Near-infrared (NIR) luminescent lanthanide complexes hold great promise for practical applications, as their optical properties have several complementary advantages over organic fluorophores and semiconductor nanoparticles. The fundamental challenge for lanthanide luminescence is their sensitization through suitable chromophores. The use of the metallacrown (MC) motif is an innovative strategy to arrange several organic sensitizers at a well-controlled distance from a lanthanide cation. Herein we report a series of lanthanide “encapsulated sandwich” MC complexes of the form Ln3+ [12-MC(Zn(II),quinHA)-4]2[24-MC(Zn(II),quinHA)-8] (Ln3+ [Zn(II)MC(quinHA)]) in which the MC framework is formed by the self-assembly of Zn2+ ions and tetradentate chromophoric ligands based on quinaldichydroxamic acid (quinHA). A first-generation of luminescent MCs was presented previously but was limited due to excitation wavelengths in the UV. We report here that through the design of the chromophore of the MC assembly, we have significantly shifted the absorption wavelength toward lower energy (450 nm). In addition to this near-visible inter- and/or intraligand charge transfer absorption, Ln3+ [Zn(II)MC(quinHA)] exhibits remarkably high quantum yields, long luminescence lifetimes (CD3OD; Yb3+, QLn(L) = 2.88(2)%, τobs = 150.7(2) μs; Nd3+, QLn(L) = 1.35(1)%, τobs = 4.11(3) μs; Er3+, QLn(L) = 3.60(6)·10–2%, τobs = 11.40(3) μs), and excellent photostability. Quantum yields of Nd3+ and Er3+ MCs in the solid state and in deuterated solvents, upon excitation at low energy, are the highest values among NIR-emitting lanthanide complexes containing C–H bonds. The versatility of the MC strategy allows modifications in the excitation wavelength and absorptivity through the appropriate design of the ligand sensitizer, providing a highly efficient platform with tunable properties.

Cocrystallization of C70 with bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (ET) produces two different solvates, C70·ET·C6H6 and 2C70·2ET·CS2, which show distinctly different overlap between the fullerene and ET molecules.

N-substituted pyrido[4,3-d]pyrimidines are heterocycles which exhibit the asymmetric hydrogen bonding codes of both guanine and cytosine at 60° angles to each other, such that the molecules self-organize unambiguously into a cyclic hexamer, assembled via 18 intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The synthesis is straightforward and can be concluded in six steps from the commercially available malononitrile dimer. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the supermacrocyclic structure shows an undulating disk with a ca. 10.5 Å cavity, the centers of which do not overlap sufficiently to describe a channel in the solid state. However, AFM, SEM, and TEM imaging in solution reveals the formation of 1D nanostructures in agreement with their self-assembly into rosette supermacrocycles, which then stack linearly to form rosette nanotubes.

Copper complexes of the deprotonated tridentate ligand, N-2-methylthiophenyl-2'-pyridinecarboxamide (HL1), were synthesized and characterized as part of our investigation into the reduction of copper(II) o-nitrito complexes into the related copper nitric oxide complexes and subsequent evolution of NO(g) such as occurs in the enzyme copper nitrite reductase. Our studies afforded the complexes [(L1)Cu(II)Cl]n (1), [(L1)Cu(II)(ONO)] (2), [(L1)Cu(II)(H2O)](ClO4)·H2O (3·H2O), [(L1)Cu(II)(CH3OH)](ClO4) (4), [(L1)Cu(II)(CH3CO2)]·H2O (5·H2O), and [Co(Cp)2][(L1)Cu(I)(NO2)(CH3CN)] (6). X-ray crystal structure determinations revealed distorted square-pyramidal coordination geometry around Cu(II) ion in 1-5. Substitution of the H2O of 3 by nitrite quantitatively forms 2, featuring the κ(2)-O,O binding mode of NO2(-) to Cu(II). Reduction of 2 generates two Cu(I) species, one with κ(1)-O and other with the κ(1)-N bonded NO2(-) group. The Cu(I) analogue of 2, compound 6, was synthesized. The FTIR spectrum of 6 reveals the presence of κ(1)-N bonded NO2(-). Constant potential electrolysis corresponding to Cu(II) → Cu(I) reduction of a CH3CN solution of 2 followed by reaction with acids, CH3CO2H or HClO4 generates 5 or 3, and NO(g), identified electrochemically. The isolated Cu(I) complex 6 independently evolves one equivalent of NO(g) upon reaction with acids. Production of NO(g) was confirmed by forming [Co(TPP)NO] in CH2Cl2 (λ(max) in CH2Cl2: 414 and 536 nm, ν(NO) = 1693 cm(-1)).

One monocarbonyl and one dicarbonyl complex of ruthenium(II), namely, [Ru(Cl)(CO)(qmtpm)(PPh3)]BF4 (2) and [Ru(Cl)(CO)2(qmtpm)]ClO4 (3), derived from the tridentate ligand 2-quinoline-N-(2'-methylthiophenyl)methyleneimine (qmtpm) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The qmtpm ligand binds in a meridional fashion in these carbonyl complexes, and in 3, the two carbon monoxide (CO) ligands are cis to each other. Solutions of 2 in ethanol, chloroform, or acetonitrile rapidly release CO upon illumination with low-power (3-15 mW) light in the 300-450 nm range. Loss of CO from 2 brings about a dramatic color change from yellow to magenta because of the formation of [Ru(Cl)(MeCN)(qmtpm)(PPh3)]BF4 (4). In acetonitrile, photorelease of CO from 3 under 360 nm light occurs in two steps, and the violet photoproduct [Ru(Cl)(MeCN)2(qmtpm)](+) upon reaction with Ag(+) and PPh3 affords red [Ru(MeCN)2(qmtpm)(PPh3)](ClO4)2 (5). The structure of 5 has also been determined by X-ray crystallography. Reduced myoglobin assay confirms that 2 and 3 act as photoactive CO-releasing molecules (photoCORMs) that deliver 1 and 2 equiv of CO, respectively. The results of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT studies confirm that electronic transitions from molecular orbitals with predominantly Ru-CO character to ligand-based π* orbitals facilitate CO release from these two photoCORMs. Complexes 2-5 have provided an additional opportunity to analyze the roles of the ancillary ligands, namely, PPh3, Cl(-), and MeCN, in shifting the positions of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer bands and the associated sensitivity of the two photoCORMs to different wavelengths of light. Collectively, the results provide helpful hints toward the future design of photoCORMs that release CO upon exposure to visible light.

