101. The Star Formation Histories of the Bulge and Disk of M31 from Gemini North+NIRI/Altair and HST/NICMOS

Abstract

We discuss H and K observations of three fields in the bulge and disk of M31 obtained with the Altair adaptive optics system and NIRI instrument on Gemini North. These are the highest resolution and deepest near-infrared observations obtained to date of the inner regions of M31, and demonstrate the promise of ground-based adaptive optics for studying the crowded regions of nearby galaxies. We have combined our observations with previously published HST/NICMOS observations of nine M31 fields and have derived the coarse star formation histories of M31's bulge and inner disk. From fits to the M_K luminosity functions, we find the stellar population mix to be dominated by old, nearly solar-metallicity stars. The old populations, which we define as having age >~6 Gyr, indeed dominate the star formation histories at all radii independent of the relative contributions of bulge and disk stars. Although all of our fields contain some bulge contribution, our results suggest that there is no age difference between the bulge and disk to the limit of our precision., Comment: 65 total pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

103. Star Clusters in Virgo and Fornax Dwarf Irregular Galaxies

Abstract

We present the results of a search for clusters in dwarf irregular galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax Cluster using HST WFPC2 snapshot data. The galaxy sample includes 28 galaxies, 11 of which are confirmed members of the Virgo and Fornax clusters. In the 11 confirmed members, we detect 237 cluster candidates and determine their V magnitudes, V-I colors and core radii. After statistical subtraction of background galaxies and foreground stars, most of the cluster candidates have V-I colors of -0.2 and 1.4, V magnitudes lying between 20 and 25th magnitude and core radii between 0 and 6 pc. Using H-alpha observations, we find that 26% of the blue cluster candidates are most likely HII regions. The rest of the cluster candidates are most likely massive (>10^4 Msol) young and old clusters. A comparison between the red cluster candidates in our sample and the Milky Way globular clusters shows that they have similar luminosity distributions, but that the red cluster candidates typically have larger core radii. Assuming that the red cluster candidates are in fact globular clusters, we derive specific frequencies (S_N) ranging from ~0-9 for the galaxies. Although the values are uncertain, seven of the galaxies appear to have specific frequencies greater than 2. These values are more typical of ellipticals and nucleated dwarf ellipticals than they are of spirals or Local Group dwarf irregulars., Comment: 46 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, accepted by AJ. 104. Stellar Crowding and the Science Case for Extremely Large Telescopes

Abstract

We present a study of the effect of crowding on stellar photometry. We develop an analytical model through which we are able to predict the error in magnitude and color for a given star for any combination of telescope resolution, stellar luminosity function, background surface brightness, and distance. We test our predictions with Monte Carlo simulations of the LMC globular cluster NGC 1835, for resolutions corresponding to a seeing-limited telescope, the $HST$, and an AO-corrected 30-m (near diffraction limited) telescope. Our analytically predicted magnitude errors agree with the simulation results to within $\sim$20%. The analytical model also predicts that errors in color are strongly affected by the correlation of crowding--induced photometric errors between bands as is seen in the simulations. Using additional Monte Carlo simulations and our analytical crowding model, we investigate the photometric accuracy which 30-m and 100-m Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) will be able to achieve at distances extending to the Virgo cluster. 105. A Comprehensive Look at LH72 in the Context of Supergiant Shell LMC-4

