102. Syntactic Creativity Errors in Children's Wh-Questions

- Abstract
Previous work has reported that children creatively make syntactic errors that are ungrammatical in their target language, but are grammatical in another language. One of the most well-known examples is "medial wh-question" errors in English-speaking children's wh-questions (e.g., "What do you think who the cat chased?" from Thornton, 1990). The evidence for this non-target-like structure in both production and comprehension has been taken to support the existence of innate, syntactic parameters that define all possible grammatical variation, which serve as a top-down constraint guiding children's language acquisition process. The present study reports new story-based production and comprehension experiments that challenge this interpretation. While we replicated previous observations of medial wh-question errors in children's sentence production (Experiment 1), we saw a reduction in evidence indicating that English-speaking children assign interpretations that conform to the medial wh-question pattern (Experiment 2). Crucially, we found no correlation between production and comprehension errors (Experiment 3). We suggest that these errors are the result of children's immature sentence production mechanisms rather than immature grammatical knowledge.

BACKGROUND:Anti-human leukocyte antigen donor-specific antibodies (anti-HLA DSAs) are recognized as a major barrier to patients' access to organ transplantation and the major cause of graft failure. The capacity of circulating anti-HLA DSAs to activate complement has been suggested as a potential biomarker for optimizing graft allocation and improving the rate of successful transplantations. METHODS AND FINDINGS:To address the clinical relevance of complement-activating anti-HLA DSAs across all solid organ transplant patients, we performed a meta-analysis of their association with transplant outcome through a systematic review, from inception to January 31, 2018. The primary outcome was allograft loss, and the secondary outcome was allograft rejection. A comprehensive search strategy was conducted through several databases (Medline, Embase, Cochrane, and Scopus). A total of 5,861 eligible citations were identified. A total of 37 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Studies reported on 7,936 patients, including kidney (n = 5,991), liver (n = 1,459), heart (n = 370), and lung recipients (n = 116). Solid organ transplant recipients with circulating complement-activating anti-HLA DSAs experienced an increased risk of allograft loss (pooled HR 3.09; 95% CI 2.55-3.74, P = 0.001; I2 = 29.3%), and allograft rejection (pooled HR 3.75; 95% CI: 2.05-6.87, P = 0.001; I2 = 69.8%) compared to patients without complement-activating anti-HLA DSAs. The association between circulating complement-activating anti-HLA DSAs and allograft failure was consistent across all subgroups and sensitivity analyses. Limitations of the study are the observational and retrospective design of almost all included studies, the higher proportion of kidney recipients compared to other solid organ transplant recipients, and the inclusion of fewer studies investigating allograft rejection. CONCLUSIONS:In this study, we found that circulating complement-activating anti-HLA DSAs had a significant deleterious impact on solid organ transplant survival and risk of rejection. The detection of complement-activating anti-HLA DSAs may add value at an individual patient level for noninvasive biomarker-guided risk stratification. - Abstract
Background:End-stage renal failure occurs in a substantial number of patients having received a nonrenal transplantation (NRT), for whom a kidney transplantation is needed. The medical strategy regarding the use of immunosuppression (IS) for a kidney graft in patients after an NRT is not well established. The prekidney grafts long-term IS advocates for a mild induction, such as using anti-IL-2R antibodies, whereas addition of new incompatibilities and anti-HLA preimmunization may suggest using stronger IS such as induction by polyclonal antithymocyte globulins (ATG). Methods:We performed Cox multivariate and propensity score analysis of our validated transplant database to study the impact of the type of induction therapy on kidney graft survival of recipients of a kidney graft after NRT. Results:We report here that kidney transplantation after NRT treated with an ATG induction has a poorer outcome (kidney and recipient survival) than that with an anti-IL-2R induction. After accounting for potential baseline differences with a multivariate Cox model, or by adjusting on a propensity score, we found that despite patients having received ATG cumulate more risk factors, ATG appears independently involved. As animal-derived biotherapeutics induce antiglycan antibodies and particularly anti-N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) IgGs which may activate endothelial cells in patients and grafts, we also investigated the magnitude and the nature of the anti-Neu5Gc elicited by the induction and showed that induction was associated with a shift in anti-Neu5Gc IgG repertoire. Possible reasons and mechanisms of a deleterious ATG usage in these patients are discussed. Conclusions:Our study suggests that ATG induction after a kidney transplantation in recipients already under maintenance IS for a NRT should be used cautiously.

