the theoretical and measured keel draft (spacing) distributions as the performance criterion, and cutoff draft as the identified parameter. The properties of the optimal model and the existence of the optimal parameter were demonstrated. We identified that the optimal cutoff draft was 3.78 m via an optimal numerical algorithm, this value was then employed to separate the ridge keels from the ice bottom. Finally, the relationship between the mean keel draft and frequency (number of keels per km) was analyzed, and the result showed that this relationship was modeled well by a logarithmic function with a correlation coefficient of 0.7. The present optimal modeling method will provide a new theoretical reference for separating accurately the ridge keels from undeformed sea ice bottom, and analyzing the relationship between the morphologies of sea ice surface and bottom and the inversions of sea ice bottom draft and ice thickness by the surface height.

Process-based reactive transport modeling (RTM) integrates thermodynamic and kinetically controlled fluid-rock interactions with fluid flow through porous media in the subsurface and surface environment. RTM is usually conducted through numerical programs based on the first principle of physical processes. However, the calculation for complex chemical reactions in most available programs is an iterative process, where each iteration is in general computationally intensive. A workflow of neural network-based surrogate model as a proxy for process-based reactive transport simulation is established in this study. The workflow includes (1) base case RTM design, (2) development of training experiments, (3) surrogate model construction based on machine learning, (4) surrogate model validation, and (5) prediction with the calibrated model. The training experiments for surrogate modeling are generated and run prior to the predictions using RTM. The results show that the predictions from the surrogate model agree well with those from processes-based RTM but with a significantly reduced computational time. The well-trained surrogate model is especially useful when a large number of realizations are required, such as the sensitivity analysis or model calibration, which can significantly reduce the computational time compared to that required by RTM. The benefits are (1) it automatizes the experimental design during the sensitivity analysis to get sufficient numbers and coverage of the training cases; (2) it parallelizes the calculations of RTM training cases during the sensitivity analysis to reduce the simulation time; (3) it uses the neural network algorithm to rank the sensitivity of the parameters and to search the optimal solution for model calibration.

Nowadays online collective actions are pervasive, such as the rumor spreading on the Internet. The observed curves take on the S-shape, and we focus on evolutionary dynamics for S- shape curves of online rumor spreading. For agents, key factors, such as internal aspects, external aspects, and hearing frequency jointly determine whether to spread it. Agent-based modeling is applied to capture micro-level mechanism of this S-shape curve. We have three findings: (a) Standard S-shape curves of spreading can be obtained if each agent has the zero threshold; (b) Under zero-mean thresholds, as heterogeneity (SD) grows from zero, S-shape curves with longer right tails can be obtained. Generally speaking, stronger heterogeneity comes up with a longer duration; and (c) Under positive mean thresholds, the spreading curve is two-staged, with a linear stage (first) and nonlinear stage (second), but not standard S-shape curves either. From homogeneity to heterogeneity, the spreading S-shaped curves have longer right tail as the heterogeneity grows. For the spreading duration, stronger heterogeneity usually brings a shorter duration. The effects of heterogeneity on spreading curves depend on different situations. Under both zero and positive-mean thresholds, heterogeneity leads to S-shape curves. Hence, heterogeneity enhances the spreading with thresholds, but it may postpone the spreading process with homogeneous thresholds.

Chinese primitive philosophy, as the unity of cosmological ontology, epistemology and methodology of the Chinese philosophical system, is a complete and mature philosophical system formed in the late primitive society as early as before the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties. It is also the unity of the concept of Yin and Yang and constant life that is sublimated from the human-beings’ basic cultural consciousness: life consciousness and reproduction consciousness. The Chinese primitive culture, from the painted pottery culture 7,000 years ago to today, from the underground archaeological culture to the group culture on the ground, is a plastic art based on the concept of viewing objects and taking images. It is a broad concept of fine arts that determines the philosophical view, artistic view, emotional temperament, psychological quality and national spirit of the Chinese nation. The most primitive culture and primitive philosophy in China have been preserved with extremely rich and complete historical remains in the group's cultural and social life. It is for this reason that China is the only country with an ancient history of civilization that has not experienced a cultural break. The primitive culture and philosophical system of China, as the philosophical basis and main connotation of ethnic group culture, are completely accumulated in the ethnic groups’ social life. Folk art, which has accumulated the hundreds of millions of working masses’ wisdom in China, is the mother of the Chinese national culture and art that has been inherited from primitive society until today with distinct national and regional characteristics. It is a long-standing cultural form with the longest history, the widest mass participation, the most distinct regional characteristics and the richest cultural connotation in the Chinese national cultural form. The rapid development of the times makes the traditional folk customs and folk arts, which are generally deposited in the rural areas of China, become precarious. As a result, the research advantages of the unique human culture and the original culture of China will cease to exist. Therefore, it is an urgent historical task to make use of this advantage to study the original culture of China and the philosophical genes of the Chinese nation. Protection is imminent, and inheritance is the historical mission, which highlights the deeper significance of studying primitive culture and primitive philosophy in modern society.

This paper proposes an extended state observer-based ultra-local model-free three-vector predictive control method for Soft Open Point (SOP). First, the Ultra-Local Model-Free Predictive Control (ULMFPC) method is proposed to improve the robustness of the system, which only uses the input and output of the outer-loop, and any other parameters are not involved. Second, considering parameter perturbations and external disturbances in the SOP system, an expansion state observer (ESO) is established to observe the SOP system’s total perturbations and the perturbations are compensated in real-time to improve the system. Third, to solve the problem of significant current harmonics in traditional model predictive control (MPC), a three-vector MPC method (TV-MPC) is adopted to reduce the total harmonic distortion rate (THD) of the current. Finally, it is verified by simulation that the proposed method can effectively reduce the current harmonics of the SOP system, rate value setting time, and improve the dynamic performance effectively. When perturbations occur in the system, the proposed method can improve the anti-interference and robustness of the system.

