Charcoal is one of the most essential energy sources in the world and is used mainly for domestic and industrial purposes. Brazilian charcoal production occurs in rudimentary masonry kilns without concern for process safety or energy waste. This work aimed to develop a mini carbonization system of three kilns coupled to a vertical smoke burner for optimized and environmentally correct charcoal and wood vinegar (WV) production on small farms. The project was divided into three parts for dimensioning: the three-kiln set, the WV condensing device, and the smoke burner. The condenser was designed following the procedures from the standards of TEMA (Tubular Exchangers Manufacturers Association); ASME (Society of Mechanical Engineers of the United States) Section VIII, Division 1; and the NR-13 (Regulatory Standard) of ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards). In contrast to the current scenario, in which primitive carbonization technologies are still employed, bringing about low charcoal yields and significant pollution release, the use of a mini-kiln that allows charcoal production and wood vinegar recovery combined with pollutant smoke burning is an interesting eco-friendly solution. Thus, the mini-kiln model presented here brings a low cost and environmental safety to the charcoal production chain, reaching sustainability parameters and offering higher income opportunities to small producers.

The present work aimed to evaluate the wood of fourteen genetic materials (nine species, between native and exotic, and five clones of Eucalyptus) cultivated under two post-planting irrigation regimes in the Brazilian semiarid region. For each genotype, six trees (11 years old) were selected and subjected to two initial irrigation regimes (up to 12 months and up to 36 months) after planting. Discs of different stem heights were taken: 0% (base), breast height (DBH), 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. Samples were extracted along the radial axis of each disk at three regions (the pith-adjacent region, intermediate region, and bark-adjacent region). Samples were subsequently saturated in water to determine their density via the water displacement method. The irrigation systems caused changes in the pattern of radial and longitudinal variation in the clones regarding the proportion of woody material in the stem. Among the native species, Angico stood out with a high density and little juvenile wood, and Pau d’arco, with a low density and a high rate of juvenile wood. Among the exotic species, Nim presented a high density and a low rate of juvenile wood, and Chichá presented a high rate of juvenile wood and a low density. In the Eucalyptus hybrids, VE38 stood out with a high density. Overall, there was an influence from irrigation management, observed with greater intensity in exotic species for Mahogany and Acacia and for the VE41 and AEC1528 clones of Eucalyptus. The values of basic densities in the trees varied from 0.35 to 0.85 g·cm−3. There was good adaptation of native and exotic species and clones to the planting area in the Semiarid region.

Our working hypothesis was that magnesium (Mg) supplementation modulates plant performance under low water availability and improves drought tolerance in soybean genotypes. Plants of Bônus 8579, M8808 and TMG1180 genotypes were grown under field conditions and subjected to three water stress treatments (control, moderate and severe stress) and three Mg levels [0.9 (low), 1.3 (adequate) and 1.7 cmolc dm-³ (supplementation)]. After 28 days of drought imposition, the growth parameters, osmotic potential, relative water content, leaf succulence, Mg content and photosynthetic pigments were assessed. In general, drought drastically decreased the growth in all genotypes, and the reductions were intensified from moderate to severe stress. Under adequate Mg supply, TMG1180 was the most drought-tolerant genotype among the soybean plants, but Mg supplementation did not improve its tolerance. Conversely, although the M8808 genotype displayed inexpressive responses to drought under adequate Mg, the Mg-supplemented plants were found to have surprisingly better growth performance under stress compared to Bônus 8579 and TMG1180, irrespective of drought regime. The improved growth of high Mg-treated M8808-stressed plants correlated with low osmotic potential and increased relative water content, as well as shoot Mg accumulation, resulting in increased photosynthetic pigments and culminating in the highest drought tolerance. The results clearly indicate that Mg supplementation is a potential tool for alleviating water stress in M8808 soybean plants. Our findings suggest that the enhanced Mg-induced plant acclimation resulted from increased water content in plant tissues and strategic regulation of Mg content and photosynthetic pigments.

