The analysis of the nine 1-fold differential cross sections for the $\gamma_{r,v} p \to \pi^+\pi^-p$ photo- and electroproduction reactions obtained with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory was carried out with the goal to establish the contributing resonances in the mass range from 1.6~GeV to 1.8~GeV. In order to describe the photo- and electroproduction data with $Q^2$-independent resonance masses and hadronic decay widths in the $Q^2$ range below 1.5~GeV$^2$, it was found that an $N'(1720)3/2^+$ state is required in addition to the already well-established nucleon resonances. This work demonstrates that the combined studies of $\pi^+\pi^-p$ photo- and electroproduction data are vital for the observation of this resonance. The contributions from the $N'(1720)3/2^+$ state and the already established $N(1720)3/2^+$ state with a mass of 1.745~GeV are well separated by their different hadronic decays to the $\pi \Delta$ and $\rho p$ final states and the different $Q^2$-evolution of their photo-/electroexcitation amplitudes. The $N'(1720)3/2^+$ state is the first recently established baryon resonance for which the results on the $Q^2$-evolution of the photo-/electrocouplings have become available. The strong nuclear interaction between nucleons (protons and neutrons) is the effective force that holds the atomic nucleus together. This force stems from fundamental interactions between quarks and gluons (the constituents of nucleons) that are described by the equations of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). However, as these equations cannot be solved directly, physicists resort to describing nuclear interactions using effective models that are well constrained at typical inter-nucleon distances in nuclei but not at shorter distances. This limits our ability to describe high-density nuclear matter such as in the cores of neutron stars. Here we use high-energy electron scattering measurements that isolate nucleon pairs in short-distance, high-momentum configurations thereby accessing a kinematical regime that has not been previously explored by experiments, corresponding to relative momenta above 400 MeV/c. As the relative momentum between two nucleons increases and their separation thereby decreases, we observe a transition from a spin-dependent tensor-force to a predominantly spin-independent scalar-force. These results demonstrate the power of using such measurements to study the nuclear interaction at short-distances and also support the use of point-like nucleons with two- and three-body effective interactions to describe nuclear systems up to densities several times higher than the central density of atomic nuclei., Comment: Total 26 pages, 13 figures. Strain mediated Bennett clocking has only recently been experimentally demonstrated and suffered from high error rates. Most models used to explain this behavior are macrospin models. Predictions of these models do not match experimental designs since they consider all spins rotating coherently and no magnetoelastic strain feedback. In this paper a fully coupled nonlinear model (LLG plus elastodynamics) was used to simulate voltage induced Bennett clocking. This modelling captures the full spin dynamics as well as shape anisotropy. Two materials were studied (Ni and Terfenol-D) which have very different exchange lengths. The simulation results show that incoherent rotation may occur due to the uniaxial nature of the magnetoelastic coupling.

Magnetic switch with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is a promising method for controlling magnetization in several applications like magnetic tunnel junction and magnetic memory. However, incoherence happens during the switch process and lower the switch frequency of the magnetic bits. Symmetry broking can help solve this problem. Here, we present a field-free method for the symmetry broking and then increase the switch speed of the magnetization. A strain-mediated method with geometric asymmetry is presented here. In this work, we build a finite element model that consists a 50 nanometer diameter nanodisk with a varied thickness on the top of a 50 nanometer thick PZT (Pby[ZrxTi1-x]O3) thin film. The results show a 66% faster switch than symmetry PMA switching (0.85 nanosecond to 0.29 nanosecond) under same energy consumption. Finally, we explore the mechanism of the symmetry broking of varying thickness nanodot with calculating the energy profile.