Stellar spectroscopy, UBV photometry, H$\alpha$ imaging, and analysis of data from the ATCA \ion{H}{1} survey of the LMC are combined in a study of the LMC OB association LH 72 and its surroundings. LH 72 lies on the rim of a previously identified \ion{H}{1} shell, SGS-14, and in the interior of LMC-4, one of the LMC's largest known supergiant shells. Our analysis of the \ion{H}{1} data finds that SGS-14 is expanding with velocity $v_{exp}\sim15$ km s$^{-1}$, giving it an expansion age of $\sim$15 Myr. Through the stellar spectroscopy and photometry, we find similar ages for the oldest stars of LH 72, $\sim15-$30 Myr. We confirm that LH 72 contains an age spread of $\sim15-$30 Myr, similar to the range in ages of stars derived for the entire surrounding supergiant shell. Combining analysis of the O and B stars with H$\alpha$ imaging of the \ion{H}{2} region DEM 228, we find that DEM 228 accounts for only 60% of the available ionizing Lyman continuum photons. Comparing the distribution of ionized gas with that of the \ion{H}{1}, we find that DEM 228 and LH 72 are offset by $\sim1-2\arcmin$ from the peak 21-cm emission, towards the interior of SGS-14. Taken together, these results imply that SGS-14 has cleared its interior of gas and triggered the formation of LH 72. 106. Star Formation Histories from HST Color-Magnitude Diagrams of Six Fields of the LMC

Abstract

We present results on the analysis of background field stars found in HST WFPC2 observations of six of the old globular clusters of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Treated as contaminants by the globular cluster analysts, we produce V-I,V color-magnitude diagrams of the field stars and use them to explore the LMC's star formation history. The photometry approaches V~26, well below the turnoff of an ancient ~14 Gyr LMC population of stars. We use a maximum-likelihood technique to fit model CMDs drawn from Bertelli et al. (1994) isochrones to the observed CMDs. We constrain the models by the age-metallicity relation derived from LMC clusters, test four IMF slopes, and fit for the reddening, distance modulus, and star formation rate. We find that we can just resolve structure in SFR(t) with time steps of ~0.15 in log age, implying a resolution of ~4x10^8 years at an age of 1 Gyr. For a Salpeter IMF, our derived star formation history for the NGC 1754 field is characterized by an enhanced star formation rate over the past 4 Gyr, qualitatively resembling that derived by others for a variety of LMC fields. The remaining four fields, however, appear to have had high levels of star formation activity as long as 5-8 Gyr ago; these fields lie in the LMC Bar while the NGC 1754 field lies in the disk, suggesting that the inner regions of the LMC contain significantly more older stars than the outer regions. Examining the residuals of the models and observations, we find that the old red giant branches of the models provide a poor fit to the observations, which suggests an error in the model isochrones. Abstract

In this paper, we analyse the metallicity structure of the Magellanic Clouds using parameters derived from the Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) low-resolution XP (for Blue/Red Photometer) spectra, astrometry, and photometry. We find that the qualitative behaviour of the radial metallicity gradients in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is quite similar, with both of them having a metallicity plateau at intermediate radii and a second at larger radii. The LMC has a first metallicity plateau at [M/H] ≈ −0.8 for 3–7°, while the SMC has one at [M/H] ≈ −1.1 for 3–5°. The outer LMC periphery has a fairly constant metallicity of [M/H] ≈ −1.0 (10–18°), while the outer SMC periphery has a value of [M/H] ≈ −1.3 (6–10°). The sharp drop in metallicity in the LMC at ∼8° and the marked difference in age distributions in these two regions suggest that there were two important evolutionary phases in the LMC. In addition, we find that the Magellanic periphery substructures, likely Magellanic debris, are mostly dominated by LMC material stripped off in old interactions with the SMC. This presents a new picture in contrast with the popular belief that the debris around the clouds had been mostly stripped off from the SMC due to having a lower mass. We perform a detailed analysis for each known substructure and identify its potential origin based on metallicities and motions with respect to each galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Vera C. Rubin Observatory is a ground-based astronomical facility under construction, a joint project of the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, designed to conduct a multipurpose 10 yr optical survey of the Southern Hemisphere sky: the Legacy Survey of Space and Time. Significant flexibility in survey strategy remains within the constraints imposed by the core science goals of probing dark energy and dark matter, cataloging the solar system, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. The survey's massive data throughput will be transformational for many other astrophysics domains and Rubin's data access policy sets the stage for a huge community of potential users. To ensure that the survey science potential is maximized while serving as broad a community as possible, Rubin Observatory has involved the scientific community at large in the process of setting and refining the details of the observing strategy. The motivation, history, and decision-making process of this strategy optimization are detailed in this paper, giving context to the science-driven proposals and recommendations for the survey strategy included in this Focus Issue.

