We report on a grounded theory study of late-arriving immigrant youth (LIY) who arrived in the United States at 16-18 years of age and were referred to daytime General Education Diploma (D-GED) programs. These programs provide an alternate path to a high school diploma for youth with insufficient knowledge of English to complete graduation requirements before turning 19 years. Based on interviews with 38 youth from Latin America, we propose the core category of our grounded theory to be students Navigating Child and Adult Immigrant Narratives while making educational and career decisions. This process begins before immigration when youth imagine ambitious alternate selves--ideal educational and career selves in the United States, consistent with the American Dream and immigrant child narrative. The D-GED programs represent a compromise between a child and adult educational pathway. Students in these programs felt excluded from the regular high school but received social and emotional support while on a faster track to graduation and self-sufficiency as adults. However, students lacked concrete information and roadmaps for how to attain their ambitious goals. The study highlights the unique challenges faced by LIY as they develop ambitious and realistic education and career goals.

Objectives: To develop and validate a simple approach for building cost-effective imaging phantoms for Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) using a modified Polyjet additive manufacturing technology where a single material can mimic a range of human soft-tissue radiation attenuation. Materials and Methods: Single material test phantoms using a cubic lattice were designed in 3-Matic 15.0 software . Keeping the individual cubic lattice volume constant, eight different percentage ratio (R) of air: material from 0% to 70% with a 10% increment were assigned to each sample. The phantoms were printed in three materials, namely Vero PureWhite, VeroClear and TangoPlus using Polyjet technology. The CT value analysis, non-contact profile measurement and microCT-based volumetric analysis was performed for all the samples. Results: The printed test phantoms produced a grey value spectrum equivalent to the radiation attenuation of human soft tissues in the range of −757 to +286 HU on CT. The results from dimensional comparison analysis of the printed phantoms with the digital test phantoms using non-contact profile measurement showed a mean accuracy of 99.07 % and that of micro-CT volumetric analysis showed mean volumetric accuracy of 84.80–94.91%. The material and printing costs of developing 24 test phantoms was 83.00 Euro. Conclusions: The study shows that additive manufacturing-guided macrostructure manipulation modifies successfully the radiographic visibility of a material in CBCT imaging with 1 mm3 resolution, helping customization of imaging phantoms.

Background: The practice of newborns being put to the breasts soon after birth results in a reduction in neonatal mortality. Factors such as antenatal care attendance, delivery at the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) facility, mode of delivery, number of children, and various socio-cultural practices are found to have a positive impact on the early initiation of breastfeeding. The present study was performed to determine the socio-demographic, maternal, and neonatal factors affecting the early initiation of breastfeeding. Methodology: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was performed at the Immunization Clinic and Nursery situated in a government tertiary care hospital for assessing the pattern of breastfeeding initiation. Children born at the hospital and also those reporting to the clinic from outside were included in the study. Results: Breastfeeding initiation within 1 hour after delivery was only 30%, and 9% did not initiate breastfeeding at all. About half of the reasons for not initiating breastfeeding were related to mothers, followed by 30% related to babies. Conclusion: Upon regression analysis, it was found that urban residence, higher educational status of the mothers, and those mothers who were not counselled on breastfeeding during antenatal visits had higher odds of not initiating breastfeeding and that was statistically significant.

Abstract This editorial presents the vision for the newly formed (2022) European 3D Special Interest Group (EU3DSIG) in the landscape of medical 3D printing. There are four areas of work identified by the EU3DSIG in the current landscape, namely: 1) creating and fostering communication channels among researches, clinicians and industry, 2) generating awareness of hospitals point-of-care 3D technologies; 3) knowledge sharing and education; 4) regulation, registry and reimbursement models.

