In nature, $\alpha$-quartz crystals frequently form contact twins - two adjacent crystals with the same chemical structure but different crystallographic orientation, sharing a common lattice plane. As $\alpha$-quartz crystallises in a chiral space group, such twinning can occur between enantiomorphs with the same handedness or with opposite handedness. Here, we use first-principle methods to investigate the effect of twinning and chirality on the bulk and surface phonon spectra, as well as on the topological properties of phonons in $\alpha$-quartz. We demonstrate that, even though the dispersion appears identical for all twins along all high-symmetry lines and at all high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone, the dispersions can be distinct at generic momenta for some twin structures. Furthermore, when the twinning occurs between different enantiomorphs, the charges of all Weyl nodal points flip, which leads to mirror symmetric isofrequency contours of the surface arcs. The privacy and security of face data on social media are facing unprecedented challenges as it is vulnerable to unauthorized access and identification. A common practice for solving this problem is to modify the original data so that it could be protected from being recognized by malicious face recognition (FR) systems. However, such ``adversarial examples'' obtained by existing methods usually suffer from low transferability and poor image quality, which severely limits the application of these methods in real-world scenarios. In this paper, we propose a 3D-Aware Adversarial Makeup Generation GAN (3DAM-GAN). which aims to improve the quality and transferability of synthetic makeup for identity information concealing. Specifically, a UV-based generator consisting of a novel Makeup Adjustment Module (MAM) and Makeup Transfer Module (MTM) is designed to render realistic and robust makeup with the aid of symmetric characteristics of human faces. Moreover, a makeup attack mechanism with an ensemble training strategy is proposed to boost the transferability of black-box models. Extensive experiment results on several benchmark datasets demonstrate that 3DAM-GAN could effectively protect faces against various FR models, including both publicly available state-of-the-art models and commercial face verification APIs, such as Face++, Baidu and Aliyun., Comment: Accepted by TPAMI 2023

As an advanced imaging system, the magneto-optical-electric joint-measurement scanning imaging system (MOEJSI) brings spectroscopic techniques with unmatched spatial resolution to very low temperature, high magnetic field and high electric field measurements. It was developed for investigating the magnetic and ferroelectric properties and their mutual control through magneto-optical-electric joint-measurements, besides Raman and photoluminescence features. The Stone-Wales defect is a well-known and significant defective structure in carbon materials, impacting their mechanical, chemical, and electronic properties. Recently, a novel metal-carbon nanomaterial named Volleyballene has been discovered, characterized by a C-C bond bridging two carbon pentagons. Using first-principles calculations, a stable Stone-Wales-defective counterpart of Volleyballene, exhibiting $T_h$ symmetry, has been proposed by rotating the C-C bond by 90${\deg}$. Although its binding energy per atom is slightly higher than Volleyballene (${\Delta}E_b$ = 0.009 eV/atom), implying marginally lower structural stability, it can maintain its bond structure until the effective temperature reaches about 1538.56 K, indicating greater thermodynamic stability. Additionally, its highest vibration frequency is 1346.2 cm$^{-1}$, indicating strong chemical bond strength. A theoretical analysis of the Sc$_{20}$C$_{60}$+Sc$_{20}$C$_{60}$ binary systems highlights that the stable building block may be applied in potential nano-assembly., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

We discover three new weak pulse components in two known pulsars, one in PSR J0304+1932 and two in PSR J1518+4904. These components are emitted about half way between the main emission beam and the interpulse beam (beam from the opposite pole). They are separated from their main pulse peak by $99^{\circ}\pm{3}^{\circ}$ for J0304+1932, $123^{\circ}.6\pm{0^{\circ}.7}$ (leading) and $93^{^{\circ}}\pm 0^{\circ}.4$ (trailing) for J1518+4904, respectively. Their peak-intensity ratios to main pulses are: $\sim$ 0.06% for J0304+1932, $\sim$ 0.17% and $\sim$ 0.83% for J1518+4904. We also analyzed flux fluctuation and profile variation of the emissions for two pulsars. The results show correlations between the weak pulses and their main pulses, indicating that these emissions come from the same pole. We estimated the emission altitude of these weak pulses and derived a height of about half of the pulsar's light-cylinder radius. In this paper, we reconsider the mixed system of BSs with wormholes at their center which performed by complex scalar field and phantom field and study a whole new condition about the potential. Both the symmetric and asymmetric solutions in the two asymptotically flat regions are obtained by using numerical method and we mainly explore the change of the results by varying the parameters of throats and potential. In ground state, we find there are multiple solutions at certain setting of parameters and with the increase of $\eta_0$ or decrease of $c$, the results gradually become single-valued functions and these two variables have similar influence to the curve shape of mass $M$ and charge $Q$, furthermore, the asymmetric solutions can turn into the solutions of symmetry at some frequency $\omega$ in certain $\eta_0$ and $c$. However, when it comes to excited state, the properties of solutions of symmetry is similar to the ground state while asymmetrical results exhibit altered characteristics. Transformers have revolutionized almost all natural language processing (NLP) tasks but suffer from memory and computational complexity that scales quadratically with sequence length. In contrast, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) exhibit linear scaling in memory and computational requirements but struggle to match the same performance as Transformers due to limitations in parallelization and scalability. We propose a novel model architecture, Receptance Weighted Key Value (RWKV), that combines the efficient parallelizable training of transformers with the efficient inference of RNNs. Our approach leverages a linear attention mechanism and allows us to formulate the model as either a Transformer or an RNN, thus parallelizing computations during training and maintains constant computational and memory complexity during inference. We scale our models as large as 14 billion parameters, by far the largest dense RNN ever trained, and find RWKV performs on par with similarly sized Transformers, suggesting future work can leverage this architecture to create more efficient models. This work presents a significant step towards reconciling trade-offs between computational efficiency and model performance in sequence processing tasks.