We report the first realization of large momentum transfer (LMT) clock atom interferometry. Using single-photon interactions on the strontium ${}^1S_0 - {}^3P_1$ transition, we demonstrate Mach-Zehnder interferometers with state-of-the-art momentum separation of up to $141\,\hbar k$ and gradiometers of up to $81\,\hbar k$. Moreover, we circumvent excited state decay limitations and extend the gradiometer duration to 50 times the excited state lifetime. Because of the broad velocity acceptance of the interferometry pulses, all experiments are performed with laser-cooled atoms at a temperature of $3\,\mu \text{K}$. This work has applications in high-precision inertial sensing and paves the way for LMT-enhanced clock atom interferometry on even narrower transitions, a key ingredient in proposals for gravitational wave detection and dark matter searches., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

For a saturated fusion system $\mathcal F$ on a $p$-group $S$, we study the Burnside ring of the fusion system $B(\mathcal F)$, as defined by Matthew Gelvin and Sune Reeh, which is a subring of the Burnside ring $B(S)$. We give criteria for an element of $B(S)$ to be in $B(\mathcal F)$ determined by the $\mathcal F$-automorphism groups of essential subgroups of $S$. When $\mathcal F$ is the fusion system induced by a finite group $G$ with $S$ as a Sylow $p$-group, we show that the restriction of $B(G)$ to $B(S)$ has image equal to $B(\mathcal F)$. We also show that for $p=2,$ we can gain information about the fusion system by studying the unit group $B(\mathcal F)^\times.$ When $S$ is abelian, we completely determine this unit group., Comment: 14 pages

The exclusive electroproduction process $ep \rightarrow e'p'\pi^{0}$ was measured in the range of photon virtualities $Q^{2} = 0.4 - 1.0$~GeV$^{2}$ and the invariant mass range of the $p\pi^{0}$ system of $W = 1.1 - 1.8$~GeV. These kinematics are covered in exclusive $\pi^{0}$ electroproduction off the proton with nearly complete angular coverage in the $p\pi^{0}$ center-of-mass system and with high statistical accuracy. Nearly 36000 cross section points were measured, and the structure functions $\sigma_T+\epsilon\sigma_L$, $\sigma_{LT}$, and $\sigma_{TT}$, were extracted via fitting the $\phi_{\pi^{0}}$ dependence of the cross section. A Legendre polynomial expansion analysis demonstrates the sensitivity of our data to high-lying $N^*$ and $\Delta^{*}$ resonances with $M~>~1.6$ GeV. As part of a broad effort to determine the electrocouplings of the $N^{*}$ and $\Delta^{*}$ resonances using both single- and double-pion electroproduction, this dataset is crucial for the reliable extraction of the high-lying resonance electrocouplings from the combined isospin analysis of the $N \pi$ and $\pi^{+}\pi^{-} p$ channels., Comment: 21 pages, 24 figures