Although fullerenes were discovered nearly three decades ago, the mechanism of their formation remains a mystery. Many versions of the classic 'bottom-up' formation mechanism have been advanced, starting with C2 units that build up to form chains and rings of carbon atoms and ultimately form those well-known isolated fullerenes (for example, I(h)-C60). In recent years, evidence from laboratory and interstellar observations has emerged to suggest a 'top-down' mechanism, whereby small isolated fullerenes are formed via shrinkage of giant fullerenes generated from graphene sheets. Here, we present molecular structural evidence for this top-down mechanism based on metal carbide metallofullerenes M2C2@C1(51383)-C84 (M = Y, Gd). We propose that the unique asymmetric C1(51383)-C84 cage with destabilizing fused pentagons is a preserved 'missing link' in the top-down mechanism, and in well-established rearrangement steps can form many well-known, high-symmetry fullerene structures that account for the majority of solvent-extractable metallofullerenes.

Symmetrical and unsymmetrical dithiocarbamato pyridine solvated and non-solvated complexes of indium(III) with the general formula [In(S2CNRR')3]·n(py) [where py = pyridine; R,R' = Cy, n = 2 (1); R,R' = (i)Pr, n = 1.5 (2); NRR' = Pip, n = 0.5 (3) and R = Bz, R' = Me, n = 0 (4)] have been synthesized. The compositions, structures and properties of these complexes have been studied by means of microanalysis, IR and (1)H-NMR spectroscopy, X-ray single crystal and thermogravimetric (TG/DTG) analyses. The applicability of these complexes as single source precursors (SSPs) for the deposition of β-In2S3 thin films on fluorine-doped SnO2 (FTO) coated conducting glass substrates by aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) at temperatures of 300, 350 and 400 °C is studied. All films have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) for the detection of phase and stoichiometry of the deposit. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies reveal that precursors (1)-(4), irrespective of different metal ligand design, generate comparable morphologies of β-In2S3 thin films at different temperatures. Direct band gap energies of 2.2 eV have been estimated from the UV-vis spectroscopy for the β-In2S3 films fabricated from precursors (1) and (4). The photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of β-In2S3 were confirmed by recording the current-voltage plots under light and dark conditions. The plots showed anodic photocurrent densities of 1.25 and 0.65 mA cm(-2) at 0.23 V vs. Ag/AgCl for the β-In2S3 films made at 400 and 350 °C from the precursors (1) and (4), respectively. The photoelectrochemical performance indicates that the newly synthesised precursors are highly useful in fabricating β-In2S3 electrodes for solar energy harvesting and optoelectronic application.

Cocrystallization of Hg{Co(CO)4}2 with C60 produces Hg{Co(CO)4}2·C60·toluene in which the geometry of the Hg{Co(CO)4}2 molecule is rearranged to fit between the remarkably well ordered fullerenes.

The tetraethylammonium salt of the transition-metal complex FeCl4(-) has been examined using inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) with 1.5 meV resolution (12 cm(-1)) at 21.747 keV. This sample serves as a feasibility test for more elaborate transition-metal complexes. The IXS spectra were compared with previously recorded IR, Raman, and nuclear resonant vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) spectra, revealing the same normal modes but with less strict selection rules. Calculations with a previously derived Urey-Bradley force field were used to simulate the expected Q and orientation dependence of the IXS intensities. The relative merits of IXS, compared to other photon-based vibrational spectroscopies such as NRVS, Raman, and IR, are discussed.

The first stable α-oxyoxonium species have been synthesized and characterized. Strong donation of nonbonding electrons on oxygen into the adjacent σ*(C-O(+)) orbital was predicted by modeling to result in unheard of carbon-oxygen bond lengths. The kinetic stability of the triquinane ring system provides a platform upon which to study these otherwise elusive species, which are evocative of intermediates on the acetalization reaction pathway. Crystallographic analysis of the α-hydroxy and α-methoxy oxatriquinane triflates reveals 1.658 and 1.619 Å C-O(+) bond lengths, respectively, the former of which is a new record for the C-O bond.

A new hexakis-fullerene adduct with two 4,5-diazafluorene groups strategically located at trans-1 positions to allow linear polymerization was selectively synthesized in very high yield. By reaction with Ag(triflate), a one dimensional metal-organic coordination polymer was obtained.

The complexes, Pb(ChAr(Pri4))2 (Ch = O (1), S (2); Ar(Pri4) = C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-Pr(i)2)2) were synthesized by alcoholysis and salt metathesis routes and represent the first fully characterized monomeric, two-coordinate, lead dichalcogenolates in the solid state. Structural studies showed that the S-Pb-S angle (77.21(4)°) is about 22° narrower than the corresponding O-Pb-O angle. (207)Pb NMR and electronic spectroscopy show that the separation between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) decreases from the bisaryloxo plumbylene to the bisthiolato derivative. Reaction of LiSAr(Me6) with PbBr2 in a 2:1 ratio led not to Pb(SAr(Me6))2, but to a mixture of the monothiolato lead(II) complex, {Pb(Br)(μ-SAr(Me6))}2 (3) and the lithium tristhiolato plumbate, LiPb(SAr(Me6))3 (4). 3 and 4 were isolated and purified by fractional recrystallization, and both were characterized by X-ray crystallography and spectroscopic studies.

A new dibenzotetraaza[14]annulene bearing two 3,3-dimethylindolenine fragments at the meso positions (LH(2)), has been synthesized through a nontemplate method. X-ray crystallography shows that the whole molecule is planar. The basicity of the indolenine ring permits the macrocycle to be protonated external to the core and form LH(4)(2+)·2Cl(-). Yet another structural modification having strong C-H···π interactions was found in the chloroform solvate of LH(2). The latter two modifications are accompanied by a degree of nonplanar distortion. The antiaromatic core of the macrocycle can accommodate a number of metal ions, Mn(III), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), to form complexes of [Mn(L)Br], [Mn(L)Cl], [Fe(LH(2))Cl(2)](+)·Cl(-), [Co(L)], [Ni(L)], and [Cu(L)]. In addition, the reaction of LH(2) with the larger Pd(II) ion leads to the formation of [Pd(2)(LH(2))(2)(OAc)(4)] wherein the macrocycle acts as a semiflexible ditopic ligand to coordinate pairs of metal ions via its indolenine N atoms into dinuclear metallocycles. The compounds LH(2), [Co(L)], and [Ni(L)] are isostructural and feature close π-stacking as well as linear chain arrangements in the case of the metal complexes. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements showed thermally induced paramagnetism in [Ni(L)].