ObjectiveTo analyze the latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among persons living with HIV(PLWH) in Jiangsu Province, to explore the factors affecting the positive rate of LTBI, and to take appropriate measures to control tuberculosis (TB) infection.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among PLWH in Jiangsu Province from June to July 2021. All PLWH in Jiangsu Province were used as the study population. Currently, the diagnosis of LTBI lacks a “gold standard” and can only be assisted by the immunological method. In this study, Tuberculin skin test (TST), ESAT6-CFP10 test (EC), and QuantiFERON-TB gold in-tube (QFT) were used to detect the positive rate of LTBI among PLWH and to analyze their risk factors.ResultsA total of 340 prisoners were included, 89.7% were male, the median age was 38 years [Interquartile Range (IQR):32-46 years], these patients were on Antiviral Therapy (ART), and median CD4 counts was 376 (IQR: 261-496), 103 (30.3%) were positive in at least one test, LTBI by TST was 16.5%, LTBI by EC was 15.9%, LTBI by QFT was 26.2%. Univariate analysis showed the results for TST, EC, and QFT were not affected by CD4 counts (p>0.05), and multivariate analysis showed that a history of incarceration was associated with an increased risk of positive TST (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]=1.98;95% CI,1.03-3.82), EC (aOR=2.65;95% CI,1.37-5.12) and QFT (aOR=2.01;95%CI,1.12-3.57), in addition, female gender was associated with increased risk of positive TST (aOR=3.66;95%CI,1.60-8.37) and EC (aOR=3.43;95%CI,1.46-8.07), and contact history of TB patients was associated with increased risk of TST (aOR= 2.54;95%CI,1.23-5.22) and QFT (aOR=2.03;95%CI,1.03-3.99), and ethnic minorities (aOR=0.26;95%CI,0.12-0.57), longer duration of incarceration was associated with an increased risk of positive QFT (aOR=1.12;95%CI,1.02-1.24). Conclusions Female gender, and ethnic minorities, history of incarceration, longer duration of incarceration, and contact history of TB patients are risk factors for LTBI among PLWH in Jiangsu Province, and attention should be paid to TB control in this population.

Abstract By constructing an empirical model of the spectral and latitudinal distribution of ion cyclotron waves on the basis of Cassini datasets, we investigate the resonant interactions between ion cyclotron waves and radiation belt electrons at Saturn. Calculations based on quasi‐linear bounce‐averaged diffusion coefficients show that at Saturn ion cyclotron waves can efficiently pitch angle scatter >∼1 MeV to tens of MeV electrons into the loss cone thereby inducing precipitation loss, while the mixed and momentum scattering effects are typically negligible. The resultant electron loss timescales range from a few to tens of minutes, which in fact decrease significantly with increasing L‐shell at L = 4–6. We also find that the kinetic effects introduced by pick‐up ring particles cause distinct changes in pitch angle scattering efficiency for lower energy electrons (

Summary: Background: Evidence on the comparative performance of purified protein derivative tuberculin skin tests (TST) and interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) for predicting incident active tuberculosis (TB) remains conflicting. We conducted an individual participant data meta-analysis to directly compare the predictive performance for incident TB disease between TST and IGRA to inform policy. Methods: We searched Medline and Embase from 1 January 2002 to 4 September 2020, and studies that were included in previous systematic reviews. We included prospective longitudinal studies in which participants received both TST and IGRA and estimated performance as hazard ratios (HR) for the development of all diagnoses of TB in participants with dichotomised positive test results compared to negative results, using different thresholds of positivity for TST. Secondary analyses included an evaluation of the impact of background TB incidence. We also estimated the sensitivity and specificity for predicting TB. We explored heterogeneity through pre-defined sub-group analyses (e.g. country-level TB incidence). Publication bias was assessed using funnel plots and Egger's test. This review is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42020205667. Findings: We obtained data from 13 studies out of 40 that were considered eligible (N = 32,034 participants: 36% from countries with TB incidence rate ≥100 per 100,000 population). All reported data on TST and QuantiFERON Gold in-Tube (QFT-GIT). The point estimate for the TST was highest with higher cut-offs for positivity and particularly when stratified by bacillus Calmette–Guérin vaccine (BCG) status (15 mm if BCG vaccinated and 5 mm if not [TST5/15 mm]) at 2.88 (95% CI 1.69–4.90). The pooled HR for QFT-GIT was higher than for TST at 4.15 (95% CI 1.97–8.75). The difference was large in countries with TB incidence rate

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are transcripts longer than 200 bp with low or no protein-coding ability, which play essential roles in various biological processes in plants. Tobacco is an ideal model plant for studying nicotine biosynthesis and metabolism, and there is little research on lncRNAs in this field. Therefore, how to take advantage of the mature tobacco system to profoundly investigate the lncRNAs involved in the nicotine pathway is intriguing. By exploiting 549 public RNA-Seq datasets of tobacco, 30,212 lncRNA candidates were identified, including 24,084 large intervening non-coding RNAs (lincRNAs), 5,778 natural antisense transcripts (NATs) and 350 intronic non-coding RNAs (incRNAs). Compared with protein-coding genes, lncRNAs have distinct properties in terms of exon number, sequence length, A/U content, and tissue-specific expression pattern. lincRNAs showed an asymmetric evolutionary pattern, with a higher proportion (68.71%) expressed from the Nicotiana sylvestris (S) subgenome. We predicted the potential cis/trans-regulatory effects on protein-coding genes. One hundred four lncRNAs were detected as precursors of 30 known microRNA (miRNA) family members, and 110 lncRNAs were expected to be the potential endogenous target mimics for 39 miRNAs. By combining the results of weighted gene co-expression network analysis with the differentially expressed gene analysis of topping RNA-seq data, we constructed a sub-network containing eight lncRNAs and 25 nicotine-related coding genes. We confirmed that the expression of seven lncRNAs could be affected by MeJA treatment and may be controlled by the transcription factor NtMYC2 using a quantitative PCR assay and gene editing. The results suggested that lncRNAs are involved in the nicotine pathway. Our findings further deepened the understanding of the features and functions of lncRNAs and provided new candidates for regulating nicotine biosynthesis in tobacco.

