Abstract

For the operation of the WASA (Wide Angle Shower Apparatus) detector system at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY in Forschungszentrum Julich (FZJ) a new DAQ system has been developed, which conforms to the third generation of the DAQ systems at COSY. This comprises new readout electronics based on an optimized parallel bus with LVDS technology and FPGA-controlled event and buffer management. The new DAQ system has been successfully commissioned in autumn 2006. Further developments aiming at performance optimizations are in progress. The implementation status is presented and performance issues are discussed.

Abstract

Differential cross sections have been extracted from exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of quasifree polarized n⃗p scattering performed in the energy region of the d*(2380) dibaryon resonance covering the range of beam energies Tn=0.98−1.29 GeV (s=2.32−2.44 GeV). The experiment was carried out with the WASA-at-COSY setup having a polarized deuteron beam impinged on the hydrogen pellet target and utilizing the quasifree process dp→np+pspectator. In this way the np differential cross section σ(Θ) was measured over a large angular range. The obtained angular distributions complement the corresponding analyzing power Ay(Θ) measurements published previously. A SAID partial-wave analysis incorporating the new data strengthens the finding of a resonance pole in the coupled D33−G33 waves.

Abstract

We report on the experimental search for the bound state of an η meson and He3 nucleus performed using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup. In order to search for the η-mesic nucleus decay, the pd→3He2γ and pd→3He6γ channels have been analysed. These reactions manifest the direct decay of the η meson bound in a He3 nucleus. This non-mesonic decay channel has been considered for the first time. When taking into account only statistical errors, the obtained excitation functions reveal a slight indication for a possible bound state signal corresponding to a $^{3}$He-η nucleus width Γ above 20 MeV and binding energy Bs between 0 and 15 MeV. However, the determined cross sections are consistent with zero in the range of the systematic uncertainty. Therefore, as final result we estimate only the upper limit for the cross section of the η-mesic He3 nucleus formation followed by the η meson decay which varies between 2 nb and 15 nb depending on possible bound state parameters.

Abstract

We report on the experimental search for the bound state of an eta meson and He-3 nucleus performed using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup. In order to search for the eta-mesic nucleus decay, the pd -> (3)He2(gamma) and pd -> (3)He6 gamma channels have been analysed. These reactions manifest the direct decay of the ti meson bound in a He-3 nucleus. This non-mesonic decay channel has been considered for the first time. When taking into account only statistical errors, the obtained excitation functions reveal a slight indication for a possible bound state signal corresponding to a He-3-eta nucleus width Gamma above 20 MeV and binding energy B-s between 0 and 15 MeV. However, the determined cross sections are consistent with zero in the range of the systematic uncertainty. Therefore, as final result we estimate only the upper limit for the cross section of the eta-mesic He-3 nucleus formation followed by the eta meson decay which varies between 2 nb and 15 nb depending on possible bound state parameters.

Abstract

Abstract

The measurement in the vicinity of η meson production was performed using a ramped proton beam. The data analysis and interpretation was carried out with the assumption that the η mesic helium decays via the formation of an intermediate N∗(1535) resonance. No direct signal of the η mesic nucleus is observed in the excitation function. We determine a new improved upper limit for the total cross section for the bound state production and decay in the pd→(3He-η)bound→dpπ0 process. It varies between 13 nb to 24 nb for the bound state with width in the range Γ∈(5,50) MeV.

Abstract

Resistance to stagonospora nodorum blotch (SNB) in glumes of hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), caused by Phaeosphaeria (Stagonospora anamorph) nodorum was investigated in a recombinant-inbred (RI) population. The Purdue University winter wheat breeding lines P91193D1 and P92201D5, unrelated by parentage but both exhibiting partial SNB resistance, were crossed to develop 254 RI lines by single-seed descent (SSD) from a random population of [F.sub.2] plants, to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling SNB resistance in wheat glumes. The RI population, together with parent lines, was phenotyped for glume resistance to SNB under field conditions in [F.sub.8:10] at Evansville, Vincennes, and Lafayette, IN, in 2003; in [F.sub.7:9] at South Perth, Australia, in 2004; and in [F.sub.8:10] in greenhouse-grown inoculated tests at Lafayette in 2003 and 2004. Two QTLs for resistance to SNB in glumes were identified: QSng.pur-2DL.1 from P91193D1 and QSng.pur-2DL.2 from P92201D5. The QTL QSng. pur-2DL.1 explained from 12.3% of the phenotypic variation for resistance in southern Indiana (Evansville and Vincennes) to 38.1% at South Perth; QSng.pur-2DL.2 accounted for 6.9 and 11.2% of the phenotypic variation in Indiana and South Perth, respectively. This study is the first report of SNB glume blotch resistance in which the same QTLs were identified in tests on different continents where Stagonospora nodorum populations are probably genetically diverse.