Sm@C(2v)(3)-C(80) has been separated from the carbon soot produced by electrical arc vaporization of graphite rods doped with Sm(2)O(3) and purified. Its structure has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction using cocrystals obtained from either Ni(II)(octaethylporphyrin) (Ni(II)(OEP)) to form Sm@C(2v)(3)-C(80)·Ni(II)(OEP)·1.68(toluene)·0.32(benzene) or bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (ET) to produce Sm@C(2v)(3)-C(80)·ET·0.5(toluene). Thus, this study offers the first opportunity to compare a common endohedral fullerene in two different cocrystals. Both cocrystals provide consistent information on the basic structure of Sm@C(2v)(3)-C(80) but show that the distribution of samarium ion sites inside the carbon cage depends upon whether Ni(II)(OEP) or ET is present. The samarium ion is disordered in both structures, but the prominent sites lie slightly off the 2-fold symmetry axis of the cage. Computational studies at the B3LYP level indicate that Sm@C(2v)(3)-C(80) is more stable than any of the other six isomers of Sm@C(80) that obey the isolated pentagon rule (IPR). The surface electrostatic potential of the interacting components in the cocrystals has been examined to identify factors responsible for the ordering of the fullerene cages. The regions of the Ni(II)(OEP) or ET molecules that are closest to the fullerene display negative potential, while the corresponding regions of the endohedral fullerene show positive potential in a consistent fashion in both cocrystals.

The structure of the title compound, C(7)H(6)BNO(3), a new boron heterocycle, prepared by the condensation of (2-ethoxycarbonylphenyl)boronic acid and hydroxylamine, reveals the specific mode of intramolecular condensation between a phenylboronic acid and an ortho hydroxamic acid substituent. The crystal structure shows that dehydration occurs to form a planar oxazaborinine ring possessing both phenol-like B-O-H and lactam functional groups. In the extended structure, intermolecular hydrogen bonding generates a 14-membered ring. To our knowledge, this is the first crystal structure determination involving a six-membered ring that exhibits consecutive B-OH, O, NH, and C=O functional groups.

Four crystalline dimers of the type, Au(I)(2)(μ-PnP)(2)I(2), where PnP is PPh(2)(CH(2))(n)PPh(2) with n = 3, 4, 5, and 6 have been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and by (31)P NMR and infrared spectroscopy. Au(I)(2)(μ-P3P)(2)I(2) and Au(I)(2)(μ-P6P)(2)I(2) are centrosymmetric dimers with the planar Au(I)P(2)I units oriented in antiparallel fashion. Remarkably, noncentrosymmetric Au(I)(2)(μ-P5P)(2)I(2) has its planar Au(I)P(2)I units oriented in parallel manner. Au(I)(2)(μ-P4P)(2)(μ-I)(2) is unique, since it contains four-coordinate gold centers that are bridged by both iodide and diphosphine ligands. All four compounds are luminescent as solids at room temperature. B3LYP, B2PLYP, and spectroscopically oriented configuration interaction (SORCI) calculations have been conducted to give insight into the electronic and geometric structures of the ground and first excited triplet states of the three trigonal-planar complexes. The emission energies for the trigonal planar complexes are more strongly correlated with changes in the Au-I bond length rather than changes in the P-Au-P angle.

Direct reaction of potassium molybdate (with natural abundance Mo or enriched with (92)Mo or (100)Mo) with excess hydrolyzed homocitric acid-γ-lactone in acidic solution resulted in the isolation of a cis-dioxo bis-homocitrato molybdenum(VI) complex, K(2)[*MoO(2)(R,S-H(2)homocit)(2)]·2H(2)O (1) (*Mo=Mo, 1; (92)Mo, 2; (100)Mo, 3; H(4)homocit=homocitric acid-γ-lactone·H(2)O) and K(2)[MoO(2)((18)O-R,S-H(2)homocit)(2)]·2H(2)O (4). The complex has been characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, solid and solution (13)C NMR, and single crystal x-ray diffraction analysis. The molybdenum atom in (1) is quasi-octahedrally coordinated by two cis oxo groups and two bidentate homocitrate ligands. The latter coordinates via its α-alkoxy and α-carboxy groups, while the β- and γ-carboxylic acid groups remain uncomplexed, similar to the coordination mode of homocitrate in the Mo-cofactor of nitrogenase. In the IR spectra, the MoO stretching modes near 900 cm(-1) show 2-3 cm(-1) red- and blue-shifts for the (92)Mo-complex (2) and (100)Mo-complex (3) respectively compared with the natural abundance version (1). At lower frequencies, bands at 553 and 540 cm(-1) are assigned to ν(Mo-O) vibrations involving the alkoxide ligand. At higher frequencies, bands in the 1700-1730 cm(-1) region are assigned to stretching modes of protonated carboxylates. In addition, a band at 1675 cm(-1) was observed that may be analogous to a band seen at 1677 cm(-1) in nitrogenase photolysis studies. The solution behavior of (1) in D(2)O was probed with (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra. An obvious dissociation of homocitrate was found, even though bound to the high valent Mo(VI). This suggests the likely lability of coordinated homocitrate in the FeMo-cofactor with its lower valence Mo(IV)., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.)

The successful preparation and isolation of the mixed-metal endohedral fullerene, LaSc(2)N@I(h)-C(80), and its structural characterization by single-crystal X-ray diffraction are reported. Results from chemically adjusting plasma temperature, energy, and reactivity (CAPTEAR) experiments indicate that a 10 wt % addition of Cu(NO(3))(2)·2.5H(2)O to a mixture of La(2)O(3) and Sc(2)O(3) decreases the amount of C(60) and C(70) found in soot extracts by an order of magnitude. By combining a stoichiometric 2-fold excess of La to Sc atoms in the plasma reactor, an extract containing a greater abundance of LaSc(2)N@I(h)-C(80) relative to Sc(3)N@I(h)-C(80) was obtained. Alternatively, the stir and filter approach (SAFA method) can be used to remove the empty cage fullerenes from a carbon soot sample prepared without using Cu(NO(3))(2)·2.5H(2)O. LaSc(2)N@I(h)-C(80) has been characterized by UV/vis absorption spectroscopy and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Ordered crystals with nearly identical orientations of the endohedral relative to the porphyrin have been obtained by cocrystallization of LaSc(2)N@I(h)-C(80) with either Ni(II)(OEP) or H(2)(OEP). The LaSc(2)N unit is planar, although earlier computations suggested that it would be pyramidal.