The fin field-effect transistor (FinFET) has been the mainstream technology on the VLSI platform since the 22 nm node. The silicon-on-insulator (SOI) FinFET, featuring low power consumption, superior computational power and high single-event effect (SEE) resistance, shows advantages in integrated circuits for space applications. In this work, a rad-hard design methodology for SOI FinFETs is shown to improve the devices’ tolerance against the Total Ionizing Dose (TID) effect. Since the fin height direction enables a new dimension for design optimization, a 3D Source/Drain (S/D) design combined with a gate dielectric de-footing technique, which has been readily developed for the 14 nm node FinFETs, is proposed as an effective method for SOI FinFETs’ TID hardening. More importantly, the governing mechanism is thoroughly investigated using fully calibrated technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulations to guide design optimizations. The analysis demonstrates that the 3D rad-hard design can modulate the leakage path in 14 nm node n-type SOI FinFETs, effectively suppress the transistors’ sensitivity to the TID charge and reduce the threshold voltage shift by >2×. Furthermore, the rad-hard design can reduce the electric field in the BOX region and lower its charge capture rate under radiation, further improving the transistor’s robustness.

Abstract The Central Plains has a long history, rich culture, unique geographical advantages, and profound cultural heritage. The occurrence of ancient cities in the Central Plains marks the formation of Chinese state-level societies. The number, size, and distribution of ancient cities have changed greatly from the late Yangshao to the Xia and Shang Dynasties, which reflects the evolution of settlement and social organization. In this study, Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial database technology was used to establish a spatiotemporal database of ancient cities in the late Yangshao, Longshan, as well as Xia and Shang Dynasties in the Central Plains. This paper uses GIS spatial analysis technology to analyze the relationship between the ancient city distribution and the geographical environment, as well as the evolution of ancient city's shapes and sizes. Furthermore, by using the method of the nearest neighbor distance and gravity center analysis, this paper discusses the agglomeration characteristics and gravity center evolution of ancient cities. The results show that: (1) Most of the ancient cities were distributed in areas below 500 m and within 3 km from the river during the time interval from the late Yangshao to Xia and Shang Dynasties; (2) The shape of the ancient cities gradually changed from circles to squares in the Central Plains, which became a unified model for the later ancient city design; (3) The sizes of the 18 ancient cities in the Yangshao period shared high similarity, with an average area of 20 hectares. The sizes of 24 ancient cities in the Longshan period increased significantly, with an average of 39 hectares. During the Xia and Shang Dynasties, there were 22 ancient cities with an average size of 340 hectares, and the grade of sizes became obvious, marking the entrance into Chinese state-level societies; (4) Cities were scattered in the decentralized pattern during the late Yangshao and Longshan periods, whereas they became agglomerative in Xia and Shang Dynasties. This reflects the evolution of the spatial scopes and social organizational forms; and (5) From the late Yangshao to Xia and Shang Dynasties, the gravity center of ancient cities moved around the Songshan Mountain from the northwest to the southeast and again to the northeast.

PurposePediatric testicular yolk sac tumor is a rare malignant germ cell tumor and there is a lack of large clinical studies. The purpose of this study is to summarize the clinical characteristics of pediatric testicular yolk tumor and evaluate the prognostic factors.Materials and methodsThe medical records of children with testicular yolk sac tumor in one pediatric medical centre in China from January 2005 to January 2021 were retrospectively investigated. Data regarding clinical characteristics, treatment and prognosis were collected.ResultsA total of 109 patients with a median diagnosed age of 18 months (range 2–69) were included in this study; of them 100 were diagnosed as stage I, 6 as stage II and 3 as stage IV. All patients underwent radical orchiectomy, and 61 of them underwent postoperative chemotherapy. The mean follow-up time was 61.3 months (range 3–259), during that time, 8 patients experienced relapse. The five-year overall survival was 90.6% (95% CI 84.6%–96.7%). Univariate Cox regression analysis showed that disease stage, relapse, maximum tumor diameter, and alpha-fetoprotein returning to normal within 2 months postoperatively were risk factors for survival (HRs of 25.43, 26.43, 1.48 and 0.08, respectively, p

BackgroundIt is generally believed that complement system is strongly associated with the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, complement system contains a variety of complement components, and the relationship between complement components and the risk and severity of NAFLD is inconsistent. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the association of complement components with the risk and severity of NAFLD.MethodsWe searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, Scopus, and ZhiWang Chinese databases from inception to May 2022 for observational studies reporting the risk of NAFLD with complement components. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to obtain pooled estimates of the effect due to heterogeneity.ResultsWe identified 18 studies with a total of 18560 included subjects. According to recent studies, levels of complement component 3 (C3) (mean difference (MD): 0.43, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.26-0.60), complement component 4 (C4) (MD: 0.04, 95% CI 0.02-0.07), complement component 5(C5) (MD: 34.03, 95% CI 30.80-37.27), complement factor B (CFB) (MD: 0.22, 95% CI 0.13-0.31) and acylation stimulating protein (ASP) (standard mean difference (SMD): 5.17, 95% CI 2.57-7.77) in patients with NAFLD were significantly higher than those in the control group. However, no statistical significance was obtained in complement factor D (CFD) levels between NAFLD and non-NAFLD (MD=156.51, 95% CI -59.38-372.40). Moreover, the levels of C3, C5, CFB, and ASP in patients with moderate and severe NAFLD were significantly higher than those in patients with mild NAFLD. Except for C4 and CFD, the included studies did not explore the changes in the severity of NAFLD according to the concentration of C4 and CFD.ConclusionsThis meta-analysis demonstrates that an increase in complement components including C3, C5, CFB, and ASP is associated with an increased risk and severity of NAFLD, indicating that they may be good biomarkers and targets for the diagnosis and treatment of NAFLD.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO [https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/], identifier CRD42022348650.

