Determinations of the low equilibrium concentrations of non-albumin-bound unconjugated bilirubin in serum by a kinetic method have been done on normal umbilical cord blood serum, on serum from exchange transfusions of icteric newborns, and on normal adult serum. The concentrations are about 10-9 M in cord serum and in adult serum, and about 10-5 M in the icteric infant sera. The latter shows little correlation between total unconjugated bilirubin and non-bound bilirubin, indicating that there is a considerable variation in the binding of bilirubin to albumin.

The interactions between neutral self-interstitials in silicon are studied using ab initio tight-binding molecular-dynamics simulations in periodic supercells containing 64 up to 216 Si atoms. A number of configurations with three or more self-interstitials are found, and the lowest-energy ones are discussed. The binding energies of Inrelative to In−1+I show that the first ‘magic number’ (particularly stable aggregate) is I3. The potential energy surfaces for aggregates of three or more I's have several local minima, leading to a range of metastable configurations.

The environmental (or strain) dependence of the electron spin resonancegtensor is calculated for a-Si using a tight binding model of a dangling bond with Bethe lattice back bonding. We find that the variations ofg∥andg⊥are almost identical and we obtain a value ofg∥− g⊥= 0.0025which is considerably smaller than the value for thePbcenter at the Si/SiO2interface. We obtain a good fit to experimental data assuming only a Gaussian distribution of bond angles with an rms deviation of about 9°, which is the generally accepted value for bond angle distortions at tetrahedral sites in a-Si.