Oxatriquinanes are fused, tricyclic oxonium ions that are known to have exceptional stability compared to simple alkyl oxonium salts. C-O bonds in ethers are generally ∼1.43 Å in length, but oxatriquinane has been found to have C-O bond lengths of 1.54 Å. A search of the Cambridge Structural Database turned up no bona fide C-O bond length exceeding this value. Computational modelling of oxatriquinane alongside other alkyl oxonium ions indicated that the electronic consequences of molecular strain were primarily responsible for the observed bond elongation. We also show that substitution of the oxatriquinane ring system with alkyl groups of increasing steric demand pushes the C-O bond to unheard of distances, culminating in a tert-butyl derivative at a predicted 1.60 Å. Chemical synthesis and an X-ray crystallographic study of these compounds validated the results of the modelling work and, finally, an extraordinary 1.622 Å C-O bond was observed in 1,4,7-tri-tert-butyloxatriquinane.

Aquatolide has been reisolated from its natural source, and its structure has been revised on the basis of quantum-chemical NMR calculations, extensive experimental NMR analysis, and crystallography.

Single crystals of three soluble Yb@C(82) isomers, namely, Yb@C(2)(5)-C(82), Yb@C(s)(6)-C(82), and Yb@C(2v)(9)-C(82), cocrystallized with Ni(II)(octaethylporphyrin), allowed accurate crystallographic elucidation of their molecular structures in terms of both cage symmetry and metal location. Multiple metal positions were found in all these isomers, but the major metal sites were found in some specific regions within these cages. Specifically, the Yb(2+) ion prefers to reside close to a hexagonal ring in Yb@C(2)(5)-C(82) and Yb@C(2v)(9)-C(82) but a [5,6,6]-junction carbon atom in Yb@C(s)(6)-C(82). Theoretical calculations at the B3LYP level revealed that these metal positions all correspond to energy minima from the electrostatic potential maps and give rise to the most stable configurations of these Yb@C(82) isomers. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that this is the first report on X-ray crystallographic studies of such metallofullerenes with the popular C(2v)(9)-C(82) encapsulating a divalent metal ion, described as M(2+)@[C(2v)(9)-C(82)](2-).

We report the X-ray crystal structure of TMS(4)-TBQ with C(60) and analyse their interaction using a sphere in a cone model.

Functionalization of endohedral metallofullerenes has been shown to differ depending on photochemical or thermal pathways. We report that Lu(3)N@I(h)-C(80) reacts with thermally generated bis(2,6-diethylphenyl)silylene with high selectivity and forms monosilylated derivative 1b. Unexpectedly, 1b undergoes photochemical conversion to afford isomer 1a under ambient light. These adducts were characterized using NMR, visible-near-IR spectroscopy, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Single-crystal X-ray structure determination of 1a reveals a rare example of an open 1,2-adduct at the [5,6]-ring junction of the I(h)-C(80) cage. The electrochemical study reveals that the redox potentials of 1a and 1b are shifted cathodically compared to those of pristine Lu(3)N@I(h)-C(80) and that monosilylation is effective to fine-tune the electronic properties of endohedral metallofullerenes as well as empty fullerenes. Density functional theory calculations were also performed, which provide a theoretical basis for the structures and the behavior of the encapsulated Lu(3)N cluster.

Three isomers of Sm@C(82) that are soluble in organic solvents were obtained from the carbon soot produced by vaporization of hollow carbon rods doped with Sm(2)O(3)/graphite powder in an electric arc. These isomers were numbered as Sm@C(82)(I), Sm@C(82)(II), and Sm@C(82)(III) in order of their elution times from HPLC chromatography on a Buckyprep column with toluene as the eluent. The identities of isomers, Sm@C(82)(I) as Sm@C(s)(6)-C(82), Sm@C(82)(II) as Sm@C(3v)(7)-C(82), and Sm@C(82)(III) as Sm@C(2)(5)-C(82), were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction on cocrystals formed with Ni(octaethylporphyrin). For endohedral fullerenes like La@C(82), which have three electrons transferred to the cage to produce the M(3+)@(C(82))(3-) electronic distribution, generally only two soluble isomers (e.g., La@C(2v)(9)-C(82) (major) and La@C(s)(6)-C(82) (minor)) are observed. In contrast, with samarium, which generates the M(2+)@(C(82))(2-) electronic distribution, five soluble isomers of Sm@C(82) have been detected, three in this study, the other two in two related prior studies. The structures of the four Sm@C(82) isomers that are currently established are Sm@C(2)(5)-C(82), Sm@C(s)(6)-C(82), Sm@C(3v)(7)-C(82), and Sm@C(2v)(9)-C(82). All of these isomers obey the isolated pentagon rule (IPR) and are sequentially interconvertable through Stone-Wales transformations.

The reaction of an organic azide with an endohedral metallofullerene has been investigated for the first time. Isomeric [5,6]- and [6,6]-azafulleroids can be obtained from the thermal reaction of Sc(3)N@I(h)-C(80) with 4-isopropoxyphenyl azide, while photoirradiation leads exclusively to the [6,6]-azafulleroid. An unprecedented thermal interconversion between the two isomeric azafulleroids has also been discovered.