A confusão sexual é uma técnica inovadora de proteção biotécnica contra a traça-da-uva, Lobesia botrana, considerada praga-chave da vinha na Região Demarcada do Douro (RDD). O difusor ISONET-LTT®, desenvolvido pela Shin-Etsu Chemical Co, mostrou, em trabalhos recentes, ser eficaz na proteção da vinha contra L. botrana. Porém, a utilização repetida de difusores feitos à base de polietileno, gera um problema de natureza ambiental, pela acumulação de plástico na vinha. Recentemente, a mesma empresa desenvolveu um novo difusor feito com materiais biodegradáveis, o ISONET-LTT BIO®, semelhante aos tradicionais. No presente estudo, que decorreu durante 2020, pretendeu-se avaliar a eficácia destes dois modelos de difusores de feromona na proteção da vinha contra a traça-da-uva na RDD. Adicionalmente, foi também avaliado o efeito da altitude na evolução da quantidade de feromona libertada por cada modelo. De forma geral, os dois difusores permitiram uma redução da intensidade de ataque de L. botrana, nas três gerações, com exceção de algumas parcelas durante o terceiro voo e terceira geração. A evolução da quantidade de feromona libertada pelos difusores estudados prolongou-se até ao início de agosto. A avaliação da quantidade de feromona emitida, em miligramas por dia por hectare, permitiu identificar diferenças de perdas a cotas diferentes, com maior libertação nas cotas mais baixas. A aplicação do difusor biodegradável foi eficaz na proteção contra a traça-da-uva, podendo constituir uma alternativa viável para a redução de resíduos de plástico no ecossistema vitícola.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an arbovirus with maternal, sexual, and TORCH-related transmission capabilities. After 2015, Brazil had the highest number of ZIVK-infected pregnant women who lost their babies or delivered them with Congenital ZIKV Syndrome (CZS). ZIKV triggers an immune defense in the placenta. This immune response counts with the participation of interleukins and transcription factors. Additionally, it has the potential involvement of human endogenous retroviruses (HERVS). Interleukins are immune response regulators that aid immune tolerance and support syncytial structure development in the placenta, where syncytin receptors facilitate vital cell-to-cell fusion events. HERVs are remnants of ancient viral infections that integrate into the genome and produce syncytin proteins crucial for placental development. Since ZIKV can infect trophoblast cells, we analyzed the relationship between ZIKV infection, HERV, interleukin, and transcription factor modulations in the placenta. To investigate the impact of ZIKV on trophoblast cells, we examined two cell types (BeWo and HTR8) infected with ZIKV-MR766 (African) and ZIKV-IEC-Paraíba (Asian–Brazilian) using Taqman and RT2 Profiler PCR Array assays. Our results indicate that early ZIKV infection (24–72 h) does not induce differential interleukins, transcription factors, and HERV expression. However, we show that the expression of a few of these host defense genes appears to be linked independently of ZIKV infection. Future studies involving additional trophoblastic cell lineages and extended infection timelines will illuminate the dynamic interplay between ZIKV, HERVs, interleukins, and transcription factors in the placenta. Introduction: COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has been associated with oligosymptomatic cases or severe acute respiratory syndrome, with multiple organ failure and death. One of the most significant events for clinical outcomes is Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). It is known that AKI in COVID-19 is multifactorial, and the main mechanisms are cytokine storm, metabolic stress, use of nephrotoxic drugs, rhabdomyolysis, viral tropism to kidney tissues, and multiple organ failure. However, little is known about the impact of AKI clinical presentation and pathophysiological mechanisms on the outcome of patients affected by COVID-19. Objectives: To identify AKI clinical presentation and etiology, also known as phenotypes, and pathophysiological mechanisms, also known as subphenotypes, in patients affected by COVID-19 and associate them with death. This cohort and retrospective study evaluate the medical records of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted to a tertiary public hospital from 1 June 2020, to 31 July 2021, from admission to clinical outcome (hospital discharge or death). Clinical and laboratory data were analyzed during the hospitalization. Renal function was estimated by urine output and serum creatinine; therefore, the diagnosis and AKI classification were based on the 2012 KDIGO criteria. The occurrence of AKI was the inclusion criterion. According to clinical and laboratory presentations, we recognized two phenotypes of AKI (the direct and indirect impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the kidney) and several pathophysiological mechanisms. Subphenotypes of the direct impact of SARS-CoV-2 on kidneys were associated with Kidney Viral Tropism, Cytokine Storm, COVID-19-Related Multiple Organ Failure, and Mixed (more than one mechanism associated with COVID-19). Subphenotypes of indirect impact of SARS-CoV-2 on kidney phenotypes were Ischemic, Nephrotoxic due to rhabdomyolysis, and Septic. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify risk factors associated with death. Result: In total, 372 patients were included; 55.6% were male, 82.3% were Caucasians, and the mean age was 61.4 years. The majority of patients were admitted to the ICU (88.2%) and required mechanical ventilation (86.3%). AKI was predominantly KDIGO 3 (65.6%). When classifying our patients' AKI in two kidney phenotypes based on their clinical presentation, the direct impact of the SARS-CoV-2 phenotype was predominant (71,5%) and associated with higher mortality (83.8 vs. 46.3%, p = 0.001). Among the AKI pathophysiological mechanisms, Mixed—synergism of viral mechanisms—was the most prevalent (23.4%), followed by Viral Tropism (19.9%), Multiple Organ Failure—MOF (18%), Septic (15.6%), Ischemic (12.9%), and Cytokine Storm (10.2%). Mortality was high (73.1%). Logistic regression identified APACHE II, ATN-ISS, and the direct impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the kidney as factors associated with death, while ischemic AKI was associated with lower mortality. Conclusions: We can conclude that APACHE II and ATN-ISS scoring are clinical predictions of hospital mortality in COVID patients with AKI, as well as AKI etiology involving the direct impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the kidney, while ischemic pathophysiological mechanisms of AKI are associated with lower mortality. Breast cancer (BC) stands out as the most commonly type of cancer diagnosed in women worldwide, and chemotherapy, a key component of treatment, exacerbates cancer-induced skeletal muscle wasting, contributing to adverse health outcomes. Notably, the impact of chemotherapy on skeletal muscle seems to surpass that of the cancer itself, with inflammation identified as a common trigger for muscle wasting in both contexts. In skeletal muscle, pro-inflammatory cytokines modulate pathways crucial for the delicate balance between protein synthesis and breakdown, as well as satellite cell activation and myonuclear accretion. Physical exercise consistently emerges as a crucial therapeutic strategy to counteract cancer and chemotherapy-induced muscle wasting, ultimately enhancing patients' quality of life. However, a "one size fits all" approach does not apply to the prescription of exercise for BC patients, with factors such as age, menopause and comorbidities influencing the response to exercise. Hence, tailored exercise regimens, considering factors such as duration, frequency, intensity, and type, are essential to maximize efficacy in mitigating muscle wasting and improving disease outcomes. Despite the well-established anti-inflammatory role of aerobic exercise, resistance exercise proves equally or more beneficial in terms of mass and strength gain, as well as enhancing quality of life. This review comprehensively explores the molecular pathways affected by distinct exercise regimens in the skeletal muscle of cancer patients during chemotherapy, providing critical insights for precise exercise implementation to prevent skeletal muscle wasting. The nanomaterial field is experiencing exponential growth due to exceptional properties of nano-objects. Among them, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are of particular interest due to their outstanding magnetic properties which can be applied in the biomedical area. Therefore, their complete characterization is crucial. This work presents the development of a methodology using the single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP ICP-MS) technique to characterize IONPs. For this purpose, a study of instrumental parameters has been carried out to obtain the best signal to background ratio for the iron element. This best ratio was reached with high energy helium as collision gas and a forward power of 1200 W. An improvement in the mathematical treatment to precisely find the threshold between background and IONP signals has also been achieved. This optimization of instrumental conditions and mathematical treatment was first set up on a commercial 30 nm IONP suspension showing a limit of detection in size of 24.1 ± 5.0 nm with a dwell time of 3 ms and 11.5 ± 0.4 nm with a lower one of 0.1 ms. The optimized methodology was then applied to the characterization of other IONP suspensions: a size-polydisperse (50 to 100 nm) and a monodisperse (centred at 20 nm) commercial suspension, as well as a laboratory-synthesized one (with an average size of 10 nm). The size results using our optimized methodology were found to be in good correlation with the expected size of all the analysed IONP suspensions. This demonstrates that nanometer-sized IONP suspensions can be characterized with reliability by the SP ICP-MS technique by following the methodology optimized herein. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rapid development of 5G networks and the anticipation of 6G technologies have ushered in an era of highly customizable network environments facilitated by the innovative concept of network slicing. This technology allows the creation of multiple virtual networks on the same physical infrastructure, each optimized for specific service requirements. Despite its numerous benefits, network slicing introduces significant security vulnerabilities that must be addressed to prevent exploitation by increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. This review explores the application of cutting-edge technologies—Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically Machine Learning (ML), Software-Defined Networking (SDN), and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV)—in crafting advanced security solutions tailored for network slicing. AI's predictive threat detection and automated response capabilities are analysed, highlighting its role in maintaining service integrity and resilience. Meanwhile, SDN and NFV are scrutinized for their ability to enforce flexible