101. Binary extended formulations and sequential convexification

Abstract: A binarization of a bounded variable $x$ is a linear formulation with variables $x$ and additional binary variables $y_1,\dots, y_k$, so that integrality of $x$ is implied by the integrality of $y_1,\dots, y_k$. A binary extended formulation of a polyhedron $P$ is obtained by adding to the original description of $P$ binarizations of some of its variables. In the context of mixed-integer programming, imposing integrality on 0/1 variables rather than on general integer variables has interesting convergence properties and has been studied both from the theoretical and from the practical point of view. We propose a notion of \emph{natural} binarizations and binary extended formulations, encompassing all the ones studied in the literature. We give a simple characterization of the vertices of such formulations, which allows us to study their behavior with respect to sequential convexification. %0/1 disjunctions. In particular, given a binary extended formulation and % a binarization $B$ of one of its variables $x$, we study a parameter that measures the progress made towards ensuring the integrality of $x$ via application of sequential convexification. We formulate this parameter, which we call rank, as the solution of a set covering problem and express it exactly for the classical binarizations from the literature.

102. rta-dq-lib: a software library to perform online data quality analysis of scientific data

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is an initiative that is currently building the largest gamma-ray ground Observatory that ever existed. A Science Alert Generation (SAG) system, part of the Array Control and Data Acquisition (ACADA) system of the CTA Observatory, analyses online the telescope data - arriving at an event rate of tens of kHz - to detect transient gamma-ray events. The SAG system also performs an online data quality analysis to assess the instruments' health during the data acquisition: this analysis is crucial to confirm good detections. A Python and a C++ software library to perform the online data quality analysis of CTA data, called rta-dq-lib, has been proposed for CTA. The Python version is dedicated to the rapid prototyping of data quality use cases. The C++ version is optimized for maximum performance. The library allows the user to define, through XML configuration files, the format of the input data and, for each data field, which quality checks must be performed and which types of aggregations and transformations must be applied. It internally translates the XML configuration into a direct acyclic computational graph that encodes the dependencies of the computational tasks to be performed. This model allows the library to easily take advantage of parallelization at the thread level and the overall flexibility allow us to develop generic data quality analysis pipelines that could also be reused in other applications.

103. Time reversal of Markov processes with jumps under a finite entropy condition

Abstract: Motivated by entropic optimal transport, time reversal of Markov jump processes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is investigated. Relying on an abstract integration by parts formula for the carr\'e du champ of a Markov process recently obtained by Cattiaux, Gentil and the authors, and using an entropic improvement strategy discovered by F\"ollmer in the eighties, we compute the semimartingale characteristics of the time reversed process for a wide class of jump processes with possibly unbounded variation sample paths and singular intensities of jump.

104. Time reversal of diffusion processes under a finite entropy condition

Abstract: Motivated by entropic optimal transport, time reversal of diffusion processes is revisited. An integration by parts formula is derived for the carr\'e du champ of a Markov process in an abstract space. It leads to a time reversal formula for a wide class of diffusion processes in $ \mathbb{R}^n$ possibly with singular drifts, extending the already known results in this domain. The proof of the integration by parts formula relies on stochastic derivatives. Then, this formula is applied to compute the semimartingale characteristics of the time-reversed $P^*$ of a diffusion measure $P$ provided that the relative entropy of $P$ with respect to another diffusion measure $R$ is finite, and the semimartingale characteristics of the time-reversed $R^*$ are known (for instance when the reference path measure $R$ is reversible). Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a 20 kton LS detector at 700-m underground. An excellent energy resolution and a large fiducial volume offer exciting opportunities for addressing many important topics in neutrino and astro-particle physics. With 6 years of data, the neutrino mass ordering can be determined at 3-4 sigma and three oscillation parameters can be measured to a precision of 0.6% or better by detecting reactor antineutrinos. With 10 years of data, DSNB could be observed at 3-sigma; a lower limit of the proton lifetime of 8.34e33 years (90% C.L.) can be set by searching for p->nu_bar K^+; detection of solar neutrinos would shed new light on the solar metallicity problem and examine the vacuum-matter transition region. A core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 IBD and ~2000 (300) all-flavor neutrino-proton (electron) scattering events. Geo-neutrinos can be detected with a rate of ~400 events/year. We also summarize the final design of the JUNO detector and the key R&D achievements. All 20-inch PMTs have been tested. The average photon detection efficiency is 28.9% for the 15,000 MCP PMTs and 28.1% for the 5,000 dynode PMTs, higher than the JUNO requirement of 27%. Together with the >20 m attenuation length of LS, we expect a yield of 1345 p.e. per MeV and an effective energy resolution of 3.02%/\sqrt{E (MeV)}$ in simulations. The underwater electronics is designed to have a loss rate <0.5% in 6 years. With degassing membranes and a micro-bubble system, the radon concentration in the 35-kton water pool could be lowered to <10 mBq/m^3. Acrylic panels of radiopurity <0.5 ppt U/Th are produced. The 20-kton LS will be purified onsite. Singles in the fiducial volume can be controlled to ~10 Hz. The JUNO experiment also features a double calorimeter system with 25,600 3-inch PMTs, a LS testing facility OSIRIS, and a near detector TAO., Comment: A review paper with 78 pages and 32 figures. v2: minor revision. Abstract: The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator fillling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $10^{-16}$ g/g of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th requires a large ($\sim$20 m$^3$) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup., Comment: 32 pages, 22 figures