In this paper, we evaluate the accuracy of the Hermitian form of the downfolding procedure utilizing the double unitary coupled cluster Ansatz (DUCC) on the H6 and H8 benchmark systems. The computational infrastructure employs the occupation-number-representation codes to construct the matrix representation of arbitrary second-quantized operators, enabling the exact representation of exponentials of various operators. The tests utilize external excitations estimated from standard single-reference coupled cluster methods (SR-CC) to demonstrate that higher-rank SR-CC external amplitudes were necessary to describe the energies in the strongly correlated regime adequately. We show that this approach can offset problems of the corresponding SR-CC theories associated with losing the variational character of corresponding energies.

In this paper, we revisit the model of bosonic matter in the form of a free complex scalar field with a nontrivial wormhole spacetime topology supported by a free phantom field. We obtain a new type of boson star with wormhole solutions, in which the complex scalar field possess full parity-odd symmetry with respect to the two asymptotically flat spacetime regions. When the size of the throat is small, The behavior of boson stars with wormhole approaches that of boson stars. When the size of the throat is intermediate, the typical spiraling dependence of the mass and the particle number on the frequency of the boson stars is replaced by a loop structure. However, as the size becomes relatively large, the loop structure will also disappear. In particular, The complex scalar field could form two boson stars with opposite phase differences with respect to the two spacetime regions in the limit of vanishing throat size. Detecting maliciously falsified facial images and videos has attracted extensive attention from digital-forensics and computer-vision communities. An important topic in manipulation detection is the localization of the fake regions. Previous work related to forgery detection mostly focuses on the entire faces. However, recent forgery methods have developed to edit important facial components while maintaining others unchanged. This drives us to not only focus on the forgery detection but also fine-grained falsified region segmentation. In this paper, we propose a collaborative feature learning approach to simultaneously detect manipulation and segment the falsified components. With the collaborative manner, detection and segmentation can boost each other efficiently. To enable our study of forgery detection and segmentation, we build a facial forgery dataset consisting of both entire and partial face forgeries with their pixel-level manipulation ground-truth. Experiment results have justified the mutual promotion between forgery detection and manipulated region segmentation. The overall performance of the proposed approach is better than the state-of-the-art detection or segmentation approaches. The visualization results have shown that our proposed model always captures the artifacts on facial regions, which is more reasonable.

The deep neural networks (DNNs) have freed the synthetic aperture radar automatic target recognition (SAR ATR) from expertise-based feature designing and demonstrated superiority over conventional solutions. There has been shown the unique deficiency of ground vehicle benchmarks in shapes of strong background correlation results in DNNs overfitting the clutter and being non-robust to unfamiliar surroundings. However, the gap between fixed background model training and varying background application remains underexplored. Inspired by contrastive learning, this letter proposes a solution called Contrastive Feature Alignment (CFA) aiming to learn invariant representation for robust recognition. The proposed method contributes a mixed clutter variants generation strategy and a new inference branch equipped with channel-weighted mean square error (CWMSE) loss for invariant representation learning. In specific, the generation strategy is delicately designed to better attract clutter-sensitive deviation in feature space. The CWMSE loss is further devised to better contrast this deviation and align the deep features activated by the original images and corresponding clutter variants. The proposed CFA combines both classification and CWMSE losses to train the model jointly, which allows for the progressive learning of invariant target representation. Extensive evaluations on the MSTAR dataset and six DNN models prove the effectiveness of our proposal. The results demonstrated that the CFA-trained models are capable of recognizing targets among unfamiliar surroundings that are not included in the dataset, and are robust to varying signal-to-clutter ratios., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In this manuscript, we provide an overview of the recent developments of the coupled cluster (CC) downfolding methods, where the ground-state problem of a quantum system is represented through effective/downfolded Hamiltonians defined using active spaces. All CC downfolding techniques discussed here are derived from a single-reference exponential ansatz for the ground-state problem. We discuss several extensions of the non-Hermitian and Hermitian downfolding approaches to the time domain and the so-called quantum flows. We emphasize the important role of downfolding formalisms in transitioning chemical applications from noisy quantum devices to scalable and error-corrected quantum computers.