Abstract Background Diabetes mellitus is an obtrusive universal health emergency in developed and developing countries, including India. With the exponential rise of epidemiological conditions, the costs of treating and managing diabetes are on an upsurge. This study aimed to estimate the cost of diabetes and determine the determinants of the total cost among diabetic patients. Methods This cross-sectional study was executed in the northern state of Punjab, India. It involves the multi-stage area sampling technique and data was collected through a self-structured questionnaire adapted following the “WHO STEPS Surveillance” manual. Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests were performed to compare the cost differences in socio-demographic variables. Lastly, multiple linear regression was conducted to determine and evaluate the association of the dependent variable with numerous influential determinants. Results The urban respondents' average direct and indirect costs are higher than rural respondents. Age manifests very eccentric results; the highest mean direct outpatient care expenditure of ₹52,104 was incurred by the respondents below 20 years of age. Gender, complications, income, history of diabetes and work status were statistically significant determinants of the total cost. Study reports a rapid increase in the median annual direct and indirect cost from ₹15,460 and ₹3572 in 1999 to ₹34,100 and ₹4200 in 2021. Conclusions The present study highlights that the economic jeopardy of diabetes can be managed by educating people about diabetes and its associated risk factors. The economic burden of diabetes could be restrained by formulating new health policies and promoting the use of generic medicines. The result of the study directs that expenditure on outpatient care is to be reimbursed under the ‘Ayushman Bharat-Sarbat Sehat Bima Yojana’.

Introduction: Open nephrectomy poses a challenge for the anaesthesiologist due to its large subcostal incision and association with both somatic and visceral pain. While various methods exist for postoperative pain management, a single modality approach remains largely ineffective in adequate pain management. Epidural analgesia, intravenous Patient Controlled analgesia pumps, and ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks are commonly used. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound-guided Erector Spinae Plane Block (ESPB) as a part of multimodal analgesia for postoperative pain in patients undergoing open nephrectomy, to enhance recovery after surgery. Materials and Methods: This randomised controlled study was conducted at Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India, on 48 patients undergoing open nephrectomy. They were randomly assigned to two groups: Group I received ultrasound-guided ESPB, while Group II did not receive a block before anaesthesia reversal. In the Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU), all patients were kept on intravenous Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) morphine, and pain was assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) scoring. The time of first analgesic requirement and the total morphine consumption in the first 24 hours were recorded. Patient satisfaction and quality of sleep at night were evaluated using a Likert scale. Data analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0. Summary: Objective was to update a clinical practice guideline (CPG) for the management of fatigue in children and adolescents with cancer or pediatric hematopoietic cell transplant recipients. We reconvened a multi-disciplinary and multi-national panel. While the previous 2018 CPG evaluated adult and pediatric randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to manage fatigue, this 2023 update revised previous recommendations based only on pediatric RCTs. Twenty RCTs were included in the updated systematic review. Physical activity significantly reduced fatigue (standardized mean difference −0.44, 95% confidence interval −0.64 to −0.24; n = 8 RCTs). Using the 2018 recommendations as a basis, the panel continued to make strong recommendations to use physical activity, and to offer relaxation, mindfulness or both, to manage fatigue in pediatric patients. Cognitive or cognitive behavioral therapies may be offered. Pharmacological approaches should not be routinely used. The panel made a new good practice statement to routinely assess for fatigue, ideally using a validated scale.

BackgroundGray matter (GM) atrophy in brain is one of the best predictors of long-term disability in multiple sclerosis (MS), and recent findings have revealed that localized GM atrophy is associated with clinical disabilities. GM atrophy associated with each disability mapped to a distinct brain region, revealing a disability-specific atlas (DSA) of GM loss.ObjectiveTo uncover the mechanisms underlying the development of localized GM atrophy.MethodsWe used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to evaluate localized GM atrophy and Clear Lipid-exchanged Acrylamide-hybridized Rigid Imaging-compatible Tissue-hYdrogel (CLARITY) to evaluate specific pathologies in mice with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).ResultsWe observed extensive GM atrophy throughout the cerebral cortex, with additional foci in the thalamus and caudoputamen, in mice with EAE compared to normal controls. Next, we generated pathology-specific atlases (PSAs), voxelwise mappings of the correlation between specific pathologies and localized GM atrophy. Interestingly, axonal damage (end-bulbs and ovoids) in the spinal cord strongly correlated with GM atrophy in the sensorimotor cortex of the brain.ConclusionThe combination of VBM with CLARITY in EAE can localize GM atrophy in brain that is associated with a specific pathology in spinal cord, revealing a PSA of GM loss.