The study of the spectrum and structure of excited nucleon states employing the electroproduction of exclusive reactions is an important avenue for exploring the nature of the non-perturbative strong interaction. The CLAS detector in Hall~B has provided the dominant part of the available world data on most relevant meson electroproduction channels off the nucleon in the resonance region for $Q^2$ up to 5~GeV$^2$. Analyses of CLAS data for the exclusive channels $\pi N$, $\eta N$, and $\pi^+ \pi^- p$ on a proton target have provided the only results available on the $Q^2$ evolution of the electro-excitation amplitudes for the transitions from the initial photon-proton to the final $N^*$ states in the mass range up to $W$=1.8~GeV. These electrocouplings allow for exploration of the internal structure of the produced excited nucleon states. This work has made it clear that consistent results from independent analyses of several exclusive channels with different resonance hadronic decay parameters and non-resonant backgrounds but the same $N^*$ electro-excitation amplitudes, is essential to have confidence in the extracted results. Starting in early 2018, a program to study the spectrum and structure of $N^*$ states in various exclusive electroproduction channels using the new CLAS12 spectrometer commenced. These studies will probe the structure of $N^*$ states in the mass range up to $W$=3~GeV and for $Q^2$ as low as 0.05~GeV$^2$ and as high as 10-12~GeV$^2$, thus providing a means to access $N^*$ structure information spanning a broad range of distance scales. Quasi-real photoproduction studies are also planned to search for additional $N^*$ states, the so-called hybrid baryons, for which the glue serves as an active structural component. We report results of micro-Brillouin-Mandelstam light scattering spectroscopy of thermal magnons in the two-phase synthetic multiferroic structure consisting of a piezoelectric (PMN-PT) substrate and a Ni thin film with the thickness of 64 nm. The experimental data reveal the first two modes of the perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSW) spatially confined across the Ni thin film. A theoretical analysis of the frequency dependence of the PSSW peaks on the external magnetic field reveals the asymmetric boundary condition, i.e. pinning, for variable magnetization at different surfaces of the Ni thin film. The strain field induced by applying DC voltage to PMN-PT substrate leads to a down shift of PSSW mode frequency owing to the magneto-elastic effect in Ni, and corresponding changes in the spin wave resonance conditions. The observed non-monotonic dependence of the PSSW frequency on DC voltage is related to an abrupt change of the pinning parameter at certain values of the voltage. The obtained results are important for understanding the thermal magnon spectrum in ferromagnetic films and development of the low-power spin-wave devices., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Control of the Neel vector in antiferromagnetic materials is one of the challenges preventing their use as active device components. Several methods have been investigated such as exchange bias, electric current, and spin injection, but little is known about strain-mediated anisotropy. This study of the antiferromagnetic L10-type MnX alloys MnIr, MnRh, MnNi, MnPd, and MnPt shows that a small amount of strain effectively rotates the direction of the Neel vector by 90 degrees for all of the materials. For MnIr, MnRh, MnNi, and MnPd, the Neel vector rotates within the basal plane. For MnPt, the Neel vector rotates from out-of-plane to in-plane under tensile strain. The effectiveness of strain control is quantified by a metric of efficiency and by direct calculation of the magnetostriction coefficients. The values of the magnetostriction coefficients are comparable with those from ferromagnetic materials. These results indicate that strain is a mechanism that can be exploited for control of the Neel vectors in this family of antiferromagnets., Comment: 10 pages including supplementary information. In the past two decades, deeply virtual Compton scattering of electrons has been successfully used to advance our knowledge of the partonic structure of the free proton and investigate correlations between the transverse position and the longitudinal momentum of quarks inside the nucleon. Meanwhile, the structure of bound nucleons in nuclei has been studied in inclusive deep-inelastic lepton scattering experiments off nuclear targets, showing a significant difference in longitudinal momentum distribution of quarks inside the bound nucleon, known as the EMC effect. In this work, we report the first beam spin asymmetry (BSA) measurement of exclusive deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off a proton bound in $^4$He. The data used here were accumulated using a $6$ GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam incident on a pressurized $^4$He gaseous target placed within the CLAS spectrometer in Hall-B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The azimuthal angle ($\phi$) dependence of the BSA was studied in a wide range of virtual photon and scattered proton kinematics. The $Q^2$, $x_B$, and t dependencies of the BSA on the bound proton are compared with those on the free proton. In the whole kinematical region of our measurements, the BSA on the bound proton is smaller by 20\% to 40\%, indicating possible medium modification of its partonic structure.

Nanomagnetic logic (NML) has attracted attention during the last two decades due to its promise of high energy efficiency combined with non-volatility. Data transmission in NML relies on Bennett clocking through dipole interaction between neighboring nanomagnetic bits. This paper uses a fully coupled finite element model to simulate Bennett clocking based on strain-mediated multiferroic system for Ni, CoFeB and Terfenol-D with perpendicular magnetic anisotropies. Simulation results demonstrate that Terfenol-D system has the highest energy efficiency, which is 2 orders of magnitude more efficient than Ni and CoFeB. However, the high efficiency is associated with switching incoherency due to its large magnetostriction coefficient. It is also suggested that the CoFeB clocking system is slower and has lower bit-density than in Ni or Terfenol-D systems due to its large dipole coupling. Moreover, we demonstrate that the precessional perpendicular switching and the Bennett clocking can be achieved using the same strain-mediated multiferroic architecture with different voltage pulsing. This study opens new possibilities to an all-spin in-memory computing system.

Nanomagnetic oscillator is a key component for radio-frequency (RF) signal generation in many nano-scale spintronic devices. However, the actuation mechanisms of nanomagnetic oscillators are mostly current-based, which is energy inefficient at nanoscale due to Joule heating. In this study, we present a new actuation mechanism for nanomagnetic oscillator with pure voltage input using a multiferroic structure. An AC voltage with a DC bias is applied to the piezoelectric substrate, and steady perpendicular magnetic oscillation is achieved in the attached Ni disk when the frequency of the voltage matches the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) of the Ni disk. The FMR can be tuned by simply changing the voltage bias, therefore, the oscillation frequency has a wide range. A systematic simulation study is conducted to investigate the impact of the voltage amplitude, frequency, waveform, as well as the thickness of the magnet on the magnetic oscillation. This opens new possibilities of designing energy efficient nanomagnetic oscillators using multiferroics that have large amplitude and wide frequency range.