Flatfoot is a common foot deformity, and the collapse of the arch structure affects the foot cushioning during walking. A growing number of scholars have found that the analysis of the impact force should be combined with both the magnitude and the frequency of the impact force. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the plantar impact characteristics of flatfoot patients and normal foot people at different load-bearing buffer stage from the time and frequency domains. Sixteen males with flatfoot and sixteen males with normal foot were recruited to walk on the plantar pressure test system at the same step speed, and the vertical ground reaction force data were collected from the heel contact stage and the arch support stage. The differences in the frequency domain of the ground reaction force between the flatfoot and the normal foot in the two stages were analyzed according to the basic mechanical characteristics and the continuous wavelet transform. Independent sample t-test was used to compare the baseline data of subjects, and the differences in foot impact force characteristics at different stages of foot type and weight-bearing cushion phase were compared by two-factor repeated measures Analysis of Variance. 1) In terms of basic mechanical characteristics, In both groups for flatfoot patients and normal foot people, the peak ground reaction force was higher in the arch support stage compared to the heel contact stage (Pflatfoot 0.05), in the arch support stage, the force change load rate of patients with flatfoot was lower than that of normal foot people (p = 0.021). 2) The results of time and frequency domain characteristics showed that during the heel contact and the arch support stage, no significant differences in the maximum signal power as well as the corresponding time and the frequency of the main impact force between the normal foot and the flatfoot were found. Nitrogen modified atmosphere was an effective way to control pest infestation in grains. In this study, the quality changes of rice during nitrogen modified atmosphere packaging storage (N2-MAPS) were monitored. An un-targeted metabolomics method was used to detect the rice metabolites and explore the mechanism of N2-MAPS for delaying rice deterioration. In this study, two rice species were studied under N2-MAPS and conventional storage at 30 °C for 150 days. The quality changes of rice during storage were monitored. The results showed that N2-MAPS could retard the increase of fatty acid value and amylose content, and defer the decrease of enzyme activities. And N2-MAPS had no significant influence on texture characteristics of rice. The metabolomics results suggested some metabolites and pathways were affected by N2-MAPS and revealed that N2-MAPS could protect rice cells from oxidative damage, maintain cell integrity and stability by regulating the metabolism to delay the rice deterioration.

Bee pollen, a beehive product collected from flowers by honeybees, contains over 250 biological substances, and has attracted increasing attention as a functional food. However, commercial bee pollen products are often multifloral, and samples from different countries vary significantly. There is no universal standard for objective quality assessment of bee pollen based on its chemical composition. Here, we report metabolomic analysis of 11 bee pollen samples from Spain, China, and Australia for quality control. The characteristics of the samples depend on the sucrose, nucleoside, amino acid, and flavanol concentrations. Bee pollen samples from Spain and Australia had higher sucrose and adenosine concentrations, whereas those from China had higher trigonelline, uridine, and cytidine concentrations. Interestingly, acetic acid was only detected in samples from China. These components can be used to identify the country of origin. The obtained profiles of the samples will contribute to universal standard development for bee pollen products.

The accuracy and enrichment rate of targeted drugs largely determine the clinical diagnosis and treatment effect. Therefore, the accuracy and enrichment rate of targeted drugs should be improved. We designed a visual diagnosis and treatment system based on hierarchical targeting. It consists of multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles and a bio magnetic material. Bio-magnet mediated primary targeting can effectively improve the drug enrichment rate in the target tissue. SNF peptide/epithelial cell adhesion molecule antibody mediated targeting liver cancer stem cells (LCSCs) (secondary target) can improve the accuracy of the treatment and its outcomes. Low intensity focused ultrasound irradiation can explode nanoparticles around LCSCs, which can cause physical damage to cells. The combination of released interferon gamma and its receptor (tertiary target) can be used to initiate chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Using the optical properties of Fe3O4 and the phase transformation ability of perfluoropentane, the system can enhance photoacoustic and ultrasonic molecular imaging enabling diagnosis and treatment visualization. Targeting LCSCs can accurately provide physical, chemical, and immune treatment of Hepatocellular carcinoma, making the therapeutic effect more effective and thorough. This system may provide a new method for a more accurate visual diagnosis and treatment of tumors.

AbstractRecent enhancements in computational capacity provide an opportunity for harnessing the enormous amount of reservoir data already acquired and extracting useful information for hydrocarbon exploration, development, and production. This article reports a three-step clustering technique to determine well groups based on subsurface geological heterogeneity using feature extraction, hierarchical ensemble clustering, and spatial mapping. The first step of the presented methodology is to group the wells into different clusters based on the formation rock composition and property features extracted from well logs using the expectation maximization algorithm. The one-dimensional (1D) stacking pattern of each well log curve is expressed through a two-dimensional (2D) transformation scheme. Thus, the clustering can capture the vertical stacking patterns of well logs, which is essential for reservoir heterogeneity characterization. This base clustering process generated a feature matrix which is further grouped through the hierarchical ensemble clustering in a latent space of well logs in the second step. Through the ensemble clustering, different clustering proposals obtained from the base clustering are integrated corroboratively to reflect a comprehensive feature of all studied logs. In the third step, the spatial clustering is performed based on the ensemble results, considering the spatial distances between well locations in the target area. The results of the 2D spatial map may provide insights into the sedimentary depositional environment in terms of the lateral geological heterogeneity features. Therefore, the proposed clustering technique can present a fast geological modeling method to integrate geological heterogeneity features presented in multiple well logs, which is not yet fully utilized in traditional geomodeling approaches. The results can also support further reservoir studies, such as petrophysical modeling, reservoir modeling, and fluid flow simulation studies.

This study aimed to compare differences in the match performances between home and away games during pre- and post-COVID-19 lockdown and to identify the key factors to match success with and without spectators. The sample consisted of 1,549 basketball matches including 971 games of the 2019–2020 regular season before the COVID-19 lockdown and 578 ghost matches of the 2020–2021 regular season after the COVID-19 pandemic. The independent t-test was used to explore the differences before and after COVID-19 while univariate and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify the key factors to match success between matches with and without spectators. Our study identified that offensive rebounds were the only indicator differentiating between home and away games after the COVID-19 lockdown. Furthermore, home teams won more matches than away matches before the COVID-19 whereas home advantage had no impact on winning matches after the COVID-19. Our study suggested that crowd support may play a key role in winning games in the NBA. Furthermore, independently of the pre-and post-COVID19 pandemic, free throws made, three-point field goals made, defensive rebounds, assists, steals, personal fouls, and opponent quality were key factors differentiating between win and loss. Coaches and coaching staff can make informed decisions and well prepare for basketball match strategies.