Darier disease is an autosomal dominant inherited skin disorder with complete penetrance and variable expressivity due to mutation in the ATP 2A2 gene. It usually develops from childhood and persists through adolescence. Late onset of this genodermatosis has been infrequently reported and found to have minimal findings compared to the classical cases. Classical disease presents with greasy keratotic yellowish-brown papules over the seborrheic areas with palmar pits and nail changes. We hereby report a case of late onset comedonal darier disease with extensive hypopigmented lesions, involvement of palms and nails which is rarely reported in this setting. A thorough review of literature was done and a compendium prepared of late onset darier and no other case report was found to have such extensive involvement as the case reported. It will be interesting to compare more such late onset cases to see if they have a common pattern which can suggest them to be a separate entity from the classical darier.

Introduction: Approximately 40 years have passed since we first learned about the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but several people living with HIV (PLHIV) in developing countries such as India cannot avail treatments. This makes preventive measures, such as vaccinations, critical in these persons to avoid vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs). However, little is known about the willingness and perceptions of PLHIV regarding these vaccines. Therefore, we explored vaccine awareness and hesitancy, especially during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Objectives: The primary objective was to determine the uptake of the Covid-19 vaccine and other VPD's among PLHIV and factors affecting the same in Antiretroviral therapy (ART) centers in a tertiary care hospital in North India. Research Design and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of HIV patients who attended our Antiretroviral Therapy center (ART). Clinical data were collected using a questionnaire on general profile, disease information, knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding vaccinations, and vaccination status for different VPDs. Results/Findings: We enrolled 300 subjects and found that 82% of the patients attending our ART center were aware of vaccinations, most of whom were aware of the polio vaccine (n=91, 30.33%), followed by tuberculosis (n=61, 20.33%), and the majority of them were not aware of vaccines indicated in PLHIV. We also found that the majority (n= 240, 80.23%) of patients had vaccine hesitancy, especially regarding the new COVID-19 vaccine. Conclusion: There is a need to create awareness among people about the benefits and uses of vaccination to achieve the greater goal of reduced morbidity and mortality among PLHIV. There is a need for free vaccination programs for VPDs in PLHIV patients.

Alopecia areata (AA) and trichotillomania (TTM) are the two common causes of localised non scarring alopecia. While AA is an autoimmune disorder, TTM is an impulse control disorder which makes the treatment of the two entities completely different. Trichoscopy is a non-invasive tool used to diagnose hair disorders, which not only is extremely helpful in diagnosing AA and TTM but also differentiates them from other hair disorders as well. The aim of our study is to describe the various trichoscopic features of AA and TTM and to compare the frequency of each trichoscopic feature in order to establish diagnostic clues for differentiating AA and TTM. Trichoscopy was performed on clinically diagnosed cases of AA and TTM with DL4 dermoscope and the images were analysed by 2 dermatologists independently. The frequency of trichoscopic features in AA and TTM was compared using chi square test. Twenty-four patients of TTM and 50 patients of AA were included in the study with mean age of AA being 30 years and mean age of TTM being 23.4 years. Exclamation mark hair, tapered hair, coudability hair, pigtail hair, clustered vellous hair, clustered regrowing hair and white hair were significantly more in alopecia areata. Conversely broken hair of different length, trichoptilosis, flame hair, mace hair, coiled hair, hair powder, fractured hair, v sign and burnt matchstick sign were the common features in TTM. To conclude, even though there is an overlap of trichoscopic features in AA and TTM, it is possible to distinguish the two if an assemblage of specific features are present.