Seven bis-Ni(II) complexes of a N(2)S donor set ligand have been synthesized and examined for their ability to stabilize Ni(0), Ni(I), Ni(II) and Ni(III) oxidation states. Compounds 1-5 consist of modifications of the pyridine ring of the tridentate Schiff base ligand, 2-pyridyl-N-(2'-methylthiophenyl)methyleneimine ((X)L1), where X = 6-H, 6-Me, 6-p-ClPh, 6-Br, 5-Br; compound 6 is the reduced amine form (L2); compound 7 is the amide analog (L3). The compounds are perchlorate salts except for 7, which is neutral. Complexes 1 and 3-7 have been structurally characterized. Their coordination geometry is distorted octahedral. In the case of 6, the tridentate ligand coordinates in a facial manner, whereas the remaining complexes display meridional coordination. Due to substitution of the pyridine ring of (X)L1, the Ni-N(py) distances for 1~5 < 3 < 4 increase and UV-vis λ(max) values corresponding to the (3)A(2g)(F)→(3)T(2g)(F) transition show an increasing trend 1~5 < 2 < 3 < 4. Cyclic voltammetry of 1-5 reveals two quasi-reversible reduction waves that correspond to Ni(II)→Ni(I) and Ni(I)→Ni(0) reduction. The E(1/2) for the Ni(II)/Ni(I) couple decreases as 1 > 2 > 3 > 4. Replacement of the central imine N donor in 1 by amine 6 or amide 7 N donors reveals that complex 6 in CH(3)CN exhibits an irreversible reductive response at E(pc) = -1.28 V, E(pa) = +0.25 V vs saturated calomel electrode (SCE). In contrast, complex 7 shows a reversible oxidation wave at E(1/2) = +0.84 V (ΔE(p) = 60 mV) that corresponds to Ni(II)→Ni(III). The electrochemically generated Ni(III) species, [(L3)(2)Ni(III)](+) is stable, showing a new UV-vis band at 470 nm. EPR measurements have also been carried out.

The remarkable, vapor-induced transformation of the yellow polymorphs of [(C(6)H(11)NC)(2)Au(I)](AsF(6)) and [(C(6)H(11)NC)(2)Au(I)](PF(6)) into the colorless forms are reported along with related studies of the crystallization of these polymorphs. Although the interconversion of these polymorphs is produced by vapor exposure, molecules of the vapor are not incorporated into the crystals. Thus, our observations may have broad implications regarding the formation and persistence of other crystal polymorphs where issues of stability and reproducibility of formation exist. Crystallographic studies show that the colorless polymorphs, which display blue luminescence, are isostructural and consist of linear chains of gold(I) cations that self-associate through aurophilic interactions. Significantly, the yellow polymorph of [(C(6)H(11)NC)(2)Au(I)](AsF(6)) is not isostructural with the yellow polymorph of [(C(6)H(11)NC)(2)Au(I)](PF(6)). Both yellow polymorphs exhibit green emission and have the gold cations arranged into somewhat bent chains with significantly closer Au···Au separations than are seen in the colorless counterparts. Luminescence differences in these polymorphs clearly enhance the ability to detect and monitor their phase stability.

Two isomers of Sm@C(92) and four isomers of Sm@C(94) were isolated from carbon soot obtained by electric arc vaporization of carbon rods doped with Sm(2)O(3). Analysis of the structures by single-crystal X-ray diffraction on cocrystals formed with Ni(II)(octaethylporphyrin) reveals the identities of two of the Sm@C(92) isomers: Sm@C(92)(I), which is the more abundant isomer, is Sm@C(1)(42)-C(92), and Sm@C(92)(II) is Sm@C(s)(24)-C(92). The structure of the most abundant form of the four isomers of Sm@C(94), Sm@C(94)(I), is Sm@C(3v)(134)-C(94), which utilizes the same cage isomer as the previously known Ca@C(3v)(134)-C(94) and Tm@C(3v)(134)-C(94). All of the structurally characterized isomers obey the isolated pentagon rule. While the four Sm@C(90) and five isomers of Sm@C(84) belong to common isomerization maps that allow these isomers to be interconverted through Stone-Wales transformations, Sm@C(1)(42)-C(92) and Sm@C(s)(24)-C(92) are not related to each other by any set of Stone-Wales transformations. UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and computational studies indicate that Sm@C(1)(42)-C(92) is more stable than Sm@C(s)(24)-C(92) but possesses a smaller HOMO-LUMO gap. While the electronic structures of these endohedrals can be formally described as Sm(2+)@C(2n)(2-), the net charge transferred to the cage is less than two due to some back-donation of electrons from π orbitals of the cage to the metal ion.

A non isolated pentagon rule metallic sulfide clusterfullerene, Sc(2)S@C(s)(10528)-C(72), has been isolated from a raw mixture of Sc(2)S@C(2n) (n = 35-50) obtained by arc-discharging graphite rods packed with Sc(2)O(3) and graphite powder under an atmosphere of SO(2) and helium. Multistage HPLC methods were utilized to isolate and purify the Sc(2)S@C(72). The purified Sc(2)S@C(s)(10528)-C(72) was characterized by mass spectrometry, UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystallographic analysis unambiguously elucidated that the C(72) fullerene cage violates the isolated pentagon rule, and the cage symmetry was assigned to C(s)(10528)-C(72). The electrochemical behavior of Sc(2)S@C(s)(10528)-C(72) shows a major difference from those of Sc(2)S@C(s)(6)-C(82) and Sc(2)S@C(3v)(8)-C(82) as well as the other metallic clusterfullerenes. Computational studies show that the Sc(2)S cluster transfers four electrons to the C(72) cage and C(s)(10528)-C(72) is the most stable cage isomer for both empty C(72)(4-) and Sc(2)S@C(72), among the many possibilities. The structural differences between the reported fullerenes with C(72) cages are discussed, and it is concluded that both the transfer of four electrons to the cage and the geometrical requirements of the encaged Sc(2)S cluster play important roles in the stabilization of the C(s)(10528)-C(72) cage.

Three isomers with the composition Sm@C(84) were isolated from carbon soot obtained by electric arc vaporization of carbon rods doped with Sm(2)O(3). These isomers were labeled Sm@C(84)(I), Sm@C(84)(II), and Sm@C(84)(III) in order of their elution times during chromatography on a Buckyprep column with toluene as the eluent. Analysis of the structures by single-crystal X-ray diffraction on cocrystals formed with Ni(II)(octaethylporphyrin) reveals the identities of two of the isomers: Sm@C(84)(I) is Sm@C(2)(13)-C(84), and Sm@C(84)(III) is Sm@ D(3d)(19)-C(84). Sm@C(84)(II) can be identified as Sm@C(2)(11)-C(84) on the basis of the similarity of its UV/vis/NIR spectrum with that of Yb@C(2)(11)-C(84), whose carbon cage has been characterized by (13)C NMR spectroscopy. Comparison of the three Sm@C(84) isomers identified in this project with two prior reports of the preparation and isolation of isomers of Sm@C(84) indicate that five different Sm@C(84) isomers have been found and that the source of samarium used for the generation of fullerene soot is important in determining which of these isomers form.