We study the static and dynamic interaction between a horizontal cylindrical nano-probe and a thin liquid film. The effects of the physical and geometrical parameters, with a special focus on the film thickness, the probe speed, and the distance between the probe and the free surface are analyzed. Deformation profiles have been computed numerically from a Reynolds lubrication equation, coupled to a modified Young-Laplace equation, which takes into account the probe/liquid and the liquid/substrate non-retarded van der Waals interactions. We have found that the film thickness and the probe speed have a significant effect on the threshold separation distance below which the jump-to-contact instability is triggered. These results encourage the use of horizontal cylindrical nano-probes to scan thin liquid films, in order to determine either the physical or geometrical properties of the latter, through the measurement of interaction forces.

Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds (HSLAG) are a natural generalization of special Lagrangian manifolds (SLAG). The latter only make sense on Calabi-Yau manifolds whereas the former are defined for any almost K\"ahler manifold. Special Lagrangians, and, more specificaly, fibrations by special Lagrangians play an important role in the context of the geometric mirror symmetry conjecture. However, these objects are rather scarce in nature. On the contrary, we show that HSLAG submanifolds, or fibrations, arise quite often. Many examples of HSLAG fibrations are provided by toric K\"ah-ler geometry. In this paper, we obtain a large class of examples by deforming the toric metrics into non toric almost K\"ahler metrics, together with HSLAG submanifolds.

The purpose of this paper is to study reducibility properties in Sasakian geometry. First we give the Sasaki version of the de Rham Decomposition Theorem; however, we need a mild technical assumption on the Sasaki automorphism group which includes the toric case. Next we introduce the concept of {\it cone reducible} and consider $S^3$ bundles over a smooth projective algebraic variety where we give a classification result concerning contact structures admitting the action of a 2-torus of Reeb type. In particular, we can classify all such Sasakian structures up to contact isotopy on $S^3$ bundles over a Riemann surface of genus greater than zero. Ethanol is the most common drug of abuse. It exerts its behavioral effects by acting on widespread neural circuits; however, its impact on glial cells is less understood. We show that Drosophila perineurial glia are critical for ethanol tolerance, a simple form of behavioral plasticity. The perineurial glia form the continuous outer cellular layer of the blood-brain barrier and are the interface between the brain and the circulation. Ethanol tolerance development requires the A kinase anchoring protein Akap200 specifically in perineurial glia. Akap200 tightly coordinates protein kinase A, actin, and calcium signaling at the membrane to control tolerance. Furthermore, ethanol causes a structural remodeling of the actin cytoskeleton and perineurial membrane topology in an Akap200-dependent manner, without disrupting classical barrier functions. Our findings reveal an active molecular signaling process in the cells at the blood-brain interface that permits a form of behavioral plasticity induced by ethanol.

Childhood interstitial lung diseases (chILD) are rare and usually severe disorders. Among them, very rare cases of surfactant protein (SP)-B deficiencies have been reported so far and are usually associated with fatal forms of chILD. The RespiRare network allows the collection of precise phenotypic and genotypic information. This study that reports a series of 11 SP-B-deficient patients underscores two key observations: patients with severe loss-of-function variants associated with SP-B complete deficiency presented symptoms at birth and died at a median age of 1 month; and extremely rare cases of hypomorphic variants with partially preserved SP-B function may allow survival.