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to test the hypothesis whether serum level of calpains could become a meaningful biomarker for diagnosis of acute lung injury (ALI) in clinical after cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) technology.Methods and resultsSeventy consecutive adults underwent cardiac surgery with CPB were included in this prospective study. Based on the American-European Consensus Criteria (AECC), these patients were divided into ALI (n = 20, 28.57%) and non-ALI (n = 50, 71.43%) groups. Serum level of calpains in terms of calpains’ activity which was expressed as relative fluorescence unit (RFU) per microliter and measured at beginning of CPB (baseline), 1 h during CPB, end of CPB as well as 1, 12, and 24 h after CPB. Difference of serum level of calpains between two groups first appeared at the end of CPB and remained different at subsequent test points. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that serum level of calpains 1 h after CPB was an independent predictor for postoperative ALI (OR 1.011, 95% CI 1.001, 1.021, p = 0.033) and correlated with a lower PaO2/FiO2 ratio in the first 2 days (The first day: r = -0.389, p < 0.001 and the second day: r = -0.320, p = 0.007) as well as longer mechanical ventilation time (r = 0.440, p < 0.001), intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS) (r = 0.419, p < 0.001) and hospital LOS (r = 0.297, p = 0.013).ConclusionElevated serum level of calpains correlate with impaired lung function and poor clinical outcomes, indicating serum level of calpains could act as a potential biomarker for postoperative ALI following CPB in adults.Clinical trial registration[https://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT05610475], identifier [NCT05610475].

ObjectiveTuberculosis outbreaks in schools are common in China. This study aimed to introduce and evaluate a new screening process to help control outbreaks.MethodsScreening information of students in three schools with tuberculosis outbreaks was collected. QuantiFERON-TB gold in-tube (QFT) results were used as the reference standard to determine the cutoff value of the tuberculin skin test (TST) for diagnosing students who need to have preventive medication.ResultsA total of 1,232 students and teachers from three different schools that all had more than three student patients with tuberculosis were included in this study. In total, 308 (25.0%) students had an induration diameter ≥10 mm; among students in a class different from the index case, the infection rate was 24.4% (264/1,084), which was lower than the rate among students in the same class (29.7%) (P = 0.157). Students in the same class as the index tuberculosis case had a much higher QFT positivity compared to those in a different class (58.1% vs. 7.7%, P < 0.0001). Diagnostic agreement between TST ≥10 mm and QFT was 36.6%. The diagnostic value reached the highest when the induration diameter of TST was ≥9 mm, with a sensitivity and specificity of 94.1% (95% CI: 89.4%–97.1%) and 27.6% (95% CI: 24.9%–30.4%), respectively. The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.664 (95% CI: 0.637–0.690, P < 0.0001).ConclusionIn tuberculosis outbreaks in schools, if there are three or more cases of students with tuberculosis in a class or if the moderate or strong TST positivity rate is much higher than the normal range in the region, attention should be paid to those with moderately positive TST results. Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) are recommended to be conducted following TST on the day of reading the results, especially among students sharing the same class with the index case. In resource-poor areas lacking IGRAs, the induration diameter of TST can be appropriately reduced from 15 to 9 mm to enhance the sensitivity of TST.

Typhoons often cause huge losses, so it is significant to accurately predict typhoon tracks. Nowadays, researchers predict typhoon tracks with the single step, while the correlation of adjacent moments data is small in long-term prediction, due to the large step of time. Moreover, recursive multi-step prediction results in the accumulated error. Therefore, this paper proposes to fuse reanalysis images at the similarly historical moment and predicted images through Laplacian Pyramid and Discrete Wavelet Transform to reduce the accumulated error. That moment is determined according to the difference in the moving angle at predicted and historical moments, the color histogram similarity between predicted images and reanalysis images at historical moments and so on. Moreover, reanalysis images are weighted cascaded and input to ConvLSTM on the basis of the correlation between reanalysis data and the moving angle and distance of the typhoon. And, the Spatial Attention and weighted calculation of memory cells are added to improve the performance of ConvLSTM. This paper predicted typhoon tracks in 12 h, 18 h, 24 h and 48 h with recursive multi-step prediction. Their MAEs were 102.14 km, 168.17 km, 243.73 km and 574.62 km, respectively, which were reduced by 1.65 km, 5.93 km, 4.6 km and 13.09 km, respectively, compared with the predicted results of the improved ConvLSTM in this paper, which proved the validity of the model.

Although food irradiation is deemed safe and endorsed by health-related organizations worldwide, consumers are reluctant to accept the technology. Yet, consumer acceptance is critical as food irradiation has significant potential for increasing the safety and availability of food globally. To communicate about food irradiation, science communicators should understand the psychology behind consumers’ decision making related to irradiated foods. Using empirical research, we developed a theoretical model and used structural equation modeling to determine how nine variables affect consumers’ behavioral intentions toward irradiated ground beef. We purchased a national quota sample from Qualtrics and surveyed N = 1102 U.S. consumers. The model explained 60.3% of the variance in consumers’ attitudes toward food irradiation and 55.4% of their behavioral intentions toward irradiated ground beef. Attitude had the largest positive, total effect on consumers’ behavioral intentions, which was followed by subjective social norm and perceived benefit. Perceived risk had the largest negative, total effect on behavioral intentions. Attitude mediated the effect of subjective social norm, perceived benefit, perceived risk, objective knowledge, and food technology neophobia. Environmental concern and health consciousness did not significantly affect behavioral intention. Science communicators should develop messaging strategies that seek to improve consumer acceptance with these factors in mind.

Calcium sulfonate complex greases (CSCG) have proven to be a sustainable alternative to lithium complex greases, which still require appropriate additives to deliver lubrication performance benefits under extreme working conditions such as heavy load, high speed, and high temperature. The anti-wear and friction reducing properties of CSCG enhanced by two-dimensional MoS2 nanosheets (2D MoS2) with a narrow lateral size and thickness distributions were evaluated by a four-ball tribometer. The results showed that the CSCG with 0.6 wt.% 2D MoS2 performs best, with a 56.4% decrease in average friction coefficient (AFC), 16.5% reduction in wear scar diameter (WSD), 14.3% decrease in surface roughness, and a 59.4% reduction in average wear depth. Combining SEM-EDS images, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectra, it is illustrated that the physical transferred film and tribo-chemical film consisting of MoS2, Fe2O3, FeSO4, CaCO3, CaO, and MoO3 were generated on the worn surface, which improves the lubrication performance of CSCG considerably.