First measurements of double-polarization observables in $\omega$ photoproduction off the proton are presented using transverse target polarization and data from the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) FROST experiment at Jefferson Lab. The beam-target asymmetry $F$ has been measured using circularly polarized, tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2700 MeV, and the beam-target asymmetries $H$ and $P$ have been measured using linearly polarized tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2000 MeV. These measurements significantly increase the database on polarization observables. The results are included in two partial-wave analyses and reveal significant contributions from several nucleon ($N^\ast$) resonances. In particular, contributions from new $N^\ast$ resonances listed in the Review of Particle Properties are observed, which aid in reaching the goal of mapping out the nucleon resonance spectrum., Comment: Two authors added, figures updated

Online crowdsourcing provides a scalable and inexpensive means to collect knowledge (e.g. labels) about various types of data items (e.g. text, audio, video). However, it is also known to result in large variance in the quality of recorded responses which often cannot be directly used for training machine learning systems. To resolve this issue, a lot of work has been conducted to control the response quality such that low-quality responses cannot adversely affect the performance of the machine learning systems. Such work is referred to as the quality control for crowdsourcing. Past quality control research can be divided into two major branches: quality control mechanism design and statistical models. The first branch focuses on designing measures, thresholds, interfaces and workflows for payment, gamification, question assignment and other mechanisms that influence workers' behaviour. The second branch focuses on developing statistical models to perform effective aggregation of responses to infer correct responses. The two branches are connected as statistical models (i) provide parameter estimates to support the measure and threshold calculation, and (ii) encode modelling assumptions used to derive (theoretical) performance guarantees for the mechanisms. There are surveys regarding each branch but they lack technical details about the other branch. Our survey is the first to bridge the two branches by providing technical details on how they work together under frameworks that systematically unify crowdsourcing aspects modelled by both of them to determine the response quality. We are also the first to provide taxonomies of quality control papers based on the proposed frameworks. Finally, we specify the current limitations and the corresponding future directions for the quality control research.

The problem of inhomogeneous cluster densities has been a long-standing issue for distance-based and density-based algorithms in clustering and anomaly detection. These algorithms implicitly assume that all clusters have approximately the same density. As a result, they often exhibit a bias towards dense clusters in the presence of sparse clusters. Many remedies have been suggested; yet, we show that they are partial solutions which do not address the issue satisfactorily. To match the implicit assumption, we propose to transform a given dataset such that the transformed clusters have approximately the same density while all regions of locally low density become globally low density -- homogenising cluster density while preserving the cluster structure of the dataset. We show that this can be achieved by using a new multi-dimensional Cumulative Distribution Function in a transform-and-shift method. The method can be applied to every dataset, before the dataset is used in many existing algorithms to match their implicit assumption without algorithmic modification. We report the first experimental measurements of the nine 1-fold differential cross sections for the $\gamma p \to \pi^+\pi^-p$ reaction, obtained with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. The measurements cover the invariant mass range of the final state hadrons from 1.6~GeV~$

We report the first measurements of the $E$ beam-target helicity asymmetry for the $\vec{\gamma} \vec{n} \to K^{0}\Lambda$, and $K^{0}\Sigma^{0}$ channels in the energy range 1.70$\leq W\leq$2.34 GeV. The CLAS system at Jefferson Lab uses a circularly polarized photon beam and a target consisting of longitudinally polarized solid molecular hydrogen deuteride with low background contamination for the measurements. The multivariate analysis method boosted decision trees was used to isolate the reactions of interest. Comparisons with predictions from the KaonMAID, SAID, and Bonn-Gatchina models are presented. These results will help separate the isospin $I=0$ and $I=1$ photo-coupling transition amplitudes in pseudoscalar meson photoproduction., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures; Revised to match published version