Solutions containing the components Au(+), dpae (dpae is 1,2 bis-(diphenylarsino)ethane), and X(-) (X is Cl, Br, or I) can produce two different types of crystals with the composition Au(2)(μ-dpae)X(2): colorless blocks and colorless needles. Crystallographic studies of these crystals show that they are polymorphs with different structural motifs. In the α-polymorphs, which are isostructural, individual molecules of Au(2)(μ-dpae)X(2) form discrete dimers through two identical Au···Au contacts. In the β-polymorphs, which each have unique crystallographic parameters, the Au(2)(μ-dpae)X(2) molecules assemble into polymeric chains through aurophilic interactions. The Au···Au contacts in the α-polymorph (3.1163(2), 3.1064(3), and 3.0842(2) Å for Cl, Br, I, respectively) are somewhat shorter than those in the β-polymorph (3.1668(3), 3.1042(8), and 3.1046(2) for Cl, Br, I respectively). The systematic study we now report shows an increase in the strength of this aurophilic interaction for the α-form in the series X = Cl < Br < I, which is in good agreement with theoretical studies by Pyykkö and his co-workers.

A reversible, broad, order-disorder phase transition in the structure of C(60)·4benzene has been observed to take place with an inflection point at 134 K. In the low-temperature structure fullerene disorder is removed, although the average atomic displacement parameters differ for the two C(60) molecules in the asymmetric unit. Strategies for the formation of carbon-carbon bonds from the α-thioaryl carbonyl products of substituted lactams are described. Although direct functionalization is possible, a two step process of oxidation and magnesium-sulfoxide exchange has proven optimal. The oxidation step results in the formation of two diastereomers that exhibit markedly different levels of stability toward elimination, which is rationalized on the basis of quantum mechanical calculations and X-ray crystallography. Treatment of the sulfoxide with i-PrMgCl results in the formation of a magnesium enolate that will undergo an intramolecular Michael addition reaction to form two new stereogenic centers. The relationship between the substitution patterns of the sulfoxide substrate and the efficiency of the magnesium exchange reaction are also described.

Four copper complexes of a tridentate Schiff base ligand, 2-pyridyl-N-(2'-methylthiophenyl) methyleneimine, L(1) have been synthesized. All theses species, namely, [L(1)Cu(2)(SCN)(3)](n) (1), [Cu(SCN)(CH(3)CN)](n) (3), [(L(1))Cu(N(3))(Cl)] (4) and [(L(1))Cu(N(3))(SCN)] (5) have been structurally characterized. Complex 1 in acetonitrile promotes cycloaddition of a Cu(II) bound SCN(-) ion to L(1) that exclusively and stoichiometrically forms a mesoionic imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine, namely, 3-(imino-N'-2-methylthiophenyl)imidazo[1,5-a]pyridinium-1-thiolate (2) and a thiocyanato bridged Cu(i) complex, [Cu(SCN)(CH(3)CN)](n) (3). The X-ray crystal structure of 1 confirms the presence of square-pyramidal Cu(II) and tetrahedral Cu(I) ions in N(3)S(2) and N(2)S(2) coordination environments, respectively, bridged to each other via thiocyanate anion. The Cu(II) ions are bonded to a tridentate ligand L(1) and two SCN(-) ions occupy the remaining equatorial and an axial coordination site to adopt a square-pyramidal coordination geometry. To investigate which SCN(-) ion, axially or equatorially bound to Cu(II) center, underwent cycloaddition to L(1) to form 2, two mononuclear Cu(II) complexes 4 and 5 have been synthesized and their reactivity towards externally added KSCN was studied. The molecular structures of 4 and 5 feature a meridionally bound L(1) and an azide ion (N(3)(-)) in the square plane, while a Cl(-) or SCN(-) ion are occupying the axial site, respectively, to fulfill square-pyramidal coordination geometry. Complex 4 reacts with SCN(-) ion to form 5. That an MeCN solution of 5 itself, or of 5 in the presence of KSCN, does not produce 2, supports that possibly the Cu(II) bound equatorial SCN(-) ion is responsible for cycloaddition to L(1). Dark purple solid 2 has also been prepared (turnover number ~4 or 41% yield) efficiently following an alternative and easier one-pot synthesis procedure, that is from a mixture of KSCN and L(1) in the presence of a catalytic amount of anhydrous CuCl(2) (10 mol%) in MeCN in air. The X-ray crystal structure, (1)H NMR spectrum and solution conductivity measurements strongly support that 2 is mesoionic. An MeCN solution of 2 fluoresces at room temperature upon excitation at 240 nm with an emission maximum λ(em) at 470 nm, associated with a quantum yield of 0.16 with respect to a standard Rhodamine-6G fluorophore., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2011)

The carbon soot obtained by electric arc vaporization of carbon rods doped with Sm(2)O(3) contains a series of monometallic endohedral fullerenes, Sm@C(2n), along with smaller quantities of the dimetallic endohedrals Sm(2)@C(2n) with n = 44, 45, 46, and the previously described Sm(2)@D(3d)(822)-C(104). The compounds Sm(2)@C(2n) with n = 44, 45, 46 were purified by high pressure liquid chromatography on several different columns. For endohedral fullerenes that contain two metal atoms, there are two structural possibilities: a normal dimetallofullerene, M(2)@C(2n), or a metal carbide, M(2)(μ-C(2))@C(2n-2). For structural analysis, the individual Sm(2)@C(2n) endohedral fullerenes were cocrystallized with Ni(octaethylporphyrin), and the products were examined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These data identified the three new endohedrals as normal dimetallofullerenes and not as carbides: Sm(2)@D(2)(35)-C(88), Sm(2)@C(1)(21)-C(90), and Sm(2)@D(3)(85)-C(92). All four of the known Sm(2)@C(2n) endohedral fullerenes have cages that obey the isolated pentagon rule (IPR). As the cage size expands in this series, so do the distances between the variously disordered samarium atoms. Since the UV/vis/NIR spectra of Sm(2)@D(2)(35)-C(88) and Sm(2)@C(1)(21)-C(90) are very similar to those of Gd(2)C(90) and Gd(2)C(92), we conclude that Gd(2)C(90) and Gd(2)C(92) are the carbides Gd(2)(μ-C(2))@D(2)(35)-C(88) and Gd(2)(μ-C(2))@C(1)(21)-C(90), respectively.