Ischemic injury to white matter tracts is increasingly recognized to play a key role in age-related cognitive decline, vascular dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. Knowledge of the effects of ischemic axonal injury on cortical neurons is limited yet critical to identifying molecular pathways that link neurodegeneration and ischemia. Using a mouse model of subcortical white matter ischemic injury coupled with retrograde neuronal tracing, we employed magnetic affinity cell sorting with fluorescence-activated cell sorting to capture layer-specific cortical neurons and performed RNA-sequencing. With this approach, we identified a role for microtubule reorganization within stroke-injured neurons acting through the regulation of tau. We find that subcortical stroke-injured Layer 5 cortical neurons up-regulate the microtubule affinity-regulating kinase, Mark4, in response to axonal injury. Stroke-induced up-regulation of Mark4 is associated with selective remodeling of the apical dendrite after stroke and the phosphorylation of tau in vivo. In a cell-based tau biosensor assay, Mark4 promotes the aggregation of human tau in vitro. Increased expression of Mark4 after ischemic axonal injury in deep layer cortical neurons provides new evidence for synergism between axonal and neurodegenerative pathologies by priming of tau phosphorylation and aggregation.

Background: The one thought that has taken precedence over the conscious cognition of the cerebral cortex of Indian medical educators is how to implement the Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) program. A revolution that has occurred after 21 odd years, indeed should captivate the change leaders of health professions education. COVID -19 pandemic has posed on medical educators, who enthusiastically implemented the CBME curriculum from 2019 in India, an uphill struggle to understand, apply and eradicate the challenges in effectively implementing the newer elements of the CBME curriculum. A number of newer elements namely Foundation course, Early Clinical Exposure, Electives, Integration, and Learner Doctor Method of clinical clerkship, have been introduced into the new undergraduate medical curriculum. Health professions educators in India, being beginners in implementing these newer elements of the revolutionary 2019 CBME curriculum, it is pertinent to answer the queries that tickle the minds on how to implement and address the anticipated challenges and where to look for solutions. Aims: The authors aim to address some of these queries by giving ready to use templates, guided stepwise breakup of implementation, experience based solutions to the challenges, for various newer elements. They elaborate upon the opportunities of a positive change that medical education in India so direly needs. Conclusion: The stumbling blocks in implementing such a dynamic and thoroughgoing program needs the due contemplation to navigate successfully as directed by the National Medical Commission or erstwhile Medical Council of India. A majority of Indian schoolchildren are biliterate in that they acquire literacy in at least two language systems, necessitating dyslexia assessment in both. The DALI-DAB assesses risk for dyslexia by evaluating reading ability and literacy-learning potential through a battery including literacy tests (letter and word reading, spelling, nonword reading, reading comprehension), and mediator skills (phonological awareness, processing automaticity and executive fluency, oral language) in multiple languages. DALI-DAB was developed in three languages -- English, Hindi, and Marathi -- and standardized on a sample of 1013 children. Reliability analyses revealed high internal consistency ([alpha] > 0.8) in most tests in all three languages. Low standard error of measurement values supported DALI-DAB score stability over repeated testing. Construct validity was variously reinforced through, (i) selection of culture-referenced, research-based tests, (ii) approval of test materials by schoolteachers (face validity) and (iii) grade-correlated performance increases on all DALI-DAB tests, besides robust correlations between (iv) literacy and mediator skill test scores (p < 0.001, concurrent validity), (v) equivalent tests across languages (p < 0.01, convergent validity), and (vi) DALI-DAB and WJ III ACH literacy scores (p < 0.01, criterion validity), in contrast to (vii) low correlation between DALI-DAB and WJ III ACH math scores (p > 0.05, discriminant validity). Overall, the DALI-DAB represents the first standardized dyslexia assessment tool for bilingual-biliterate children.

Current medical imaging phantoms are usually limited by simplified geometry and radiographic skeletal homogeneity, which confines their usage for image quality assessment. In order to fabricate realistic imaging phantoms, replication of the entire tissue morphology and the associated CT numbers, defined as Hounsfield Unit (HU) is required. 3D printing is a promising technology for the production of medical imaging phantoms with accurate anatomical replication. So far, the majority of the imaging phantoms using 3D printing technologies tried to mimic the average HU of soft tissue human organs. One important aspect of the anthropomorphic imaging phantoms is also the replication of realistic radiodensities for bone tissues. In this study, we used filament printing technology to develop a CT-derived 3D printed thorax phantom with realistic bone-equivalent radiodensity using only one single commercially available filament. The generated thorax phantom geometry closely resembles a patient and includes direct manufacturing of bone structures while creating life-like heterogeneity within bone tissues. A HU analysis as well as a physical dimensional comparison were performed in order to evaluate the density and geometry agreement between the proposed phantom and the corresponding CT data. With the achieved density range (-482 to 968 HU) we could successfully mimic the realistic radiodensity of the bone marrow as well as the cortical bone for the ribs, vertebral body and dorsal vertebral column in the thorax skeleton. In addition, considering the large radiodensity range achieved a full thorax imaging phantom mimicking also soft tissues can become feasible. The physical dimensional comparison using both Extrema Analysis and Collision Detection methods confirmed a mean surface overlap of 90% and a mean volumetric overlap of 84,56% between the patient and phantom model. Furthermore, the reproducibility analyses revealed a good geometry and radiodensity duplicability in 24 printed cylinder replicas. Thus, according to our results, the proposed additively manufactured anthropomorphic thorax phantom has the potential to be efficiently used for validation of imaging- and radiation-based procedures in precision medicine.