security policies and manage network functionalities dynamically, thereby enhancing the adaptability of security measures to meet evolving network demands. Thoroughly examining the current literature and industry practices, this paper identifies critical research gaps in security frameworks and proposes innovative solutions. We advocate for a holistic security strategy integrating ML, SDN, and NFV to enhance data confidentiality, integrity, and availability across network slices. The paper concludes with future research directions to develop robust, scalable, and efficient security frameworks capable of supporting the safe deployment of network slicing in next-generation networks. Identifying cultivars of leguminous crops exhibiting drought resistance has become crucial in addressing water scarcity issues. This investigative study aimed to select soybean and cowpea cultivars with enhanced potential to grow under water restriction during the vegetative stage. Two parallel trials were conducted using seven soybean (AS3810IPRO, M8644IPRO, TMG1180RR, NS 8338IPRO, BMX81I81IPRO, M8808IPRO, and BÔNUS8579IPRO) and cowpea cultivars (Aracê, Novaera, Pajeú, Pitiúba, Tumucumaque, TVU, and Xique-xique) under four water levels (75, 60, 45, and 30% field capacity—FC) over 21 days. Growth, water content, membrane damage, photosynthetic pigments, organic compounds, and proline levels were analyzed. Drought stress significantly impacted the growth of both crops, particularly at 45 and 30% FC for soybean and 60 and 45% FC for cowpea plants. The BÔNUS8579IPRO and TMG1180RR soybean cultivars demonstrated the highest performance under drought, a response attributed to increased amino acids and proline contents, which likely help to mitigate membrane damage. For cowpea, the superior performance of the drought-stressed Xique-xique cultivar was associated with the maintenance of water content and elevated photosynthetic pigments, which contributed to the preservation of the photosynthetic efficiency and carbohydrate levels. Our findings clearly indicate promising leguminous cultivars that grow under water restriction, serving as viable alternatives for cultivating in water-limited environments.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of extrinsic factors (meat type, price, and nutritional claims) on purchase intention and the perception of intrinsic factors (tenderness, juiciness and flavor) in buffalo loin in a region of Brazil where the marketing of buffalo meat is not common. Photos of the steaks were treated and labels were designed to simulate the retail purchase process, with the effects of extrinsic factors being evaluated through conjoint analysis. Sensory tests of difference from control, purchase intention, and overall acceptance were performed for intrinsic factors. Regarding the purchase process, a determining factor was the price, with buffalo meat having a better purchase intention when associated with a lower price. The lowest price also proved to be more important than the presence of nutritional information for most respondents, however, nutritional information was necessary for consumers characterized over 50 years old. Good acceptance was perceived after tasting buffalo meat, even with less tenderness and juiciness compared to Nellore, and only a minority respondents were willing to pay more for it. The buffalo meat presents a potential option for the consumer, when offered in association with marketing strategies that emphasize nutritional and/or sensory information, such as tenderness and juiciness.

Summary: Mouse models enable the study of genetic factors affecting the complex pathophysiology of metabolic disorders. Here, we identify reductions in leptin levels, food intake, and obesity due to high-fat diet, accompanied by increased leptin sensitivity, in mice that harbor the E2a-Cre transgene within Obrq2, an obesity quantitative trait locus (QTL) that includes the leptin gene. Interestingly, loss of allograft inflammatory factor-1-like (AIF1L) protein in these transgenic mice leads to similar leptin sensitivity, yet marked reversal of the obesity phenotype, with accelerated weight gain and increased food intake. Transgenic mice lacking AIF1L also have low circulating leptin, which suggests that benefits of enhanced leptin sensitivity are lost with further impairment of leptin expression due to loss of AIF1L. Together, our results identify AIF1L as a genetic modifier of Obrq2 and leptin that affects leptin levels, food intake, and obesity during the metabolic stress imposed by HFD.

Inhibited attachment disordered behavior (IADB) is characterized by difficulty in establishing an attachment relationship with a primary caregiver; is associated with persistent social and emotional problems; and is observed most frequently in contexts of pathological care such as institutional rearing. Here, we seek to enhance understanding of the conditions that give rise to IADB among institutionalized children by examining prior family experiences of neglect and deprivation and concurrent relational experiences at the institution. The sample is comprised of 146 children, between 36 and 78 months. IADB was assessed using a semi-structured interview administered to the child's primary caregiver. Results revealed that both pre-institutionalization experiences (e.g. parental abandonment) and current relational ones (e.g. low quality of child-caregiver relationship) predicted IADB. Findings are discussed in light of the need to promote conditions which foster the establishment and maintenance of the child's selective attachment to a caregiving figure.