Calcium coordination solids were synthesized and evaluated for delivery of olsalazine (H4 olz), an anti-inflammatory compound used for treatment of ulcerative colitis. The materials include one-dimensional Ca(H2 olz)⋅4 H2 O chains, two-dimensional Ca(H2 olz)⋅2 H2 O sheets, and a three-dimensional metal-organic framework Ca(H2 olz)⋅2DMF (DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide). The framework undergoes structural changes in response to solvent, forming a dense Ca(H2 olz) phase when exposed to aqueous HCl. The compounds Ca(H2 olz)⋅x H2 O (x=0, 2, 4) were each pressed into pellets and exposed to simulated gastrointestinal fluids to mimic the passage of a pill from the acidic stomach to the pH-neutral intestines. All three calcium materials exhibited a delayed release of olsalazine relative to Na2 (H2 olz), the commercial formulation, illustrating how formulation of a drug within an extended coordination solid can serve to tune its solubility and performance.

Chronic cassava-derived cyanide poisoning is associated with the appearance of konzo, a tropical spastic paraparesis due to selective upper motor neuron damage. Whether the disease is caused by a direct action of cyanide or its metabolites is still an open question. This preliminary study assessed the neurotoxic effects of thiocyanate (SCN) and cyanate (OCN), two cyanide metabolites hypothesized to be plausible toxic agents in konzo.

Two young walruses, recently transferred to the Vancouver Aquarium, presented with severe abrasion to their tusks. The walruses were sedated, and clinical examination and radiographs of the tusks showed that the pulp chambers were not exposed. The tips of the tusks were then prepared to receive metal crowns. Vinyl polysiloxane impressions were obtained and sent to the laboratory for chrome-nickel crown fabrication. Moreover, when this '' stationary '' measure is regular and bounded, we prove its uniqueness and show that, for any non negative initial datum in $L^{\infty} (\Omega) \cap L^1 (\Omega)$, the solution of the Cauchy problem converges to this limit measure in $L^2 (\Omega)$. We also construct an example for which the measure is singular and non-unique, and investigate numerically the long time behaviour of the solution in such a situation. These numerical simulations seem to reveal some dependence of the limit measure with respect to the initial datum.

We show that the Einstein-Hilbert functional, as a functional on the space of Reeb vector fields, detects the vanishing Sasaki-Futaki invariant. In particular, this provides an obstruction to the existence of a constant scalar curvature Sasakian metric. As an application we prove that K-semistable polarized Sasaki manifold has vanishing Sasaki-Futaki invariant. We then apply this result to show that under the right conditions on the Sasaki join manifolds of [7] a polarized Sasaki manifold is K-semistable if only if it has constant scalar curvature., Comment: 31 pages, minor corrections made. In this paper we study the smallest non-zero eigenvalue $\lambda_1$ of the Laplacian on toric K\"ahler manifolds. We find an explicit upper bound for $\lambda_1$ in terms of moment polytope data. We show that this bound can only be attained for $\mathbb{CP}^n$ endowed with the Fubini-Study metric and therefore $\mathbb{CP}^n$ endowed with the Fubini-Study metric is spectrally determined among all toric K\"ahler metrics. We also study the equivariant counterpart of $\lambda_1$ which we denote by $\lambda_1^T$. It is the the smallest non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplacian restricted to torus-invariant functions. We prove that $\lambda_1^T$ is not bounded among toric K\"ahler metrics thus generalizing a result of Abreu-Freitas on $S^2$. This paper solves the dynamic portfolio choice problem. Using an explicit solution with a power utility, we construct a bridge between a continuous and discrete VAR model to assess portfolio sensitivities. We find, from a well analyzed example that the optimal allocation to stocks is particularly sensitive to Sharpe ratio. Our quantitative analysis highlights that this sensitivity increases when the risk aversion decreases and/or when the time horizon increases. This finding explains the low accuracy of discrete numerical methods especially along the tails of the unconditional distribution of the state variable.