Recently, many works have been proposed to utilize the neural radiance field for novel view synthesis of human performers. However, most of these methods require hours of training, making them difficult for practical use. To address this challenging problem, we propose IntrinsicNGP, which can train from scratch and achieve high-fidelity results in few minutes with videos of a human performer. To achieve this target, we introduce a continuous and optimizable intrinsic coordinate rather than the original explicit Euclidean coordinate in the hash encoding module of instant-NGP. With this novel intrinsic coordinate, IntrinsicNGP can aggregate inter-frame information for dynamic objects with the help of proxy geometry shapes. Moreover, the results trained with the given rough geometry shapes can be further refined with an optimizable offset field based on the intrinsic coordinate.Extensive experimental results on several datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of IntrinsicNGP. Matters Arising in Nature on "Evidence for a single layer van der Waals multiferroic". The search for two dimensional multiferroic materials is an exciting yet challenging endeavor. Recently, Song reported the exciting discovery of type II multiferroic order in an antiferromagnetic (AFM) NiI2 single layer and concluded the ferroelectric (FE) polarization induced by a helical magnetic order1. Their finding was presented from all optical experimental evidence, based on the methods of second harmonic generation (SHG) and linear dichroism (LD). However, the all optical characterizations cannot serve as unanimous evidence of the FE existence, particularly in conjunction with magnetic orders in a single layer NiI2 multiferroic. GAN inversion has been exploited in many face manipulation tasks, but 2D GANs often fail to generate multi-view 3D consistent images. The encoders designed for 2D GANs are not able to provide sufficient 3D information for the inversion and editing. Therefore, 3D-aware GAN inversion is proposed to increase the 3D editing capability of GANs. However, the 3D-aware GAN inversion remains under-explored. To tackle this problem, we propose a 3D-aware (3Da) encoder for GAN inversion and face editing based on the powerful StyleNeRF model. Our proposed 3Da encoder combines a parametric 3D face model with a learnable detail representation model to generate geometry, texture and view direction codes. For more flexible face manipulation, we then design a dual-branch StyleFlow module to transfer the StyleNeRF codes with disentangled geometry and texture flows. Extensive experiments demonstrate that we realize 3D consistent face manipulation in both facial attribute editing and texture transfer. Deep-learning based face-swap videos, also known as deep fakes, are becoming more and more realistic and deceiving. The malicious usage of these face-swap videos has caused wide concerns. The research community has been focusing on the automatic detection of these fake videos, but the assessment of their visual realism, as perceived by human eyes, is still an unexplored dimension. Visual realism assessment, or VRA, is essential for assessing the potential impact that may be brought by a specific face-swap video, and it is also important as a quality assessment metric to compare different face-swap methods. In this paper, we make a small step towards this new VRA direction by building a benchmark for evaluating the effectiveness of different automatic VRA models, which range from using traditional hand-crafted features to different kinds of deep-learning features. The evaluations are based on a recent competition dataset named DFGC 2022, which contains 1400 diverse face-swap videos that are annotated with Mean Opinion Scores (MOS) on visual realism. Comprehensive experiment results using 11 models and 3 protocols are shown and discussed. We demonstrate the feasibility of devising effective VRA models for assessing face-swap videos and methods. We present a hybrid quantum system composed of a magnetic vortex and a nanomechanical resonator. We show that the gyrotropic mode of the vortex can coherently couple to the quantized mechanical motion of the resonator through magnetic interaction. Benefiting from the topologically protected properties and the low damping of vortices, as well as the excellent coherent features of nanomechanical resonators, the proposed system can achieve strong coupling and even the ultrastrong coupling regime by choosing appropriate parameters. In combination with other quantum systems, such as a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center, coherent state transfer between the vortex excitation and the spin can be realized. Coherent tripartite interactions among degrees of freedom of completely different nature are instrumental for quantum information and simulation technologies, but they are generally difficult to realize and remain largely unexplored. Here, we predict a tripartite coupling mechanism in a hybrid setup comprising a single NV center and a micromagnet. We propose to realize direct and strong tripartite interactions among single NV spins, magnons and phonons via modulating the relative motion between the NV center and the micromagnet. Specifically, by introducing a parametric drive (two-phonon drive) to modulate the mechanical motion (such as the center-of-mass motion of a NV spin in diamond trapped in an electrical trap or a levitated micromagnet in a magnetic trap), we can obtain a tunable and strong spin-magnon-phonon coupling at the single quantum level, with up to two orders of magnitude enhancement for the tripartite coupling strength. This enables, for example, tripartite entanglement among solid-state spins, magnons, and mechanical motions in quantum spin-magnonics-mechanics with realistic experimental parameters. This protocol can be readily implemented with the well-developed techniques in ion traps or magnetic traps, and could pave the way for general applications in quantum simulations and information processing based on directly and strongly coupled tripartite systems., Comment: To appear in PRL, 9 pages, 4 figures