Abstract: Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu$ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3'' PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu$ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. Abstract: We study modulational instability (MI) in optical fibers with random group velocity dispersion (GVD) generated by sharply localized perturbations of a normal GVD fiber that are either randomly or periodically placed along the fiber and that have random strength. This perturbation leads to the appearance of low frequency MI side lobes that grow with the strength of the perturbations, whereas they are faded by randomness in their position. If the random perturbations exhibit a finite average value, they can be compared with periodically perturbed fibers, where Arnold tongues appear. In that case, increased randomness in the strengths of the variations tends to affect the Arnold tongues less than increased randomness in their positions.

Abstract: 26,000 3-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) have been produced for Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) by the Hainan Zhanchuang Photonics Technology Co., Ltd (HZC) company in China and passed all acceptance tests with only 15 tubes rejected. The mass production began in 2018 and elapsed for about 2 years at a rate of $\sim$1,000~PMTs per month. The characterization of the PMTs was performed in the factory concurrently with production as a joint effort between HZC and JUNO. Fifteen performance parameters were tracked at different sampling rates, and novel working strategies were implemented to improve quality assurance. This constitutes the largest sample of 3-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date.

Abstract: Most well-established data collection methods currently adopted in NLP depend on the assumption of speaker literacy. Consequently, the collected corpora largely fail to represent swathes of the global population, which tend to be some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in society, and often live in rural developing areas. Such underrepresented groups are thus not only ignored when making modeling and system design decisions, but also prevented from benefiting from development outcomes achieved through data-driven NLP. Abstract: A basic idea in optimal transport is that optimizers can be characterized through a geometric property of their support sets called cyclical monotonicity. In recent years, similar "monotonicity principles" have found applications in other fields where infinite dimensional linear optimization problems play an important role. In this note, we observe how this approach can be transferred to non-linear optimization problems. Specifically we establish a monotonicity principle that is applicable to the Schr\"odinger problem and use it to characterize the structure of optimizers for target functionals beyond relative entropy. Abstract: We present the theory of modulation instability induced by spectrally dependent losses (optical filters) in passive driven nonlinear fiber ring resonators. Starting from an Ikeda map description of the propagation equation and boundary conditions, we derive a mean field model - a generalised Lugiato-Lefever equation - which reproduces with great accuracy the predictions of the map. The effects on instability gain and comb generation of the different control parameters such as dispersion, cavity detuning, filter spectral position and bandwidth are discussed.

Abstract: An ASIC named CATIROC (Charge And Time Integrated Read Out Chip) has been developed for the next-generation neutrino experiments using a large number of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). Each CATIROC provides the time and the charge measurements for 16 configurable input channels operating in trigger-less mode. Originally designed for the light emission in water Cherenkov detectors, we show in this paper that its use can be extended to liquid-scintillator based experiments. The $\sim$26000 3-inch PMTs of the JUNO experiment, under construction in China, is a case in point. This paper describes the features of CATIROC with a special attention to the most critical points for its application to the time profile of the light emission in liquid scintillators. Abstract: We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

Abstract: The celebrated Otto calculus has established itself as a powerful tool for proving quantitative energy dissipation estimates and provides with an elegant geometric interpretation of certain functional inequalities such as the Logarithmic Sobolev inequality. However, the \emph{local} versions of such inequalities, which can be proven by means of Bakry-Emery-Ledoux $\Gamma$-calculus, has not yet been given an interpretation in terms of this Riemannian formalism. In this short note we close this gap by explaining how Otto calculus applied to the Schr{\"o}dinger problem yields a variations interpretation of the local logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, that could possibly unlock novel class of local inequalities.