The XIII Banff meeting, held in conjunction the Canadian Society of Transplantation in Vancouver, Canada, reviewed the clinical impact of updates of C4d-negative antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) from the 2013 meeting, reports from active Banff Working Groups, the relationships of donor-specific antibody tests (anti-HLA and non-HLA) with transplant histopathology, and questions of molecular transplant diagnostics. The use of transcriptome gene sets, their resultant diagnostic classifiers, or common key genes to supplement the diagnosis and classification of rejection requires further consensus agreement and validation in biopsies. Newly introduced concepts include the i-IFTA score, comprising inflammation within areas of fibrosis and atrophy and acceptance of transplant arteriolopathy within the descriptions of chronic active T cell-mediated rejection (TCMR) or chronic ABMR. The pattern of mixed TCMR and ABMR was increasingly recognized. This report also includes improved definitions of TCMR and ABMR in pancreas transplants with specification of vascular lesions and prospects for defining a vascularized composite allograft rejection classification. The goal of the Banff process is ongoing integration of advances in histologic, serologic, and molecular diagnostic techniques to produce a consensus-based reporting system that offers precise composite scores, accurate routine diagnostics, and applicability to next-generation clinical trials.

Life on earth is dependent on the photosynthetic conversion of light energy into chemical energy. However, absorption of excess sunlight can damage the photosynthetic machinery and limit photosynthetic activity, thereby affecting growth and productivity. Photosynthetic light harvesting can be down-regulated by nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ). A major component of NPQ is qE (energy-dependent nonphotochemical quenching), which allows dissipation of light energy as heat. Photodamage peaks in the UV-B part of the spectrum, but whether and how UV-B induces qE are unknown. Plants are responsive to UV-B via the UVR8 photoreceptor. Here, we report in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii that UVR8 induces accumulation of specific members of the light-harvesting complex (LHC) superfamily that contribute to qE, in particular LHC Stress-Related 1 (LHCSR1) and Photosystem II Subunit S (PSBS). The capacity for qE is strongly induced by UV-B, although the patterns of qE-related proteins accumulating in response to UV-B or to high light are clearly different. The competence for qE induced by acclimation to UV-B markedly contributes to photoprotection upon subsequent exposure to high light. Our study reveals an anterograde link between photoreceptor-mediated signaling in the nucleocytosolic compartment and the photoprotective regulation of photosynthetic activity in the chloroplast.

Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. The study describes a class of integer labelings of the Fibonacci tree, the tree of descent introduced by Fibonacci. In these labelings, Fibonacci sequences appear along ascending branches of the tree, and it is shown that the labels at any level are consecutive integers. The set of labeled trees is a commutative group isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^2$, and is endowed with an order relation. Properties of the Wythoff array are recovered as a special instance, and further properties of the labeled Fibonacci trees are described. 145. Trophic groups and modules: two levels of group detection in food webs

Within food webs, species can be partitioned into groups according to various criteria. Two notions have received particular attention: trophic groups, which have been used for decades in the ecological literature, and more recently, modules. The relationship between these two group definitions remains unknown in empirical food webs because they have so far been studied separately. While recent developments in network theory have led to efficient methods for detecting modules in food webs, the determination of trophic groups (sets of species that are functionally similar) is based on subjective expert knowledge. Here, we develop a novel algorithm for trophic group detection. We apply this method to several well-resolved empirical food webs, and show that aggregation into trophic groups allows the simplification of food webs while preserving their information content. Furthermore, we reveal a 2-level hierarchical structure where modules partition food webs into large bottom-top trophic pathways whereas trophic groups further partition these pathways into sets of species with similar trophic connections. Bringing together trophic groups and modules provides new perspectives to the study of dynamical and functional consequences of food-web structure, bridging topological analysis and dynamical systems. Trophic groups have a clear ecological meaning in terms of trophic similarity, and are found to provide a trade-off between network complexity and information loss.

Minerals detection over large volume of spectra is the challenge addressed by current hyperspectral imaging spectrometer in Planetary Science. Instruments such OMEGA (Mars Express), CRISM (Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter), M^{3} (Chandrayaan-1), VIRTIS (Rosetta) and many more, have been producing very large datasets since one decade. We propose here a fast supervised detection algorithm called LinMin, in the framework of linear unmixing, with innovative arrangement in order to treat non-linear cases due to radiative transfer in both atmosphere and surface. We use reference laboratory and synthetic spectral library. Additional spectra are used in order to mimic the effect of Martian aerosols, grain size, and observation geometry discrepancies between reference and observed spectra. The proposed algorithm estimates the uncertainty on mixing coefficient from the uncertainty of observed spectra. Both numerical and observational tests validate the approach.