Abstract Silo-cave is a unique human habitation form on the Loess Plateau in northern China, which consists of an excavated 6–7 m deep pit as the courtyard and cave dwellings in the surrounding four walls. This architecture has had a history of more than 7000 years, and yet such “living fossils for the history of dwellings” are now facing great crises and challenges during rapid social and economic development. In this paper, remote sensing and GIS techniques are used to comprehensively and systematically investigate the spatial distributions and morphological characteristics of silo-caves at both the macro and micro scales. The research shows that silo-cave villages are mainly distributed in economically underdeveloped areas, such as West Henan (Yuxi), South Shanxi (Jinnan), Central Shaanxi (Guanzhong), and East Gansu (Longdong). The morphological evolution patterns of typical silo-cave villages are identified, including: (1) retaining the periphery and rebuilding the inner parts of the villages, (2) retaining the inner parts and expanding the periphery of the villages, and (3) rebuilding the inner parts and expanding the periphery of the villages. These patterns are demonstrated to be influenced by many factors, including landforms, traffic conditions, economic development, population growth, and administrative division adjustment. Sustainable development of these traditional silo-cave villages relies on administrative policy and planning, people’s awareness of cultural heritage protection, culture inheritance, industrial transformation, and public services.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in severity of anxiety and depression symptoms, stress and sleeping quality after three months of mass quarantine for COVID-19 among undergraduate fresh students compared to their pre-COVID-19 measures. We used participants from the Chinese Undergraduate Cohort (CUC), a national prospective longitudinal study to examine the changes in anxiety and depression symptoms severity, stress and sleep quality after being under mass quarantine for three months. Wilcoxon matched pair signed-rank test was used to compare the lifestyle indicators. Severity of anxiety, depression symptoms, stress and sleep quality were compared with Wilcoxon signed-rank test. We used generalized estimating equation (GEE) to further quantify the change in mental health indicators and sleep quality after the COVID-19 mass quarantine compared to baseline. This study found that there was no deterioration in mental health status among Chinese new undergraduate students in 2020 after COVID-19 mass quarantine compared with the baseline measures in 2019. There was an improvement in sleep quality and anxiety symptoms. After adjusting for age, sex, exercise habit, time spent on mobile gadgets, and time spent outdoors, year 2020 was significantly associated with severity of depression symptoms in males (OR:1.52. 95%CI:1.05–2.20, p-value = 0.027). Abstract This article documents and conceptualizes a mode of reproduction of elites in a society in transition from state domination to market orientation. By focusing on China’ marketization, we explore how parents’ advantageous backgrounds have influenced the chance of their children’s attainment of certain elite positions (administrative, technocratic, or market) and whether these patterns have varied across three periods (1978–1992, 1993–2002, and 2003–2010). Using data obtained from the 2011 China Social Survey, we find that although parents’ advantageous status has a persistent effect on children’s status attainment, the reproduction of the state elite and market elite still follows two separate tracks: the children of cadres do not show significant advantage in the process of becoming entrepreneurs and managerial elites, and the children of entrepreneurial and managerial elites are less likely to join cadres. We also find that the effects of the reproduction model are still enhanced and shaped by state power in different periods. These findings demonstrate the important interplay between family background and contextual inequality and give a deeper understanding of the different trajectories of elites in contemporary China.

Objective: To explore whether all individuals with diabetes are at an increased risk of tuberculosis or whether there are high-risk groups of diabetes patients. Methods: A population-based census was conducted in China, including 27 807 individuals. Risk factors for incident tuberculosis were investigated and participants included in the study were linked to the Tuberculosis Management Information System. Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for several variables were constructed in two steps. First, the incident rate of tuberculosis in individuals with/without diabetes was compared without any stratification by high body mass index (BMI). Second, two groups stratified by BMI were compared. Results: Over 7 years of follow-up, 108 individuals progressed to tuberculosis. In the multivariable Cox regression analysis, participants with diabetes had a 2.26 higher hazard (P = 0.017) of tuberculosis when compared to participants without diabetes. However, participants with a BMI >24 kg/m2 and diagnosed with diabetes had a similar risk as overweight participants without diabetes (P = 0.953), while diabetes with a BMI

Abstract A soluble melanin pigment produced by Streptomyces sp. ZL-24 was purified and named StrSM. The elemental analysis of StrSM showed it consists of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The spectrum analysis, including ultraviolet–visible absorption spectrum, Fourier-transform infrared spectrum, and pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, indicated that StrSM might be pyomelanin. High performance liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography–mass spectra analysis of intermediate metabolite showed the presence of homogentisic acid (HGA). Moreover, the enzyme 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase, involved in HGA biosynthesis, showed high activity during melanin production. Subsequently, a tyrosinase gene (melC2) and hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase gene double mutant demonstrated StrSM is pyomelanin. In vitro bioactivity assay showed that StrSM had excellent protective capability against SH-SY5Y cell oxidative injury. To our knowledge, the results firstly provide comprehensive data on Streptomyces pyomelanin identification and a promising candidate compound to treat oxidative injury of neurocytes.

Abstract Although nanomedicine have greatly developed and human life span has been extended, we have witnessed the soared incidence of central nervous system (CNS) diseases including neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease), ischemic stroke, and brain tumors, which have severely damaged the quality of life and greatly increased the economic and social burdens. Moreover, partial small molecule drugs and almost all large molecule drugs (such as recombinant protein, therapeutic antibody, and nucleic acid) cannot cross the blood–brain barrier. Therefore, it is especially important to develop a drug delivery system that can effectively deliver therapeutic drugs to the central nervous system for the treatment of central nervous system diseases. Cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) provide a potential strategy for the transport of macromolecules through the blood–brain barrier. This study analyzed and summarized the progress of CPPs in CNS diseases from three aspects: CPPs, the conjugates of CPPs and drug, and CPPs modified nanoparticles to provide scientific basis for the application of CPPs for CNS diseases.