Abstract

Formålet med undersøkelsen var å kartlegge hvilke forventninger det første kullet i den femårige integrerte masterutdanningen for grunnskolelærere har til arbeidet som profesjonelle lærere i skolen. Det empiriske grunnlaget for rapporten består av svar fra studenter som nettopp hadde startet i det siste året i grunnskolelærerutdanningen. Spørreskjemaet omfattet i hovedsak spørsmål med faste svaralternativer, men med anledning for respondentene til å kommentere sine svar. Datainnsamlingen ble gjennomført høsten 2021, i en periode preget av Covid19-pandemien med nedstengning og utstrakt nettbasert undervisning som erstatning for planlagt undervisning på campus. Det er også verdt å merke seg at undersøkelsen ble gjennomført før studentene hadde startet arbeidet med masteroppgaven, og deres vurderinger av utdanningen og betydningen av masteroppgaven må forstås i lys av det. Resultatene viser at studentene generelt sett ser fram til yrkesstarten med forventning og spenning. De føler seg godt forberedt til å undervise i fagene de har fordypning i fra utdanningen. Samtidig viser kommentarene at mange er usikre på om de i tilstrekkelig grad er rustet for bredden og kompleksiteten i utfordringene de forventer å møte i skolen. Denne usikkerheten handler i første rekke om to forhold: For det første er de urolige med tanke på eventuelt å undervise i fag de ikke har fordypning i. Videre indikerer svar og kommentarer at de mener de er lite forberedt til å håndtere en del av de oppgavene som understøtter møtet med elevene i klasserommet. Det gjelder i første rekke samarbeid med foresatte, kontaktlærerrollen, samarbeid med skolens hjelpetjenester og tilrettelegging for elever med særskilte behov. Studentene forventer at overgangen fra utdanning til arbeidet i skolen blir krevende. De har en offensiv og læringsorientert holdning til møtet med disse utfordringene. Når det gjelder deres eget behov for tilrettelegging og lærings-støttende tiltak, peker de i første rekke på forventninger om samarbeid med erfarne kolleger, tilpasning fra ledelsen i form av arbeids- og undervisningsplaner som de kan mestre og deltakelse i en kvalitetssikret veiledningsordning i tråd med de nasjonale prinsippene for veiledning av nyutdannede lærere. På spørsmål om hva studentene mener de vil kunne tilføre det profesjonelle fellesskapet i skolen, peker de på entusiasme og glød for elevenes læring og skolemiljø og vilje til å stimulere til elevmedvirkning og demokratiforståelse. Studentene gir også uttrykk for at de tror de kan bidra med en kritisk-analytisk og utforskende tilnærming til undervisning og læring. Både svar og kommentarer viser at svært mange av studentene primært oppfatter arbeidet med masteroppgaven som en ytterligere fordypning og spesialisering i fag.

Abstract

The classical globular clusters found in all galaxy types have half-light radii of r h ∼ 2–4 pc, which have been tied to formation in the dense cores of giant molecular clouds. Some old star clusters have larger sizes, and it is unclear if these represent a fundamentally different mode of low-density star cluster formation. We report the discovery of a rare, young 'faint fuzzy' star cluster, NGC 247-SC1, on the outskirts of the low-mass spiral galaxy NGC 247 in the nearby Sculptor group, and measure its radial velocity using Keck spectroscopy. We use Hubble Space Telescope imaging to measure the cluster half-light radius of r h ≃ 12 pc and a luminosity of LV ≃ 4 × 105 L ⊙. We produce a colour–magnitude diagram of cluster stars and compare to theoretical isochrones, finding an age of ≃300 Myr, a metallicity of [ Z /H] ∼ −0.6 and an inferred mass of M ⋆ ≃ 9 × 104M⊙. The narrow width of blue-loop star magnitudes implies an age spread of ≲50 Myr, while no old red-giant branch stars are found, so SC1 is consistent with hosting a single stellar population, modulo several unexplained bright 'red straggler' stars. SC1 appears to be surrounded by tidal debris, at the end of an ∼2 kpc long stellar filament that also hosts two low-mass, low-density clusters of a similar age. We explore a link between the formation of these unusual clusters and an external perturbation of their host galaxy, illuminating a possible channel by which some clusters are born with large sizes. Abstract

The DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys (http://legacysurvey.org/) are a combination of three public projects (the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey, the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey, and the Mayall z-band Legacy Survey) that will jointly image ≈14,000 deg2 of the extragalactic sky visible from the northern hemisphere in three optical bands (g, r, and z) using telescopes at the Kitt Peak National Observatory and the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The combined survey footprint is split into two contiguous areas by the Galactic plane. The optical imaging is conducted using a unique strategy of dynamically adjusting the exposure times and pointing selection during observing that results in a survey of nearly uniform depth. In addition to calibrated images, the project is delivering a catalog, constructed by using a probabilistic inference-based approach to estimate source shapes and brightnesses. The catalog includes photometry from the grz optical bands and from four mid-infrared bands (at 3.4, 4.6, 12, and 22 μm) observed by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer satellite during its full operational lifetime. The project plans two public data releases each year. All the software used to generate the catalogs is also released with the data. Abstract

The advent of increasingly large and complex datasets has fundamentally altered the way that scientists conduct astronomy research. The need to work closely to the data has motivated the creation of online science platforms, which include a suite of software tools and services, therefore going beyond data storage and data access. We present two example applications of Jupyter as a part of astrophysical science platforms for professional researchers and students. First, the Astro Data Lab is developed and operated by NOIRLab with a mission to serve the astronomy community with now over 1500 registered users. Second, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument science platform serves its geographically distributed team comprising about 900 collaborators from over 90 institutions. We describe the main uses of Jupyter and the interfaces that needed to be created to embed it within science platform ecosystems. We use these examples to illustrate the broader concept of empowering researchers and providing them with access to not only large datasets but also cutting-edge software, tools, and data services without requiring any local installation, which can be relevant for a wide range of disciplines. Abstract

We present a map of the total intrinsic reddening across ≃ 90 deg2 of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) derived using optical (ugriz) and near-infrared (IR; YJK s) spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of background galaxies. The reddening map is created from a sample of 222 752 early-type galaxies based on the lephare χ 2 minimization SED-fitting routine. We find excellent agreement between the regions of enhanced intrinsic reddening across the central (4 × 4 deg2) region of the LMC and the morphology of the low-level pervasive dust emission as traced by far-IR emission. In addition, we are able to distinguish smaller, isolated enhancements that are coincident with known star-forming regions and the clustering of young stars observed in morphology maps. The level of reddening associated with the molecular ridge south of 30 Doradus is, however, smaller than in the literature reddening maps. The reduced number of galaxies detected in this region, due to high extinction and crowding, may bias our results towards lower reddening values. Our map is consistent with maps derived from red clump stars and from the analysis of the star formation history across the LMC. This study represents one of the first large-scale categorizations of extragalactic sources behind the LMC and as such we provide the lephare outputs for our full sample of ∼ 2.5 million sources. An archive of raw, reduced, and high-level data products is critical to maximizing the scientific productivity of an observatory. Archives act as multipliers of scientific impact and accessibility and prepare their communities to become frontline users of observatory facilities. 125. News from the Magellanic Clouds

Abstract

The Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH; [1]) was designed to study in depth the two largest satellites of the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds. This survey, with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam; which is funded mainly by the US Department of Energy), mapped 480 square degrees (distributed over 2,400 square degrees in and around the Clouds) in five photometric bands (ugriz) down to magnitude ~24 in each band. All of the observations were released in SMASH DR2 [2] and are available via NOIRLab’s Astro Data Lab. Although the observations were collected during the period 2013–2016, the SMASH collaboration continues exploiting the rich dataset. We report here three new exciting results from the survey.