Abstract

Differential cross sections have been extracted from exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of quasifree polarized (n) over barp scattering performed in the energy region of the d* (2380) dibaryon resonance covering the range of beam energies T-n = 0.98-1.29 GeV (root s = 2.32-2.44 GeV). The experiment was carried out with the WASA-at-COSY setup having a polarized deuteron beam impinged on the hydrogen pellet target and utilizing the quasifree process dp -> np + p(spectator). In this way the np differential cross section sigma (Theta) was measured over a large angular range. The obtained angular distributions complement the corresponding analyzing power A(y)(Theta) measurements published previously. A SAID partial-wave analysis incorporating the new data strengthens the finding of a resonance pole in the coupled D-3(3) - (3)G(3) waves.

Abstract

This letter reports a first quantitative analysis of the contribution of higher partial waves in the charge symmetry breaking reaction dd→4Heπ0 using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup at an excess energy of Q=60MeV. The determined differential cross section can be parametrized as dσ/dΩ=a+bcos2⁡θ⁎, where θ⁎ is the production angle of the pion in the center-of-mass coordinate system, and the results for the parameters are a=(1.55±0.46(stat)+0.32−0.8(syst))pb/sr and b=(13.1±2.1(stat)−2.7+1.0(syst))pb/sr. The data are compatible with vanishing p-waves and a sizable d-wave contribution. This finding should strongly constrain the contribution of the Δ isobar to the dd→4Heπ0 reaction and is, therefore, crucial for a quantitative understanding of quark mass effects in nuclear production reactions. Abstract

Wide angle shower apparatus (WASA), a detector for charged and neutral particles is currently operated at the CELSIUS storage ring by TSL, Uppsala University. It shall be transferred to the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) at Forschungszentrum Julich (FZJ) after the anticipated shutdown of CELSIUS in summer 2005. For operation in Julich a new DAQ system is being developed, which conforms to the third generation of the DAQ systems at COSY. This comprises new readout electronics based on an optimized parallel bus with LVDS technology and FPGA-controlled event and buffer management, a synchronization system and a high speed optical link to the readout computer. Architecture of the new DAQ system and the technical issues of subsystems are presented. Index Terms--Data acquisition, FPGA, optical communication, triggering.

Abstract

The PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) experiment will be one ofthe four flagship experiments at the new international accelerator complex FAIR(Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. PANDA willaddress fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamicsusing high-intensity cooled antiproton beams with momenta between 1.5 and15 GeV/c and a design luminosity of up to 2× 10^32 cm−2 s−1. Excellent particleidentification (PID) is crucial to the success of the PANDA physics program.Hadronic PID in the barrel region of the target spectrometer will be performed by afast and compact Cherenkov counter using the detection of internally reflectedCherenkov light (DIRC) technology. It is designed to cover the polar angle rangefrom 22° to 140° and will provide at least 3 standard deviations (s.d.) π/Kseparation up to 3.5GeV/c, matching the expected upper limit of the final statekaon momentum distribution from simulation. This documents describes thetechnical design and the expected performance of the PANDA Barrel DIRCdetector. The design is based on the successful BaBar DIRC with several keyimprovements. The performance and system cost were optimized in detaileddetector simulations and validated with full system prototypes using particle beamsat GSI and CERN. The final design meets or exceeds the PID goal of clean π/Kseparation with at least 3 s.d. over the entire phase space of charged kaons in theBarrel DIRC.

Abstract

The quasifree pp→ppπ+π− reaction has been measured by means of pd collisions at Tp=1.2GeV using the WASA detector setup at COSY enabling exclusive and kinematically complete measurements. Total and differential cross sections have been extracted for the energy region Tp=1.08–1.36 GeV (√s=2.35–2.46GeV) covering thus the regions of N∗(1440) and Δ(1232)Δ(1232) resonance excitations. Calculations describing these excitations by t-channel meson exchange as well as isospin relations based on the pp→ppπ0π0 data underpredict substantially the measured total cross section. The calculations are also at variance with specific experimental differential cross sections. An isotensor ΔN dibaryon resonance with I(JP)=2(1+) produced associatedly with a pion is able to overcome these deficiencies. Such a dibaryon was predicted by Dyson and Xuong [Phys. Rev. Lett. 13, 815 (1964)] and more recently calculated by A. Gal and H. Garcilazo [Nucl. Phys. A 928, 73 (2014)].

Abstract

The PANDA spectrometer will be built at the FAIR facility at Darmstadt (Germany) to perform accurate tests of the strong interaction through ¯pp and ¯pA annihilation studies. The charged particle tracking at PANDA will be done using both solid state and gaseous detectors. Among the latter, two straw tube detector systems will be built [1]. The cylindrical, central straw tube tracker features a high spatial and momentum resolution for a wide range of particle momenta from about 8 GeV/c down to a few 100 MeV/c, together with particle identification in the momentum region below about 1 GeV/c by measuring the specific energy-loss. A new technique, based on self-supporting straw double layers with intrinsic wire tension developed for the COSY-TOF straw tracker [2], has been adopted for the PANDA trackers. The development of the readout electronics for the straw tubes is ongoing. Prototypes have been produced and used to instrument straw tube modules that have been tested with cosmic rays and proton beams. Design issues of the PANDA straw tubes, together with the results of the prototype tests are presented.