Abstract For the offshore wave compensation control system, its controller setting will directly affect the platform's compensation effect. In order to study the wave compensation control system and optimization strategy, we build and simulate the wave compensation control model by using particle swarm optimization (PSO) to optimize the controller's control parameters and compare the results with other intelligent algorithms. Then we compare the response errors of the wave compensation platform under different PID controllers; and compare the particle swarm algorithm's response results and the genetic algorithm to the system controller optimization. The results show that the particle swarm algorithm is 63.94% lower than the genetic algorithm overshoot, and the peak time is 0.26 s lower, the adjustment time is 1.4 s lower than the genetic algorithm. It shows that the control effect of the wave compensation control system has a great relationship with the controller's parameter selection. Meanwhile, the particle swarm optimization algorithm's optimization can set the wave compensation PID control system, and it has the optimization effect of small overshoot and fast response time. This paper proposes the application of the particle swarm algorithm to the wave compensation system. It verifies the superiority of the method after application, and provides a new research reference for the subsequent research on the wave compensation control systems.

Abstract We report on the mineralogical and chemical properties of materials investigated by the lunar rover Yutu-2, which landed on the Von Kármán crater in the pre-Nectarian South Pole–Aitken (SPA) basin. Yutu-2 carried several scientific payloads, including the Visible and Near-infrared Imaging Spectrometer (VNIS), which is used for mineral identification, offering insights into lunar evolution. We used 86 valid VNIS data for 21 lunar days, with mineral abundance obtained using the Hapke radiative transfer model and sparse unmixing algorithm and chemical compositions empirically estimated. The mineralogical properties of the materials at the Chang’E-4 (CE-4) site referred to as norite/gabbro, based on findings of mineral abundance, indicate that they may be SPA impact melt components excavated by a surrounding impact crater. We find that CE-4 materials are dominated by plagioclase and pyroxene and feature little olivine, with 50 of 86 observations showing higher LCP than HCP in pyroxene. In view of the effects of space weathering, olivine content may be underestimated, with FeO and TiO2 content estimated using the maturity-corrected method. Estimates of chemical content are 7.42–18.82 wt% FeO and 1.48–2.1 wt% TiO2, with a low-medium Mg number (Mg # ~ 55). Olivine-rich materials are not present at the CE-4 landing site, based on the low-medium Mg #. Multi-origin materials at the CE-4 landing site were analyzed with regard to concentrations of FeO and TiO2 content, supporting our conclusion that the materials at CE-4 do not have a single source but rather are likely a mixture of SPA impact melt components excavated by surrounding impact crater and volcanic product ejecta.

Root-associated compartments, including the rhizosphere, rhizoplane, and endosphere, live with diverse microbial communities which profoundly affect plant growth and health. However, a systematic understanding of the microbiome assembly across the rhizosphere, rhizoplane, and endosphere under pathogen invasion remains elusive. Using 16S high-throughput sequencing, we studied how bacterial wilt disease affected the variation and assembly of the three continuous root-associated microbiomes of tobacco. The results indicated that microorganisms were gradually filtered from the rhizosphere to the endosphere. With the pathogen invasion, the rhizosphere, rhizoplane and endosphere microbiomes selected and recruited different beneficial bacterial taxa. Some recruited bacteria were also identified as keystone members in networks (i.e., Bosea in the endosphere). The microbiomes of endosphere and rhizoplane were more sensitive to plant disease than the rhizosphere microbiome. Still, response strategies of the rhizoplane and endosphere to disease were obviously different. Microbial networks of the rhizoplane became complex in diseased samples and genes involved in sporulation formation and cell cycle were enriched. However, microbial networks of the diseased endosphere were disrupted, and functional genes related to nitrogen utilization and chemotaxis were significantly increased, indicating the importance of nitrogen resources supply of plants for the endosphere microbiome under pathogen invasion. Our results provide novel insights for understanding the different responses of the root-associated microbiomes to plant disease.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) regulate many biological processes in plants, including defense against pathogens and herbivores. Recently, many small ORFs embedded in lncRNAs have been identified to encode biologically functional peptides (small ORF-encoded peptides [SEPs]) in many species. However, it is unknown whether lncRNAs mediate defense against herbivore attack and whether there are novel functional SEPs for these lncRNAs. By sequencing Spodoptera litura-treated leaves at six time-points in Nicotiana tabacum, 22,436 lncRNAs were identified, of which 787 were differentially expressed. Using a comprehensive mass spectrometry (MS) pipeline, 302 novel SEPs derived from 115 tobacco lncRNAs were identified. Moreover, 61 SEPs showed differential expression after S. litura attack. Importantly, several of these peptides were characterized through 3D structure prediction, subcellular localization validation by laser confocal microscopy, and western blotting. Subsequent bioinformatic analysis revealed some specific chemical and physical properties of these novel SEPs, which probably represent the largest number of SEPs identified in plants to date. Our study not only identifies potential lncRNA regulators of plant response to herbivore attack but also serves as a valuable resource for the functional characterization of SEP-encoding lncRNAs.

Piedmont zones have been witnessing intensive human activities since ancient times. However, it remains unclear when it comes to the environmental mechanism for early humans exploiting piedmont zones. Here we present a case study about the interactions between early human activities and landscape evolution in the piedmont of Taihang Mountain, an area with prominent ecological and cultural significance in Chinese history. Based on chronological and pollen analyses, we reconstruct the regional landscape evolution in the Fengtougang (FTG) site of southern Taihang Mountain during the Holocene. The results show that the area has been dominated by terrestrial plants since the late Longshan culture (4000 BP), including a large number of Pinus, Artemisia, Spiraea, and Gramineae, a few Cattails, and some other aquatic herbs. During the early history (4000-2000 BP), there is a combination of Pinus, Artemisia, Spiraea, Compositae, and Selaginella Chinensis, with a few aquatic plants. Since the late history (500 BP), the Chinese selaginella, Pinus, Selaginella, and Sedge families dominate, with no aquatic plant pollen found. Combining the detailed geoarchaeological survey, grain size analysis, and magnetic susceptibility analysis, we demonstrate that there should be a landscape of extensive floodplain during the early-middle Holocene (10000-4000 BP). During the late Longshan culture (about 4000 BP), the study area should be dominated by a landscape of sparse forest grassland with interlacing rivers and lakes. With river downcutting and watercourse fixation since the late Longshan culture, the flooded area massively shrinks, providing suitable habitat for human settlement. From then on, human activities begin to move to the study area on a large scale, followed by continuous cultural development and thriving early civilization.