Abstract

Vera C. Rubin Observatory is a ground-based astronomical facility under construction, a joint project of the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, designed to conduct a multi-purpose 10-year optical survey of the southern hemisphere sky: the Legacy Survey of Space and Time. Significant flexibility in survey strategy remains within the constraints imposed by the core science goals of probing dark energy and dark matter, cataloging the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. The survey's massive data throughput will be transformational for many other astrophysics domains and Rubin's data access policy sets the stage for a huge potential users' community. To ensure that the survey science potential is maximized while serving as broad a community as possible, Rubin Observatory has involved the scientific community at large in the process of setting and refining the details of the observing strategy. The motivation, history, and decision-making process of this strategy optimization are detailed in this paper, giving context to the science-driven proposals and recommendations for the survey strategy included in this Focus Issue.

Abstract

The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) are the largest satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and close enough to allow for a detailed exploration of their structure and formation history. The Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH) is a community Dark Energy Camera (DECam) survey of the Magellanic Clouds using similar to 50 nights to sample over similar to 2400 deg(2) centered on the Clouds at similar to 20% filling factor (but with contiguous coverage in the central regions) and to depths of similar to 24th mag in ugriz. The primary goals of SMASH are to map out the extended stellar peripheries of the Clouds and uncover their complicated interaction and accretion history as well as to derive spatially resolved star formation histories of the central regions and create a "movie" of their past star formation. Here we announce the second SMASH public data release (DR2), which contains all 197 fully calibrated DECam fields including the main body fields in the central regions. The DR2 data are available through the Astro Data Lab hosted by the NSF's National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory. We highlight three science cases that make use of the SMASH DR2 data and will be published in the future: (1) preliminary star formation histories of the LMC, (2) the search for Magellanic star clusters using citizen scientists, and, (3) photometric metallicities of Magellanic Cloud stars using the DECam u-band.

Abstract

This research based anthology is the result of a collaboration between teacher educators, researchers and representatives of teacher organizations in Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Some initial results of the studies introduced in this book have been shared with the international research community in the field at conferences in Europe in 2018 and 2019. In this anthology, we present and discuss significant parts of this material, aiming at stimulating a research-oriented and evidence-based development of induction and mentoring for newly qualified teachers.