The choice of materials challenges the development of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) phantoms and, to date, is mainly limited to water-filled compartments or gel-based components. Recently, solid materials have been introduced through additive manufacturing (AM) to mimic complex geometrical structures. Nonetheless, no such manufactured solid materials are available with controllable MRI contrast to mimic organ substructures or lesion heterogeneities. Here, we present a novel AM design that allows MRI contrast manipulation by varying the partial volume contribution to a ROI/voxel of MRI-visible material within an imaging object. Two sets of 11 cubes and three replicates of a spherical tumour model were designed and printed using AM. Most samples presented varying MRI-contrast in standard MRI sequences, based mainly on spin density and partial volume signal variation. A smooth and continuous MRI-contrast gradient could be generated in a single-compartment tumour model. This concept supports the development of more complex MRI phantoms that mimic the appearance of heterogeneous tumour tissues.

Binding to HSP90-CDC37 is essential for the activity of many protein kinases, but its function is unclear. Here, the authors show that HSP90-CDC37 provides a structural platform for the phosphatase PP5 to dephosphorylate a bound kinase, ‘factory resetting’ it prior to release.

Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) E6/E7 mRNA tests determine the oncogenic activity of the virus and represent a good clinical biomarker for predicting the risk of cervical cancer. So, the present study was conducted to know the role of HPV E6/E7 mRNA as a predictive biomarker for cervical carcinoma. Methodology The present study was conducted on 55 clinical samples of cervical scrapings and biopsy from the clinically suspected cases (based on signs and symptoms) of cervical cancer having abnormal PAP smear. The samples were processed in three steps—(1) HPV DNA detection, (2) HPV E6/E7 mRNA detection, and (3) histopathological analysis. Results Out of a total of 55 patients, 16 (29.09%) were positive for both HPV E6/E7 mRNA and HPV DNA and six were positive for only HPV DNA. So, a total of 22 (40%) patients were positive for HPV DNA. Out of these 22 samples, 10 (45.5%) were of HPV-16, six (27.3%) were of HPV-18, four (18.2%) were of HPV-31, and two (9.1%) were of HPV-45. Out of total 16 patients positive for HPV E6/E7 mRNA, 10 (62.5%) were of genotype 16 and six (37.5%) were of genotype 18. The patients who were found positive for HPV 31 and 45 genotypes did not have E6/E7 mRNA expression. On colposcopic-guided biopsy, among these 16 samples, eight (50%) were diagnosed with invasive squamous cell carcinoma, six (37.5%) with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 (CIN3), and two (12.5%) with CIN2. Out of those six patients in whom only HPV DNA was positive, five had normal biopsy findings and one had CIN1. Conclusion The present study suggests that HPV E6/E7 mRNA detection could be more reliable than DNA testing for predicting the risk of progression of HPV-induced cervical lesions to cervical carcinoma and it can be used as a non-invasive tool for triage and patient follow-up.