Abstract: We study the complexity of cutting planes and branching schemes from a theoretical point of view. We give some rigorous underpinnings to the empirically observed phenomenon that combining cutting planes and branching into a branch-and-cut framework can be orders of magnitude more efficient than employing these tools on their own. In particular, we give general conditions under which a cutting plane strategy and a branching scheme give a provably exponential advantage in efficiency when combined into branch-and-cut. The efficiency of these algorithms is evaluated using two concrete measures: number of iterations and sparsity of constraints used in the intermediate linear/convex programs. To the best of our knowledge, our results are the first mathematically rigorous demonstration of the superiority of branch-and-cut over pure cutting planes and pure branch-and-bound.

Abstract: The $3 \times 1 \times 1$ m$^3$ demonstrator is a dual phase liquid argon time projection chamber that has recorded cosmic rays events in 2017 at CERN. The light signal in these detectors is crucial to provide precise timing capabilities. The performances of the photon detection system, composed of five PMTs, are discussed. The collected scintillation and electroluminescence light created by passing particles has been studied in various detector conditions. Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for $\gamma$-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of $\gamma$-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of $\gamma$-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift $z=2$ and to constrain or detect $\gamma$-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from $\gamma$-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. Abstract: The classical theory of modulation instability (MI) attributed to Bespalov-Talanov in optics and Benjamin-Feir for water waves is just a linear approximation of nonlinear effects and has limitations that have been corrected using the exact weakly nonlinear theory of wave propagation. We report results of experiments in both, optics and hydrodynamics, which are in excellent agreement with nonlinear theory. These observations clearly demonstrate that MI has wider band of unstable frequencies than predicted by the linear stability analysis. The range of areas where the nonlinear theory of MI can be applied is actually much larger than considered here., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: We provide an updated assessment of the power of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to search for thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale, via the associated gamma-ray signal from pair-annihilating dark matter particles in the region around the Galactic centre. We find that CTA will open a new window of discovery potential, significantly extending the range of robustly testable models given a standard cuspy profile of the dark matter density distribution. Importantly, even for a cored profile, the projected sensitivity of CTA will be sufficient to probe various well-motivated models of thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale. This is due to CTA's unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolutions, and the planned observational strategy. The survey of the inner Galaxy will cover a much larger region than corresponding previous observational campaigns with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. CTA will map with unprecedented precision the large-scale diffuse emission in high-energy gamma rays, constituting a background for dark matter searches for which we adopt state-of-the-art models based on current data. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date event reconstruction Monte Carlo tools developed by the CTA consortium, and pay special attention to quantifying the level of instrumental systematic uncertainties, as well as background template systematic errors, required to probe thermally produced dark matter at these energies. 124. Phase transitions of photon fluid flows driven by a virtual all-optical piston

Abstract: The piston problem, i.e. the dynamics in a uniform gas at rest under the action of a moving piston is fundamental problem of physics and a canonical case study in shock wave physics. We investigate theoretically and experimentally the analogous problem for a photon fluid, which turns out to be strongly influenced by the dispersive character of the problem. The experiment makes use of a fiber optics setup where an all-optically controlled quasi instantaneous change of frequency of the input light mimics the piston action. We show that the flow exhibits phase transitions which involve cross-over from regimes characterized by 2-shocks (pushing piston) to 2-rarefaction waves (retracting piston), with the appearance of cavitating states at critical amplitudes of the jump. Importantly, the appearance of vacuum points into the 2-shock marks the transition to a regime which is unique to the photon fluid. Our observations allow for the extensive and quantitative test of the state of the art description of the dispersive Riemann problem, i.e. Whitham modulation theory, applied to the universal defocusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation.

125. Long-time behaviour of entropic interpolations

Abstract: In this article we investigate entropic interpolations. These measure valued curves describe the optimal solutions of the Schr{\"o}dinger problem [Sch31], which is the problem of finding the most likely evolution of a system of independent Brownian particles conditionally to observations. It is well known that in the short time limit entropic interpolations converge to the McCann-geodesics of optimal transport. Here we focus on the long-time behaviour, proving in particular asymptotic results for the entropic cost and establishing the convergence of entropic interpolations towards the heat equation, which is the gradient flow of the entropy according to the Otto calculus interpretation. Explicit rates are also given assuming the Bakry-{\'E}mery curvature-dimension condition. In this respect, one of the main novelties of our work is that we are able to control the long time behavior of entropic interpolations assuming the CD(0, n) condition only.