Abstract

Purpose: Very old critical ill patients are a rapid expanding group in the ICU. Indications for admission, triage criteria and level of care are frequently discussed for such patients. However, most relevant outcome studies in this group frequently find an increased mortality and a reduced quality of life in survivors. The main objective was to study the impact of frailty compared with other variables with regards to short-term outcome in the very old ICU population. Methods: A transnational prospective cohort study from October 2016 to May 2017 with 30days follow-up was set up by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. In total 311 ICUs from 21 European countries participated. The ICUs included the first consecutive 20 very old (≥80years) patients admitted to the ICU within a 3-month inclusion period. Frailty, SOFA score and therapeutic procedures were registered, in addition to limitations of care. For measurement of frailty the Clinical Frailty Scale was used at ICU admission. The main outcomes were ICU and 30-day mortality and survival at 30days. Results: A total of 5021 patients with a median age of 84years (IQR 81–86years) were included in the final analysis, 2404 (47.9%) were women. Admission was classified as acute in 4215 (83.9%) of the patients. Overall ICU and 30-day mortality rates were 22.1% and 32.6%. During ICU stay 23.8% of the patients did not receive specific ICU procedures: ventilation, vasoactive drugs or renal replacement therapy. Frailty (values ≥5) was found in 43.1% and was independently related to 30-day survival (HR 1.54; 95% CI 1.38–1.73) for frail versus non-frail. Conclusions: Among very old patients (≥80years) admitted to the ICU, the consecutive classes in Clinical Frailty Scale were inversely associated with short-term survival. The scale had a very low number of missing data. These findings provide support to add frailty to the clinical assessment in this patient group. Spesialisering økonomistyring Som følge av fallende inflasjon og gjeldsoppbygging i Europa implementerte Den Europeiske Sentralbanken kvantitative lettelser i mellomrommet 2015 til 2018. Bakgrunnen for dette ukonvensjonelle tiltaket var å gi økt likviditet i kredittmarkedet og styrke økonomien i Eurosonen, i en situasjon hvor det Den Europeiske Sentralbanken allerede hadde brukt opp sitt vanligste virkemiddel gjennom justering av styringsrenten til under null. Kvantitative lettelser ble utført gjennom kjøp av aktiva i markedet, da primært av statsobligasjoner, og bidro til å tvinge markedsrenten enda lavere enn en videre justering av styringsrenten hadde medført. Derpå ble både yield/avkastningskrav ved obligasjoner og rentekostnader redusert for selskaper og husholdninger. I oppgaven er det utført en empirisk analyse med bruk av finansielle data fra selskaper med tilhørighet til børsindeksen Euro STOXX 50 og en kontrollgruppe med selskaper utenfor Eurosonen for å besvare forskningsspørsmålene. Euro STOXX 50 består av de største børsnoterte selskapene i Eurosonen, og representerer derfor også en stor del av økonomien i Eurosonen. I regresjonsanalysen har vi målt finansielle nøkkeltall gjennom én regnskapsbasert indikator ved Return On Assets (ROA) og én markedsbasert indikator ved Price to Book (P/B). Disse to avhengige variablene presenterer både et perspektiv av historiske nøkkeltall (ROA) og et perspektiv av fremtidig nøkkeltall (P/B). Resultatene fra analysen indikerte at: (1) Det ikke finnes grunnlag for at økte kvantitative lettelser gir bedre historiske regnskapstall (ROA) for selskaper i Eurosonen. I kontrast fant vi derimot at ved økte kvantitative lettelser, ble verdien av ROA svekket. (2) Det var en positiv korrelasjon mellom økte kvantitative lettelser og fremtidige markedsbaserte nøkkeltall (P/B). (3) Ved økt verdi av kvantitative lettelser, økte både historiske regnskapstall og de fremtidige markedstallene for selskaper utenfor Eurosonen (kontrollgruppen). Dette til tross for at kontrollgruppen ikke er tilknyttet Den Europeiske Sentralbanken. Abstract Due to declining inflation and buildup of debt in the Eurozone, the European Central Bank implemented quantitative easing in the time period from 2015 to 2018. The intention for the unconventional measure was to provide increased liquidity in the credit market and strengthen the economy of the Eurozone, in a situation where the European Central Bank had already conducted its most common measure through altering the fund rate to below zero. The quantitative easing program was executed through purchase of assets in the market, primarily through government bonds, and helped pushing the interest rate further below. Accordingly, both bond yields and interest costs were reduced for companies and households. In order to answer the research questions, an empirical analysis of financial data belonging to companies in the Euro STOXX 50 and a control group with companies outside the Eurozone was conducted. The Euro STOXX 50 consists of the largest listed companies in the Eurozone, and therefore represents a large part of the economy in the Eurozone. In the regression analysis, we measured financial key figures through one accounting-based indicator by Return On Assets (ROA) and one market-based indicator by Price to Book (P/B). These two dependent variables present both a perspective of historical key figures (ROA) and a perspective of future key figures (P/B). The results of the analysis indicated that: (1) There is no evidence to support that increased quantitative easing will provide better historical accounting figures (ROAs) for companies in the Eurozone. In contrast, we found that by increasing quantitative easing, the value of ROA was weakened. (2) There was a positive correlation between increased quantitative easing and future key figures (P/B). (3) With increased value of quantitative easing, both historical accounting figures and future market figures for companies outside the Eurozone (control group) increased. Abstract