We report the alkoxylation of methyl-substituted quinoxalino[2,3-c]cinnolines to give acetals and orthoesters in high yields. Routes to the precursors of this alkoxylation reaction as well as other quinoxalino[2,3-c]cinnoline and their 5-oxide derivatives are reported. Most of these quinoxalino[2,3-c]cinnolines were prepared by cyclization of the corresponding 2-amino-3-(2-nitrophenyl)quinoxaline, which, in turn, result from an unusual Beirut reaction from benzofurazan oxides plus 2-nitrobenzylcyanides. Mechanistic explanations for these intriguing reactions are presented.

An extensive series of soluble dilanthanum endohedral fullerenes that extends from La(2)C(90) to La(2)C(138) has been discovered. The most abundant of these, the nanotubular La(2)@D(5)(450)-C(100), has been isolated in pure form and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

A series of naphthalenyl-substituted arenediynes were prepared to examine photochemical reactivity. For naphthalen-1-ylethynyl arenediyne, 350 nm photolysis resulted in a tandem [2 + 2] photocycloaddition to afford cyclobutene adducts. For naphthalen-2-ylethynyl derivatives, electron-donating methoxy substituents were found to facilitate C(1)-C(6) Bergman cyclization at 300 nm. Solutions containing the components Au(+), dppe (dppe is bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane), and Br(-) in a 1:1:1 ratio can produce three different types of crystals: type A, orange luminescent solvates of the dimer Au(2)(dppe)(2)Br(2) (Au(2)(μ-dppe)(2)Br(2)·2(OSMe(2)), Au(2)(μ-dppe)(2)Br(2)·2(OCMe(2)), Au(2)(μ-dppe)(2)Br(2)·2(CH(2)Cl(2)), Au(2)(μ-dppe)(2)Br(2)·2(HC(O)NMe(2))); type B, green luminescent solvates of the same dimer (Au(2)(μ-dppe)(2)Br(2)·(NCMe) and Au(2)(μ-dppe)(2)Br(2)·0.5(C(4)H(10)O)); and type C, orange luminescent solvates of a polymer ({Au(μ-dppe)Br}(n)·0.5(C(4)H(10)O) and {Au(μ-dppe)Br}(n)·(CH(2)Cl(2))). Some crystals of types A are solvoluminescent. Exposure of type A crystals of Au(2)(μ-dppe)(2)Br(2)·2(OCMe(2)) or Au(2)(μ-dppe)(2)Br(2)·2(CH(2)Cl(2)) to air or vacuum results in the loss of the orange luminescence and the formation of new green luminescent crystals. Subsequent exposure of these crystals to acetone or dichloromethane vapor results in the reformation of crystals of type A. The dimeric complexes in crystals of types A and B are all centrosymmetric and share a common ring conformation. Within these dimers, the coordination geometry of each gold center is planar with a P(2)Br donor set. In other respects, the Au(2)(μ-dppe)(2)Br(2) molecule is remarkably flexible and behaves as a molecular accordion, whose dimensions depend upon the solvate content of a particular crystalline phase. In particular, the dimer Au(2)(μ-dppe)(2)Br(2) is able to accommodate Au···Au separations that range from 3.8479(3) to 3.0943(2) Å, and these variations along with alterations in the Au-Br distances and in the P-Au-P angles are the likely causes of the differences in the luminescence properties of these crystals.

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Pd(C(12)H(12)NO)(2)], consists of three crystallographically independent half-mol-ecules. Each Pd(II) atom lies on a center of inversion and is four-coordinated by two monoanionic forms of the amino-acryl-aldehyde in a square-planar geometry. In the crystal, adjacent mol-ecules are connected through C-H⋯π and C-H⋯O inter-actions into a three-dimensional polymeric structure.

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of Sc(2)(μ(2)-S)@C(s)(6)-C(82)·Ni(II)(OEP)·2C(6)H(6) and Sc(2)(μ(2)-S)@C(3v)(8)-C(82)·Ni(II)(OEP)·2C(6)H(6) reveal that both contain fully ordered fullerene cages. The crystallographic data for Sc(2)(μ(2)-S)@C(s)(6)-C(82)·Ni(II)(OEP)·2C(6)H(6) show two remarkable features: the presence of two slightly different cage sites and a fully ordered molecule Sc(2)(μ(2)-S)@C(s)(6)-C(82) in one of these sites. The Sc-S-Sc angles in Sc(2)(μ(2)-S)@C(s)(6)-C(82) (113.84(3)°) and Sc(2)(μ(2)-S)@C(3v)(8)-C(82) differ (97.34(13)°). This is the first case where the nature and structure of the fullerene cage isomer exerts a demonstrable effect on the geometry of the cluster contained within. Computational studies have shown that, among the nine isomers that follow the isolated pentagon rule for C(82), the cage stability changes markedly between 0 and 250 K, but the C(s)(6)-C(82) cage is preferred at temperatures ≥250 °C when using the energies obtained with the free encapsulated model (FEM). However, the C(3v)(8)-C(82) cage is preferred at temperatures ≥250 °C using the energies obtained by rigid rotor-harmonic oscillator (RRHO) approximation. These results corroborate the fact that both cages are observed and likely to trap the Sc(2)(μ(2)-S) cluster, whereas earlier FEM and RRHO calculations predicted only the C(s)(6)-C(82) cage is likely to trap the Sc(2)(μ(2)-O) cluster. Four isomers with the composition SmC(90) were obtained from carbon soot produced by electric arc vaporization of carbon rods doped with Sm(2)O(3). These were labeled Sm@C(90)(I), Sm@C(90)(II), Sm@C(90)(III), and Sm@C(90)(IV) in order of their elution times during chromatography on a Buckyprep column with toluene as the eluent. Analysis of the structures by single-crystal X-ray diffraction on cocrystals formed with Ni(octaethylporphyrin) reveals the identities of the individual isomers as follows: I, Sm@C(2)(40)-C(90); II, Sm@C(2)(42)-C(90); III, Sm@C(2v)(46)-C(90) and IV, Sm@C(2)(45)-C(90). This is the most extensive series of isomers of any endohedral fullerene to have their individual structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The cage structures of these four isomers can be related pairwise to one another in a formal sense through sequential Stone-Wales transformations.