The introduction of spacers in coating steroid protein complexes and/or enzyme conjugates or immunogens is known to exert an influence on the sensitivity of steroid enzyme immunoassays. We investigated the impact of different homobifunctional spacers, ranging in atomic length from 3 to 10, on the sensitivity and specificity of prednisolone (PSL) enzyme immunoassays. In this study, four homo-bifunctional spacers, namely, carbohydrazide (CH), adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH), ethylene diamine (EDA), and urea (U), were incorporated between PSL and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) for preparing the enzyme conjugate with an aim to improve the sensitivity of the assay without compromising assay specificity. The assays were developed using these enzymes conjugated with antibodies raised against the PSL-21-HS-BSA immunogen. The sensitivity of the PSL assays after insertion of a bridge in the enzyme conjugate was 1.22 ng/mL, 0.59 ng/mL, 0.48 ng/mL, and 0.018 ng/mL with ADH, CH, EDA, and urea as a spacer, respectively. Among the four combinations, the PSL-21-HS-BSA-antibody with PSL-21-HS-U-HRP-enzyme conjugate gave better sensitivity and less cross-reaction. The percent recovery of PSL from the exogenously spiked human serum pools was in the range of 88.32%-102.50%. The intra and inter-assay CV% was< 8.46%. The PSL concentration was estimated in the serum samples of patients on PSL treatment. The serum PSL values obtained by this method correlated well with the commercially available kit (r2 = 0.98). The present study suggests that the nature of the spacer is related to assay sensitivity and not the spacer length.

Introduction Cancer clinical trials represent the “gold standard” for advancing novel cancer therapies. Optimizing trial participation is critical to ensuring the generalizability of findings across patients, yet trial enrollment rates, particularly among minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, remain suboptimal. Methods We conducted in-depth interviews with oncologists at a large academic medical center to explore their (1) attitudes and perceived barriers to offering clinical trials to minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged patients, and (2) recommendations for improving the enrollment of minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged patients in cancer clinical trials. Results Of 23 medical oncologists approached, 17 enrolled (74% response rate; mean age = 47; female = 42%; White = 67%). Content analysis revealed several barriers to enrollment: (1) ethical dilemmas; (2) ambivalence about trial risks and benefits; and (3) concern about patient well-being. Concerns about the legitimacy of informed consent, perceived lack of equipoise, and fear of personal bias influenced clinicians’ decisions to recommend trials during treatment discussions. Concerns about creating an imbalance between trial risks and benefits among patients with high-level needs, including patients with literacy, psychiatric, and other socioeconomic vulnerabilities, impacted clinicians’ enthusiasm to engage in trial discussions. Clinicians identified patient, provider, and system-level solutions to address challenges, including increasing patient and clinician support as well as involving external personnel to support trial enrollment. Conclusion Findings reveal multi-level barriers to offering cancer clinical trials to underrepresented patients. Targeted solutions, including system level changes to support clinicians, patient financial support, and implementation of clinical trial navigation programs were recommended to help reduce access barriers and increase enrollment of underrepresented patients into cancer clinical trials.

The application of liquid bacterial inoculants along with the recommended dose of chemical fertilization improved the quality of forage oats at Bathinda and Ludhiana. The best quality attributes were observed with the treatment T11 (RDF + B. seminalis + S. maltophilia) with significant improvement in the crude protein (9.23 and 8.92%), ADF content (33.10 and 33.50%) and IVDMD (71.66 and 70.20%) at Bathinda and Ludhiana respectively. Further, correlation studies showed positive and significant correlation between ADF and NDF and the negative correlation with the rest of the quality attributes. Therefore, it is believed that liquid bacterial inoculants can play a significant role in ameliorating the forage oats quality, thus can help to enhance the overall animal productivity. In addition, potential of these liquid bacterial inoculants can be explored in integrated nutrient management or organic cultivation of forage oats as well as in other crops.

Type-I solar noise storms are perhaps the most commonly observed active radio emissions from the Sun at meter-wavelengths. Noise storms have a long-lived and wideband continuum background with superposed islands of much brighter narrowband and short-lived emissions, known as type-I bursts. There is a serious paucity of studies focusing on the morphology of these two types of emissions, primarily because of the belief that coronal scattering will always wash out any features at small angular scales. However, it is important to investigate their spatial structures in detail to make a spatio-temporal connection with observations at extreme-ultraviolet/X-ray bands to understand the detailed nature of these emissions. In this work, we use high angular resolution observations from the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope to demonstrate that it is possible to detect structures with angular scales as small as ∼9″, about three times smaller than the smallest structure reported to date from noise storms. Our observations also suggest that while the individual type-I bursts are narrowband in nature, the bursts are probably caused by traveling disturbance(s) inducing magnetic reconnections at different coronal heights, and thus leading to correlated change in the morphology of the type-I bursts observed at a wide range of frequencies.