We present a map of the total intrinsic reddening across similar or equal to 34 deg(2) of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) derived using optical (ugriz) and near-infrared (IR; YJK(s)) spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of background galaxies. The reddening map is created using a subsample of 29 274 galaxies with low levels of intrinsic reddening based on the LEPHARE chi(2) minimization SED-fitting routine. We find statistically significant enhanced levels of reddening associated with the main body of the SMC compared with regions in the outskirts [Delta E(B - V) similar or equal to 0.3 mag]. A comparison with literature reddening maps of the SMC shows that, after correcting for differences in the volume of the SMC sampled, there is good agreement between our results and maps created using young stars. In contrast, we find significant discrepancies between our results and maps created using old stars or based on longer wavelength far-IR dust emission that could stem from biased samples in the former and uncertainties in the far-IR emissivity and the optical properties of the dust grains in the latter. This study represents one of the first large-scale categorizations of extragalactic sources behind the SMC and as such we provide the LEPHARE outputs for our full sample of similar to 500 000 sources. © 2020 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society

Abstract

The periphery of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) can unlock important information regarding galaxy formation and evolution in interacting systems. Here, we present a detailed study of the extended stellar structure of the SMC using deep colour-magnitude diagrams, obtained as part of the Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH). Special care was taken in the decontamination of our data from Milky Way (MW) foreground stars, including from foreground globular clusters NGC 362 and 47 Tuc. We derived the SMC surface brightness using a `conservative' approach from which we calculated the general parameters of the SMC, finding a staggered surface brightness profile. We also traced the fainter outskirts by constructing a stellar density profile. This approach, based on stellar counts of the oldest main-sequence turn-off stars, uncovered a tidally disrupted stellar feature that reaches as far out as 12 deg from the SMC centre. We also serendipitously found a faint feature of unknown origin located at similar to 14 deg from the centre of the SMC and that we tentatively associated with a more distant structure. We compared our results to in-house simulations of a 1 x 10(9) M-circle dot SMC, finding that its elliptical shape can be explained by its tidal disruption under the combined presence of the MW and the Large Magellanic Cloud. Finally, we found that the older stellar populations show a smooth profile while the younger component presents a jump in the density followed by a flat profile, confirming the heavily disturbed nature of the SMC. © 2020 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society

139. The Recent LMCâ€"SMC Collision: Timing and Impact Parameter Constraints from Comparison of Gaia LMC Disk Kinematics and N -body Simulations.

Abstract

We present analysis of the proper-motion (PM) field of the red clump stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) disk using the Gaia Early Data Release 3 catalog. Using a kinematic model based on old stars with 3D velocity measurements, we construct the residual PM field by subtracting the center-of-mass motion and internal rotation motion components. The residual PM field reveals asymmetric patterns, including larger residual PMs in the southern disk. Comparisons of the observed residual PM field with those of five numerical simulations of an LMC analog that is subject to the tidal fields of the Milky Way and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) show that the present-day LMC is not in dynamical equilibrium. We find that both the observed level of disk heating (PM residual rms of 0.057 ± 0.002 mas yrâˆ'1) and kinematic asymmetry are not reproduced by Milky Way tides or if the SMC impact parameter is larger than the size of the LMC disk. This measured level of disk heating provides a novel and important method to validate numerical simulations of the LMCâ€"SMC interaction history. Our results alone put constraints on an impact parameter ≲10 kpc and impact timing <250 Myr. When adopting the impact timing constraint of ∼140â€"160 Myr ago from previous studies, our results suggest that the most recent SMC encounter must have occurred with an impact parameter of ∼5 kpc. We also find consistent radial trends in the kinematically and geometrically derived disk inclination and line-of-node position angles, indicating a common origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

140. The Magellanic Clouds with LSST

Abstract

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will provide a massive optical imaging dataset covering roughly half the sky with over ten years of repeated observation in ugrizY. The telescope is under construction, with the survey scheduled to enter full operations in 2023. LSST has a unique role to play in surveys of the Clouds. First, its large AΩ can probe the thousands of square degrees that comprise the extended periphery of the Magellanic Clouds with unprecedented completeness and depth, allowing us to detect and map their extended disks, stellar halos, and debris from interactions with high fidelity. Second,its ability to map the entire main bodies in only a few pointings can allow us to identify and classify their extensive variable source populations with high time and areal coverage, discovering, for example, extragalactic planets, rare variables and transients, and light echoes from explosive events that occurred thousands of years ago. I will describe the science case for observing the Magellanic Clouds with LSST and the proposed adjustments to the LSST survey footprint and observing cadence that will be needed to ensure that LSST Magellanic Clouds science may be achieved.