In recent years, the impact of lipotoxicity on male fertility has received extensive attention, especially on Sertoli cells (SCs). In SCs, energy metabolism is important as disorders of energy metabolism result in infertility eventually. However, the underlying mechanism of lipotoxicity on energy metabolism in SCs remains unknown. Advances in high-throughput metabolomics and lipidomics measurement platforms provide powerful tools to gain insights into complex biological systems. Here, we aimed to explore the potential molecular mechanisms of palmitic acid (PA) regulating energy metabolism in SCs based on metabolomics and lipidomics. The results showed that glucose metabolism-related metabolites were not significantly changed, which suggested that PA treatment had little effect on glucose metabolism and may not influence the normal energy supply from SCs to germ cells. However, fatty acid β-oxidation was inhibited according to accumulation of medium- and long-chain acylcarnitines in cells. In addition, the pool of amino acids and the levels of most individual amino acids involved in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle were not changed after PA treatment in SCs. Moreover, PA treatment of SCs significantly altered the lipidome, including significant decreases in cardiolipin and glycolipids as well as remarkable increases in ceramide and lysophospholipids, which indicated that mitochondrial function was affected and apoptosis was triggered. The increased apoptosis rate of SCs was verified by elevated protein expression levels of Cleaved Caspase-3 and Bax as well as decreased Bcl-2 protein expression level. Together, these findings indicated that PA may result in mitochondrial dysfunction and increased apoptosis by inhibiting fatty acid β-oxidation of SCs.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, a tuberculosis outbreak occurred in a university in eastern China, with 4,488 students and 421 staff on the campus. A 19-year-old student was diagnosed in August 2019. Later, the first round of screening was initiated among close contacts, but no active cases were found. Till September 2020, four rounds of screening were performed. Four rounds of screening were conducted on September 9, November 8, November 22-25 in 2019 and September 2020, with 0, 5, 0 and 43 cases identified, respectively. A total of 66 active tuberculosis were found in the same university, including 4 sputum culture-positive and 7 sputum smear-positive. The total attack rate of active tuberculosis was 1.34% (66/4909). The whole-genome sequencing showed that the isolates belonged to the same L2 sub-specie and were sensitive to all tested antituberculosis drugs. Delay detection, diagnosis and report of cases were the major cause of this university tuberculosis epidemic. More attention should be paid to the asymptomatic students in the index class. After the occurrence of tuberculosis cases in schools, multiple rounds of screening should be carried out, and preventive therapy should be applied in a timely manner.

Environmental sanitation of maternal contact during pregnancy is extremely important for the development of different fetal tissues and organs. In particular, during early pregnancy, any adverse exposure may cause abnormal fetal growth or inhibit the development of embryogenic organs. The potential risks of phthalate exposure, which affects the development of humans and animals, are becoming a serious concern worldwide. However, the specific molecular mechanism of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)-induced cardiotoxicity in fetal mice remains unclear. In this study, animal models of DEHP gavage at concentrations of 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg/day within 8.5–18.5 days of pregnancy were established. The cell proliferation, survival, and apoptosis rates were evaluated using CCK8, EdU, TUNEL and flow cytometry. The molecular mechanism was assessed via transcriptome sequencing, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot analysis. In vivo, DEHP increased apoptosis, decreased Ki67 and CD31 expression, reduced heart weight and area, slowed down myocardial sarcomere development, and caused cardiac septal defect in fetal mice heart. Transcriptome sequencing showed that DEHP decreased NRG1 expression and downregulated the ErbB2/ErbB4-PI3K/AKT signaling pathway-related target genes. In vitro, primary cardiomyocytes were cultured with DEHP at a concentration of 150 μg/mL combined with ErbB inhibitor (AG1478, 10 μmol/L) and/or NRG1 protein (100 ng/mL) for 72 h. After DEHP intervention, the expression of NRG1 and the phosphorylation level of ErbB2, ErbB4, PI3K, and AKT decreased, and the apoptosis-related protein levels increased. Moreover, the apoptosis rate increased. After adding exogenous NRG1, the phosphorylation level of the NRG1/ERbB2/ERbB4-PI3K/AKT pathway increased, and the apoptosis-related protein levels decreased. Further, the apoptosis rate reduced. Interestingly, after exposure to DEHP and AG1478 + NRG1, the anti-apoptotic effect of NRG1 and cardiomyocyte proliferation decreased by inhibiting the NRG1/ERbB2/ERbB4-PI3K/AKT pathway. Hence, the NRG1-dependent regulation of the ERbB2/ERbB4-PI3K/AKT signaling pathway may be a key mechanism of DEHP-induced myocardial cytotoxicity.

To provide basic drift-ice parameters for new-energy structures in ice-infested nearshore waters, an estimation method of the design drift-ice concentration and floe area was established. A total of 700 satellite images in winters from 2010 to 2021 were used to obtain the drift-ice concentration and floe area from 26 sites in the Bohai Sea. The floe area with 90% cumulative probability was selected as the characteristic floe area in each satellite image. Furthermore, the water temperature threshold ranging from −1.6 °C to −0.5 °C was adopted by considering the drift-ice freezing/melting states because of different salinity values in nearshore waters. The upper limit values of the ice concentration and characteristic floe area at the lowest water temperature of −1.6 °C were finally used as the design drift-ice indexes. The maximum design ice concentrations (floe area) in the Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, and Laizhou Bay were 96% (0.43 km2), 91% (0.39 km2), and 87% (0.29 km2), respectively. The design ice concentration at the bay bottom was higher than that near the mouth. The design floe area in the Liaodong Bay and Bohai Bay increased with latitudes, but the trend was opposite in the Laizhou Bay. The method developed in the current study has universal applicability, which can be extended to other ice-cover waters and specific structure designs by adjusting the cumulative probability threshold and the water temperature threshold.