Polyoxometalate ions are used as ligands in water-oxidation processes related to solar energy production. An important step in these reactions is the association and dissociation of water from the catalytic sites, the rates of which are unknown. Here we report the exchange rates of water ligated to Co(II) atoms in two polyoxotungstate sandwich molecules using the (17)O-NMR-based Swift-Connick method. The compounds were the [Co(4)(H(2)O)(2)(B-α-PW(9)O(34))(2)](10-) and the larger αββα-[Co(4)(H(2)O)(2)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)](16-) ions, each with two water molecules bound trans to one another in a Co(II) sandwich between the tungstate ligands. The clusters, in both solid and solution state, were characterized by a range of methods, including NMR, EPR, FT-IR, UV-Vis, and EXAFS spectroscopy, ESI-MS, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and potentiometry. For [Co(4)(H(2)O)(2)(B-α-PW(9)O(34))(2)](10-) at pH 5.4, we estimate: k(298)=1.5(5)±0.3×10(6) s(-1), ΔH(≠)=39.8±0.4 kJ mol(-1), ΔS(≠)=+7.1±1.2 J mol(-1) K(-1) and ΔV(≠)=5.6 ±1.6 cm(3) mol(-1). For the Wells-Dawson sandwich cluster (αββα-[Co(4)(H(2)O)(2)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)](16-)) at pH 5.54, we find: k(298)=1.6(2)±0.3×10(6) s(-1), ΔH(≠)=27.6±0.4 kJ mol(-1) ΔS(≠)=-33±1.3 J mol(-1) K(-1) and ΔV(≠)=2.2±1.4 cm(3) mol(-1) at pH 5.2. The molecules are clearly stable and monospecific in slightly acidic solutions, but dissociate in strongly acidic solutions. This dissociation is detectable by EPR spectroscopy as S=3/2 Co(II) species (such as the [Co(H(2)O)(6)](2+) monomer ion) and by the significant reduction of the Co-Co vector in the XAS spectra., (Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Two related proton-transfer compounds, namely piperazine-1,4-diium 4-oxo-4H-pyran-2,6-dicarboxylate monohydrate, C(4)H(12)N(2)(2+)·C(7)H(2)O(6)(2-)·H(2)O or (pipzH(2))(cdo)·H(2)O, (I), and piperazine-1,4-diium bis(6-carboxy-4-oxo-4H-pyran-2-carboxylate), C(4)H(12)N(2)(2+)·2C(7)H(3)O(6)(-) or (pipzH(2))(cdoH)(2), (II), were obtained by the reaction of 4-oxo-4H-pyran-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (chelidonic acid, cdoH(2)) and piperazine (pipz). In (I), both carboxyl H atoms of chelidonic acid have been transferred to piperazine to form the piperazine-1,4-diium ion. The structure is a monohydrate. All potential N-H donors are involved in N-H···O hydrogen bonds. The water molecule spans two anions via the 4-oxo group of the pyranose ring and a carboxylate O atom. The hydrogen-bonding motif is essentially two-dimensional. The structure is a pseudomerohedral twin. In the asymmetric unit of (II), the anion consists of monodeprotonated chelidonic acid, while the piperazine-1,4-diium cation is located on an inversion centre. The single carboxyl H atom is disordered in two respects. Firstly, the disordered H atom is shared equally by both carboxylic acid groups. Secondly, the H atom is statistically disordered between two positions on either side of a centre of symmetry and is engaged in a very short hydrogen-bonding interaction; the relevant O···O distances are 2.4549 (11) and 2.4395 (11) Å, and the O-H···O angles are 177 (6) and 177 (5)°, respectively. Further hydrogen bonding of the type N-H···O places the (pipzH(2))(2+) cations in pockets formed by the chains of (cdoH)(-) anions. In contrast with (I), the (pipzH(2))(2+) cations form hydrogen-bonding arrays that are perpendicular to the anions, yielding a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding motif. The structures of both (I) and (II) also feature π-π stacking interactions between aromatic rings.

Fullerenes are generally considered as highly symmetric, yet fullerene isomers with only C(1) symmetry, such as C(1)(30)-C(90) and C(1)(32)-C(90) whose structures are reported here, become increasingly numerous as fullerene size increases.

The [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of Sc(3)N@I(h)-C(80) with benzyne was successfully conducted for the first time. The reaction affords both the [5,6]- and [6,6]-monoadducts with a four-membered ring attached to the cage surface on 5,6- and 6,6-ring fusions, respectively. The compounds were characterized by MALDI-TOF, NMR, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structure determination. The electrochemical behavior of both monoadducts was investigated. The [5,6]-regioisomer displays reversible cathodic behavior similar to that observed for the fulleropyrrolidines with a 5,6-addition pattern. Surprisingly, the [6,6]-regioisomer also exhibits reversible cathodic behavior. The interconversion reaction of the isomers was also explored, and the results showed that both monoadducts are thermally very stable.

The title compound, (C(4)H(12)N(2))[Ce(2)(C(4)H(4)O(4)S)(4)(H(2)O)(2)]·3H(2)O, features a polymeric anion with a centrosymmetric Ce(2)O(2) core and a Ce⋯Ce distance of 4.3625 (4) Å. The anions form ribbons {[Ce(2)(C(4)H(4)O(4)S)(4)(H(2)O)(2)](2-)}(n) extending along [100]. The doubly protonated piperazinium cations reside on centers of inversion and link the polymeric ribbons via N-H⋯O hydrogen bonding. Each Ce(III) cation is ten-coordinated by an O(2)S donor set from two tridentate sulfanediyldiacetate (tda) ligands, one water mol-ecule and three other tda O donors from adjacent {Ce(tda)(2)(H(2)O)} units in a distorted bicapped cubic environment. Additional O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding involving the coordinated and solvent water mol-ecules is also present. H atoms of the crystal water molecules could not be located and were not included in the refinement.