Abstract

Minimum light colors of RR Lyrae stars (which are both standard color markers as well as standard candles) measured with the DECam imager on the Blanco 4m telescope at CTIO in select fields in the Galactic bulge are used to independently derive the extinction law in these visible passbands. Variations in the color-color diagrams on sub-arc-minute scales allow the construction of reddening maps that can be anchored to the RR Lyrae color scale, yielding reddening and extinction corrected color-magnitude diagrams of unprecedented clarity that reveal interesting features and characteristics of stellar populations in the bulge, including a very blue horizontal branch and surprisingly young stars with super-solar abundance. The extinction corrected RR Lyrae stars also trace the density distribution of the ancient stars, and structure in the reddening maps show remnants from the past.

Abstract

Høsten 2018 ble det innledet et forsøk med å opprette stillinger for lærere i kombinasjonsstillinger knyttet til grunnskolelærerutdanningen ved Universitetet i Sørøst-Norge (USN). De som ble tilsatt, arbeider til daglig i grunnskolen og har i de fleste tilfellene erfaring som praksislærere. Prosjektet er ett av flere tiltak som er knyttet til en utviklingsavtale mellom USN og Kunnskapsdepartementet, som har som formål å videreutvikle og styrke samarbeidet mellom universitetet og praksisfeltet innenfor universitetets profesjonsutdanninger. For å koordinere og lede dette arbeidet ble det opprettet en prosjektorganisasjon kalt USN Profesjon. USN Profesjon ledes av Kristin Barstad, og ordningen med kombinasjonsstillinger er ett av fire hovedsatsingsområder som omfatter både lærerutdanningene og helse- og sosialfagutdanningene ved USN. Denne rapporten tar for seg ordningen med kombinasjonsstillinger slik den har blitt gjennomført i den femårige grunnskolelærerutdanningen ved USN. Arbeidet er gjennomført i samråd med Arild Hovland, som er dekan ved Fakultet for humaniora, idrett og lærerutdanning, og Anne Fængsrud, som er visedekan for lærerutdanningen. Det empiriske grunnlaget for rapporten består i hovedsak av fokusgruppeintervjuer med lærere som er tilsatt i kombinasjonsstillinger ved hvert de fire studiestedene ved USN som tilbyr grunnskolelærerutdanning, og programkoordinatorene ved de aktuelle studiestedene. Vi retter en stor takk til alle de som på ulike måter har gjort arbeidet med denne rapporten mulig, og håper den vil stimulere til videre drøfting og kvalitetsutvikling av den femårige grunnskolelærerutdanningen ved USN.

Abstract

Background: We aimed to evaluate differences in outcome between patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) after elective versus acute surgery in a multinational cohort of very old patients (80 years; VIP). Predictors of mortality, with special emphasis on frailty, were assessed. Methods: In total, 5063 VIPs were induded in this analysis, 922 were admitted after elective surgery or intervention, 4141 acutely, with 402 after acute surgery. Differences were calculated using Mann-Whitney-U test and Wilcoxon test. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to assess associations with mortality. Results: Compared patients admitted after acute surgery, patients admitted after elective surgery suffered less often from frailty as defined as CFS (28% vs 46%; p < 0.001), evidenced lower SOFA scores (4 +/- 5 vs 7 +/- 7; p < 0.001). Presence of frailty (CFS >4) was associated with significantly increased mortality both in elective surgery patients (7% vs 12%; p = 0.01), in acute surgery (7% vs 12%; p = 0.02). Conclusions: VIPs admitted to ICU after elective surgery evidenced favorable outcome over patients after acute surgery even after correction for relevant confounders. Frailty might be used to guide clinicians in risk stratification in both patients admitted after elective and acute surgery.