One of the commonly used chemical-inspired approaches in variational quantum computing is the unitary coupled-cluster (UCC) ansatze. Despite being a systematic way of approaching the exact limit, the number of parameters in the standard UCC ansatze exhibits unfavorable scaling with respect to the system size, hindering its practical use on near-term quantum devices. Efforts have been taken to propose some variants of UCC ansatze with better scaling. In this paper we explore the parameter redundancy in the preparation of unitary coupled-cluster singles and doubles (UCCSD) ansatze employing spin-adapted formulation, small amplitude filtration, and entropy-based orbital selection approaches. Numerical results of using our approach on some small molecules have exhibited a significant cost reduction in the number of parameters to be optimized and in the time to convergence compared with conventional UCCSD-VQE simulations. We also discuss the potential application of some machine learning techniques in further exploring the parameter redundancy, providing a possible direction for future studies.

Optical microcavity enhanced light-matter interaction offers a powerful tool to develop fast and precise sensing techniques, spurring applications in the detection of biochemical targets ranging from cells, nanoparticles, and large molecules. However, the intrinsic inertness of such pristine microresonators limits their spread in new fields such as gas detection. Here, a functionalized microlaser sensor is realized by depositing graphene in an erbium-doped over-modal microsphere. By using a 980 nm pump, multiple laser lines excited in different mode families of the microresonator are co-generated in a single device. The interference between these splitting mode lasers produce beat notes in the electrical domain (0.2-1.1 MHz) with sub-kHz accuracy, thanks to the graphene-induced intracavity backward scattering. This allows for multispecies gas identification from a mixture, and ultrasensitive gas detection down to individual molecule.

We present a use case of practical utility of quantum computing by employing a quantum computer in the investigation of the linear H$_4$ molecule as a simple model to comply with the requirements of singlet fission. We leverage a series of independent strategies to bring down the overall cost of the quantum computations, namely 1) tapering off qubits in order to reduce the size of the relevant Hilbert space; 2) measurement optimization via rotations to eigenbases shared by groups of qubit-wise commuting (QWC) Pauli strings; 3) parallel execution of multiple state preparation + measurement operations, implementing quantum circuits onto all 20 qubits available in the Quantinuum H1-1 quantum hardware. We report results that satisfy the energetic prerequisites of singlet fission and which are in excellent agreement with the exact transition energies (for the chosen one-particle basis), and much superior to classical methods deemed computationally tractable for singlet fission candidates, Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We report the implementation of the real-time equation-of-motion coupled-cluster (RT-EOM-CC) cumulant Green's function method [J. Chem. Phys. 152, 174113 (2020)] within the Tensor Algebra for Many-body Methods (TAMM) infrastructure. TAMM is a massively parallel heterogeneous tensor library designed for utilizing forthcoming exascale computing resources. The two-body electron repulsion matrix elements are Cholesky-decomposed, and we imposed spin-explicit forms of the various operators when evaluating the tensor contractions. Unlike our previous real algebra Tensor Contraction Engine (TCE) implementation, the TAMM implementation supports fully complex algebra. The RT-EOM-CC singles (S) and doubles (D) time-dependent amplitudes are propagated using a first-order Adams--Moulton method. This new implementation shows excellent scalability tested up to 500 GPUs using the Zn-porphyrin molecule with 655 basis functions, with parallel efficiencies above 90\% up to 400 GPUs. The TAMM RT-EOM-CCSD was used to study core photo-emission spectra in the formaldehyde and ethyl trifluoroacetate (ESCA) molecules. Simulations of the latter involve as many as 71 occupied and 649 virtual orbitals. The relative quasiparticle ionization energies and overall spectral functions agree well with available experimental results.