Abstract: To maximize the light yield of the liquid scintillator (LS) for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 t LS sample was produced in a pilot plant at Daya Bay. The optical properties of the new LS in various compositions were studied by replacing the gadolinium-loaded LS in one antineutrino detector. The concentrations of the fluor, PPO, and the wavelength shifter, bis-MSB, were increased in 12 steps from 0.5 g/L and <0.01 mg/L to 4 g/L and 13 mg/L, respectively. The numbers of total detected photoelectrons suggest that, with the optically purified solvent, the bis-MSB concentration does not need to be more than 4 mg/L. To bridge the one order of magnitude in the detector size difference between Daya Bay and JUNO, the Daya Bay data were used to tune the parameters of a newly developed optical model. Then, the model and tuned parameters were used in the JUNO simulation. This enabled to determine the optimal composition for the JUNO LS: purified solvent LAB with 2.5 g/L PPO, and 1 to 4 mg/L bis-MSB., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory~(JUNO) features a 20~kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector. Some of JUNO's features make it an excellent experiment for $^8$B solar neutrino measurements, such as its low-energy threshold, its high energy resolution compared to water Cherenkov detectors, and its much large target mass compared to previous liquid scintillator detectors. In this paper we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO's potential for detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process. A reduced 2~MeV threshold on the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable assuming the intrinsic radioactive background $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in the liquid scintillator can be controlled to 10$^{-17}$~g/g. With ten years of data taking, about 60,000 signal and 30,000 background events are expected. This large sample will enable an examination of the distortion of the recoil electron spectrum that is dominated by the neutrino flavor transformation in the dense solar matter, which will shed new light on the tension between the measured electron spectra and the predictions of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework. If $\Delta m^{2}_{21}=4.8\times10^{-5}~(7.5\times10^{-5})$~eV$^{2}$, JUNO can provide evidence of neutrino oscillation in the Earth at the about 3$\sigma$~(2$\sigma$) level by measuring the non-zero signal rate variation with respect to the solar zenith angle. Moveover, JUNO can simultaneously measure $\Delta m^2_{21}$ using $^8$B solar neutrinos to a precision of 20\% or better depending on the central value and to sub-percent precision using reactor antineutrinos. A comparison of these two measurements from the same detector will help elucidate the current tension between the value of $\Delta m^2_{21}$ reported by solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment., Comment: 29 pages, 14 plots, 7 tables

Abstract: The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, also known as JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). A ton-level liquid scintillator detector will be placed at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. The reactor antineutrino spectrum will be measured with sub-percent energy resolution, to provide a reference spectrum for future reactor neutrino experiments, and to provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. A spherical acrylic vessel containing 2.8 ton gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator will be viewed by 10 m^2 Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) of >50% photon detection efficiency with almost full coverage. The photoelectron yield is about 4500 per MeV, an order higher than any existing large-scale liquid scintillator detectors. The detector operates at -50 degree C to lower the dark noise of SiPMs to an acceptable level. The detector will measure about 2000 reactor antineutrinos per day, and is designed to be well shielded from cosmogenic backgrounds and ambient radioactivities to have about 10% background-to-signal ratio. 130. Stationary States and Instabilities of a Mobius Fibre Resonator

Abstract: We examine the steady state and dynamic behaviour of an optical resonator comprised of two interlinked fibre loops sharing a common pump. A coupled Ikeda map models with great accuracy the field evolution within and exchange between both fibres over a single roundtrip. We find this supports a range of rich multi-dimensional bistability in the continuous wave regime, as well as previously unseen cavity soliton states. Floquet analysis reveals that modulation and parametric instabilities occur over wider domains than in single-fibre resonators, which can be tailored by controlling the relative dispersion and resonance frequencies of the two fibre loops. Parametric instability gives birth to train of pulses with a peculiar period-doubling behavior.