The geo-effectiveness of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is determined primarily by their magnetic fields. Modeling of gyrosynchrotron (GS) emission is a promising remote sensing technique to measure the CME magnetic field at coronal heights. However, faint GS emission from CME flux ropes is hard to detect in the presence of bright solar emission from the solar corona. With high dynamic-range spectropolarimetric meter wavelength solar images provided by the Murchison Widefield Array, we have detected faint GS emission from a CME out to ∼8.3 R _⊙ , the largest heliocentric distance reported to date. High-fidelity polarimetric calibration also allowed us to robustly detect circularly polarized emission from GS emission. For the first time in the literature, Stokes V detection has jointly been used with Stokes I spectra to constrain GS models. One expects that the inclusion of polarimetric measurement will provide tighter constraints on the GS model parameters. Instead, we found that homogeneous GS models, which have been used in all prior works, are unable to model both the total intensity and circular polarized emission simultaneously. This strongly suggests the need for using inhomogeneous GS models to robustly estimate the CME magnetic field and plasma parameters.

NKG2D is an activating receptor of natural killer cells that recognizes stress-induced ligands (NKG2DL) expressed by many tumor cells. Nevertheless, NKG2DL downregulation or shedding can still allow cancer cells to evade immune surveillance. Here, we used lentiviral gene transfer to engineer clinically usable NK-92 cells with a chimeric antigen receptor (NKAR) which contains the extracellular domain of NKG2D for target recognition, or an NKAR, together with the IL-15 superagonist RD-IL15, and combined these effector cells with recombinant NKG2D-interacting bispecific engagers that simultaneously recognize the tumor-associated antigens epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) or ErbB2 (HER2). Applied individually, in in vitro cell-killing assays, these NKAB-EGFR and NKAB-ErbB2 antibodies specifically redirected NKAR-NK-92 and NKAR_RD-IL15-NK-92 cells to glioblastoma and other cancer cells with elevated EGFR or ErbB2 levels. However, in mixed glioblastoma cell cultures, used as a model for heterogeneous target antigen expression, NKAR-NK cells only lysed the EGFR- or ErbB2-expressing subpopulations in the presence of one of the NKAB molecules. This was circumvented by applying NKAB-EGFR and NKAB-ErbB2 together, resulting in effective antitumor activity similar to that against glioblastoma cells expressing both target antigens. Our results demonstrate that combining NK cells carrying an activating NKAR receptor with bispecific NKAB antibodies allows for flexible targeting, which can enhance tumor-antigen-specific cytotoxicity and prevent immune escape.

Solar radio emissions provide several unique diagnostics to estimate different physical parameters of the solar corona, which are otherwise simply inaccessible. However, imaging the highly dynamic solar coronal emissions spanning a large range of angular scales at radio wavelengths is extremely challenging. At gigahertz frequencies, MeerKAT radio telescope is possibly globally the best-suited instrument at present for providing high-fidelity spectroscopic snapshot solar images. Here, we present the first published spectroscopic images of the Sun made using the observations with MeerKAT in the 880–1670 MHz band. This work demonstrates the high fidelity of spectroscopic snapshot MeerKAT solar images through a comparison with simulated radio images at MeerKAT frequencies. The observed images show extremely good morphological similarities with the simulated images. Our analysis shows that below ∼900 MHz MeerKAT images can recover essentially the entire flux density from the large angular-scale solar disk. Not surprisingly, at higher frequencies, the missing flux density can be as large as ∼50%. However, it can potentially be estimated and corrected for. We believe once solar observation with MeerKAT is commissioned, it will enable a host of novel studies, open the door to a large unexplored phase space with significant discovery potential, and also pave the way for solar science with the upcoming Square Kilometre Array-Mid telescope, of which MeerKAT is a precursor.