131. Natural language processing for achieving sustainable development: the case of neural labelling to enhance community profiling

Abstract: In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the application of Artificial Intelligence - and especially Machine Learning - to the field of Sustainable Development (SD). However, until now, NLP has not been applied in this context. In this research paper, we show the high potential of NLP applications to enhance the sustainability of projects. In particular, we focus on the case of community profiling in developing countries, where, in contrast to the developed world, a notable data gap exists. In this context, NLP could help to address the cost and time barrier of structuring qualitative data that prohibits its widespread use and associated benefits. We propose the new task of Automatic UPV classification, which is an extreme multi-class multi-label classification problem. We release Stories2Insights, an expert-annotated dataset, provide a detailed corpus analysis, and implement a number of strong neural baselines to address the task. Abstract: We study the exponential dissipation of entropic functionals for continuous time Markov chains and the associated convex Sobolev inequalities, including MLSI and Beckner inequalities. We propose a method that combines the Bakry \'Emery approach and coupling arguments, which we use as a probabilistic alternative to the discrete Bochner identities. The method is well suited to work in a non perturbative setting and we obtain new estimates for interacting random walks beyond the high temperature/weak interaction regime. In this framework, we also show that the exponential contraction of the Wasserstein distance along the semigroup implies MLSI. We also revisit classical examples often obtaining new inequalities and sometimes improving on the best known constants. Abstract: In this paper we study a type of games regularized by the relative entropy, where the players' strategies are coupled through a random environment variable. Besides the existence and the uniqueness of equilibria of such games, we prove that the marginal laws of the corresponding mean-field Langevin systems can converge towards the games' equilibria in different settings. As applications, the dynamic games can be treated as games on a random environment when one treats the time horizon as the environment. In practice, our results can be applied to analysing the stochastic gradient descent algorithm for deep neural networks in the context of supervised learning as well as for the generative adversarial networks.

Abstract: We investigate the theoretical complexity of branch-and-bound (BB) and cutting plane (CP) algorithms for mixed-integer optimization. In particular, we study the relative efficiency of BB and CP, when both are based on the same family of disjunctions. We extend a result of Dash to the nonlinear setting which shows that for convex 0/1 problems, CP does at least as well as BB, with variable disjunctions. We sharpen this by giving instances of the stable set problem where we can provably establish that CP does exponentially better than BB. We further show that if one moves away from 0/1 sets, this advantage of CP over BB disappears; there are examples where BB finishes in O(1) time, but CP takes infinitely long to prove optimality, and exponentially long to get to arbitrarily close to the optimal value (for variable disjunctions). We next show that if the dimension is considered a fixed constant, then the situation reverses and BB does at least as well as CP (up to a polynomial blow up), no matter which family of disjunctions is used. This is also complemented by examples where this gap is exponential (in the size of the input data).

Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a 20 kton LS detectorat 700-m underground. An excellent energy resolution and a large fiducialvolume offer exciting opportunities for addressing many important topics inneutrino and astro-particle physics. With 6 years of data, the neutrino massordering can be determined at 3-4 sigma and three oscillation parameters can bemeasured to a precision of 0.6% or better by detecting reactor antineutrinos.With 10 years of data, DSNB could be observed at 3-sigma; a lower limit of theproton lifetime of 8.34e33 years (90% C.L.) can be set by searching forp->nu_bar K^+; detection of solar neutrinos would shed new light on the solarmetallicity problem and examine the vacuum-matter transition region. Acore-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 IBD and ~2000 (300)all-flavor neutrino-proton (electron) scattering events. Geo-neutrinos can bedetected with a rate of ~400 events/year. We also summarize the final design ofthe JUNO detector and the key R&D achievements. All 20-inch PMTs have beentested. The average photon detection efficiency is 28.9% for the 15,000 MCPPMTs and 28.1% for the 5,000 dynode PMTs, higher than the JUNO requirement of27%. Together with the >20 m attenuation length of LS, we expect a yield of1345 p.e. per MeV and an effective energy resolution of 3.02%/\sqrt{E (MeV)}$in simulations. Abstract: The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator fillling chainof the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate theradiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNOscintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillatoris filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of$10^{-16}$ g/g of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th requires a large ($\sim$20 m$^3$)detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports onthe design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulationas well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Ththat can be reached in this setup.

Abstract: Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sourcesthat can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrinooscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment,a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution iscurrently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect severalatmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNOdetection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu$fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmosphericneutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoreticalmodels, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timingresolution of the 3'' PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the muchhigher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the timestructure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $\nu_e$and $\nu_\mu$ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, thedifferent time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primaryneutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to inferthe primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimentalobservables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energyregion.

Abstract: We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.
